‘The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley’ tells the story of Samuel and Loo Hawley, a father/daughter duo who, after moving from location to location following the death of Loo's mother, finally settle down in Olympus, Massachusetts. But the Hawleys aren't like the other families that live in Olympus. Loo is a loner who develops a reputation after standing up to her school bullies. And Samuel remains an enigma that even his closest neighbors don't trust or understand.

But the Hawleys have more to worry about than just fitting in their new town. Marked on Samuel's body are 12 bullet wounds, each telling a story from the mysterious former life that Hawley is trying to escape. But the past never stays behind us. As Loo begins investigating the death of her mother, the demons that Hawley so desperately tried to protect Loo from starts to catch up with him, threatening to shake the core of his family.

'Things We Lost In The Fire,' our next MashReads book, explores the surreal ways history shapes the present

This month, Mashable's social book club MashReads is reading Things We Lost In The Fire. Throughout its 12 stories, Things We Lost In The Fire explores a host of characters and scenarios shaped by Argentina's fraught and violent history.

Mashable House 2017: For the superfan in all of us

Join MashReads for a night of books, friends and food as we discuss our latest book club book 'A Separation' with author Katie Kitamura on Tuesday, March 28 at 6:30pm ET at Mashable's New York HQ.

In 'A Separation,' Kitamura tells a minimalist tale about a woman seeking out her estranged husband in a small Grecian town, who seems to have gone missing while researching a book about grief. Taking place in a blighted landscape of fire, crime, lethargy and unease, the story investigates the intricacies of intimacy when love has long since diminished.

While the narration and the action are calm and icily collected, the story boils just under the surface with regret, intrigue, communication across different experiences and desperately trying to understand the scope of what we lose when someone exits from our world.

History Is All You Left Me follows Griffin, a very nerdy teen growing up in New York City. When Griffin's ex-boyfriend Theo accidentally drowns, his whole world is thrown into chaos. Though they were separated at the time of Theo's death, Griffin always saw himself reuniting with Theo and living happily ever after. Now, instead, Griffin finds himself grappling with loss of his first love and the grief that comes when someone dies far to young.

To make matters more complicated, Griffin feels that the only person who understands his pain is Jackson, Theo's boyfriend at the time of Theo's death. When Jackson comes to town for Theo's funeral, Jackson and Griffin strike up an unlikely friendship that may be just as destructive as it is therapeutic.

Thoughtful and devastating (but in the best way), History Is All You Left Me beautifully captures the complexities of grief, the heartbreak of lost love and what happens when the futures we've imagined for ourselves are no longer possible.
