A brownie eh? That didnât surprise Thraece in the least. Especially given that her scrying crystal and her anchor stones had surged with energy when sheâd moved in, but sheâd assumed it had been due to any adventurers who had.. perhaps not made it back from their last adventure.
Happy to have been wrong on that account, Thraece smiled happily at the childlike house spirit.
âMy apologies if my sachets insulted you Kudava. I was unaware that the guild hosted a guardian, and I would never hope to offend you with such paltry means to keep out a spirit. These sachets are a habit borne of spending the last six months traveling through a forest filled with malevolent spirits, and it was merely second nature to place them as I unpacked. I will of course remove them, and place instead more of these selenite.â
Thraece moved around the room as she spoke, showing deference to the house spirit by removing her sachets, and replacing them with the stones like the one sheâd handed to Kudava.
âYes, it is very similar to moonstone, in fact its name comes from the moon goddess Selene, however this stone is better for connecting to spirits, whereas moonstone would be better for using the moonâs powers to open channels to oneâs self.
And yes, it is different from the ones that other magic users here use because it is uncut. They have gems that have been cut from their original form and prepared for magic use specifically. That takes time and energy. Those stones also hold more power, for a shorter period of time. A decade versus a century, for example. My stones are merely polished however. They donât pulse as powerfully but they also donât require extensive energy to charge, nor will they deplete as easily, and most of all, they will take natural energy from their surroundings, rather than merely being conduits as a cut gem that another magic user might have.
It is because my magic is very specific, and tied to the use of minerals. So I cannot do magic without the stones, but I also will not feel the fatigue and whiplash of using them they way other magic users will.â
Thraece had made herself comfortable on her bed, and had offered the brownie the chair at her desk to be polite. She had also pulled out the fresh loaf of bread sheâd bought from the bakery this morning to share with the brownie, recalling the stories her sisters had told her growing up to always respect a house spirit, and the foods that would be left behind if she were to ever encounter one.
Cutting it and spreading some preserves on it, she settled back to relax.
Smiling as she finished her slice, she asked, âHave you always been here Kudava? Or did you come here when the guild was created? Iâve never met a brownie before, the guild must be blessed to have you to guard it.â
âI didnât feel insulted.â The house guardian responded, lips forming a childish pout. She really shouldnât be, after all this world had given birth to countless malicious demons and spirits, and itâs not as if sheâd be able to keep them all away. Nevertheless Kudava seemed to relax once the sachets had been removed, a strangely human gesture for a spirit.
âYou sound like a walking library.â She mused after listening to Thraeceâs explanations. But she didnât mind listening, she always loved to listen to peopleâs stories, whether they be personal memoirs or just scientific facts.
âUh, no... Iâve been here before the guild came here.â Seemed like it was her turn to tell stories now, though. Kudava moved over to the chair, gratefully accepting the fresh bread. Itâs not as if she required any human food, but she loved the taste and smell. âTechnically every house got its own spirit guarding it. Well, Iâve never really left this place, so Iâve never really met another brownie either. I can hear them, though.â She started to explain while munching on the bread.
âThey donât really like showing themselves most of the time. And weâre good at hiding, if we really want to. I bet you wouldnât be able to find me if we played hideânâseek!â A short pause followed as she took another bite of the bread. âI didnât show myself to my old my family either. But after the guild moved here, things kinda got too interesting, it was just impossible to hide in the stove all day long. I kinda got curious and wanted to meet all the strange people here...â
