Hey tumblr!!!! Been workin hard on these DIY orbital kits in anticipation of bb’s first craft fair here in a couple weeks, lotsa iterating thru tweaks in the tracing templates n plastic disks plus doin all the package n graphic design. Decided to give em lil clear plastic 3D printed hangers instead of jump rings, too! Anyway, still working on the tutorial video/product photography/website/etc cuz I wanted to get the design all settled first in order to run my die-cutting machines in the background n be buildin inventory while I sit n work on my computer. BUT OH NO I HAVE ALL THESE ASSEMBLED DESIGN TEST RUNS THAT'RE SITTIN AROUND MY APT CREATIN A FIRE HAZARD. HAHA WHOOPS GUESS I'LL JUST HAVE TO GIVE THEM AWAY FOR FREE TO STRANGERS ON THE INTERNET. (But in all seriousness, kit giveaway deets pending!!!!! :V And I'll be selling them n premade hydrogen orbitals in the colors of your choosing on muh Etsy here v v soon.) PS: The results are have been in, and non-math people struggle to remember/pronounce/spell the name ‘Eigenstuff’... bad. So while it pains me to kill that darling, I’m v stoked to now be operating under the brand name Hypotenuse Studios! <3 (Also omg I bought hypoten.us for $0.88 which brings me a million joys but I don’t have it all set up as a redirect yet so here's the under construction tutorial page it’ll eventually link to.)

Hi I’m alive I’ve been busy making what are (to my knowledge) the most detailed/information dense sculptural models of hydrogen atomic orbitals/electron clouds out there and the first ones to acknowledge both sides of the wave-particle duality, yeehaw (the pink n orange are the color-coded “crests” and “troughs” of 3D waves centered about the nuclei in black, the internal shading shows the probability of finding the electron in that region relative to the nucleus). They were made using a sculptural technique of my own invention which involves cutting Mylar film disks and a million cardstock airbrush masks with a Silhouette Curio die-cutting machine and then painting them with Copic markers using the Copic airbrush attachment. As the disks were completed, they were mounted on a rod with spacers to separate them, and the atoms are suspended from a hanger made of Plexiglass. Ok now that I’m done one-upping my Bridges submission from last year so my self-esteem is intact, finally gonna get to werk on the DIY color-em-yourself kits of the Christmas ornament lookin’ orbitals (and ngl tumblr I’m way better about updating my instagram just fyi)

(Also also my cute bb air compressor has a tiny tank so its always runnin its compressor I JUST DROPPED MY PHONE IN THE MUD WHILE ON MY WALK AND POSTED THIS MID SENTENCE DANG IT anyway it sounds like a cat purring so im deffo giving it craft foam cat ears and a pink rhinestone heart nose and it’s gonna be adorable and im v excited)

This cone in a cone in a cone was my Copic airbrush's maiden voyage and it came out PERFECT other than me needing to practice at being consistent w/ each layer once my air hose comes tomorrow (I killed the half used air can that came with it CUZ eBay to make this.) I just used Sharpie for the new orbiral I made last night cuz I wasn't waiting two days to see how the new version came out, hopin to squeeze out one lot Sharpie one this evening and then I've been working on the first one imma airbrush tomorrow as well. I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT THESE RECENT ART DEVELOPMENTS I THINK IM GONNA DIE EVERYTHING IS COMING OUT EVEN BETTER THAN I IMAGINED

CONE IN A CONE IN A CONE IN A CYLINDER. Jus gettin a feel for this new approach to makin 3D stuff with Mylar and alcohol ink. My next iteration is prolly gonna be a cone in a cone in a cone but with my new Copic markers I got yesterday. :V

Lil experiment from last night with makin spheres outta cut Mylar, square rods, n spacers. 45 layers thick, a lot of em crooked but w/e point is this the direction I'm tryinnq take my orbitals next Also I think this photo looks like a movie poster for... something. Maybe a movie about people that eat plastic cuz that thing looks like a weird lollipop.

Cuz hydrogen gas is just a bunch of hydrogen atoms randomly floating around, right? (Bonus pic of super lazy temporary hanger made from a paper basket I could reach from my sofa I then zip-tied to a clothes hanger ngl I'm p proud/glad I didn't have to drill anything)

Mood.

Gettin swatchy with the copics on the mylars at Michael's. So, wanting to do more orbital things but with the same square rod and spacers construction as my complex function paper sculptures so then I'll have more to work with than just z axis symmetry. But my early airbrush experiments are pointing to the almost invisibly light colors working best because after multiple layers they're no longer invisible while the nice n dark colors start to get too opaque and don't feel as ~luminous~. Unexpected but unsurprising, ha. I'm into it tho, I think it'll be really pretty. :> Anyway, I'm thinking bold jewel tones so deez atoms got dat *pop* to em, jahhhh???? :0

Got my half-off-on-ebay Copic airbrush in the other day! Tested it out with some rando markers left over from past projects, confirmed that yes I do want the sketch markers since the brush nibs are supposed to be more splattery than this and I want more defined ink droplets. Other than that, v v pleased with my initial test, time to get off my butt and find out what I did with the lil airbrush air compressor I grabbed out of the picked through pile of my friend Dave's leftover stuff after he passed away a year ago. Free art supplies! I knew I'd inevitably be able to use it! Thx spirit of Dave from saving me from having 2 use canned air miss u boo hope you're freakin out Jesus real good. ❤ Anyway it's pay day so I'm gonna waddle over to Michael's with Mylar sheets in hand after I go to the bank I can start doing the research for pickin out my airbrush marker palette. Cool. In the mean time, been working on doing a whole lil set of orbitals in purple n blue which I think might be my favorite Sharpie color scheme. Cool. In totally unrelated news, a hole in the ground jumped out in front of me after I'd had too many Natty Daddys+not enough food at a house show on Saturday and my right hand ate shit on concrete hard enough for me to get a couple of stitches in my knuckle the next day. (Which is actually more a reflection of the location than the severity of that wound tbh). Got me feeling extra pUnK rAwK this week 9/10 overall good time honestly ain't even that mad I HAVE SUFFERED FAR WORSE FOR ART. Cool. Also, there's Niels.

That's 6 layers deep and still so see-through. 5 mil mylar now, 5 mil mylar tomorrow, 5 mil mylar forever.
