I played what will probably be my last playtest before the Kickstarter launches which means I will have successfully played or facilitated the playing of Story War with 5 different and diverse groups of people! Itās been a wild ride and I canāt wait for this thing to hit the shelves. Itās a marvel.
Todayās session was a free-for-all with 3 friends that we decided to play full casual after a botched round where it wasnāt seeming fun because we were all too tired and drained to argue. Instead, we went full interactive storytelling, only crowning a winner if they could choose a suitably hilarious way to win (at one point, the red dragon used his gold, bought the clock-tower and āevictedā the other players and another round ended when the skeleton used the skeleton key to open theĀ metaphorical door toĀ Midasā heart to give him an existential crisis, after which he left on a spiritual journey).
What we realized after playing through one full round is that weād each won one round so we played a single judgeless round and it is probably the most fun Iāve ever had playing the game. I accidentally knocked myself out as the Lich by destroying the beanstalk and plummeted to my doom and then Ryanās Angel and the Nikkiās Unicorn took out Mattās Mummy on the flying carpet through a HILARIOUS set of actions that I decided to act out with a pillow and then, deciding that they as forces of good didnāt want to fight and just decided they loved each other.
Which is especially sweet because theyāre dating.
And Story War just provides this wonderful experience to have fun with your friends in the most simple way: a game of make believe.
So Iāve played Story War from its most intense, screaming matches and all, down to a storytelling adventure with friends and I can honestly say itās one of the greatest and most versatile games I think Iāll ever play.
