to the average person, this would be an impossible relationship module, understandingly so, however dating a second year resident much like yourself meant that trinity understood entirely what the job entailed and what it took from you, and that, sometimes, you don’t get the luxury of sharing a regular 9-5 routine with your partner where your schedules match up perfectly and the two of you get to wake up next to you each other every day and enjoy almost every meal together on a regular basis.
except, maybe, on rare occasions like today, it was an especially slow night shift, the kind where no crazies walk through the hospital doors and you and your colleagues actually have time to finish your charting before morning shift hand offs. dr. abbot had told you that tonight the er was rarely overstaffed and that you would do more good clocking in earlier the next day and that he preferred that you’d go home and do exactly that.
so, that’s exactly what you did, you got your stuff and drove to your and trinity’s (and dennis’s) shared apartment and got in at exactly six o’clock in the morning, which meant that you had exactly one hour to shower and snuggle in your girlfriends arms before she had to leave for her shift.
you were curled up underneath the skin of trinity’s arms when you felt her weight lift off you. you whine at the loss of contact before you feel trinity hovering over you, her body caging you to the matress, her eyes wide in awe— if not surprise, she can tell your still awake, or at the very least in that stage where you’re neither asleep or completely conscious. “hey.” she whispers into your ear in greeting, her fingers trailing softly over the skin of your cheek. “what are you doing here so early?” she snorts. “or, well, late for you, i mean, aren’t you crazies supposed to be working until seven? what happened to patient hand-offs? did the hospital explode or something?”
“not crazy.” you mumble into her skin, a little petulantly, before pulling her arm under your chin and snuggling back into her skin. “slow shift, sent home, start early… today.” you mumble sleepily into her arm, recalling what abbot had told you earlier that night over the sleepiness for that was currently clouding your neurons and your judgement.
“not crazy?” trinity asks back at you, after humming over your poor recollection of the night's events, of lack of thereof. “what do you call working from 7PM to 7AM five days a week?” She questions back, pressing her cheek to your own so you can feel her skin against your own even if only for a moment more.
“productive?”
trinity laughs, soft and carefree in that special way that she only is with you. “is that why you’re talking like a zombie from those weird ass movies that huckleberry makes us watch?” she responds in kind, before placing a chaste kiss on top of your head and lifting off the bed to get ready for the day.
but before she can make her escape you grab her arm and pull her back onto the bed, making her collapse on top of you and let out a ‘woof’ sound in the process. “don’t go.” you plead, your voice soft like a child’s, you knew it was irritational, but you couldn’t help it, the feel of her skin against your own was too good to give up.
trinity huffs, but not out of annoyance. “i have to go.” she explains, her fingers trailing softly over your scalp. “otherwise robby is gonna fire me. you know i’m already the pariah of the day shift because of golden boy i can’t exactly arrive two hours later because the missus wants morning or well… late night cuddles.” she huffs, it was too early in the morning to discuss your weird nocturnal habits with your half sleeping form.
you don’t let go of her though , not yet, anyway. “i could work and you could cuddle me.” you offer.
trinity laughs at the sheer absurdity of your statement. “yeah? what? is that your five year plan or something? me, at home, barefoot and pregnant and you working to pay the bills while i make dinner and cuddle your needy ass?”
you smile mischievously at her words. “there’s a thought.”
she snorts. “yeah, a scary thought.” she states. “and, FYI, if one of us is gonna end up pregnant one day it’s definitely not gonna be me.” She speaks into your ear, before nibbling on your earlobe and making a shiver run down your spine.
you can’t help but play into it. “are you saying you think about me pregnant?”
trinity presses her body a little closer to yours, her arms hold you just a little tightly before her mouth moves from the shell of your ear to the tender skin of your neck, her teeth grazing it while she speaks to you in a voice that’s definitely deeper than what you are used to. “i think about you in lots of ways.” she confesses, before kissing your neck and lifting up her head to look at you.
