Driven by exhaust gas, a turbocharger composes a turbine and radial compressor, installed in the two ends of the turbine shaft with different casting housings. The turbo shaft itself is installed in the middle of bearing housing  and supported by it. A turbine housing and a compressor housing are at the both sides of the center housing, connected with the turbo housing. Here is about main structure of a turbocharger to work as a whole.

Turbo turbine

The turbine is a centripetal runoff or mixed flow device. The main components include a casting turbine wheel/impeller, a impeller heat shield and a turbine housing with an air inlet in the external diameter of a turbine housing. Exhaust gas flow into the turbine through the impeller blades and flow out from the diameter center of turbine housing.

Turbo Compressor This section is a centrifugal or radial outward flow device, comprised of a casting compressor wheel/impeller, a back plate, a compressor housing and so on. The air inlet is located in the central part compressor housing diameter. The air flow out from the compressor through the impeller blades and compressor housing's external diameter

Center housing

If the compressor housing and turbine housing are removed from a turbocharger, the rest turbo section would be center housing and rotor assembly. The center housing or turbo bearing housing is carefully designed bearing system supporting turbo compressor and turbine wheel. Different from a crankshaft bearing with a heavy load, this high-speed operation system is designed for positioning two impeller precisely, making it close to the outline of two housing. The key is to inject lubrication oil into the gas among center housing l oil hole, bearings and turbo shaft. The oil into the gaps is very helpful in to improving turbocharger efficiency and prolonging service life.

Recently, the leading global turbocharger supplier, Honeywell, is said to provide diesel engines VNT turbocharging technology for China automobile diesel engines multi-function car (SUV). The technology will benefit SUV H5 and H6 with high fuel economy and better engine performance.

Compared to the traditional gas bypass turbo technology, Honeywell VNT can improve the torque reaches as high as 30%, improve the engine running and acceleration at low speed and make cleaner combustion. At present, an auto turbo can be seen as the indispensable mechanical device which increase power output in the condition of same work efficiency. As an auto engine is driven by fuel combustion in the cylinder to produce power and fuel input is limited by air input of the cylinder, the power output is limited. For an engine of good performance, increasing output power can be made only through compressing more air into the cylinder to increase fuel quantity for more combustion power.

The main shaft of a turbocharger rotor is assembled with floating bearings whose inner holes have prescribed clearance among holes of turbine shaft and turbo cartridge. The bearings take radial load of the turbine rotor . The turbo cartridge (CHRA) is installed with thrust bearings which take axial load of the rotor.

Seal parts There are seal rings on turbine rotor shaft and seal gasket grooves. They play dual roles of oil seal and gas seal.

Turbocharger cartridge (CHRA)

The bearing housing is the supporting structure of a turbocharger, fixing diffuser back plate and turbine housing on the with bolt the turbo cartridge. The rotor radial load and axial load are transferred to the to cartridge CHRA respectively by floating bearings and thrust bearings. Meanwhile, the cartridge is also the turbocharger lubrication cooling device and its inlet hole links main oil duct of the engine lubrication system. Lubricating oil exerts lubrication function for floating bearings and thrust bearings, it also brings gas exhaust away from the turbo to ensure its normal operation.

Turbocharger turbine

It's mainly comprised of a turbine wheel and a turbine housing. The turbine is the prime mover which drive gas exhaust through the turbo compressor wheel/impeller into the turbine; the shaft  drive the compressor wheel rotate in high speed.

Turbo compressor

It's mainly made up of a compressor wheel/impeller and a turbo compressor housing, etc. The impeller rotates to get air in and start to compress air with the impeller blade rotation into the intake pipes.

Bypass valve

It's mainly formed by bypass bellows, links shaft and valves, etc. It runs to limit the turbocharger speed when the engine is in the big load; meanwhile, it reduces the engine explosion pressure in full load and maximum speed. The turbocharger with bypass valve can improve low-speed performance and the closed valve can improve the transient response.
