As my first year of university in Cardiff ended my course leaders suggested enquiring about work experience with a local newspaper in my hometown whilst I was back for the summer.
Before I moved to uni I had been featured in The Tameside Reporter which covers my area, so I enquired with them. Myself and the Reporter go back a long time to my teenage years before I was studying photography. I used to take photos on my phone when I went on various hikes and walks around Tameside and a few friends told me to send them into the paper, which had a local photography section at the time. They used my photos and then a family acquaintance donated her old bridge camera to me after sheâd seen my photos in the paper and decided it would be better off in my hands rather than collecting dust in her house.
With the added confidence I was given by the Canon Powershot camera I made photography my main hobby and the Reporter did a piece on me and my newly gifted camera. Over the next 3 years, I would go through my NCFE Level 1 course at night school and BTEC level 3 extended diploma in college. During that time various shots of mine were published in the paper as I shot local sports and events to hone my skills. I made a couple of contacts in that time who I followed on social media. I messaged sports editor Mark who kindly put me in touch with editor Nigel who said the paper would be more than happy to give me some opportunities in photography whilst Iâm back in the area for July.
I went down to the headquarters for a chat which was a success. Mark needed photos of Droyslden FC and Stalybridge Celtic FC (my hometown club) playing in their preseason. He also welcomed cricket shots if I could get any and coming the following Sunday was the Mossley 10K run which he wanted a photo for as it would make the back page of the next edition of the newspaper. Nigel said heâd send me jobs in a list and that list started with a photos request for a big feature in the Reporterâs sister paper The Glossop Chronicle which covers that area of Derbyshire next door to Tameside.

Students and professionals complete a Blue Light Exercise at Glyntaff with a mock car crash
A major car crash is a terrifying thing to imagine, but for the professionals out there who deal with these incidents, it is a regular part of their life.
It is important that students who are on their way to becoming professionals and the professionals themselves are given practical training, so they know what to do in a real situation.
Blue Light Exercises are completed for that reason and this one involved student from the University of South Wales at its Glyntaff Campus. A mock-up road accident was put together in the car park outside of the campus. Emergency services worked together with dozens of student nurses to manage the staged scenes of a horrific car crash.
The emergency services were made up from Gwent Police probationary officers, a team from St John Cymru-Wales, specialist paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Serviceâs Hazardous Area Response Team, and South Wales Fire & Rescue Service personnel. The event was designed to give those on the front line an understanding of what could happen.
Outside the emergency services dealt with a collision between a car and a van, both of which were full of passengers. A pedestrian hit by the colliding vehicles âplayed deadâ on the floor beside the crash. Inside the campus, the entrance was used as an A&E waiting room and the fantastic training wards on site were used by the student nurses to see to the injured. There was also a domestic violence dispute in one room too that was dealt with by the police.
Inside the fictional Dewi Sant Hospital was a notice up stating âapproximate waiting times of 6 hoursâ. Event organiser Caroline Whittaker who is the academic manager in USWâs Faculty of Life Sciences and Education, and senior lecturer in occupational health said, âthe event is based on a real-life scenario which can involve a lot of casualties.â
To make the job even harder the âhospitalâ was due to close and move to a new facility 10 miles away in a weekâs time. As a result, the capacity and capability of the hospital were reduced. Mrs Whittaker said, âthe whole exercise was designed to give everyone involved an understanding of the challenges and stresses involved in dealing with a major incident.â
âExercises like these are essential to providing the best learning opportunities for our officers. Simultaneously, offering the chance and early experience to work with other agencies and to understand the operational practices from their point of view,â said Detective Sergeant Gareth Jenkins who oversees Student and Crime Training in the Learning and Development Department of Gwent Police.
The event was documented through photographs by students on the BA Photojournalism course at USW. Military personnel helped in the hospital wards with the nurses and make-up artists added the âinjuriesâ to the actors. Increasing the spectrum of professional training roles on the day.
A well-deserved round of applause from all involved came at the debriefing after the day was rounded up successfully.
