Pre 80’s Alfa Romeo were responsible for some of most aesthetically pleasing sports cars. True thoroughbreds - they drove remarkably well and were fairly affordable. In 1966 they received a tremendous honour when they were invited to create a conceptual exhibit of what the brand considered to be a innovative car of the future. In preparation Alfa assigned coachwork duties to Bertone. The project was headed by Marcelo Gandini, the young designer who propelled himself to automotive success with the phenomenon which was the Lamborghini Miura. Gandini prepared two identical prototypes for the exhibition, and he did not disappoint. Unveiled at the 1967 Montreal International and Universal Expo the Alfa Romeo ‘Montreal’ channeled many of the same cues that made the Miura so innovative. The body was wide and low with a shark-like nose extending through a curved fender and shoulder haunches into a truncated tail. The headlights incorporated 'blinds’ and stacked horizontal vents on the C-pillar assisted in appearing futuristic in concept. Just 3,925 examples of the appropriately named Montreal made it into production and has arguably grown to be Milan’s most iconic road car of the 1970s. #meandmybentley
