honestly jonathan byers is one of the most interesting and subtle characters in the show. he has a very raw character, he’s very loving to his family, he can kick ass and fight monsters when his family is in danger or even punch a cop when his loved ones are insulted, but the way he turns to violence is very different to the steve-macho way or hopper-violence-as-a-means-to-an-end way. he’s very sensitive, he feels deeply and he's super closed off and doesn’t trust people like at all, that's why he alienates himself from society. but at the same time he is fascinated with people to the point he centers his art around watching people in their most authentic moments. he’s interested in something deeper in the human nature, and he’s fucking making an anti-capitalist horror movie in his first year of university. all of this makes him an incredibly attentive observer, and it's his biggest strength and weakness.
he cannot communicate his needs at all, so he keeps living for others, but it’s not because he wants to meet their expectations or construct a facade (looking at mike here), but because he was parentified so early, he never had a chance to learn what he wants because he needed to care for his mom and younger brother from an early age. so he finds his purpose in sacrificing himself for others. jonathan is passive and selfless and that's his biggest problem.
and of course it makes sense that he turns to drugs to avoid thinking about his crumbling relationship and his NYU dream dead, because he learned this coping mechanism, when he was a kid and his parents argued a lot, so when it got ugly he would put on loud music to dissociate from what was happening at home. again, jonathan's defense mechanisms are rooted in passiveness, avoidance, and dissociation.
jonathan's character is so beautifully constructed, the groundwork is all there, and honestly i love that he broke up with nancy and went to NYU to make his niche arthouse horror film in the fake-ass finale, but I would really love to see more to his arc. because it's still not clear what exactly jonathan desires, who he will become when he stops being an observer and takes action, especially if that action is purely selfish for the first time in his life
(and for my fellow bylers here, if we take into consideration that jonathan is a mirror character to will, his selfishness arc should expand will's selfishness arc, because these two are too selfless for their own good, and they need to fucking up their game really fast, figure out what they want, and take it)
ugh, I just remembered that sweet, sweet period of time in between vol1 and vol2 of season 5 ... the field scene was EVERYWHERE as was the Sorcerer scene (for good reason!), people were analyzing Robin's speech, the Never be the same edit was everywhere, we were speculating about what would happen in vol2 (and coming up with far better storylines than whatever slop we got served), and in general we were just so fucking hopeful ...
like, this was THE time to be a Byler and Byler out with the fandom (granted, I've only been a somewhat active Byler fan since early fall of last year, but I've been lurking since the dark days of 2019, and that 4 week period was it if you ask me)
... life was good and we really could've had it all

also, I felt like sharing another little snippet from chapter seven with you, so here we go :)
You’re so caught up in all the horrible, gruesome scenarios your anxious mind keeps coming up with that you almost miss the faint cough coming from Haymitch. But then his grey eyes find yours, and for just this moment, your mind stops spinning.
„S-sorry Princess“, Haymitch says, coughing weakly, „probably not my best look.“
„You idiot!“
Your hand moves of its own accord, faintly punching Haymitch in the shoulder, before your mind has caught up with the movement. Haymitch winces, and your lips are already forming an apology, but then he grins crookedly, causing you to glare at him.
„Haymitch, you can’t - you can’t just do something like that, I-“
You can feel your throat closing up. Your eyes are filling with tears, threatening to spill.
„You’re such an idiot, Haymitch“, you whisper, your voice strained, as you throw your arms around Haymitch, hugging him to you.
“There might be another option, though”, he says hesitantly. “I don’t know whether it’ll work, and you’re sure as hell not going to like it, Princess.”
You sigh, trying to brace yourself for the worst. “Just tell me.”
He laughs dryly, avoiding your gaze. “Well, we could get - you could marry me.”

sorry that I've been MIA lately, but uni (and finishing my degree) has been extremely stressful during the last few weeks. Fortunately though, I finally have more writing time again and I've finally started writing chapter seven. I don't want to make any promises as to when I'll be able to finish it, but right now I'm aiming for a (late) June update & maybe I'll follow that up with chapter eight on Haymitch's birthday, but we'll have to see about that ...
