Seeing the Merrily We Roll Along pro shot in cinemas the way the universe intended — twice, a week apart, with each of my divorced parents who haven’t spoken to each other in almost a decade.
My experience of seeing Merrily We Roll Along 3 times in cinemas (the highlight of 2025 for me):
Session 1:
My mother loved it.
Her favourite scene was the TV interview.
Her favourite moment was Beth’s father saying ‘Elizabeth’.
And her favourite moment being a parent accepting their daughter’s marriage to someone they don’t approve of surely won’t haunt me for a long time.
Session 2:
My father really liked it.
His favourite scene was “Opening Doors” (liked the playing on the typewriter).
He also liked the TV interview (described it as ‘funny and sad at the same time’).
It made him think of the idea that, as he put it, ‘Life is lived forwards but can only be understood backwards’ (a variation on the famous Kierkegaard-attributed quote that ‘Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards’). For so many reasons, it seems appropriate that he would remember it the other way around.
Session 3:
I, for the third time, adored it.
I cried on:
* “Nothing permanent has happened/Just a temporary kink/Friendship’s something you don’t really lose…” (same as both the first and the second time).
* “Elizabeth?” (same as the second time).
I will be thinking about this production for the rest of my life.

Acted as the sound effects operator for a stage show last night, with full control of the pre/post-show playlist for the very first time, and I've honestly never felt so powerful in my life.
Yes, it will all be on theme. Yes, I will somehow also be playing songs by The Smiths, The Statler Brothers, and The Original Broadway Cast of Camelot in immediate succession. I am your new god, and you'd better learn to like it, because I'm not giving this up anytime soon.

As a child my most frequent and severe recurring nightmare was having to suddenly take the wheel of a speeding car, and the dream would always end just as it was about to crash.
When I was 14 I was hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing on an intersection, and miraculously left with only a massive bruise on my leg. (Interestingly at least to me, this was just after I'd started wearing glasses, and my main thought as we both fell on impact was not 'Oh no I'm going to die' but 'Oh no, these were $200'. The glasses left the crash in even better shape than I did).
Currently resisting the urge to tattoo the words "Everything is temporary" across my hand as a constant reminder.
Hey idk if this is common knowledge in the DBD fandom and I’m just late to the party but I thought I’d share anyway: the song that plays behind the montage of Charles and Edwin in the attic is Under The Milky Way by The Church
This has been my favourite Australian song of all time (as an Australian) since I first discovered it a few years ago (through Bebe Bettencourt's cover version at the end of the 2020 mystery film The Dry, which is worth listening to if you like slow sad songs: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5ASkc0fRvW0&list=RD5ASkc0fRvW0&index=1&pp=8AUB), and the sheer joy I felt hearing it when watching the attic scene for the first time...honestly one of the best needledrops I've seen in years.

I realise I'm late to the party on this one, but:
merrily we roll along just wouldn't work as well told in order. because yeah, it'd be sad to see mary go from a teetotaler to an alcoholic, but it's sadder to only know her as a drunk then suddenly see her younger self refuse a glass of champagne because she doesn't drink. it'd be sad to watch frank throw away what he could have had with mary, but it's sadder to see him go through woman after woman and then hear him say "i've just met the girl i ought to marry." there's something so much more poignant and tragic about learning what it was they lost after they've already lost it. meeting them at their worst and realizing they weren't always that way. that they didn't have to be that way.
As someone who is fascinated by non-linear stories, this is an excellent explanation of what makes "Merrily We Roll Along" such a good one.
