#oh my god did gallagher just discover the term dank this is so exciting #does he know it's a weed thing?? there's no way right
Of course Peter Gallagher knows that "dank" is a weed thing. He also knows that "in heat" is a sex thing and that when aliens "probe" someone it's in the anus.
These are words, not things. Heathcliff is a comic about symbols.
You're never going to get a comic where an alien actually probes someone any more than you're going to get a comic where the Man-Eating Giant eats a man. You're just going to get a dozen comics where aliens like the word "probe".
Heathcliff wears the ham helmet because it's the helmet you wear when you eat a ham. You can tell it's that helmet because it says "ham" on it. The helmet's function is determined not by its form but by its label.
summer = beach = sand = desert = mummy and thus there is the Summer Mummy. Because of symbolic associations that do not otherwise cohere.
Robots don't wear clothes but the mere act of labeling them "nude" makes them nude. And once a painting is a nude painting there has to be a fig leaf because a "nude" without a "figleaf" is "indecent".
A "ham" is a ham even when it's a car. A yam can be a ham can be a car because "yam" sounds like "ham". Symbols have overtaken things.
Jimmy is Heathcliff's attempt to manipulate these symbols.
popularity = billboards, popularity = charity fundraising, popularity = influencers. But standing underneath the word "influencer" has failed to make Jimmy popular. Why is this?

Yeah this game is really good I love how it explores broken families and how televangelism digs its claws into the people most in need and makes them feel horrible about basic things like existing and having needs and problems and how evangelical beliefs can drive people to violence against others and themselves. In the indie scene this game has been super influential over the course of the 10+ years it's existed. The main bulk of the gameplay is spent crying on enemies made of poop until they die
If nothing else, the Final Fantasy VII remakes are to be credited for rendering a whole new generation of gamers bent for pairings where the arpeggios-and-flower-crowns healer chick is blatantly down to fuck and the stoic badass warrior type does not have the emotional toolkit to deal with that.
No one cares that Toby Fox put a whole "Love Nikki: Dress-Up Queen" minigame in Deltarune Chapter 5. No one is talking about this. What if Chapter 6 is an actual gacha. What if Kris is doing this shit because their knifely ways have afflicted them with the eternal-suffering blood-curse, like Nidhogg. Nidhogg from "Love Nikki: Dress-Up Queen".
What if the upcoming chapters aren't "fun adventures" because we have to spend USD$1,600 rolling to complete the SS-Class "Holiday Hospitalization" set before we can even get a look at Carol's "Nara-Deer Ninja" sprite. What if Momo and Bobo show up. You're not taking this seriously.
Girl said sheβd let me see her DDs but when I got to her house she just had her shirt off and she didnβt even have a ps2 let alone a copy of digital devil saga. Waste of my damn time

WTF this is masterful, 10/10.
Other people have said this in notes, but the Bulwer-Lytton contest involves writing the most absurd opener you can think of and submitting it to the contest. It's not a judgment like the Razzies or the bad sex in books award or something; it's a game. Diana Murtaugh of Baltimore is to be congratulated for this win.
Did they task the vampires with hanging up the flags π

Worldbuilding exercise #137: imagining how answers regarding mildly obscure trivia about your setting's culture, geopolitics, and history would be phrased on a hypothetical episode of Celebrity Jeopardy (which for the purpose of this exercise exists in that world in precisely the same form as it does in ours).
I'm 100% serious about that first part, for the record. If you have a certain type of mindset, doing this exercise with regular Jeopardy might send you down a rabbit hole trying to decide whether a given answer is too obvious to be game show trivia, but doing it with Celebrity Jeopardy totally bypasses that potential stumbling block because on Celebrity Jeopardy a solid 50% of the answers are objectively dumb as hell.
