"Hahâ" I whimpered. It was so unlike me, I was loud, sure, but usually loud in a groaning sense, not on my back, whining and writhing pathetically. I looked down at you, throat bobbing as I tried not to moan like I was in some fucking porno, but it was hard. Your hands were on my dick, one pumping up and down, squeezing, the other focused on the tip, thumb sliding over my slit.
"Baby, please, I'm.." I groan, back arching from the bed. I felt myself lose the battle for control, my vision going a thousand times clearer as my pupils took over my eyes completely. You continued to pump me as I shuddered, listening to the neighbors downstairs as they left for a partyâa bird outsideâthe fucking laundry machines seven floors down.
"Oh." You paused, seeing my eyes. You didn't look fearful, if you had, I think I'd down in shame. You looked; observant. I couldn't tell if it made me feel like a jarred specimen or if it made me feel desired. Maybe both. Which was confusing in itself.
"Sorry," I sigh, squeezing my eyes shut and trying to gain back control. When I opened my eyes again, my vision was normal.
"Don't be sorry," you hummed, one hand sliding to my hip and rubbing it comfortingly. "We can stop if you need."
You were so sweet. I was the one who had suggested this and here I was being a loser. "No, no, I want..I want to keep going." I grit, sitting up slightly. "I need you."
Your perfect eyes met mine, hesitation flickered in them before you moved to straddle my hips. Your bare thighs met mine, cotton panties rubbing against my cock and making my jaw clench from the stimulation.
"You're sure?" You ask again.
"I'm sure." I murmur, unhooking your bra and tossing it to the side, cupping your soft breasts. You raise your hips, sliding the rest of your layers off a little clumsily. You settle back down and I shiver, feeling your cunt sit right on my dick without penetrating.
I let out a slow breath, steadying my heart rate. Your arms wrap around my neck and I lean my head forward, pecking you neck before my head falls onto your shoulder.
"If you're this bad without even being in me, are you gonna explode when you are?" You ask genuinely, breaking the tension I'd made for myself.
I huff out a chuckle, leaning back against the headboard. "Let's find out." I rasp, helping you raise your hips.
I angle my cock upward and the second you start sinking down, my vision blurs. I can hear the sirens outside, a dog barking, a couple people yelling at a car for not stoppingâ
"-er? Peter!" I gasp softly, coming to and meeting your eyes.
"Huh?" I blurt, breathless.
"Maybe this isn't such a good idâ"
"Please," I grip your hips as gently as I can, though it feels harder than usual.
Your brow furrows, lips twitching downward before you sigh. "You have to tell me if it gets too overwhelming."
"More than usual? This aspect of our relationship has always overwhelmed me, even before." I joke.
"I'm serious, Peter," you frowned.
"If it gets too bad, I'll tell you." I promise.
You nod and then I'm helping you angle your hips again, my cock sliding in slowly. My eyes roll back, jaw falling open in a silent moan. I could feel your heart pounding from inside your cunt, could feel the spasms you were getting, how wet you were. "Fuck." I breathe, pulling you forward. You let me, sitting in my lap now as I moved your hips slowly myself.
I gripped you gently, raising you up and down in slow movements before I felt myself slip again. I cried out softly, my face tucking into your neck as my head pounded, the pain excruciating.
"Peterâ"
"I want it." I rasp, looking up at you. "Please."
"You're out of it entirely!" You explain, apologizing softly when I wince. "You're doing too much."
"Then...ride me." I say after a moment of deliberation.
"I...Peter, are you sure that that's reallyâ"
"Please." I rasp.
You sigh heavily, pressing your forehead to mine, pecking my lips once before pulling away. I don't let you get far, gently pulling you back in, slotting our lips together in a sloppy excuse of a kiss. My tongue is in your mouth immediately, tangling with yours, my hands fisting your hair as painlessly as possible. The second you moan into the kiss, I'm tapped out.
I feel floaty, like I'm watching what's happening at a vantage point rather than experiencing it. I can't hear anything, silence ringing loudly in my head, the only sense remaining being sight. I see you notice, respecting my previous pleas and starting to move your hips on your own. I'm brought back with the sensation, my senses flooding back all at once, making me groan loudly.
"Are you okay?" You ask, pausing your hip movements.
"Yes." I pant, shaking my head. "Don't stop, don't fucking stop, baby."
You listen, rolling your hips in quick, practiced movements, while I lay down and take it. Usually, I was a giver; fucking you six ways to Sunday and then some, but being out of commission like this was doing something for me as well.
I could smell your pheromones changing as your orgasm approached, meeting your eyes, my fingers brushing over your hair as best I could with how hard they were trembling.
"Can Iâ"
"Come in me," you finished for me. I sobbed once, my load shooting up into your womb. I could hear it slosh inside of you, which would be disgusting if I wasn't a fucking freak and getting turned on more by it. Your orgasm hit right after, nails digging into my back before you splayed your hands flat, hating when you left marks that hurt me in the process.
"Fuck," I pant, kissing your mouth softly.
You moan into the kiss, head tilting back when I trail down your neck. I pull away after leaving a few pink marks, our wrecked eyes meeting one another's.
"Was that okay?" You finally ask.
"It was great." I nod. "Overwhelming, in a good way."
"We're not doing that again for a while." You say, expression stern now.
"I think that's for the best." I sigh, pulling you to my chest and lying down, cock still nestled deep inside of you.
"Can you hear the sperm?" You ask after a few minutes.
"What?" I choke.
"I mean, you could hear my blood rushing last week, it's not totally out there."
"Iâ" I focused, not really able to decipher what was your blood rushing, your heart pounding, my heart pounding, and my seed moving inside of you. "I don't think so."
"Do you think you'd hear it if it fertilized an egg?"
"Fucking hell, baby, I dunno." I huff. "If you do get pregnant, I'll love you and it."
"Our baby's an 'it' to you?" You arched an eyebrow, looking up at me.

enhanced! peter parker that just canât seem to keep his hands off you! heâs been acting so weird, so on edge, though you canât quite place why, and you arenât complaining much, seeing as youâve gotten more attention in the past few days than you ever have in your life. heâs a mess, the second you come through the door. heâs waiting for you, your heartbeat echoing in his aching head, the smell of your perfume clouding his senses. by the time you reach him, fingers in his hair, hugging him after a long day, heâs gone, wasted on you. his pulse hammers at the base of his throat, his skin buzzing from your touch, already half hard just from the feeling of you so close after an agonizing few hours. he gets you straight to the bedroom, leaving a trail of your clothes down the hall, practically whining any time you even slightly pull away. finally, youâre beneath him, right where he wants you, and he is an absolute wreck. his lips burn with the intensity in which he kisses you, all teeth and tongues, his mind playing the sounds of your chaste breath on a painfully intense loop. when you brush his length, he nearly finishes on the spot, your name falling from his lips in a broken plea. âmissed you so much, sweet girl, please just- oh, god, take it easy, yeah? wanna-â he canât even finish. your hand wraps around his pulsing cock, and heâs shooting thick ropes onto your smooth skin, chest heaving, cheeks flushed and dewy with sweat. âoh, baby, iâm sorry,â he murmurs after a moment, shaking his head at his own selfishness, âcome here, okay? wanna taste you.â he buries his head between your thighs, and by the time you come undone on his tongue, heâs painfully hard again, nudging against the mattress to relieve the throbbing. âcome here,â you hum, watching him through half lidded eyes, âslow down, pete. just come be with me.â he nods, hesitating before lying beside you, letting you roll on top of him, sliding down onto him with a familiar ease. his hands fly to your hips, bucking into you on instinct, but you shake your head, leaning into his neck, inhaling his warm scent. âjust lay with me,â you whisper, and he twitches inside you, âyou can let it go, mkay? just relax, honey. love you sâmuch.â and then heâs cumming again, shooting into you with a shaky exhale, from almost no contact at all. he can feel the way you clench around him, the way you drink it all in, and hear the way your breath hitches. you keep your promise though, lying there with him in the afterglow, soothing him in the way only you can until his raging arachnid senses slow down to a steady drip.

CHICKEN SHOP DATE with y/n l/n has uploaded a new video: SPIDER-MAN | CHICKEN SHOP DATE #214
(2 hours agoâŚ)
it took about two years to finally get the man on your show⌠but finally, someone from spider-manâs personal life finally listened to you and got him on your youtube series.
peter? loved your show. he loves the guests and the style of the show and your laid back personality compared to the other shows on youtube. he always found late night shows too⌠forced, other people had weird questions, but yours? yours was perfect
the only issue? they asked for⌠him. so now, here he was, dressed in his spider-man suit, mask halfway pushed up to reveal his mouth and a part of his jawline, and a camera on him⌠steaming hot chicken and fries sitting in front of him.
and here you were; internally freaking out that you were really interviewing him, the fucking king of new york himself. spider-man. fucking spider-man. the wall crawler!
the restaurant atmosphere wasnât tense or quiet but rather warm and nervous. maybe itâs cause youâre interviewing world famous superhero, possibly. but even spider-man across the table was nervous as he tasted the food.
but then, spider-man speaks the first words of the video. âyou know⌠this is really good chicken.â
âthanks, we try to make the chicken at least some what edible⌠like me.â you reply to him, taking a bite of your own food; itâs pretty good, you will agree with him like that.
immediately, peter could feel his heart do a little flip thing that heâs felt before⌠but never to this extent. he doesnât let it show though, he knows he canât be too confident on this showâ just be friendly, flirt back, and donât overshare too much. âwell itâs good cause iâm hungry. i didnât eat before coming.â
you lean back in your chair, pointing to him. âso how do you work out? considering youâre a⌠human spider after all.â
he chuckles lightly, covering his mouth with the top of his hand before speaking, pointing to his own body. âthe spider-like qualities donât really⌠stick in terms of⌠appetite and stuff like that.â
âoh? it doesnât.â
âno, luckily iâve gotten good at maintaining sweat and all that jazz.â
[video cuts to an outside shot of the shop; nighttime with the moon bright and the lights of the chicken shop lit brightly; Y/NâS CHICKEN. ON 45TH STREET]
peter takes another bite of the chicken as he swirls the straw around in his chosen drink. âyou know⌠weâve probably met before.â
âoh yeah?â you challenge. âyou think as spider-man weâve met or as your secret alias thing?â
he shrugs as he scratches his left cheek with his fingers. âi mean, probably as both⌠sorry if i didnât remember you if i did save you once; i save a lot of people.â
you put your chin on your hand as you completely ignore his defense. âyou have been avoiding meâ
âhave i?â he asks, tilting his head.
you nodded. âyeah, been trying to get you on this show for two years up to this point⌠seems like my calls to your manager didnât reach you.â
he nods his head even if he doesnât agree with your sentiment. âi donât have a manager darling, itâs just me⌠who the hell would you have called in the first place?â
âi tried the daily bugle but they hung up on me, i think i was talking to jameson himself."
âyeah⌠he doesnât really⌠fancy me all too much.âÂ
putting a chicken strip into your mouth, you chew on it before putting your knuckles to your mouth, swallowing it as you respond. âoh thatâs so unfortunate.â
peter points his french-fry holding fingers at you in agreement. âthatâs what i tell them because i donât do anything wrong and yet they have an issue!â
âi mean, what did you do to them?â you question, a teasing tone to your words.
peter shrugs. âi donât know.â
âdid you like, fuck jamesonâs wife? flirt with his daughter in front of him?â you ask, adding possible solutions to j.jonah jamesonâs undying hatred for the wallcrawler.
ânot that i know of.â he answers, sipping from his straw. âspider-man doesnât usually do the hit it and quit it stuff so i know i didnât do anything to him personally.â
you crack a smile at his words. âso spider-man doesnât fuck a civillian he saves if they ask hard enough?â
he shakes his head. ânope⌠not trying to have a son or daughter running âround and it uh⌠reveals my secret identity because of dna and everything⌠plus, not trying to give my powers away.â
âselfish.âÂ
âreasonable.âÂ
[video cuts to a womanâs arm, your arm, putting the fries from the deep-fry basket onto the tray, ready to serve to the next customer]
you eat a couple of fries before steering the conversation somewhere else. âso we all know new york is the weirdest of weird places⌠whatâs the weirdest thing youâve interrupted while swinging?â
spider-man chuckles behind his glass. âuhhhh⌠basically, i accidentally landed⌠right in between a proposing couple on one of those garden rooftops.âÂ
âwas there like a serial killer on the roof? what happened?â you ask.
âuh⌠the ring rolled off the roof and the guy nearly fell trying to catch it.â he explains, rubbing the back of his head as he chews on a fry, taking the time to scratch the back of his neck as well. âthey still got engaged.âÂ
âdid you go to the wedding?â
âno, wasnât on the guest list.â
you click your tongue. âyou know; i would invite you to my wedding.â
he smiles bold. âoh really? you think i could look good in a suit?â
âyouâd be invited as the groom and not a guest.â your tone deadpan despite the smile on your lips.
peter nods in understandingâ he tries to hide his blush at flirty words. âohhhhh.â
[video cuts to a close up on the chickenâs shop menu⌠damn, in this economy, itâs surprising to see a 4 chicken tender and fry combo for seven dollars. the sound of the kitchen can be heard in the background.]
peter fixes his mask to make sure it doesnât reveal too much before he speaks again. âi noticed that the colors of the showâs logo match my suit.â
you look up, smiling as you eat another piece of chicken. âoh yeah?â you cover your mouth to swallow before finishing your sentence. âyou like it?â
âitâs an honor, sweetheart.â
[video cuts to the grill inside the kitchen, two pieces of texas toast sitting butter side down]
âis it true that all superheroes are fuckboys and fuckgirls?â you ask.
peter looks up at you, eyes of the mask widening before shortly going back to regular position, waving his hand is dismay. ânah, most of us are professional. i know the human torch and hawkeye and that knobhead from bludhaven, whatâs his name?â
ânightwing?â you finish his question, remembering that black hair bird gymnast sitting across from you.
he snaps his finger. âyeah, that kid⌠bro, he gives us a bad rep âcause heâs always flirting with his fans⌠itâs like totally crazy the type of stuff he pulls with âem.â
âso you, spider-man, donât flirt with your own fans?â you question him, raising a brow as you lean forward on the table.
the webslinger shakes his head. ânope. not trying to have my name trending for flirting.â
âwell iâm a fan and youâre flirting with me right nowâŚâ
âif you wanna spin it like that.â
[video cuts to the soda station in the shop; all sodas are available except mountain dew. a sticky-note is placed at the bottom of the dispensary, reading very simply; out of order.]
âiâve asked people out a lot.â you begin, swinging around the half-eaten chicken strip in your fingers. âand have gotten noâs back.â
peter interrupts with a smile, pointing to the ceiling of the restaurant. âin this way or like⌠in a real way?â
âno⌠noâŚâ you begin, tilting his head at the accusation that this restaurant is not a real way. how dare he. âwell, this is real, butâŚâ Â
then, spider-man busts out into a fit of laughterâ serious, unbridled laughter. you just made spider-man laugh and thereâs something good about that. thereâs something sweet about having that power over someone so much more powerful.
âstop laughing damn it!â you say, reaching over and smacking the back of his shoulder, which only makes him laugh. âthis is a serious issue!â
âoh i know it is, y/n, thatâs why iâm laughing!â he tries to explain in between laughs, finally leaning back in his chair.Â
you look at him dumbfounded, but a smile doesnât stop from appearing on your lips. âyou think youâre so fucking funny.â
âi think youâre funny, darling.â
[video cuts to a still shot of the outside deal; free desert with a purchase over $10, and in this restaurant? thatâs pretty easy to get⌠so obviously, free cakes and free brownies were flying all over that damn restaurant]
âare you seeing anyone?â you ask him, stealing one of his fries.
he shakes his head as he does the same to you; stealing a much bigger fry than you stole. ânot right now, itâs kinda hard to date with the whole⌠superhero stuff. why? you seeing if you have a chance?â
âmaybe, why does that matter?â you press him, leaning back and crossing your arms.
he mirrors your action; key sign of someone liking you, mirroring your actions. âjust asking. itâs hard to try to be on a date and suddenly an idiot is trying to rob a bank down fifth avenue.â he explains, motioning with his hand.Â
you nod along. âare you feeling any danger around us?â
he puts his fingers on his chin; surprisingly? his spidey-sense havenât gone off⌠maybe this is a sign. ânope, for once, my little inside radar ainât going off.â
and you almost read his mind perfect. âaye, itâs a sign we are made for each other.â
âcan you handle heights?â he asks.
you shrug. âpossibly, why you asking?â you question.Â
peter sticks his tongue to the inside of his cheek, visible to the screen as he scratches the back of his neck, a blush clear on his cheeks. âmaybe after this, i can show you what a little web slinging with spidey is like.âÂ
[video cuts to an empty version of the chicken shop; the red and white tables nice and pretty, the lights vibrant inside the restaurant, in the background has two workers behind the cash register.]
âso⌠as we wrap up our date⌠speak now or forever hold your truth, they say.â you offer him before sipping on your drink.
peter thinks for a minute before grinning bright. âeh, you have my number, this wonât be our last date.â

There is something seriously wrong with you. Seriously. You have half a mind to go to the student health center about it, but you know youâd get laughed out of there like you deserve.
Diagnosis? So horny itâs making you stupid.Â
That has to be it, because there can be no other reason for why you find yourself making out with Oscar Piastri in the middle of a frat basement, again.
PAIRING: oscar piastri x female reader
GENRE: (loosely derived) much ado about nothing au and therefore misunderstanding/miscommunication trope (sorry) (all will be well in the end trust me), non-f1 au, college au, greek life au if greek life was on its best behavior, nonlinear storytelling as a plot device (or plot crutch? hard 2 say), he falls first and harder and his major is Yearning (it's engineering) meanwhile she's... insane!, mutual pining and lovesick foolishness, romance, fluff, humor, lando as beloved frat boy caricature
WARNINGS: suggestive content/sexual themes, heavily implied smut, discussions of sexual assault (not directly related to main characters), underage drinking (?) and perhaps unhealthy party school culture in retrospect
WORD COUNT: ~19.7k (part 1) (SORRY i rly was gonna do this as one part but the word count got out of hand and i felt like i was gonna hit text block limit if i did it all in one post so....... part 2 out soon)
A/N: 1) re: the nonlinear storytelling, this fic starts out in present day and proceeds forward chronologically in each present day section. in between every present day section, we go back in time, starting in freshman year and proceeding forward chronologically from there, until we eventually catch up to where this fic first started in time. and then we just stay in the present! hope that makes sense eek; 2) the driversâ ages are Whatever I Want Them To Be here so dw abt it lol; 3) much love to this excellent modern retelling of much ado about nothing, from which i drew a lot of inspiration!; 4) happy reading & tell me ur thoughts MWAH<333
PRESENT DAY
Senior year dawns hot and muggy, but itâs going to treat you well, you think. You only have two more courses to complete in your major, your acapella group just added four new members, and you have the second biggest room in the sorority house with the cutest little balcony on the top floor. This also means you have the requisite amount of stuff to move up two flights of stairs, but luckily, the boys next door saw your plight and are helping you moveâ
âJesus Christ, how much shit can you possibly have?â
The serene smile that came easily to you a second ago freezes in place at the sound of that irritating fucking voice. You remind yourself that you have free will, you are the master of your own destiny and blood pressure, and you do not need to give the owner of that voice the satisfaction of reacting.
âSeriously, we should give up on the stairs and just have a yard sale here with the rest of your stuff.â
Oh, what the hell. Your attempt at zen was doomed from the start. âYou wouldnât dare,â you seethe, whirling around to glare at the Oscar Piastri-shaped nuisance currently carrying your beloved swivel armchair.
He pokes his head around the chair to smirk at you. âOh, hey there, Lady Disdain. And here I thought you were going to pretend I didnât exist for the rest of the year.âÂ
You smile sweetly right back. âThe year just startedâdonât count yourself out yet. And nobody forced you to help, so either stop complaining and lift with your legs, or fuck off.â
He tsks. âAnd leave the rest of my brethren at your mercy? I think not.â
âYour brethren are happy right where they are. Isnât that right, Logan?âÂ
Logan, passing by carrying your full-length mirror under one arm, catches the slightly maniacal tone of your voice and nods hurriedly. âNowhere Iâd rather be, maâam.â
You nod in smug satisfaction. For that, youâre even willing to overlook the fingerprints he is no doubt leaving on your mirror.Â
Oscar rolls his eyes. âThatâs your best friendâs boyfriendâsampling bias if Iâve ever seen it. And thanks for the backup, mate.â
Logan grins, unrepentant. âSorry, thatâs my girlâs best friend. Youâll understand when youâre older, honey.â
Oscar scowls at his retreating back and refuses to make eye contact with you. âWhatever. Iâd rather not lose my mind over anyone like that.â
You inhale deeply; here we go. âHah! As if anyone would want you toââ
âTrust me, thereâs no shortage of willing participants in my bedroomââ
âOh, yeah, âcause your bedroom is the pinnacle of every girlâs romantic fantasy? Real classy, assholeââ
âHey, I never said I was anyoneâs romantic fantasy, alright? Girls know what theyâre getting into with meââ
âTrouble is what theyâre getting intoââ
Lando clears his throat noisily. âCan you guys do this somewhere else? Youâre in our way.âÂ
Startled, you look away from Oscar for the first time to realize that the two of you are, indeed, blocking the doorway of the sorority house. Lando is lugging along two of your suitcases, and behind him, Alex and Charles release a hand each to wave cheerfully at you from where theyâre holding on to either end of your loveseat.Â
You shake yourself out of your Oscar-induced stupor and paste a serene smile back onto your face. âOf course, of course. Thank you, boys, you are such dears.â You usher them through the doorway with a promise of pizza for a job well done, and you steadfastly ignore Oscarâs faint, high-pitched imitation of your words of gratitude.Â
Youâll be damned if you let him get in the way of your perfect senior year.Â
THREE YEARS AGO: FRESHMAN YEAR, FIRST SEMESTER
There is something seriously wrong with you. Seriously. You have half a mind to go to the student health center about it, but you know youâd get laughed out of there like you deserve.
Diagnosis? So horny itâs making you stupid.Â
That has to be it, you decide. The raging hormones of youth, a campus full of equally hormonal, distractingly attractive students, and no fully developed prefrontal cortex to balance it all out. Youâre just another victim of the high of living on your own for the first time and being entirely free to make reckless decisions.
That has to be it, because there can be no other reason for why you find yourself making out with Oscar Piastri in the middle of a frat basement, again.
Itâs a real pity, too, because youâd been doing so well on the not-making-out-with-Oscar-Piastri front. Despite making clear eye contact with him at the last two dorm parties where youâd both been in attendance, you had managed to avoid his lipsâevil, terrible temptationsâeach time, mainly by turning the other cheek and feigning great interest in the conversation farthest from wherever he was brooding with his (admittedly fantastic) arms crossed over his chest and some storm of indecipherable emotions brewing in his eyes.Â
But tonight, the frats are open to freshmen, you are a sucker for a Two Friends Big Bootie mix, and, well, one thing led to another, so now you have Oscarâs tongue in your mouth and his hands on your ass. It is, unfortunately, just as great as it was the last time, and the time before that, and the time before that, and so on and so forth.
Itâs unfortunate, but not because thereâs anything wildly objectionable about Oscarâquite the opposite, really. Youâve done the customary freshman introduction song-and-dance with him and around him enough times now to have his biography memorized: heâs an engineering major, heâs from Melbourne, Australia, and heâs on the lightweight rowing team.Â
Then there are the things that youâve picked up on your own: heâs lightning-quick with a dry remark or a muttered quip, his hair is always perfectly soft even though youâre sure he uses 3-in-1, and heâs the best kisser youâve ever known.Â
Finally, hereâs what you donât know: just how far the moles on his skin extend below the collar of his shirt, why he looks at you with such intensity even when youâre both completely sober in broad daylight, or what he thinks of your hot-and-cold approach. That approach, so far, has looked like making out with him at parties, and literally turning on your heel and walking expeditiously in the opposite direction whenever you see him outside of a frat basement. Itâs so bad that youâve even resorted to pretending like youâve never met him once or twice.Â
Youâre sure itâs confusing as hell for him, but itâs confusing for you, too. If pressed, you wouldnât be able to state a clear reason for why youâre so mercurial with him. You just know that your mediocre high school boyfriend broke up with you two weeks before freshman orientation because he thought he was growing out of this relationship and the two of you should take advantage of the college experience and meet new people. And itâs not like he was the great love of your life, but how dare he break up with you? And who is he kidding, growing out of this relationship? He doesnât even know how to do his own laundry.Â
This is all to say: you came to campus six weeks ago determined to take advantage of the college experience and meet as many new people as possible. As youâd screamed drunkenly the first night, shortly before meeting (and making out with) Oscar for the first time: slut era, baby! So you have no intention of getting into a relationship, or even any kind of repeat player situation.Â
The problem, of course, is that you keep finding yourself within kissing distance of Oscar, which inevitably leads to kissing him, which inevitably leads to continuing to kiss him until youâre in danger of a public indecency citation or something (to your humiliation, youâve already gotten several Snapchat videos from your friends of your enthusiastic dance-floor-makeouts with the guy). Worse still, you havenât been kissing anyone but Oscar.Â
He doesnât seem to have any complaints about it, if his eager hands are any indication. Right now, those hands have migrated upwards, one rucking up the hem of your shirt and sweeping across the exposed skin of your waist, the other at your chin, tilting it so he can kiss you deeper. A shiver passes down your spine when he nips at your bottom lip, and you know he feels it because his mouth quirks into a smirk against yours, thrilling and terrible all at once.Â
âOh no,â you whine, voice wrecked and wretched when you pull away from the kiss just to tuck your head against his shoulder. âIâm kissing you.â
âYeah? Iâm well aware.â His voice is amused but no less affected, raspy and accent thicker around each elongated vowel.
âYeah, but.â You pull your head up to glare at him, no real heat behind it. Svedka and jungle juice make you more honest than you intend, because then you blurt out, âI had a plan for not kissing you!â
His eyebrows shoot up. âYou had a plan for not kissing me?â
You nod emphatically. âI was going to kiss Lando instead!â
His expression sobers immediately. Then, his eyes flick over your shoulder, and he laughs, sharp and a little mean. âHowâs that going for you, hm?â
You turn to spot Lando really crossing the line into public indecency, mouthing into some girlâs neck and hands disappearing under her skirt. Cheeks burning, you turn back around to face Oscar with a petulant huff. âWhatever. I didnât actually want to kiss him, anyways.â
Relief flashes across his face, so quickly that youâre not sure you didnât make it up after the fact. His voice is steady again when he asks, âWho dâya wanna kiss then, gorgeous?â
Uh-oh. The compliment completely destroys your resolve, and you resort to hiding your face in his shoulder again. âI want to kiss you, unfortunately.â
âUnfortunately?â he repeats, half pleased, half amused as he sways you back and forth to music which is entirely unsuited for this kind of slow dancing. âI donât get you, you know that?â
You sigh mournfully. âIn my defense, I actually do know that.â
âWell, alright then.â He doesnât press further, and you donât explain, either. Youâre going to get so much shit for this from your friends (Snapchat is not temporary), but you continue to sway with him until the party dies down, and later, it becomes one of the fonder memories you have of him.Â
PRESENT DAY
On second thought, maybe senior year has it out for you. Itâs 94Âş and the AC is out in your sorority house, your acapella group canât agree on a rehearsal time for the semester, and the last two courses you have to complete in your major are Physics I and II. Thereâs a reason youâve been putting these courses off until your last year of college; you and physics do not get along well. High school made you painfully aware of this, but who knew youâd be forced to confront this foe again as an adult, and at 8am in the morning, no less?Â
Of course, it gets worse, because the TA assigned to your physics lab section is Oscar. Nothing could have prepared you for the sight of his impassive countenance on the first day of classes, handing out paper copies of the physics syllabus because your professor is an old-fashioned kind of guy who still lectures on blackboard and doesnât allow laptops in the classroom.
âOh, fuck me,â you groan instantly upon reading the syllabus. Labs start next week, conducted under the supervision of the TAs; thatâs an extra 3 hours per week you have to spend with Oscar in close proximity, on top of actual class and office hours.
âFuck you for real,â Callie agrees from beside you. âIâm an English major. Why the hell am I here?â
You bat your eyelashes at her. âBecause lab is a graduation requirement and you love me so, so much?â
Your best friend frowns. âNo, I donât think thatâs quite right. There are easier courses with labs.â
Logan bounds up the steps to the third row where youâre sitting with Callie and greets her brightly. âHi, sweets!âÂ
She beams right back. âOh, yeah. Thatâs why Iâm here."
âWhore,â you mutter listlessly. She pats your shoulder in consolation, though youâre not sure how sincere she is about it given the hearts sparkling in both her and Loganâs eyes at the moment. You turn your attention instead to the back of the classroom, where you expect to find Oscar brooding with his arms crossed over his chest now that heâs done passing out syllabi.
To your surprise, heâs turned sideways, leaning casually against the wall as he laughs at something the pretty brunette next to him is saying. Sheâs another TA, Riley something-or-the-other; you remember her from serving on the Inter-Sorority Council together last year, but you donât remember her being that funny. Oscarâs laughing with his head tossed back, exposing several moles along his neck that remind you of when youâd seen all of the moles scattered across his skin. Not for the first time, you curse your excellent memory.
Youâre saved by the bell, so to speak; your professor enters the classroom just then, and soon youâre too busy scrambling to keep up with his rapid scrawling on the blackboard to think of much else.
50 minutes later, your notes look insane and you can feel the beginnings of a headache coming on. And youâre supposed to meet briefly with your lab section to introduce yourself to your partner and receive instructions for the first lab from the TA. Youâre already grimacing by the time you reach the small huddle of students grouped around Oscarânot just because heâs there, but also because you havenât had to take notes by hand in ages, and youâre still shaking out the cramp in your fingers.
âThat bad, huh?â The guy next to you nudges your shoulder with his and offers you a sympathetic smile.
You smile ruefully in return. âThat obvious, huh?
âI salute you, fellow warrior.â He really does salute you, solemn for 0.5 seconds before he breaks into a grin. âAnd lab partner, I think?â
You glance down at the sheet of lab partner assignments at the back of your syllabus. âOh, yeah, nice to meet you! Here, let me give you my number so we can coordinateââ
Oscar clears his throat loudly. âIf everyoneâs done socializing, we should talk about the pre-lab.â He doesnât look at you as he says it, but youâre sure the derision in his tone is directed at you. If youâd been feeling more energetic, you might have snarked back; as it is, you simply scowl at the floor, willing your headache away.
Oscar drones on about the pre-lab assignment for a few minutes, and then youâre exchanging numbers with your lab partner on the way out. Your headache has fully reared its head now, but thereâs not much you can do about it; you have a meeting to get to in twenty minutes, and itâs fifteen minutes across campus in the new science building. Youâre about to just grit your teeth through it when a tiny bottle of Advil and a banana are shoved in front of your face.Â
âIf youâre going to make it through 8am physics, you have to stop skipping breakfast,â Oscar says brusquely.Â
âIââ
âDonât like bananas, yeah, I know. Itâs all I had on me, okay?â
That isnât what you were about to say, but itâs trueâyou donât like bananas. Youâre just shocked Oscar knows that.
He continues as if heâs done nothing out of the ordinary. âEat it, or Iâll sic Callie on you.â
You shudder instantly at the thought. Your meeting is at the imaging lab, but you donât doubt Callie would burst through the lab doors just to force breakfast into your mouth.
Oscar allows himself a tiny, amused smile at your reaction. Satisfied that youâll have something to treat your headache and something to eat, he nudges you toward the door. âGo. Youâll be late.â
And really, how does he know that? You ponder this until you reach the lab, where the likely culprit is sitting innocently.
âHave you been reporting on me to Oscar?â You point an accusing finger at George, fellow neuroscience major and research assistant in the Hamilton lab. George also happens to harbor delusions about Oscar being secretly in love with you. Youâre pretty sure George just likes to stir the pot and watch the ensuing drama unfold, but that has never stopped you from vociferously rebuffing him at every turn.Â
George raises both hands in absolutely unconvincing defense. âI may have mentioned our shared dismay about Lewis moving the weekly check-in to Monday mornings, yeah. Câmon, Oscarâs my friend and teammate, too. Canât I wish the best for my two friends?â
You scoff. âCanât you wish the best for some of your other friends?âÂ
George smiles sunnily. âYou two are in the most dire need, though.â
âGood morning, good morning!â Professor HamiltonâLewis, he insistsâbustles in with his usual good cheer and, best of all, a pot of good tea and pastries from the best bakery in town.Â
You and George fall into the rhythm of the weekly check-in while you munch happily on a spinach and feta danish. At the end of it, you grab a chocolate croissant and wrap it up carefully in napkins, trying not to think too hard about what youâre doing and why youâre doing it.Â
When you exit the building and spot Oscar ascending the steps with his head down and looking at his phone, you feel like youâre a freshman again, tempted to run away at the sight of him. But you straighten your shoulders and lift your head, and your hand doesnât shake at all when you thrust the croissant in front of him, almost hitting him in the forehead with it.Â
His head jerks up, alarm clear in his expression before it melts into something like hesitation, like hope. He points at the croissant, then himself in a For me? kind of way.
The gesture makes you laugh softly. âYes, itâs for you. My professor brought pastries, so. Yeah, you know. Thanks for this morning.â Itâs stilted and awkward, and you think it must be 110Âş in the air around you right now, but youâre glad you did it, especially when Oscarâs entire face turns pink as he takes the croissant from you.Â
âThanks,â he says. âThis place makes my favorite chocolate croissants.â
âI know,â you say before you can think better of it. Then you do think better of it, and you squeak out an, âOkay, bye!â before fleeing the scene. It really is just like freshman year.Â
FRESHMAN YEAR, SECOND SEMESTER
âOh, how the mighty have fallen.â You bemoan the sight before you: Callie, once your staunchest ally willing to die on the no-relationship hill, now happily tucked against Loganâs side in the library, hands entwined underneath the table where youâre all studying.Â
Callie sticks her tongue out at you. âSorry, dearest, I still love you the most.â
Your eyebrows pull together in disdain. âObviously.âÂ
At the same time, Logan presses a kiss to Callieâs temple and agrees, âOf course.â
Your face softens, almost against your will. Callie and Logan are so much in the throes of the honeymoon period that itâs almost cartoonish, but youâre happy for them; really, you are. Your discomfort with their new relationship stems from entirely selfish reasons, namelyâ
âHey, does anyone have a charger I can borrowâoh, hello.â Oscarâs ears go bright red as he waves awkwardly at you, and only you. He might as well be waving a neon sign that says, Iâve had my hand up your dress not 500 feet from here!Â
(Shamefully, you can now say that you kind of understand Lando; last week, you and Oscar had been too impatient to make it to the dorms, so youâd made it work in the stacks of the library, which was the only semi-private place between either of your dorms that was still open late at night. Your only consolation is that, well, at least you made it out of the party.
Oscarâs low murmurs of, There you go, câmon, gorgeous, you look so good like this, as he helped you fall apart on his fingers served as a nice consolation, too, you suppose.)
âHello,â you grit out. âHere, take mine.â You hand him your charger, and when he continues to stand there like a statue, you pointedly jerk your head in the direction he came from. Thankfully, he seems to get the message and shoots you an inscrutable look before going back to his study group two tables away.Â
Callieâs eyes narrow instantly at you. âWhatâs going on between you two?â
âWho, me and Oscar? Nothing, nothing!â you insist, high-pitched even to your own ears.
âNot according to Oscar,â Logan mutters, so quietly you almost miss it.Â
âWerenât you all over each other at the crew party last week?â Callie asks loudly.Â
âKeep your voice down,â you hiss, resisting the urge to turn around to see if Oscar heard her. âWe just. Yâknow. Hook up sometimes. Why, what did he say?â You turn to Logan with zealous focus. Callie repeats the motion, and he looks distinctly regretful about opening up his mouth.
âOh, this and that,â he mumbles. But heâs no match for the heat of yours and Callieâs combined glares. âOkay, he just said he doesnât know what your vibes are.â
Youâre instantly skeptical. âHe said that?â
Logan grimaces. âWell, not in those exact words. But I think heâs been⌠confused? About whateverâs going on between you two.â
âWhich is nothing,â you rebuke sharply. Even if half the campus has seen you and Oscar making out at some party or another, youâre not about to pour your heart out in front of Logan, whoâs still Oscarâs best friend at the end of the day. You flick your eyes significantly at Callie, and she understands immediately.
âLogan, do you mind getting me an iced tea? From the cafĂŠ next door, not the one in here. The cafĂŠ next door has the ice cubes I like,â she explains. âAnd take Oscar with you. He looks like he could use a walk.â
Logan glances at the completely full iced tea in front of her, then between you two, then over at Oscar, and he catches on, too. âOf course, baby. It might take a while, so weâll be back in five⌠tenâŚ? Okay, ten minutes,â he allows gallantly.Â
As soon as heâs grabbed a confused-looking Oscar out of his seat and theyâre both out of earshot, Callie raises her eyebrow at you, and you sink your head into your hand and heave a huge sigh. âOh god, I donât even know. Me and Oscar⌠Itâs not, like, a thing. I never even intend for it to happen! It just happens.â
âYou and Oscar hooking up every time you see each other at a party and then pretending like youâre distant acquaintances the next day is a thing that just happens?âÂ
âWell, when you put it like that... But in my defense, itâs better now than it was a few months ago, when I was still acting like I had never met the guy.â
Callie offers you a sarcastic thumbs-up. âWow, youâre the model of emotional maturity.â She pauses, looks at you like youâre a frightened woodland creature, and begins again. âHeâs a good guy, you know.â
You sigh louder. âHe is! He really is. I dunno, itâs easy enough to fool around with him when weâre both a little drunk and Miley Cyrus is playing on the dance floor, but every time I see him in public I just want to run away because god, heâs really perceived me, yâknow? The idea that he knows anything about me is so humiliating, but at this point, he knows a lot about me.â
âYou ever heard of an avoidant attachment style?â Callie asks rhetorically; she already knows what your response will be.
âOh, come on, enough of that pop psychology bullshitââ
Callie smirks. âYeah, yeah, I know, you sanctimonious science snob.â
âSemantic know-it-all,â you retort. âDamn, I gotta give it to you for the alliteration, though.âÂ
You lock eyes with her, and then you both burst out laughing. Youâre still giggling by the time Logan and Oscar return with an iced tea for Callie and a banana smoothie that Oscar tries to pass off casually into your hands.Â
You stare blankly at the smoothie. You figure his study group is done, so you ask, âYou want me to hold this for you while you move your stuff over here?â
âNo, Iâitâs for you. The drink. You probably donât get enough potassium. Most people donât, actually. At least, thatâs what the sign at the cafĂŠ said. Itâs their special this week.â Oscarâs voice fades off into a mumble, blush intensifying across his cheeks with every word.
âOh.â Youâre quite touched by the kind gesture, random though it may be. âBut I donât like bananas,â you say thoughtlessly.Â
As soon as the words leave your mouth, you wish you could take them backâhis eyebrows pull down, his mouth sets into a flat line, and he moves to take the smoothie from your hands. You think maybe heâll drink it himself, but he lobs it unceremoniously into the nearest trash can, which sparks some vague irritation in you.Â
âThat is so wasteful,â you begin, mulish for no real reason other than your embarrassment about what you said and not knowing what to do with all this prickling heat at the base of your neck.Â
âItâs no less wasteful than you not drinking it,â he snaps.Â
âI didnât say I wasnât going to drink itââ
âYou said you donât like bananas. Itâs a banana smoothie.â
âThat doesnât mean I wasnât going to drink it!â
âItâs basically the same thingââ
âDonât put words in my mouthââ
Callie snickers. âI can think of other things you could put in her mouth.âÂ
You and Oscar turn twin expressions of shock on her.Â
Now she cackles. âWhat, like youâre not familiar with each otherâs mouths? Oscar, sweetie, she doesnât like bananas, but she loves berries. Ask me next time if youâre unsure, okay?âÂ
Oscar gapes at her for a few seconds, mutters something about needing to finish a problem set, then retreats back to his study group.Â
Logan looks at his girlfriend with newfound admiration. âThat was so hot,â he blurts out.Â
âI know.â Callie throws her hair over her shoulder; the picture of self-satisfaction.Â
You groan. Youâre never living this one down.Â
PRESENT DAY
The AC in your sorority house has been out for four days now, and the unusual heat wave continues; high-nineties during the day and not much better at night. You may not have retained much from high school physics, but you know heat risesâyouâre practically melting in your room on the top floor. Even at night, every part of your exposed skin is unpleasantly sticky, and you havenât had a good nightâs sleep in four days.Â
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Tonight, youâre desperate enough that youâve dragged your desk chair out onto your little balcony, folding yourself into the cramped space with a stack of research papers propped against your knees and highlighters tucked behind your ears. If you canât sleep, you can at least make some progress on the thesis youâre doing in the Hamilton lab. Thereâs even a pathetic little breeze out here on the balcony.Â
Youâre deep in the weeds of literature review when your phone buzzes in your shorts, which makes you groan. The thought of fishing your phone out of your undoubtedly sweaty back pocket is so unwelcome, but needs must.Â
Oscarâs name at the top of your notifications is the last thing you expect to see.Â
oscar: I can hear the wheels in ur brain turning all the way from here
oscar: Here, where the AC is on, btw. And Iâm just working on my capstone, so I wonât disturb u if u come over
Your head snaps up and across the way, where Oscar waves sardonically at you through his window.Â
(Youâd almost lost it a few days ago when you discovered that Oscar is the current resident in the frat next door whose window practically kisses your balcony. Fate is a cruel mistress; the discovery came about because you got a text from Oscarâthe first youâd gotten from him in well over a year, and in fact the first in your text history because youâd deleted everything from beforeâtelling you to pull your damn curtains together. Mortified, youâd immediately shut down your blasĂŠ habit of changing anywhere in your room without care to who could potentially see.)
You consider your options: continuing to live in miserable, sleepless, soupy heat, or blessed AC paired with an opportunity to address the elephant in the room.Â
A bead of sweat rolls down your neck, collecting in the valley of your chest, and yep, thatâs it. You cap your highlighter and text Oscar back.Â
you: open your window
oscar: What why
you: iâm coming in through the window
oscar: ???? Thereâs a perfectly good door 2 floors below us
you: a PUBLIC door
you: plus iâve seen like 30 people up on your roof at once itâll be fine
oscar: Yeah but theyâre not climbing onto the roof from ur rickety ass balcony
you: iâve BEEN one of the 30 people up on that roof, AND iâve been on this balcony. itâll be fine!!!
oscar: U r impossible
you: yeah yeah whatever itâs the cross i bear. open your damn windowÂ
Oscar slides his window up, disapproval already etched into his eyebrows. âHate to throw a wrench in your plan, but my window has a screen on it.â
You roll your eyes. âFirst of all, you love to throw a wrench in my plan. Second of all, and speaking of, donât you have a screwdriver or something lying around that you can use to disassemble the screen?â
His mouth drops open. âYou want me to take the screen off? Seriously, I get that youâre embarrassed to be seen with me, but it canât be so bad that youâre willing to go this far just to avoid the front door.â
âIâm not embarrassed to be seenâwhat the hell are you talking about? You know what, fine, forget it, if you canât take the screen off, you couldâve just said so! Whatâs the point of being an engineering major if you canât evenââ
âOh my god, as if Iâm incapable of taking the screen offâJesus Christ, youâre soâ!â Oscarâs voice dissolves into a litany of muttered exasperations as he disappears from the window frame.Â
You wonder if this is it, if youâve finally pushed him too far, and heâll just stop interacting with you at all. The thought is surprisingly sobering; stinging, even. Mechanically, you resume highlighting the research paper in front of you while ignoring the way your shorts stick to your thighs and the suspicious pressure building behind your eyes.Â
But then thereâs some light clanging, followed by Oscarâs head popping out of his window, which is now screenless. He folds his arms across the windowsill and gives you an unimpressed look. When you blink deer-in-the-headlights eyes back at him, he sighs and lets one corner of his mouth twitch upwards. âWell, donât make me come get you.â
Relief floods through you, both for the AC so close within your grasp and for the reassurance that heâs still willing to put up with you. âYay! Okay, take this first.â You scramble out of your chair and gather your stack of papers together, moving to stretch over the railing of your balcony to hand it to Oscar. But the distance is farther than youâd gauged, and it quickly turns precarious.
âBe carefulââ
âRelax, itâs fine! Can you justââ
âItâs definitely not fine. Wait, donâtââ
âMove your headââ
âYouâre going to give me a concussionââ
âDonât be so dramaticââ
âOof.âÂ
Somehow, he manages to pull you in through the window, and you both land in a rumpled heap on the floor of his room.Â
âThis is a nice rug,â you remark from your position face-down in it.Â
He groans. âYour elbow is in my ribs.â
âHold on, let me get upââ
âThatâs worseâhow did you manage to make it worse? Fuck meââ
âDonât move, let me just⌠There!â You finally disentangle from him successfully, and then youâre giggling at the sight of his disgruntled appearance, hair all messed up and cheek creased from some element of the tumble.Â
He glares balefully at you. âWas this worth avoiding the front door?â
Youâre still shaking with mirth when you scoot closer to him on the floor, much to his continued exasperation, but he goes completely still when you reach out to touch him. âSorry,â you murmur, fingers gentle in his hair as you smooth down the ruffled strands.Â
Oscarâs forgotten why he was annoyed at you in the first place. âSâokay,â he says, eyes fluttering closed at the absentminded sweep of your thumb across the crease on his cheek.Â
His skin goes pink in the wake of your every touch, and itâs so heartbreakingly familiar that you almost lose your nerve. But even if the timing is a little earlier than youâd imagined, the opportunity is right there for the taking, so you figure you might as well. âSorry,â you repeat, barely above a whisper now as you lean in even closer, fitting your palm to the curve of his cheek. âWant me to kiss it better?â
Eyes still closed, Oscar raises his eyebrows. âSure,â he says, joking because he thinks you are, too. Strange that youâre suddenly so comfortable addressing the elephant in the room, but thatâs fine, he can roll with the punchesâ
You kiss him like itâs the first time, soft and a little shy.Â
Itâs so unexpected that heâs frozen for a second, eyebrows still raised like heâs expecting a return quip from you. But then muscle memory kicks in, overriding all good sense and inhibitions and nine long months of not knowing where the hell he went wrong with you, and heâs kissing you back with a fervor bordering on desperation. If nothing else, he still knows this: exactly how you like to be kissed, all the places where youâre hypersensitive and responsive, the trembling gasps he can pull from you if heâs just clever enough with his teeth and his tongue.Â
And he may know all of your tells by heart, but you donât even have to try to unravel him. Itâs not fair what you do to him, and it never has been; he loses his head, his restraint, and his treacherous heart in one fell swoop to the shocked little Oh! that you whimper into his mouth, to the overheated press of your chest against his, to the way your fingers curl into the collar of his shirt and tug because youâre so caught up in sensation.
He doesnât even register how you got into his lap; only that youâre there, sweet and pliant like the fantasy heâs been punishing himself with, all these months knowing he canât have the real thing. But this is real, and youâre so fucking lovely that he needs to tell you immediately or heâll dieâ
The tentative, searching press of your hips against his is like a bucket of ice-cold water in his face.
He wrenches himself away from you with a gasp, and he doesnât know if he hates himself more for being the cause of your protesting whine or for losing his resolve and kissing you back in the first place. âWhat,â he heaves out a breath, âare you doing?â
A marriage of hurt and humiliation flash across your face. He decides that thatâs what he hates himself for the most, but thereâs no going back now.Â
âWhat do you mean?â you snap, scrambling off of his lap and wrapping your arms around yourself like armor.
He wants to hug you, to comfort you. He wants to go back to five minutes ago, before youâd kissed him. He wants to go back to thirty seconds ago, when you were still too wrapped up in each other to remember yourselves. Instead, he just looks at you, wild-eyed and kiss-swollen and the loveliest sight heâs ever seen. Heâs not sure he could ever regret kissing you, but he regrets that he may never be able to see you like this again.
âIsnât this what you invited me over for?â you bite out, unable to hold the silence like he can.
He shakes his head mutely.
You scoff as you scrabble about for the sheaf of research papers that had scattered across his floor in your rough-and-tumble entrance through the window. âWell, you didnât have to invite me over just to tell me youâre not interested. I got that message pretty clearly sophomore year, actually.â
Heâd rather rip his beating heart out of his chest than add to your distress, but he canât hold his agony just between his own two hands anymore. âWhat the hell are you on about?â
You stand with your papers tucked against your chest, adding distance and height between you and him to better steel your nerves. âListen, I have no interest in playing games with you. And I have a pretty healthy ego, but I know not everyone wants me. I was gonna say you should just tell me if you donât, but I guess you just did. Thanks, Oscar. I almost forgot where we stood with each other. Iâll see myself outâyou have a front door, or so Iâm told.â
Youâre gone before he can formulate a response, and all thatâs left is a stray highlighter of yours that had rolled under his bed, and the echo of the way youâd said his name on your way out.
SOPHOMORE YEAR, FIRST SEMESTER
Youâve decided to turn over a new leaf. New (school) year, new you. Freshman you should hardly be able to recognize sophomore you; thatâs your goal, anyways.Â
First order of business: impress Professor Hamilton enough this year to have him sign on as your thesis advisor. Second order of business: conquer sorority rush. Third order of business: be normal about Oscar Piastri.Â
Number one and two are going along swimmingly. The third oneâŚ
âGod, I just think heâs so hot,â sighs the girl in front of you in the line for the bathroom. Her friend, who you know vaguely in the same way youâve gotten to know most of the upperclassmen in your sorority over the course of rush, has the decency to try to shush her. You donât realize why thatâs necessary until the girl protests, âWhatâs wrong? Itâs not like Oscar can hear me.â She lets out a drunken giggle. âI wouldnât even mind if he could.â
Her friend swats her gently on the shoulder. âGirl, seriously, shut up.â She glances back at you and mouths, Sorry!
You instantly overcorrect. âOh god, no! Please, itâs totally fine. Iâm not dating him, or seeing him exclusively, or anything, really! Iâm not even hooking up with him anymore. Go for it, girl!â You aim the last part at the girl, whose delight (and several Twisted Teas) manifests in a smacking kiss to your cheek. Her friend hauls her into the bathroom with an admonishment and another apologetic smile back at you.Â
God, this school is too small. Orâprobably more accuratelyâyou and Oscar had been far too conspicuous last year. In any case, thatâs all behind you now; youâve had a summer of growth and reflection, and youâre a new woman now. Oscar Piastri and his effect on your hormones will rule your world no more.Â
âHello, gorgeous.â But then thereâs that voice, lazy and low in your ear, sending a visceral bolt of heat down your spine.
Heat, which you ignore judiciously, because youâre a new woman now. Or something.
âHi, Oscar,â you respond, schooling your tone into a kind of placid neutrality that belies how hyperaware you are of his arm brushing against yours, and holy shit, did his arms get bigger over summer breakâ
New woman. Right.Â
He smiles faintly and crosses his arms over his chest like he doesnât know how that affects you. âGood summer?âÂ
âMmhm,â you manage, counting backwards from 10 now to distract yourself from the wide expanse of his chest. Youâre a weak woman, is what you are.Â
âMiss me?â he asks, eyes dropping shamelessly to your mouth. The intention in his expression is enough to make you forget, momentarily, what youâve set out to do this year. Youâre not sure where all this brazen confidence came from, but it looks good on him, burnishing him golden and bright, sending your heart stuttering in your chest and the floor shifting beneath your feet.Â
Or maybe thatâs the girl you saw in line for the bathroom earlier, stumbling into you with an apology and widened eyes once she realizes who youâre talking to. She begins, âOh, are you guysâŚ?â
Nope, back to your original plan. âWeâre not!â you insist, ungluing yourself from Oscarâs side (what the hell, when had you even gotten there?).Â
âYou totally should!â She flaps a hand behind her at Lando, who sends you and Oscar an obnoxious wink. âIâm going upstairs with him instead!â
âYay! Have fun,â you say weakly, ignoring the way Oscarâs gaze is drilling into the side of your head. Without looking at him, you explain, âI was just telling her earlier that weâre not dating, or seeing each other exclusively, or hooking up, or anything. So. Yâknow. FYI.â
âReally? Thatâs news to me,â he says. Youâd bet anything heâs giving you a flat, unimpressed look right now.Â
You nod with false enthusiasm. âWell, yes! Hence the FYI. For your information. Now youâre informed!â
âYippee,â he intones dryly.Â
You figure this horrifically awkward PSA canât be that much worse with the addition of eye contact, so you decide to face him again. But it is worse now, because he looks a little miserable and all the more beautiful for it, and god, you really need to get a grip; itâs so embarrassing to feel like this about some guy in a frat basement.Â
Thereâs no way out but through, so you take a deep breath and begin again. âI just figure, with Callie and Logan and everythingâI mean, theyâre still going strong, and it doesnât look like thatâs going to change anytime soon. Not that Iâd want it to change; Iâm happy they have each other! But you and I are, um, probably going to keep seeing a lot of each other.â
He scoffs. âCareful, now. If we see any more of each other, someone might think weâre hooking up, or seeing each other exclusively, or dating.âÂ
You scowl at him. âMy point is that since our best friends are dating, we should try to play nice with each other.â
âAnd youâd know just how nice I can play with you,â he drawls, low and slow and so fucking hot you think you deserve some sort of award for holding onto your resolve.Â
You laugh shrilly to distract yourself from the heat pooling in your navel. âAnyways! I think we should be friends. Or at least, uh, normal acquaintances.â You stick your hand out, elbow locked in the stiffest handshake you can muster.Â
Oscar stares at your hand. The thing is, he knows you by now. Maybe not in the way a friend would know you, but he knows how your instinct is to crack a jokeâor, Christ above, get into his lap and destroy his higher brain functionâat the earliest sign of emotional intimacy. Heâs seen how skittish you get when he doles out any of the tender affection that he barely manages to contain in the cage of his measured demeanor. Sometimes he feels like he canât breathe around you for all the adoration that swells in his lungs, but he knows youâd spook and retreat if he ever spoke a word of it too soon. Itâs probably crazy, and itâs certainly stupid, but heâs halfway in love with you, and heâs selfish enough to accept âfriendsâ if thatâs what you need before youâre willing to look him in the eye and acknowledge all the devotion bursting at the seams of him.Â
So he takes your hand and shakes it, resisting the urge to pull you closer and just kiss you out of your inane platonic proposal. That would be the fastest way to end this charade, and it is a charadeâhe knows what you look like when you want something you wonât let yourself have, has memorized that look, treasures it, can taste it on his tongue if he closes his eyes and thinks about it. And he recognizes it on you now, easy.Â
But heâs patient, and heâs foolish, and heâll do anything you ask. âFriends or normal acquaintances,â he agrees, crossing his fingers behind his back.Â
PRESENT DAY
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. But hell is probably also where the correct answers to your physics pre-lab assignment reside, so youâre marching there with your head held high.Â
And you keep your head held high, all the way from your sorority house into the depths of the old science building where the physics department still sits, all the way until you peek into the student lounge and spot the top of Oscarâs head, bowed down over his laptop on top of a repurposed lab bench.
Your immediate reaction is to fling yourself back from the edge of the doorframe and flatten yourself against the wall, even though thereâs no way he saw you. Then you call yourself all kinds of fool; you shouldâve sent Callie in to scout the scene for you before assuming thereâd be other TAs available at office hours.Â
But hold on, why are you embarrassed right now? Who wouldnât have interpreted a frat guyâs late-night invite to come over and enjoy his AC as a poorly-disguised booty call? You donât think youâre particularly far out in left field for that one. Sure, you probably shouldnât have agreed or actually gone over, but youâre a weak womanâOscar Piastri is still the best kisser youâve ever known, and thereâs still a huge, unresolved black hole between you two. God forbid a girl try her hand at conflict resolution and end up making out with her counterparty.
Righteousness restored, you tilt your chin up again and breeze into the student lounge with an aggressively friendly smile. âOscar! Youâre on TA duty now, right? Can you help me with the last few questions of the pre-lab?â
He heaves a sigh like heâs being asked to dig his own grave, and your smile freezes in place. âYeah, I guess,â he says, gesturing for you to take a seat in the empty row of tall swivel chairs alongside the lab bench.Â
Your smile doesnât budge, even as you curse him out in your head for his bitchy attitude. What right does he have to go around acting so beleaguered, so put out? Between the two of you, youâre quite certain youâre the one who keeps getting rebuffed. But no matter; thereâs a grade on the line here, and you will persevere, you will overcome, you will rise above the frayâ
Oscar coughs. âCan you stop smiling like that? Youâre freaking me out.â
Your eyes narrow, even as your smile remains artificially perky. âNo clue what you mean. This is my normal smile.â
âThat is not your normal smile.â
âYes, it is. But please, Oscar, feel free to keep mansplaining my own smile to me.â
âIâm not mansplainingâyou know what? Fuck it.â He rolls his eyes to the ceiling, takes a breath, and says, with exaggerated feeling, âRoad work ahead? I sure hope it does!â
You canât help it. Instinctually, your mouth curves into a genuine smile, and a giggle escapes you.Â
âSee? Thatâs your normal smile. God, I canât believe that bit still gets you.â He slips you a sideways glance, pressing his lips together into a marshmallow-soft smile at the sight of yours; he canât help it, either. He lets himself watch you laugh for a few more seconds before remembering to have you pull out your pre-lab assignment, and then itâs all business from there.Â
Ten minutes pass comfortably with him checking your work, mostly nodding and confirming that youâre on the right track. Youâre almost grateful for how quickly the awkwardness of your entrance has been dealt with, but when you eventually get to the part of the pre-lab that has been giving you the most trouble, he starts sighing and frowning and generally looking like heâd rather be anywhere else every time you ask a question. Itâs getting on your nerves and dispelling any semblance of a positive atmosphere that has lingered after his stupid joke, and after a few minutes of it, youâve had enough.Â
âOkay, what is your problem?â You throw your hands up. âI get that Iâm not a physics whiz, but Iâm not stupid, either. You donât have to sigh like itâs some huge inconvenience every time you start explaining something to me. Youâre getting paid to do this, arenât you?â
He gawks at you. âWhat? Iâm notâI donât think youâre stupid. At all. I think youâre terrifyingly brilliant, actually, but thatâs not the point. IâmâŚâ He exhales roughly. âIâm uncomfortable, okay? Iâm trying to figure out how to apologize for how things went down in my room the other night, but I donât know how.â
Your face shutters in an instant. âThanks for the sentiment, but thereâs really no need. I can pick up on a hint.â
He lets out a frustrated sound. âWell, I canât. What the hell kind of hint do you think Iâm giving?â
âI canât believe youâre making me say this out loudâthe hint that youâre not interested, Oscar! You donât want me, or anything to do with me. Fine, whatever. Life goes on. Can we get on with the pre-lab?âÂ
A strangled laugh punches out of his chest. âYou canât be serious. You think Iâm not interested? That I donât want you?â Suddenly, he reaches out and grabs the back of your chair, swiveling it around to face him.Â
The motion brings you closer to him than youâd expected; your knees knock together, and your next inhale seems to pull from the air in his own chest. Heâs looking as determined as youâve ever seen him, like the way he gets before a race, all single-minded and certain, ready to forge the world he wants by virtue of his own strength. But thereâs no race ahead of him, no teammates breathing in unison on calm waters. Right now, thereâs just you and him, and thereâs a flush of color across his cheekbones already, emotions dialed all the way up for every inelegant word he doesnât know how to say.Â
âWanting you has never been a problem for me,â he says finally. âI usually have the opposite problem, honestly.â I want you too much, all the time, everywhere, in whatever way youâll have me. But he doesnât say that. Instead, he just smiles at you, a little shy but sincere, almost helpless in his affection.Â
âOh. Well, you couldâve just said so,â you murmur, all the fight having gone out of you the moment you saw him smile like that.Â
He gives you a knowing look. âThereâs a lot of things we couldâve just said, gorgeous.â
The return of that particular epithet sends a full-body shiver through you, which his eyes seem to positively sparkle in delight upon catching. âShut up,â you say pre-emptively.Â
He exhales on a laugh, lighter now for having told you a fraction of what he feels. âWhatever else happens, you can always be sure of that.â That I want you, that I think youâre brilliant, that Iâm lucky just to have you look at me.Â
Your head tilts, surveying him. âPromise?â
âPromise.â And this time, he doesnât cross his fingers behind his back.Â
SOPHOMORE YEAR, FIRST SEMESTER
Your firm commitment to your friends-or-normal-acquaintances charade with Oscar has taken you to many foolish places, but this is probably the most embarrassing of them all.
âRemember,â your sororityâs New Member Educator trills, âyou should only do it if you want to!â
Bit late for that now, you think, staring at the garishly pink fuzzy handcuffs attaching your left wrist to Oscarâs right and a bottle of shitty champagne between you.
Throwing your name into the mix for Edward Fortyhands had seemed like a fun idea a few hours ago, when you were fresh off of the buzz of sorority initiation. It seemed harmless even forty-five minutes ago, when youâd stepped into the fraternity house to which Oscar now belongs, and early-2010s Kesha had you slut-dropping it up and down the dance floor.
Now, you curse your previous naĂŻvetĂŠ. Of course Oscarâs name would get called alongside yours for this stupid drinking game; of course heâd be dressed in some nondescript black T-shirt with his hair tousled like heâd just woken up, straight out of your guiltiest daydreams; of course youâre on some new birth control that is driving your hormones haywire, fantasizing about your friend-and-normal-acquaintance.Â
âJesus, why are we doing this with champagne?â Oscar complains beside you. Heâs glaring at the shitty champagne as if he could pulverize it with his eyes alone.Â
âThey ordered too much for initiation,â you sigh mournfully, having already gone through all the stages of grief about this.Â
He glances sideways at you and purses his lips instinctually (a pout by any other name) at the sight of your forlorn expression. Well, that just wonât do. Youâve got a problem, and he can fix it. He tugs gently at your wrist with his and cocks his head toward the staircase behind him. âCâmon, letâs go up.â
Your brain stutters to a halt. Is he asking you toâŚ? Really? Right now? Itâs not like you donât want it, but youâre not even two months into being friends-or-normal-acquaintances.Â
Your heart pounds in your ears the whole time you follow him upstairs, almost like white noise drowning out the sounds of the party: your sorority sisters laughing, the bass thumping from someoneâs amateur Soundcloud remix, the clink of champagne bottles against each other.Â
He leads you into someoneâs bedroom at the end of the hallway, dimly lit in blue and purple LEDs, and the sounds from the party truly fade to nothing when the door shuts behind you with a solid thump.Â
âImpressive soundproofing in here,â you remark, trying for casual and ending up somewhere near breathy.Â
Oscar barely reacts to your comment; he makes a beeline instead for a backpack sitting at the base of the futon sofa pushed up against the far wall. You make a confused sound as you follow, and you wonât lieâyouâre a little disappointed he didnât pick up on your brazen innuendo. But you sit down awkwardly when he does, and you watch the back of his head as he rummages around in the backpack one-handed. Frankly, youâre approaching offense; are you not entertaining him enough?Â
Youâre about to open your mouth and snap something sharp at him when he pulls out a small, black case with a triumphant smile. âKnew I packed this today,â he says, apropos of nothing. âHold still, âkay?âÂ
Still one-handed, he works open the case and extracts a small tool. Youâre momentarily captivated by the scrunch between his brows as he concentrates on the handcuffs linking you together, but then you realize what heâs trying to do. Youâre not quite sure how to feel about itâimpressed, if he really manages to pick the lock, or offended that he doesnât want to be attached to you?
You gasp when the cuffs click open softly. He grins and pumps his fist in the air with his freed arm, which is horribly endearing and only adds to the tangle of emotions running through youâdesire warring with resolve, a warm bloom of affection youâre barely willing to acknowledge warring with nonchalance you can barely fake.Â
Shaking your wrist free, you rub your freed wrist where the silly pink feathers had irritated your skin. âWhereâd you learn to do that?â you ask, now firmly settled on impressed.
Oscar shrugs, but he canât hide how self-satisfied he looks. âYouTube.â
âYou find yourself handcuffed that often?â
He snorts even as he reaches for your wrist, fingers sweeping more gently over your skin than yours. âNo, smartass. I, um. I like heist movies. And Logan bet me fifty a few weeks ago that I couldnât get out of these costume handcuffs with the toolkits we use in materials lab. Easy money, really.â
âStill. Kinda cool, that,â you say lamely, all sophisticated syntax having departed from your brain at the soothing, methodic brush of his fingers against your wrist. No, this is ridiculousâyou need to pull yourself together. âWhatâs your favorite heist movie?â you ask abruptly.Â
âItâs not one of the big ones, but I watched it with my sisters when we were kids, and we all loved it. The Italian Job. Thereâs such a sick getaway scene in it; I really wanted to drive a Mini Cooper after seeing it.â He gets more animated the more he talks about the movie, hands moving about (and no longer impeding your higher brain function, thank god) as he explains the heist to you.Â
Thatâs how you end up tucked into his side on the sofa, watching movie clips on his laptop, balanced between your knee and his. Eventually, you move on to random compilations of funny videosâRoad work ahead? I sure hope it does! makes you giggle uncontrollably, and he doesnât fare much better when it comes to videos of cats misbehaving.Â
The blue-and-purple lighting of the room makes time feel suspended, so much so that you find yourself nodding off against his shoulder. The cadence of his voice, calm and steady as he tells you a random storyâsomething about practice running late tonight and rushing straight here, where his big, Danny, had offered his room to safely store Oscarâs backpackâonly contributes to your sleepiness. It doesnât take long before youâre completely knocked out.Â
Oscar trails off in his story when he notices the evening out of your breath on his shoulder, and then heâs studying you with an intensity that he rarely lets himself indulge in these days, when youâre so hell-bent on this friends-or-normal-acquaintances situation.Â
Asleep like this, you look so much younger and unguarded, free from whatever tower youâve put your heart in. Itâs an apt comparisonâhe really does feel like the prince in Rapunzel sometimes, if Rapunzel kept her window locked and the prince was just talking to the wall. Heâd feel more pathetic about it if he didnât catch you looking at him so often, staring him down like an experiment run out of your control. What that look means is beyond him; all he knows is that he likes that you keep looking.Â
Suddenly, his laptop starts blaring the familiar jangle of an incoming FaceTime call. Itâs from Lando, which he declines immediately, cursing under his breath when it clearly wakes you up.
âSorry I fell asleep,â you say, yawning and stretching against him in a way that he studiously ignores for the sake of his own sanity.
âNo worries,â he manages to get out in a normal-sounding voice.Â
Landoânot so easily deterredâsends Oscar a series of exclamation marks that flash conspicuously across the corner of his laptop screen.Â
Lando: first of all RUDE u didnât pick up so i could announce my news
Lando: which is that theyâre gonna let me do the thing
Lando: THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE
Oscar sends him a thumbs-up emoji in response, then turns to you with a wry grin. âHeâs going to be insufferable about this.â
âAs he is with most things,â you agree lightheartedly. âWhat are they letting him do?â
âThe âpartyâs overâ announcement. You know, the whole, âif youâre not a brother or fucking a brother, get out!â That thing.â Oscar has the grace to look embarrassed as he says it, nose twitching a mile a minute. The tips of his ears are red, too, and your instant reaction is to coo at himâwhich would be insane, obviously, so you donât.Â
Instead, you just raise an eyebrow. âYou guys sure know how to charm a girl.â
âYeah, well.â He coughs and raises his hand for a high-five. âGuess Iâll see you around?â
Your other eyebrow goes up. âDude, are you serious?â
He winces as soon as dude leaves your mouth; though, considering the high-five, he thinks he probably deserved it. âOkay, never mind. Can you just, like, forget the last five seconds? Please?â
But youâre laughing outright now, almost as hard as you did at Road work ahead?, so he finds that he doesnât regret it much.Â
âAlright, alright,â you splutter, still laughing. âIâll see myself out before you try to, like, fist-bump me or something. Safe to say Iâm not a brother, and Iâm definitely not fucking a brother. Bye, Oscar! See you around.â
The sound of your laughter trails behind you as you go, leaving Oscar a bit stunned in your wake. Thatâs not an infrequent state of being for him when heâs around you, butâreally? Are you comfortable enough with him to joke about your obviously not-platonic history now? And is that something he should be happy about? Should he joke about it?
Lando: mate i was trying to tell this girl like hey iâm sorry but u have to leave cuz ur not a brother or fucking a brother
Lando: and she goes⌠not yet!
Lando: so now iâm going to hers
Lando: life is awesome
Oscar groans and lets his head thunk back against the wall. If only his life could be so awesome. But then he remembers the shape of your laughter, the weight of your head on his shoulder, and, wellâhe wouldnât change a thing.Â
PRESENT DAY
Thankfully, the heat wave ends, and AC is restored to full working order in your sorority house a few days later. Notwithstanding the heat wave, you had actually quite enjoyed getting work done on your balcony that one night, which is why you find yourself out there again a week or two later, noise-cancelling headphones on and music arrangement software running.Â
Youâre so immersed in your work that you donât notice Oscarâs bedroom light go on, nor do you see him coming to the window to wave increasingly harder at you.Â
Heâs saying your name as loudly as he thinks could be acceptable in the neighborhood at 11pm (itâs just Greek row, but he was raised with manners), to no avail. Itâs almost comical how hard heâs flapping his arms in your directionâuntil itâs purely comical, and then he has to stop out of preservation for his dignity.Â
Unfortunately, his fallback plan is not much more dignified, not to mention significantly more absurd, but these are the things you drive him to do.Â
Youâre bopping your head along to a syncopated alto line when you feel something hit the side of your face. Startled, you look across the way to find Oscar frowning at you, looking a little out of breath. Now entirely bewildered, you slip your headphones off and bend down to retrieve whatever hit you in the faceâ
âDid you just throw a paper airplane at me?â you splutter.Â
He blows an errant curl out of his face. âSeveral, actually.â He juts his chin at where a few of his earlier, less hardy attempts had landed without contact at your feet.Â
You gape at the assortment of paper airplanes lying around you. âWhat is wrong with you?â you wonder, more rhetorical than not.Â
âI was calling your name for, like, two minutes straight,â he says, as if thatâs any explanation.Â
âYou didnât think to text? Or, I dunno, actually call?â
Heâs silent for long enough that you know his answer is no, he didnât think of that, but heâs not about to admit it. You have to shake your head in disbeliefâengineering boys, honestly. But then again, as you peer closer at the rather sophisticated folds of the paper plane, you figure thereâs something to be said about a guy whoâs good with his hands. You tell him as much, to which he just coughs and mumbles something incomprehensible.Â
âWhat?â
His ears are bright red. âI said, thatâs what she said.â
You stare blankly at him.Â
He coughs again. âSorry. Instinct. Too much time with Lando, probably.âÂ
A grin splits across your face. âGod, you guys are so lame. But I like that you think girls are so universally experiencing pleasure at the hands of men. If wishing made it so, yâknow?â
He wrinkles his nose. âOkay, when you put it like thatâŚâ
âSorry, was it better the way you put it, like a pre-pubescent boy?â You laugh at his disgruntled expression, and you pointedly do not mention how his hands were, as ever, too clever by half with you. Thatâs a can of worms you know better than to open right now. âAnyways, was there something you needed from me?â
His ears go redder, if thatâs possible. âUm, no. I mean, yes, kind of. I have your⌠highlighter. From, ah, a few weeks ago. You left it in my room.â He trails off into a mumble again as he realizes how inane it all sounds. Truthfully, he just wanted an excuse to talk to you, outside of physics lab or office hours when there are other people crowding around for his help and attention, and outside of nights out that feel too cavalier for what heâs trying to do. Not that he really knows what heâs trying to doâhe just knows that something broke between you two last year, and heâll be damned if he doesnât try to fix it.Â
To his surprise, you perk up immediately. âOh my god, Iâve been looking for that everywhere! Itâs my favorite highlighter.â
âYou have a favorite highlighter?â
âDuh. Hand it over, Mr. Wright.â
âYou know, itâs actually pretty hotly debated whether the Wright brothers really invented the first airplane, because technically speakingââ
âOscar, I swear toââ
âOkay, okay, Iâm going, Iâm going!â He disappears from the window frame, then reappears a few seconds later with your beloved highlighter in hand. âHere, catchâoh, fuck.â
The two of you stare down at the bushes where your highlighter has landed, two stories below.Â
You breathe out deeply through your nose. âYouâre so lucky youâre fast on the water. Your aim sucks.â
He grimaces. âItâs dark, and I donât have my contacts in, okay? Just donât move, Iâll get it for you.âÂ
You watch him disappear from view again, presumably to go outside and retrieve your highlighter. Youâre a little annoyed and a little amused, but mostly just confused, because you donât know how to act around him anymore. Not that youâve ever really known how to act around him; youâre self-aware enough to recognize that. But the web youâve weaved between you is more tangled than ever now. He says he wants you, but he wonât kiss youâdespite the multiple times youâve made eye contact at parties in the last few weeks (three years ago, thatâs all it would have taken). He says heâs always wanted you, but you remember why he has your highlighter, after all. And you remember all those unanswered texts, over a year ago.Â
And yet, you know heâs telling the truth about wanting you, and always wanting you. You know itâs the truth because heâs a shit liar, and he wears desire like he was made for it; if nothing else, the flush on his cheeks gives him away every time.
So he wants you, but he also doesnât want you? Or maybe he wants you, but not in the way youâve been offering? Or maybe the heat wave has fried your brain, and youâre seeing mirages in the mist.
Thankfully, his whisper-shout of your name breaks you out of your descent into madness. You peer down at where heâs standing at the entrance to your sorority house, motioning at the door. Right, back to business. But as you go inside and put your street shoes on, you remember the militantly perky representative from the national headquarters of your sorority staying in the guest room at the house this week, and you groan out loud.Â
you: shit you canât come in through the front door
oscar: Wtf is with ur aversion to front doors
you: no iâm serious this time
you: our ldc is here this week and sheâs staying in the house
oscar: Ur what
you: LDC??? like
you: âleadership development consultantâ
you: basically a recent grad who works for national and she travels around visiting chapters to check in on them and help them do stuff? idk sheâs here for rush
you: why am i explaining this to you omg donât you guys have these too????
oscar: Ohhhhhh thatâs who that random dude who shows up once a year is?
you: god
you: men do the bare minimum
oscar: But why canât I come in thru the front door
you: technically national rules say weâre not allowed to have guys in the house after 10pm
oscar: Fr????
you: welcome to the patriarchy! itâs well and alive in sororities
oscar: Thatâs so fucking stupid
you: your allyship is noted
you: anyways no one follows the 10pm thing usually but weâre all pretending to while our ldc is here
you: so thatâs why you canât come in through the front door
you: her roomâs right next to it and sheâll freak if she sees you
you: âŚ.. oscar?
you: hello whereâd you go
you: omfg if youâre coming in do NOT say youâre here to see me
you: say itâs delaney or something
âBoo.â His voice, so close to your ear, makes you jump about a foot in the air.Â
âMotherfucker!â you screech, smacking his (annoyingly solid) chest with some real force.Â
He grins and catches your hands in his. âSorry, sorry. That was immature of me.â
âYou think? Howâd you even get in here, you freak?â
âI went back up to my room, then through the window to your balcony. Wasnât as hard as you made it look last time, actually.â The cheeky bastard has the audacity to smirk, and youâd be more upset about it if he didnât look so alive, like this is the most fun heâs had in weeks.
âShut up,â you return weakly, flummoxed for what to say or do now that heâs in your room, broad-shouldered and present in a way you canât escape.
He holds his phone screen up to your face, displaying your last text. âDelaney, really? Câmon, I havenât talked to her in ages.â
You raise an eyebrow. âDonât think you ever did much talking with her, but okay.â Now youâre really in dangerous territory, but you only have yourself to blame. Youâre not even sure why you mentioned her name; itâs petty of you, and unfair in the grand scheme of things.Â
He clears his throat awkwardly. âWell. Anyways. Um, here you go.â He puts his phone away and retrieves your highlighter from his pocket, pressing it into your hand gently; a peace offering.Â
You accept it equally awkwardly. âThanks. It has, uh, glitter. The highlighter, I mean. Thatâs why itâs my favorite.â
He takes the abrupt change of topic in stride, recognizing it as your own form of peace offering. âReally? And it still works?â
âWell⌠here, hold on, Iâll show you.â You turn to grab a piece of scrap paper from your desk, and when you turn back around, you canât suppress a giggle at the way heâs folded himself down neatly on your rug, back straight against the base of your bed and looking at you expectantlyâa polite cat for all intents and purposes.Â
âWhat?â he asks, smiling automatically in response to your unimpeded laughter, even if he doesnât know what itâs about.Â
âNothing, you justâoh my gosh, you look so cute like this.â Your hands squeeze at your sides before you shake them out, as if clearing out the desire to kiss him on the nose.Â
He makes a face at you; half embarrassed, half pleased. âThanks?âÂ
Nope, you still want to kiss him on the nose. But you have more imminent priorities at the moment, so you settle down on the rug next to him and uncap your highlighter with a flourish.Â
âSee,â you begin, drawing a line over the paper, âit works great! And itâs so fun.â You shift the paper slightly so he can see the glitter, then you feel immediately foolish for doing so.Â
He hums noncommittally, but when you turn to him, heâs not making fun of you. Heâs not even paying much attention to the paper; heâs just looking at you. So warm, so familiar, the way he used to do so openly. Your heart lurches at the sight, like the air in your chest has its own turbulence.
âOscar,â you murmur, âyouâre not even looking.â
âSure I am,â he says, gaze steadfast as ever on you.Â
âOkay, what color is my highlighter?â
He doesnât miss a beat. âPink.â
Your nose scrunches. âFine. But youâve had it for weeks, so. New question: whatâd I just highlight?â
Finally, his gaze drops, and you will the rhythm of your heart back into regularity. He squints at the paper, then: âYour handwriting is awful.â
Your mouth drops open. âAre you serious right now? Iâve seen your chicken scratch on my lab reports. Pot, kettle.â
He grins and nudges your shoulder with his. âYeah, yeah, alright. Is this next monthâs sober monitor schedule?â He points to where youâd highlighted a pink, glittery line over a rough table of names and dates.Â
âMmhm. Just trying to get ahead of initiation.â
He sighs. âDonât get me started. I think Iâm gonna have to stay up every night that week in case someone flakes.âÂ
Rightâyou and Oscar are both risk chairs for your Greek organizations this year. It is, like most chair positions, a relatively thankless task. But itâs important: making sure there are at least two people from your sorority signed up to attend every night out sober and keep an eye out for anyone who needs help, keeping track of and enforcing everyoneâs monthly quota of sober monitor duties, arranging the sober monitor schedule to fit with everyoneâs availabilities and commitments, and rinse and repeat.Â
Usually, there are four designated nights out per week, but sorority and fraternity initiation bumps it up. And knowing how crazy it gets, youâre trying to get at least four people on sober monitoring duty for initiation. âIâll probably just put in a bunch of shifts that week myself,â you explain to Oscar. âBut honestly, I try to stay up every night out anyways, in case someone needs me.â
His eyebrows shoot up. âEvery night out?â
You wave him off good-naturedly. âWhy do you think Iâm always so tired in physics? But nah, itâs not that bad. Iâm usually up anyways, to finish work I need to do, and I just keep my phone on in case something happens. Probably a quarter of the girls have gone through sexual assault peer support training with me, which Iâm glad about, but stillâI just want to be available if anyone needs me.â
Oscar shakes his head. âYou donât have to explain yourself to me. I think thatâs really⌠good. Itâs awesomeânot awesome that you have to do it, but, I mean, fuck.â He runs a hand through his hair, flustered but no less earnest for it. âI wish I had a better way of saying it. Youâre doing a great job. And everyone should be doing it, but theyâre not. So if it was going to be anyone doing it, Iâm glad itâs you.âÂ
You shrug, cringing at how his straightforward praise makes you feelâseen too clearly, burnished too golden, like youâre on a pedestal with too far a fall from grace if you misstep. At the same time, youâre so pleased, so grateful to be acknowledged even if itâs for something everyone should be doing, so flattered that he thinks itâs something important, something good. You feel unnervingly transparent; all your selfish desires on display and sated when you only wish to be perceived as untouched by greed.
But his gaze never wavers in its warmth, its unashamed admiration of you. For the first time, you consider the possibility that you could misstep in front of him, and he wouldnât think less of you. For the first time, you wonder if itâs okay to be motivated by selfish desires as well as pure. To be proud of yourself and not just what you put out into the world.Â
âYouâre terrible at taking a compliment, you know,â he murmurs. âAlthough, I think thereâs one youâre more used to⌠what was it again?â He pretends to think for a moment, then snaps his fingers and points at you. âOh yeah, there it isâhey, gorgeous.â
You let out an undignified squeak and forcibly turn his face away from you. âOkay, okay, thatâs enough!âÂ
âWhatâs wrong, gorgeous?â You can feel the smirk in the curve of his jaw.
You release your fingers from his chin and huff, defeated. âIf youâre going to be annoying in my own room, can you at least help me with the sober monitor schedule on your end for the nights weâre supposed to be at your frat?â
Thankfully, he relents. âYeah, of course. Put me in, coach.â
Together, you work on scheduling for your overlapping schedules, and eventually your separate ones. You each contribute knowledge about who you know is more reliable than not, who has a conflict but probably forgot to submit it; unglamorous, tedious work, but somehow more enjoyable with him.Â
You donât even remember falling asleep, but the next morning, you find yourself laying on top of your bedspread, shoes off, and a blanket you usually keep on your couch draped over you. You wake with a half-smile still lingering at your mouth; residual sweetness from last nightâs dreams. The details are just out of your reach now, but you think there was something about paper planes, maybe, and a warmth you could live in.Â
SOPHOMORE YEAR, SECOND SEMESTER
âGeorge Russell, prepare to die!â you announce upon entering the lab.
He barely looks up from his workstation. âYou know, violence at such an hour is so unbecoming of a lady.â
You hover threateningly over his shoulder. âItâs 2pm, which feels like a great hour for violence, if you ask me. And you wouldnât recognize a lady if she fell into your lap.â
George fakes a gasp. âIâm telling Carmen you said that.â
You scoff. âCarmen would be the first to agree with me. She says you only pulled her because of her strange attraction to gangly men. Iâm sure sheâll be sad to hear that you died, but sheâll get over itâother gangly fish in the sea, and so on.â
He finally turns around in his chair to face you, a finger already raised in the air to argue his counterpoint. âOkay, before you resort to violence, I should note that Iâm not the only one on the hook for this.â
âOh, enlighten me, Georgie! Who else out of your merry band of idiots is in on this?â This, being, of course, the singing Valentines your acapella group does every year to raise money for a local charity. This year, youâd been looking forward to the chance to perform one of your own arrangements as part of the repertoire. But then the list of requests got sent out, and you saw a Valentine addressed to Oscar, from George, with your own arrangement as the requested song. Youâre also the soloist on that song, and you know only nefarious forces could have conspired to have you singing a love song directly to Oscar Piastri.
And here come those nefarious forces. âCharles,â George begins, ticking off the names on his fingers, âLando, Alex, and, um, Logan.â
âLogan? What the hell was he thinkingâwhat the hell were any of you thinking?â
âTechnically, Logan advised us against it. But he still contributed, uh, monetarily.â George coughs. âCharles loves love, Lando just thought itâd be funny, and we had to ask Alexâs girlfriend to get us the details on who was singing the solo in each song. I, of course, am doing this because I want the best for my friends, and I think you and Oscar should give each other a real chance.â
Youâre already texting before heâs even finished, pointedly ignoring his last sentence.
you: does feminism mean nothing to you bitches
lily: sorry alex was so sneaky when he asked me about the arrangements i didnât even clock it
you: DID YOU FORGET THAT HEâS A MALE MANIPULATOR
lily: ⌠a little bit yeah
lily: but he offered to pay for a fancy dinner for u + me
callie: wtf not me?
you: do not even get me started with you, brutus
callie: hey itâs not my fault loganâs such a pushover
callie: the other guys asked if heâd chip in to pay for the valentine and he just said yes immediately
you: i need to lose my voice TONIGHT so i donât have to go through with this tomorrow
lily: nooooooo you sound so good in the solo!!!
lily: and itâs for charity
lily: think of the children
you: itâs an alzheimerâs charity
lily: old ppl have children too!!
lily: and caroline would kill you if you âlost your voiceâ the night before
you: god you and alex are perfect for each other
you: manipulator4manipulator
lily: what can i say
lily: iâm a woman in a male-dominated field
callie: now THATâS what i call feminism
âAre you planning our demise?â George asks carefully.
You look up from your phone to glare at him. âIâm witnessing the death of feminism.â
âOooookay. So⌠weâre good?â
âNo, George, we are not good. I better see double the donation from you guys.â
âYes, maâam, of course.â He grins sheepishly. âTruce?â
âOnly because this is for charity. But seriously, you guys are so fucking dumb.â
He nods. âWeâre aware.â
âGood afternoon, good afternoon!â Lewis enters the lab just then, greeting you both with a smile.
George mouths thank god up at the ceiling, and you think, not for the first time, that you are living in some kind of Shakespearean comedy. With a doomed romance, maybe.
Doomed or not, romance is the name of the game the following day: February 14th, which dawns so cold that your teeth chatter instantly upon leaving your dorm. Of course, itâs also a million degrees inside any school building and dry as hell, as college climate control is wont to do. This is where youâd like to place the blame for the heat suffusing over your entire face and down your neck a few hours later, as youâre approaching Oscar and his friends in the library cafĂŠ. But one look at just the back of his head already has your heartbeat ratcheting up, and thereâs no HVAC excuse for that.Â
âChin up,â Lily whispers from beside you.Â
âIâm writing you the most boring alto part imaginable in the next arrangement,â you hiss back.
âOh no, Iâm terrified,â she says dryly.
âOscar? Oscar Piastri?â The president of your acapella group, Caroline, projects her voice into the cafĂŠ with her usual authorityâand volume.
Oscarâs head pops up from where heâd been bent over some graph paper. Next to him, Alex, Lando, and George look positively gleeful, while Logan just looks resigned. At his side, Callie already has her phone out, recording.Â
You groan as loudly as you can without incurring Carolineâs wrath.
âIâm Oscar. Can I⌠help you?â Oscar looks at your group with some apprehension, but he relaxes when he spots you and Lily.
Caroline smiles perfunctorily at him. âGeorge Russell wishes you a Happy Valentineâs Day, Oscar, and,â she glances down at the notes in her phone, âa lifetime of happiness.â
Caroline runs a tight ship; Oscar barely has time to turn to George with a bewildered look before sheâs pushing you in front of the group and cuing everyone else in.
You start the song determined not to look at Oscar, training your gaze at the circulation desk in the distance instead. But as the song progresses, you canât help but meet his eyes, and when you do, thereâs such a tender awe in them that it nearly knocks the breath out of you.Â
Still I wonder why it is
I don't argue like this
With anyone but youÂ
As you go on, youâre transfixed by the flush of color that spreads across his skin and the gentle curve of his mouth. Has he always looked at you like this? Like he canât believe youâre real, like heâs counting his lucky stars just to be able to look at you? Like he could keep you warm with the reverence in his gaze alone? The raw emotion on his face is almost obscene for how honest it is, how unguarded. Youâre struck with the sudden urge to kiss that look off of his face, if only to save yourself from the terrifying intimacy of it.Â
Just like a star across my sky
Just like an angel off the page
You have appeared to my life
Feel like I'll never be the same
Just like a song in my heart
Just like oil on my hands
The song ends on an unresolved chord. So, too, remains the tension between you and Oscar, still looking at each other so intently that everyone else seems to hold their breath.
âWow, you lot sure can sing!â With a whoop, Lando breaks the spell.
Oscar glares instantly at him, while you laugh nervously. âAnything for charity!â you squeak out. âGosh, weâd better get a move on. Places to be, people to deliver singing Valentines to, and so on. Caroline, shall we?â
Thankfully, she nods. âYeah, letâs try not to fall behind schedule. We need to find Max Verstappen next.â
The rest of the day is jam-packed enough with performances that you donât have any time to think about the insane events from the library until youâre lying in bed that night, staring at the ceiling. The memory of the way Oscar had looked at you during the song sits in your stomach like some precursor to a pearl: you want to protect yourself against it, but it transforms into something beautiful the longer you try.Â
God. A frat guy is inspiring poetry in you. The usual sear of embarrassment hits you, but itâs tempered by the memory of how Oscar had looked at you today, and itâs dulled by a whole stream of memories now: Oscar, last week, spotting you in the longest line youâd ever seen at the library cafĂŠ and taking you instead to his favorite bakery in town, whose chocolate croissants are objectively much better and whose existence he jealously gatekeeps; Oscar, a month ago, showing up without fanfare to the 40-hour, semester-long sexual assault peer support training course you help to run; Oscar, last semester, quoting the Road work ahead? video to you every time he wanted to make you laugh after a particularly brutal phone call with your family.
Oscar, and the mosaic of ways he has showed up in every corner of your life for as long as youâve known him. Oscar, who you liked so much you could hardly stand to look at him in broad daylight last year. Oscar, who you still like so much, and really, youâre running out of reasonsâarguments you raise against yourself, in your courtroom of oneâfor keeping up this friends-or-normal-acquaintances charade. That charadeâs been so thin in recent weeks that itâs basically gone, anyways.
Inconveniently, your brain decides to remind you that Oscarâs due to leave immediately at the end of the semester for his study abroad in Australia. If there was ever a time to gather your courage, itâd be soon. Now. If you were ruled by your better angels, you would have done it a long time ago.
Instead, you have mostly been ruled by apprehension and cowardice. Some misguided attempt at self-protection, perhaps, because to be known is to be scared. Scared of all the ugly parts of yourself, scared of laying them out in the open for someone else to pass judgment upon, to be deterred by, to decide that actually, youâre weighed down by too much emotional baggage, scarred by too much sanctimonious self-sabotage.Â
But Oscar has never shied away from your worst demons. Maybe he should have; maybe his self-preservation instincts suck. But he has never backed down, never even flinched, never done anything but hold fast in the waters as the safest ship in the harbor, letting your tumultuous waves break over him.Â
You think you owe him at least some measure of your courage in return. You think you wouldnât be able to stand it if he went halfway around the world, and you never even tried. So thatâs it, then. Time to get in touch with your better angels.Â
PRESENT DAY
At long last, the dredges of summer heat dissipate into your favorite season: fall, with its perfectly crisp, perfectly temperate weather, and kaleidoscope of changing colors. Your balcony remains your favorite spot to work, especially when it gets cooler at night and you get to throw on a sweatshirt and enjoy the specific pleasure of being cozy in a slightly chilly environment.Â
There is, admittedly, another part of your balcony mise-en-scène that youâve been enjoying lately: the Oscar Piastri-shaped conundrum sitting just within your peripheral vision.Â
Ever since youâd told him about your habit of staying up on the scheduled nights out, heâs been joining you at his window every time. You didnât ask him to do it, nor does he make a big deal out of it, but itâs kind of nice to know that someone else is burning the midnight oil with you. Most of the time, he just works quietly at his desk (which youâre pretty sure he pushed closer to the window just to be able to keep you company, and you canât think too hard about that without feeling kind of insane), a comforting addition to the vigil you used to keep alone.
He keeps his window open, screen long gone, and youâll chat about whatever inane things come to mind. Heâll complain when a drink machine in the dining hall breaks and he has to drink coffee straight-up without his usual 50% ratio of hot chocolate, or youâll get excited when the dining hall brings back breakfast for dinner. Heâll admit he doesnât really like weight lifting much, but needs must for rowing, or youâll rant about your new spin instructor who doesnât seem to understand when to change songs (and youâll refrain from confessing your own gratitude for his training regimen). Heâll tell you about a rainbow he saw over the science building, or youâll give him a play-by-play of the most recent inter-sorority drama.Â
Thereâs something about the velvet-soft safety of nighttime that makes it feel more natural to talk to him like thisâto get to know him, almost. Which is absurd, because youâve known him for over three years now. But perhaps this is what you were looking for, back when you were trying to be friends-or-normal-acquaintancesânot the actual presence of a platonic dynamic (because honestly, who were you trying to fool?), but this right here. This sense of simple ease, like you donât have to think about what to say or how youâre coming off.Â
Itâs not like your feelings for him have ever been unpleasant. But back then, it always felt like whatever wildfire that had sparked between you two could flame out into disaster with one wrong exhale, one overeager expulsion of oxygen. How nice, how luxurious, to be able to breathe around him without your nervous system flirting with fight-or-flight. Maybe itâs maturity, a combination of wisdom and time, soothing the volcanic, twin flames of your fears and desires, simmering into something steadier that could burn on and on forever. Maybe itâs the yawning expanse of the futureâgraduation hanging over your head like a guillotine, reminding you that thereâs only so much time left before you may never see him again. Maybe youâre just tired of getting in your own way.
Whatever it is, the sky is cloudless and star-speckled tonight, and youâre feeling a little braver than usual. âHey, can I ask you a question?âÂ
Oscar looks up from his laptop and blinks bleary eyes at you. âWhassup?â he mumbles through a yawn.Â
âYou donât have to answer this if it stresses you out, but like⌠what are your plans for after graduation?â You wince as soon as the words leave your mouth. âNever mind, thatâs obviously a stressful question. And I sound like a nosy relative! Forget I asked.â
He smiles faintly. âNo, itâs okayâIâve got a job lined up in Boston. September start date.â
So you will be able to see him again. A breath you didnât know you were holding escapes you. âNot going back to Australia?â
âNah, Iâm staying here for a good long while, I think. Canât get rid of me that easily, Lady Disdain.â
Your eyes roll automatically at the epithet, but secretly, you like the way it rolls off his tongue. âIâve applied to some schools in Boston, too,â you blurt out. âFor PhDs, I mean. I wonât hear back until the winter, so⌠weâll see.â Your mouth curves into a wry grin. âIâm not that easy to get rid of, either.â
âThank god,â he agrees easily.Â
Too easilyâheat blooms across your cheeks, so you resort to changing the topic abruptly. âHow are the pledges this year?â
Like always, he lets you get away with it. âPretty much the normal kind of guys we get. Mostly international students, athletes, that kind of thing. My little this year is a French dude on the tennis team.â His gaze goes just a bit sharp, just a bit wicked. âBut youâd know all about my littles, wouldnât you?â
Damn, heâs not letting you get away with that. âHow is Franco these days?â you ask. Gun to your head, youâll admit itâyour tone is a little shrill. Poor Franco (second semester transfer student, assigned to be Oscarâs little after heâd returned from his study abroad) had gotten caught in the middle of the cold war between you and Oscar last semester, and you havenât been able to look the guy in the eye ever since.Â
âHeâs doing alright for himself. Donât worry, I donât hold any of your actions against him,â Oscar intones archly.
âOh, câmon, like you were such a saint last semester?â
He opens his mouth like heâs really gearing up to get into it with you, then he sighs and shrugs. âShould we just agree that we were both not on our best behavior last semester? Itâs late, and my brain is too fried to do battle right now, anyways.âÂ
âSpeak for yourself. My brain is always ready to do battle.â And itâs a testament to how far youâve come this year with him that youâre smiling when you say it.Â
He grins lazily back. âDonât I know it. What about you, then? Breathing a sigh of relief now that your LDC is gone?â
âGod, donât even get me startedâshe made my little change her outfit for initiation because it wasnât formal enough, can you believe that? I felt like singing ding, dong, the witch is gone when she left.â
âGuess I wonât have to climb in through your balcony anymore,â he muses.
You stick your middle finger up at him. âIt was one time, and whatâs the point of being an athlete if you canât put it to good use?â Then, thoughtlessly: âBut sure, you can come through the front door next time.â
To his credit, Oscar barely reacts at the prospect of next time. âNah, whatâs the point of being an athlete if I canât put it to good use?âÂ
Itâs unsaid, but thereâs a shift in the air, and you both feel it. Some small acknowledgement of whatever magic is brewing between you, soothing old wounds without even trying; the stars as your witness.Â
SOPHOMORE YEAR, SECOND SEMESTER
Your better angels are probably not hiding out in a frat basement. But youâre done with finals, itâs the last night out of the semester, and you wonât see Oscar after this until next year because of his study abroad, so this is it. Now or never. Come hell or high water. And every other vaguely fatalistic idiom you can think of, because a strange sense of foreboding accompanies you as you migrate closer to the makeshift dance floor where Alex is leaning against the wall, gesturing animatedly to the person youâd come to see.
â... tasted kinda off, but I wasnât gonna say anything with Charles smiling so hopefully at me like that,â Alex explains.
âCharles cooked again?â you ask, inserting yourself into the conversation with forced casualness.
Alex turns to you and nods. âYeah, but we had Yuki supervise him. Hey, you dressed up for the theme!â
You point to the bright pink wig pinned haphazardly to your head. âNothing gets past you, does it?â
Next to Alex, Oscar laughs lightly, looking absurd in an orange wig. âYou look nice,â he offers.
You smile nervously. âNo, I really donât, but I appreciate the sentiment. Can I, um, talk to you?âÂ
âRight, Iâll see myself outta here.â Alex sweeps into half a bow, blue wig almost falling off his head, then winks exaggeratedly at you over his shoulder as he shimmies his way onto the dance floor.Â
âHeâs so subtle, that one,â you remark dryly.
Oscar has straightened to his full height now, posture uncharacteristically rigid. âOf course you can talk to me. Whatâs up?âÂ
âRelax, itâs nothing bad. I mean, I hope itâs not bad. I donât think itâs bad, even though I donât think itâs necessarily good, either⌠itâs just the truth, I guess.â You trail off, fingers twisting into the hem of your dress.
He blinks owlishly at you. âHuh?â
You take a deep breath and square your shoulders. Youâve never believed in half measures, and if youâre going down, youâre going down swinging. âLetâs go somewhere quieter. Thereâs something Iâd like to say to you.â
He nods, and somehow, you end up in Dannyâs room again. âHe should start charging us rent,â Oscar jokes lamely.Â
You ignore him firmly, laser focused on your goal. âIâm gonna tell you something, and I need you to just let me say it all at once, okay?â
Oscar starts to nod, then aborts the motion with a wince. âYes, absolutely, but do you think we could take the wigs off first? Iâd like to give you my full attention, but, yâknow, the wigs are kind of distractingâŚâ
Heâs not even trying to be funny now; really, you can tell heâs 100% sincere about it. But the unexpected question startles a laugh out of you, popping the imaginary balloon of tension youâve been holding onto all night and lightening the pressure in the room by degrees. âYeah, okay, good point.â
Your wigâs been one bobby pin from falling out anyways, so it only takes you a second to get the pins out and shake your fingers through your hair. When you look up, heâs sporting a sheepish expression, hands twitching helplessly at his sides with a handful of bobby pins in each. âMineâs stuck,â he explains. âThereâs a possibility that Lando glued me into it.âÂ
The thought makes you laugh again, and his eyes go soft around the corners watching you giggle. Then you step into his space and start pulling pins out from the back of his head, fingers more nimble than his, and his eyes flutter shut at the sensation.
âYou know you can tell me anything, right?â he begins, eyes still closed. âI mean, I know things have always been a little⌠unconventional between us, but seriously. Weâre kind of friends, arenât we?â
âI donât really want to be, to be honest.â You locate the last pin in his hair and pull it out, triumphant. âDone!â Then, you register what you just said. âOh, fuck. I should give you some context for that.â
âYeah, thatâd be good.â The words come out strangled, his composure shot to hell.Â
âOkay, can you⌠maybe keep your eyes closed?â
His brow furrows. âYouâre not gonna, like, prank me or anything like that, right?â
âWhat? No, why would you think that?â
âI dunno, why else would you ask me to keep my eyes closed?â
âMaybe Iâm trying to kiss youâoh, damn it, you keep derailing me!â
âWhat?â he splutters, eyebrows comically high with his eyes still obediently closed.
You sigh. Of course your speech isnât going as planned; you shouldâve expected as much, what with how easily you and Oscar get caught in these back-and-forths. âOpen your eyes, Oscar.â
He cracks one eye open and teases, gently, âSo, no kissing?â
You roll your eyes to high heaven. âCan you be serious now?â
He opens his eyes properly, regarding you with a steady kind of attention that reignites your nerves. âYeah, of course. What did you want to tell me?â
âKissing might still be on the table,â you begin, only because he gave you that opening. âBut thatâs not why I asked you to keep your eyes closed. I asked because I thought itâd be easier to say this if I didnât have to look you in the eye, but thatâs kind of unfair to you, isnât it? And Iâve been unfair enough to you.â
He makes a confused sound, opening his mouth to say something, maybe to defend you from yourself, but you shake your head and continue on.
âNo, just let me say this. I spent a lot of time running away from you last year, and Iâm sorry about that. It really was me, not you. But you never even got mad at me about it, even though I wanted you to, sometimes. I swear I wasnât trying to see how far I could push you, but you always just⌠let me. So Iâve been unfair to you, and frankly, Iâve been straight-up mean to you, so you probably donât want to hear this, but I⌠caught feelings. For you. Ugh, gross.â You cringe at yourself, then soldier on. âI have a lot of feelings for you. Too much. So much I couldnât even talk about it, or admit it to myself, until, like, very recently. And Iâm telling you now because I feel like you deserve a straight explanation, even if you donât want to hear it.â
A maelstrom of emotions swirl in his eyes, but he doesnât say a single thing. The silence prickles along your skin until you canât take it anymore, pleading, âIâm done now, so you can talk.âÂ
He exhales so hard itâs like a release valve has turned inside him. âYouâve gotta be a special kind of stupid if you think I didnât want to hear that from you.â
âHeyââ
âNo, seriously, everyone knew how I felt about you. All last year, it was, like, the teamâs favorite thing to rib me about.â
âWhatâhuh? How⌠How did you feel about me?â
âI liked you. Thatâs it. I just⌠I simply just liked you. Even when you made me work for it. Especially when you made me work for it.â
Your mouth drops open. âReally?â
He stares at you incredulously. âYeah, of course. Why do you think I kept kissing you back at parties after youâd pretend not to know me the day before?â
âI thought you were just⌠I donât know, horny or whatever.â
âYou thought I was just horny?â He drops his forehead onto yours. âUnbelievable.â
âArenât most college guys?â
âSure, but I think most college guys would find someone else to hook up with after having to introduce themselves to the same girl three times. You really didnât know I liked you?â
You shake your head minutely, feeling him move along with you. âNo? I mean, you never asked me for anything moreâand, fine, I recognize how hard it wouldâve been to ask me for anything. But I donât know, I really just thought you⌠didnât care that much. Like, if I wanted to hook up with you, great. If I didnât, no worries. You were always so⌠nonchalant about it.â
He groans. âI swear, Iâm gonna let you scan my brain in your lab just so you can understand whatâs going on in my head, because clearly words arenât doing it. Or actions.â
âThanks? Thatâs kind of romantic, I guess. Not really how my lab works, but whateverââ
He interrupts you forcefully. âIâm not. Iâm not whatever slick, nonchalant douchebag you made me up to be in your head last year. I got nervous around you, okay? Pretty girl wanted to kiss meâno way I was gonna say no. But you were so hot and cold all the time, and it was all I could do to keep up. Didnât wanna scare you off. But I cared so much it made me stupid. I still do. And I still get nervous around you.â
Your heart thuds in your ears, hope rising in you like a tidal wave. But you canât help yourself: âStill? D1 athlete, big, bad frat boy?â
He rolls his eyes and brings his hands up to your waist, squeezing like a warning. âCome off it, gorgeous. If anything, youâre way cooler than me. I just hide behind the varsity jacket.â
Suddenly, like a veil has been lifted from your eyes, you see it. Oscar, know-it-all nerd making it into the proverbial boyâs club because he happens to be fast in a boat; Oscar, always too straightforward and sincere for innuendo but playing along when he knows itâs expected of him; Oscar, holding his heart behind his teeth for fear of coming on too strong.
Youâd go back in time and kick yourself if you could; youâve been so blind, so caught up in your own head, spinning versions of reality to protect yourself from the bracing truth of it: he liked you, he always liked you, and you could test his patience a million times (and you probably got close), but heâd always come back for more. For you.
âAnd do you still like me?â you ask, breathless with possibility. âDo you like me now?â
His mouth quirks at the corners, resigned and a little self-deprecating. âDâya even have to ask?â
Well, sure, you can feel how much he likes you, pressed against your hip. But you really, really need to hear it.
And he seems to understand why youâd asked, because he doesnât make you ask again. âYeah, I like you now. I liked you back then, and I like you now, and I probably never stopped, even when you wanted to be friends, or normal acquaintances.â
You groan at the reminder of that stupid phrase. âWho said that? That wasnât me.â
He huffs out a laugh, half exasperation, half wonder, but he doesnât say anything else. For a long moment, you just breathe together, letting electricity build up in the air between you.
You speak up first. âMy timing is kind of horrible, isnât it?â
He answers without hesitation. âYes.â
âOkay, you didnât have to agree so quicklyââ
âIâm leaving tomorrow morning. I wonât see you until January, and you want me to pretend like it isnât going to kill me, knowing I have to wait that long to kiss you again?â
You balk and take his words in the wrong direction. âWell, Iâm not expecting you to, like, wait for me or anything, obviously, I mean, I donât even know what youâve got going on in Australia, and Iâm sure you have better things to do than sit around pining for meââ
âBeen doing that for ages, gorgeous.â
ââeven though, to be honest, Iâll probably be pining for you, a little bit.â You cringe again. âUgh, I hate saying shit like that, butâŚ. Iâm trying to be more obvious about it. Liking you, I mean. So you donât have to guess anymore.â
Hearing you say it again makes him smile helplessly at you, pink suffusing across his cheeks like a sunrise, and that makes the discomfort still buzzing underneath your skin, so, so worth it.Â
âSo, maybe you could reward me,â you murmur, a little coy now. âFor trying. Like⌠you could kiss me once? Before you leave?â
He lets out a disbelieving laugh, eyes dark like youâve never seen before. âI havenât been able to get my mouth on you for a year, and Iâm not gonna see you again for six months. Kiss you once? Are you insane?â And suddenly, heâs everywhere, hands running up your sides, mouth a flurry of movement between your chest, your neck, your jaw, panting words into your skin like he canât be bothered to breathe if it means leaving you for even a second. âYou make me feel crazy, literally out of my mind for how much I want you, okay? Donât tell me you donât expect me to waitâwhat do you think Iâve been doing all year? Now youâre going to have to wait, and Iâd be sorry about it, but fairâs fair. Leave your schedule empty for a whole week when I get back, though. Donât even think about leaving my bed.âÂ
He ends his heart-stopping spiel by finally, finally kissing you, tongue instantly licking into you with a fervor that makes you whimper straight into his mouth. Itâs just as well that you canât talk like this, because thereâs nothing intelligible in your mind right now, just heat and pressure and the slick slide of his mouth against yours. Falling back into old patterns is easy, and so is unraveling each other without care to where you are or what might come tomorrow. Itâs only when you nearly pull him towards the bed in the room that you remember yourself, and then you have to tear yourself away with a heaving gasp.Â
He chases after you on instinct, muttering, âToo far,â right against your sternum where he sinks his teeth in and bites, reveling in the yelp you let out. Reveling even more in the whine that follows.Â
âWe shouldâwe should really leave,â you insist through a moan. âThis is⌠Dannyâs room? And I donât wanna disrespect himâoh god, Oscar, please.â The sudden pressure of his knee between your legs is too much and not enough all at once.
âWeâll send him a fruit basket, or something. Itâll be fine.â Heâs just mumbling nonsense now, charting a path with his tongue from your collarbone, up your neck, and over your ear.
âN-No, who even does that in this day and age?â Your breath comes in shallow bursts, but you still have the wherewithal to quip, âWeirdo.â
Oscar only pulls back far enough to nudge your nose with his. âOkay, genius, where should we go, then? My stuff is all packed, and I was supposed to stay in Charlesâs room tonight, but he still has a paper to finish, so we canât reallyââ
âMy room. I have a single this year, and if I didnât, Iâd probably kick my roommate out, even though thatâs awful, but I want you so muchââ
He groans so loud it reverberates in your chest. âKeep talking like that, and letâs go, letâs go right now.â
It takes a while to get back to your dorm, because you keep stopping to kiss him, and he keeps stopping because, well:
âI can get myself off any time, but if I canât touch you until January, Iâm gonna need something to remember you by, yeah?â
So you stop in the stacks at the library, and he murmurs a steady stream of mind-numbing filth into your ear with his fingers inside you, and you stop at a bench underneath the massive tree in the middle of the quad, and he sits down and helps you work your hips against his thigh until youâre shaking apart, and you stop in the new science building, sneaking in under some construction tape and happening upon the new research labs, which almost distracts you before youâre bent over a workstation, breath fogging up a stack of safety goggles.Â
By the time you finally get into your room, youâre boneless and loose with affection in his lap, gasping his name into his mouth.
âHow did you get so good at this?â you marvel out loud, in between kisses.Â
He smiles indulgently at you, hair a wreck and flushed everywhere you can see. âLearned all my best tricks from you, gorgeous.â
Your whole body shivers against him, undone as always by the way that particular word drips out of his mouth. And maybe youâre shivering about something else, too, something more reverent and true: the fact that you really did learn everything together, fumbling in the dark last year, not really knowing what to do except that you wanted to please each other, make it good for each other. There had been times when it was awkward, and times when it simply didnât work, but it helped that you were both a little competitive about learning moreâand fasterâabout what made the other tick. Thinking about it now makes you want to cry a little bit, because you should have known all along what he felt for you, what you felt for him. How else to explain such clumsy devotion, shaking through eager hands, committing every sound and jolt of sensation to memory so youâd know better what to do the next time? How else to explain such sweet care, such absolute safety?
His lips press gently against the corner of your eye now, whisper-soft against a tear you hadnât even noticed had leaked out. âWhatâs wrong, sweet girl?â
Uh-oh. The new phrase sends your hips firmly down against his, even as you cry a little more. âNothing, I just⌠Youâre so nice to me, and youâve always been so nice to me, and⌠and, oh no, I like you so much, and youâre going away for six months, and my timing sucks, and I think Iâm gonna die if you donât fuck me soon, like, really, really soonââ
He bursts out laughing, high-pitched and delighted. âBaby, baby, baby,â he croons, swiping your tears away with a thumb while he shakes with hiccups of laughter. âYouâre the sweetest thing in the whole world, and if you thought I was nice to you before, youâre not gonna believe how nice I can be now that I know you like me so much, now that youâre crying for itâgod, I canât believe youâre real, and youâd be mine if I asked.â He speaks the last words around his thumb, sucking away the salt from your eyes.
âGross,â you mumble hoarsely, not really meaning it and just needing something to say.
âPretty sure weâve shared worse bodily fluids than this,â he says, offhanded.Â
âOh, seriously, Oscar, gross.â Suddenly, youâre mortified, slapping your hands over his face so that he canât watch you squirm.
He grins, entirely unrepentant. âOops, did I ruin the mood?â
âDid I ruin the mood,â you mock back at him, pressing your hips harder into his, heat layering into heat. âObviously not, you idiot.â
He removes your hands from his face and looks at you with a new kind of seriousness. âIâll ask when I get back. Iâll do it right.â
You laugh nervously. âAsk what?â
For once (for forever, you hope), he doesnât let you run from this. âIf youâd be mine. You know Iâve been yours since the beginning, right?âÂ
Now you slap your hands over your own face, whining into your palms. âShut up. No. Yes. I guess. Maybe. I donât know. Whatever!â
He kisses the back of your hands. âYouâll know. Iâll make sure of it.â
You let your hands fall to his chest, defeated and petulant in equal measure. âAll these promises, and you still havenât fucked me yet.â
âOnly âcause I know you like it when I make you wait, baby.â He smirks and anchors you more firmly in his lap. âBut donât worry, Iâll get you where you need to go.â
And he doesâhe always has, he always does, he always will. The hours you spend together on that last night are so perfect that all of your later resentment never touches them, never warps them into anything other than a snow globe memento of burgeoning adoration, frozen in a time when you thought your future together looked boundless.
But the next morning, when you text him, he doesnât text back. And thatâs fine, because heâs on a plane, and you hadnât expected him to text back. You text again the next day, still without response, and the day after that, and youâre not trying to jump to conclusions, but you can feel yourself wilting with uncertainty. Maybe he hadnât meant all the things heâd said and promised; maybe it was just a fun night before a long journey.Â
You text again the next week, having transitioned to petty anger at that point. Not that thatâs much help against the humiliating shock of seeing your message go unmistakably green, a sore thumb in a sea of previously blue-and-gray texts.
So thatâs it, then. Heâs blocked you, without so much as a sorry, itâs me, not you.
You text him one final time the week after, cold fury in a simple message. Still no response, still green texts. The last tendril of hope within you dies out like that, doused by an uncaring iMessage interface.

author note: I don't really know how to comment on this storyâI just wrote it for fun 𼰠If you like it, I'll be really happy âşď¸ Have a great weekend 𧥠Oh, and I'd like to emphasize that I LOVE OSCAR SO MUCH â¤ď¸âđĽ
Oscar leaned over the table, bracing his hands against it. He was staring intently at the tablet while talking to Amir on the phone. Your gaze, which you had accidentally shifted to your boyfriend, slid over his half-bent figure. His strong legs were clearly visible from under the shorts, which had ridden up on his right thigh and lifted, because of the way he was leaning over the table. His hips and ass were tilted slightly back, and you simply couldnât help but linger on them with your attentive stare.
His narrow waist was hugged by a black T-shirt that somehow made him look sexy, even though he wore that T-shirt at home all the time and it had never produced this effect before. His arms were tensed from the way he was transferring part of his body weight onto them. The veins that webbed across his arms were a particular weakness of yours, but again, right now they sent a wave of light arousal through you. Oscar unexpectedly straightened up and headed for the window, still focused on the conversation with his race engineer, but you realized you were devouring your boyfriend with your eyes.
Oscar wasnât trying to seduce you. He was simply working, yet the image of him serious, carefully studying important little details, was damn attractive. Maybe on any other day you wouldnât have reacted this way, but the peak of your ovulation made you feel hungry for the ordinary, routine image of your boyfriend.
You forced yourself to look back at the movie you and Oscar had decided to watch ten minutes ago, but your eyes traitorously kept returning to the man who was pacing near the window.
You felt that you wanted sex. But you couldnât just say it outright. Like, how would that lookâOscar finishes the call, sits down next to you, and you go âI want sex, letâs go to the bedroomâ or what?
No. You would never have said something like that out loud because you had never been the one to initiate sex. Well, actually you had, but Oscar didnât know about it. When you wanted sex, all you needed to do was drop the right hint that Oscar would read as a coincidence that turned him on, and in those moments you were never against it.
You took a deep breath, trying to focus on the TV screen where the actors were unsuccessfully trying to play out a drama. But it no longer held any interest.
Oscarâs low, slightly velvety voice, sounding calm and confident in the room, made you think of him in the most indecent way. Obsessive thoughts instantly appeared in your head about how to provoke him into sex once again.
âYes, Amir, got it. Send me that data, Iâll look it over again in the morning. Thanks, talk later,â Oscar finally ended the call, exhaled, and ran a palm over his face, rubbing away the light fatigue.
He turned to you. His dark eyes, focused and cold just a second ago, instantly softened when they met yours.
âSorry,â he moved toward the couch, and his walk was relaxed, yet every movement still carried that hidden athletic strength. âIt was urgent.â
âItâs fine,â you said with a smile, waiting for his closeness. Oscar sank down next to you, stretching out an arm to hug you around the shoulders out of habit. His body radiated pleasant warmth, and the familiar cozy scent of his skin made your pulse jump even higher.
Red lights were flashing in your head, telling you that you would only calm down once Oscar fucked you. So you began your attempt to get what you wanted. You shifted closer and rested your head on his chest, while your palm, as if by accident, landed on his thighâright where the fabric of the shorts was still slightly ridden up. Your fingers felt the dense, tensed muscle.
You didnât see how his gaze immediately dropped to your hand on his thigh. He didnât react at all and just continued quietly watching the movie.
You stayed in that position for several long minutes. Your eyes fell to his crotch, and you couldnât fully admit to yourself how badly you wanted to touch him right there. You shifted almost imperceptibly, holding yourself back with all your strength, then lifted your head to him and started a casual conversation.
âDid you call your mom back? You said youâd do it when you got back from your evening run.â
You moved your palm a few centimeters higher, pretending it was just more comfortable to sit that way. Oscar looked indifferent to where your hand was resting and answered softly:
âRight⌠I completely forgot. Momâs probably already asleep, Iâll call her tomorrow,â he replied with guilt in his voice. You only hummed and turned back to the TV. Several more minutes passed, and to your surprise Oscar still wasnât reacting to your, well, not-at-all-subtle attempt to make him at least think about sex.
You watched that movie, and you were itching to drop a clearer hint. Because the sight of the stretched fabric on his thighs, right where his cock was, was literally waving in front of your eyes like a damn red flag.
You pretended you needed to scratch your nose, which of course wasnât itchy, but the plan was that when you lifted the hand that had been resting on his thigh, you would brush against his groin. You felt Oscar turn his head downward, but he stayed silent. His thighs tensed, and you noticed it. It had worked.
A moment later your hand returned to its previous place, but Oscar still didnât react. You looked at his thighs again and started to get irritated that he wasnât doing anything. Usually Oscar would already have joked or simply started the tenderness that would have turned into a kiss, but for some reason today he was ignoring such obvious hints. You heard him only inhale more deeply, and you could literally feel with your skin how his entire body tensed. Oscar cleared his throat and you lifted your face to him.
In his eyes you finally saw a playful spark, and his lips parted, about to say something like a teasing question.
You held your breath, preparing to put on the purest look of surprise in the world, but at that exact second the screen of his smartphone on the coffee table flared with bright light, and a insistent ringtone burst from the speaker.
Oscar twisted around toward the phone, and that heated fog that had only just started to thicken between you instantly scattered. He looked at the screen, then back at youâalready with a guilty and slightly sheepish smile. Nicoleâs photo was lighting up the display.
âAh, so sheâs not asleep after all,â Oscar said with a light smile, reaching for the phone. âI have to answer, or sheâll definitely give me a half-hour lecture about what a careless son I am.â
You smiled, releasing Oscar from the desired embrace. He swiped his finger across the screen and brought the phone to his ear:
âHi, Mom. No-no, I wasnât sleeping, everythingâs fine⌠sorry I didnât call backâŚâ
You half-closed your eyes, leaning back against the couch.
Seriously? Right now?
This was a complete defeat of the current round.
Nicole, as always, had a million pieces of news and just as many questions. His motherâs voice, loud and energetic even through the speaker, filled the room. Oscar stood up from the couch againâhe had that relentless habit of walking during phone conversationsâand slowly paced toward the kitchen, answering her questions on the move and passing hello from her to you.
Your intention finally died under the monotonous: âYes, Mom⌠No, I ate⌠no, everythingâs fine, weâre just watching a movie.â
Your failed attempt was still burning inside you in hot waves. Today you didnât get what you wanted, because the conversation lasted twenty minutes. Nicole Piastri knew how to talk for a long time, especially when she got to family gossip or discussing his upcoming race weekend. And considering that mother and Oscar hadnât spoken for several days, there was plenty to talk about. She even managed to speak with you.
While you were talking to Nicole, Oscar went to take a shower. And when you came to the bedroom after your own bathroom routine, your boyfriend was already peacefully snoring, exhausted from the day.
The next day you tried again. If the subtle hints in the living room had been shattered by Nicoleâs call, today you decided to change strategy and act a little more provocatively.
Putting on short shorts and a thin-strapped tank top seemed almost justified because it was hot outside, but the way you behaved in that outfit couldnât possibly fail. Oscar wouldnât be able to ignore your bare legs all day. Yet your ovulation and fate had completely different plans.
Almost the entire day Oscar spent working: first he spent hours turning laps on the simulator, completely immersed in the virtual track, then he went out for an exhausting hour-long run under the scorching sun, and when he returned and washed the sweat off, his attention was fully claimed by the general Formula 1 driversâ chat, where some heated argument had broken out about the latest regulation changes. He typed long replies while commenting out loud on inappropriate remarks from Sainz or Colapinto, and it seemed he was looking right through you.
Your short tank top and exposed thighs existed in his field of vision completely in vain.
Even already in the bedroom, when you finally lay down, you tried to lie closer, pressing your thighs against his crotch. Oscar hugged you on autopilot, mumbled something affectionate and half-asleep⌠and fell asleep a minute and a half later, drained by the simulator and the run.
Your frustration was already starting to turn into genuine sporting excitement.
On the second day this supposed âinvisibilityâ continued. Oscar kept getting distracted by something: a call from his manager, checking analytics, some household trifles, completely failing to notice your languid looks and calculated movements. You tried several more small seductive maneuvers again, but he reacted with some unbearable, innocent indifference. It was already starting to raise a wave of light irritation inside you.
How much longer?
You were on the verge of simply telling him to do it with you, but another call interrupted you. You were tired of playing this game and, disappointed in your seductive talents, you gave up.
In the evening, after a hot shower, you finally decided to abandon any attempts to seduce your busy boyfriend.
âEnoughâ, you thought, rubbing the steamed skin with a towel. Your body was still burning and demanding attention, but pride won out.
You dropped the robe, pulled a thin, loose white T-shirt over your naked body and soft pajama pants. No longer trying to play the role of Miss Seductress, you went out into the living room to join him watching TV.
Oscar was sitting on the couch watching some sports show, relaxed after a long day. He was stretched out on the couch, holding his phone and listening with interest to the male voices on the television. You settled on the couch next to Oscar, asking what he was watching. He tossed out that it was analysis of the latest cricket match, and you lost interest. You didnât understand that game. Staring at the screen of your own phone, you started scrolling through the latest Instagram updates. You werenât trying to attract his attention. You were simply sitting next to him.
And it was exactly at that moment, when you were completely ordinary and domestic, that Oscar suddenly turned his gaze on you.
The thin cotton fabric of the T-shirt softly hugged your breasts, and without a bra your nipples clearly and distinctly outlined under the material. Oscar latched onto that with his eyes. His Adamâs apple bobbed.
âIâll go get us some fruit,â you said, lowering your feet to the floor. You stood up from the couch, still not suspecting the change in his mood.
You went to the kitchen, and Oscar couldnât tear his eyes away. His gaze followed you. The pajama pants, though soft and simple, hugged your ass so seductively and naturally, emphasizing with smooth movements every step you took, that something finally switched in the racing driverâs head.
When you returned from the kitchen holding a plate of sliced juicy fruit, Oscarâs eyes didnât leave you for a second. You approached the coffee table in front of the couch and bent down to set the plate down. The T-shirt hung forward, revealing a deep neckline from above and a view of your breasts, while the pajama pants stretched over your hips. So Oscar saw no reason to hold back.
Before you could walk past, his palm slid between your thighs, a little above the knees, forcing you to stop. You felt the impulse you tried to ignore. Your hypersensitivity at the peak of ovulation made you react that way.
âWhatâŚ?â you didnât finish, because the next moment Oscarâs strong palms were already on your hips. Your squeak bounced off the living-room walls when he pulled you toward him with a smooth but confident motion.
The world flipped, and a second later you found yourself straddling him, bracing your hands on his chest. His strong arms firmly fixed you by the waist, pulling you flush against his tensed body.
âAre you doing this on purpose?â Oscar murmured against your lips, his voice low and his breathing heavy, while his fingers dug forcefully into the soft fabric of your thighs, leaving you no chance of escape.
âDoing what?â you asked in surprise, not understanding his question. âI brought fruitâŚâ
One of his palms, which a moment ago had been on your thighs, slipped under the pants and squeezed your firm ass, while his lips burned your own with hot, aroused breath a millimeter away.
âYour nipples are so clearly visible through this fucking T-shirtâisnât that a hint for me?â he asked. Your eyes widened for a fraction of a second and you wanted to laugh at the absurdity of the situation. Exactly at the moment when you had abandoned all attempts to seduce him and simply put on ordinary home clothes, he suddenly read it as a hint for sex?
It was the most ridiculous, yet at the same time the sweetest irony of the last few days. You had tried to put on a whole performance with short shorts, innocent touches and refined posesâand he had been blind as a mole. But the moment you simply pulled on the first available home T-shirt, accepted defeat and went for applesâthe celebrated analytical mind of Oscar Piastri completely short-circuited.
A light, uncontrollable little laugh still escaped your chest, spilling right against his lips.
âNo, you silly, this is just an ordinary T-shirt I sleep in,â you said, your voice full of flirtation. You frantically felt how his cock was pressing against your pubic bone and only now realized that you were already wet.
âBut why do I feel like you put it on today not just by chance?â he asked, and his low voice, full of arousal, echoed as a vibration in your chest.
âRight now I put it on exactly by chance,â you answered with a hint of reproach. âI spent two days spinning around in front of you in the shortest shorts, groping you on the couch, pressing against you in bedâand you just slept or were busy. And now when I put on home clothes and wasnât hinting at anything, you accuse me of provocation?!â
Oscar froze for a second. A whole range of emotions flashed across his face: from slight surprise to realization of the full picture, and then the corners of his lips twitched into a crooked, incredibly self-satisfied smile.
âSo⌠there were hints?â his voice sounded even lower, with a light teasing rasp. âAnd I thought those short shorts were on you just because it was hot.â
His palm under the pajama pants massaged your ass, forcing you to involuntarily rock forward and press even tighter against his tensed crotch. The expression on his face instantly changed from mocking to dark.
âWell⌠sorry I was busy,â he whispered, covering your neck with his lips right next to the pulsing vein, which made your breath catch. âNow Iâm completely free.â
Oscar turned you, and you lay on your side, still pressed by his heavy body. His other hand, which had been holding you by the waist, slid upward under the thin cotton, fingers covering your swollen, sensitive breasts. You sucked in a sharp breath when his thumb roughly and confidently smeared across your nipple, finally destroying the last remnants of your pride and feigned laughter. His soft lips left wet trails along your neck and now you felt that you were finally going to get what you wanted. It made you even wetter.
âOscarâŚâ you exhaled, threading your fingers into his thick, slightly tousled hair at the nape of his neck.
âWhat, honey?â he pulled away from your neck and looked up at you from below, breathing heavily. His dark gaze was hungry, hot and absolute. âYou wanted this, right? So letâs make up for these last two days.â
He fully rolled you onto your back and successfully settled between your spread legs. His lips found yours in a matter of seconds and his tongue eagerly invaded your mouth. Your tongues clashed for dominance and you were so happy to feel what you had been craving for two damn days that you easily let him take the lead. The wet, deep kiss was accompanied by light thrusts of Oscarâs hips. He was trying to create the necessary friction that would ease the sweet ache between your legs.
He tore away from your lips and moved lower, scorching the sensitive skin of your neck and collarbones with hot, wet kisses. His rough palms grabbed the hem of your thin white T-shirt and yanked it upward, exposing your breasts. Oscar froze for a moment, greedily sucking in air when his eyes met your half-naked body.
His palm covered one breast, squeezing the soft flesh and rubbing the hard nipple with his thumb while his lips already found the other. Oscar was devouring you: he gently nipped the nipple, licked it with his hot tongue and sucked so deeply that you involuntarily arched your back, loudly and raggedly sucking in air and burying your fingers in his hair.
Without giving you a moment to recover, he began slowly descending with kisses. His lips traveled a path along your ribs, across your tensed stomach, leaving wet traces right near your navel. With every breath of his, your body trembled with unbearable anticipation.
Oscar grabbed the waistband of your pajama pants together with your ordinary cotton panties and with a confident, hurried motion pulled them down over your strong legs, leaving you completely naked. He spread your thighs apart and, without wasting a second, buried his face right between them.
His breath scorched your folds. And a moment later the tongue that touched you made your head fall heavily back onto the couch. You moaned loudly, digging your fingers into the upholstery. Oscar was caressing you so well that everything inside clenched into a knot within seconds. He was drinking your wetness, working his tongue skillfully until bright stars truly floated before your eyes. From the hypersensitivity and the desire that had been building too long over these days of waiting, the first blinding orgasm crashed over you in a powerful wave, making your thighs tremble finely and press toward him.
âYouâre so quick today,â came from between your legs. You could barely lift your head to see your boyfriendâs satisfied face, feeling the sweet wave of orgasm subside. Oscar climbed back up your body and covered your lips again with a deep, insatiable kiss, letting you taste yourself on his mouth.
âSo incredibly delicious,â he said breathlessly against your lips, looking into your hazy eyes. You smiled, seeing the pleasure in his eyes and being happy that you were the reason for it.
Oscar rose to his feet without taking his hot, hungry gaze off you. In one motion he pulled off his T-shirt, exposing his sculpted shoulders and broad chest, then shoved down his shorts together with his underwear. While he was undressing, his eyes slowly, obscenely scanned your pose: your tousled hair, breasts rising high with your breathing, bare thighs and flushed, happy face after the first explosion of pleasure.
Oscar finally lowered himself again and slowly, with special care, settled between your spread legs. He guided his hard, aroused cock to your flesh that was ready to take him and began entering millimeter by millimeter. You drew in a long breath, feeling the incredible fullness.
He was in no hurry to break into a crazy pace. Oscar gave you slow, deep pleasure, fully controlling every movement. He moved inside you with long strokes while simultaneously giving attention to every centimeter of your body: his palms forcefully squeezed your thighs, leaving red marks, his fingers caressed and kneaded your nipples, and his lips constantly found yoursâsometimes for tender, sometimes for wild, demanding kisses. He latched onto your neck with his lips, probably leaving hickeys there that drove you crazy.
When the rhythm started to accelerate again, Oscar suddenly stopped, breathing heavily. Several beads of sweat had already appeared on his forehead, and his cheeks were sweetly flushed. But that look only made you more aroused.
Oscar scooped you up under the ass, sank deeper and confidently sat down on the couch, settling you on top of his lap.
You found yourself right on him, fully impaled on his hard cock.
âRide me, baby,â he ordered softly. Oscar dug his palms into your ass and gently pushed you up and down.
You clutched his shoulders with your hands and made the first movement that sent the pleasant sensation of fullness all the way to your fingertips.
From that position and the incredible depth of penetration, control finally disappeared. You started moving on him, moaning loudly while Oscar greedily kissed your breasts, squeezed your thighs and helped you with his powerful thrusts from below.
The movements became faster, harder and more uncompromising. With every motion your voice grew louder, and Oscarâs groans added heat. It was incredibly good. It was absolutely worth those two days of useless waiting.
From the sweet torment and frantic friction you could no longer hold back and were literally screaming through the room, and the second, even more devastating orgasm crashed over both of you, making you clench around his cock with the convulsive movements of your inner muscles.
Oscar groaned dully, feeling your walls squeeze him, sucking out the last drops of self-control, and he sharply thrust his hips upward, burying himself to the hilt. The hot wave of his orgasm burst inside youâin powerful thrustsâand you felt the warmth spreading deep, mixing with your wetness.
You were still trembling, breathing heavily, pressing your forehead to his shoulder. Your body refused to obey, your legs shook, and your heart was pounding somewhere in your throat. Oscar didnât let go. His hands slowly, almost tenderly, slid up your back under the T-shirt, pulling you closer while you both tried to catch your breath.
âFuckâŚâ he exhaled hoarsely into your hair. You laughed quietly, still feeling him pulse inside you. âAre you okay?â
âOhhh yeah⌠You outdid yourself today, love. Iâm damn satisfied. Although this could have happened earlier if you hadnât been so busy,â you said with intermittent breathing, lifting your head. His cheeks were even more flushed, his lips swollen, and his eyes dark and satisfied.
Oscar snorted, but a smile played at the corners of his mouth. He carefully lifted you, sliding out of you, and felt his come slowly trickle down the inner side of your thigh.
You thought that was the end and you had both gotten what you wanted, but your boyfriend had other plans for you. He must have decided that since you had waited so many days, two orgasms wouldnât be enough for you.
You squeaked in surprise, wrapping your arms around his neck when he carried you through the living room straight to the bedroom. The T-shirt was still on you, but as soon as you were on the bed it was done for and ended up on the floor.
He stood near the edge of the bed, completely naked, his cock wet with your mixture and already starting to harden again. His gaze slid over you from top to bottomâover the tousled hair, the marks of his lips on your neck, the glistening wet skin between your legs.
âSpread your legs,â he ordered low. âWider.â
You slowly obeyed, feeling the hot excitement rise again. Oscar leaned over you, bracing on one arm, still standing on the floor. His fingers found your entrance that was burning after the recent penetration and slid insideâtwo at onceâand began moving in that same slow, deep rhythm with which he had just fucked you. His thumb pressed on your clit, circling, and within a few minutes you were on the edge again. But every time you started to clench, Oscar stopped.
âDonât come,â he said quietly, and that commanding tone was so sexy. âHold on a little.â
You moaned in frustration, thrusting your hips toward him.
âSadist⌠youâre the one who ignored me for several daysâŚâ you groaned with reproach.
âI have to make up for what I missed. And Iâm serious,â he said, driving his fingers into you while hovering above. His heavy cock was hard again to the limit and brushing against your thigh.
Without letting you come, after several long, torturous minutes he flipped you onto your stomach. He scooped you up under the hips, lifting your ass, and entered again with a long, deep thrust. You buried your face in the pillow, moaning into the fabric as he began to move. This time faster. Harder. His hips slapped against yours, his palm squeezed your ass, spreading it so he could go even deeper.
âJust like thatâŚâ he exhaled heavily. âThis is exactly what you wanted for two days. Right?â
You could only moan loudly to confirm his words, and taking that as your positive answer, he sped up. Every thrust knocked the air out of you; every time he bottomed out you felt him hit that spot inside that made your eyes roll back. His palm found your breasts, squeezing firmly, then that same hand slid between your legs and found your clit. The combination of his incredibly gentle movements on your clit and the strong thrusts inside you brought you to a third orgasm. Unable to hold back, you screamed into the pillow, clenching around him so tightly that Oscar exhaled sharply and thrust roughly a few more times before coming deep inside you again.
Absolute silence filled the room, broken only by your heavy breathing. It had been a whole marathon that ended successfully for both of you. Still inside you, Oscar covered you with his body. His lips found your ear.
âI fixed my fuck-up.â
You laughed quietly into the pillow, still trembling under him, feeling him slowly pulse inside while his come mixed with your wetness.
âYou think?â you whispered hoarsely, turning your head to catch his gaze. Oscar raised an eyebrow with an ironic expression appeared on his face. You waited a moment and then laughed, âI have to admit that it exceeded all my expectations.â You kissed him and said âSo yeah, you fixed this fuck-up,â
Oscar smiled into your ear satisfied, with crooked smile. He carefully pulled out of you; both of you were a complete mess. He rolled you onto your back and lay down next to you, embracing you.
His fingers gently brushed a damp strand from your forehead.
âNext time you can just say it instead of dropping hints,â he remarked softly. You felt embarrassed.
âOkay, love. If I want sex Iâll tell you straight, no matter what youâre doing. But Iâm warning youâI donât care what youâll do,â you wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him closer, kissing him without hurry.
âI agree. Even if Iâm in the simulator or Zak calls, Iâll drop everything.â
You settled your head on his chest, listening to his heart gradually calm down. His fingers slowly stroked your back. Outside the window it was already dark, and the TV in the living room was still quietly murmuring about cricket. You closed your eyes, feeling the tiredness settle over you. Oscar kissed the top of your head, your temple, your shoulderâsmall, full tenderness kisses that no longer demanded anything, only gave peace.
âI love you,â he said quietly into your hair.
You smiled, pressing closer to him.
â I love you too. Even if youâre blind as a mole.â
He snorted quietly and hugged you even tighter. A few minutes later his breathing evened out, and the hand that had been stroking your back stilled. You lay there a little longer, listening to his heartbeat, feeling the warmth of his body and that deep, sated satisfaction that had finally come after two days of hunger.
