Today, 23 year old Nairo Quintana secured himself a second place (effectively) at the Tour de France. He also will earn the polka dot jersey (King of the Mountain) and the white jersey (best young rider). This is the best showing from a Latin American rider EVER. Did I mention he’s 23 years old? Earlier in the year, I traveled to Colombia for Manual for Speed to document the cycling culture and development system that Quintana grew up in. I’ve experienced things, I’ve seen a lot of stuff. Being a Pro Mechanic is a little knowledge and a lot of experience. The latter is most of the job. Efficiency. Learning to be efficient overall is more important than being an expert on wrapping handlebars. It’s absolutely about efficiency. Efficiency isn’t just about getting everything done, it’s also about avoiding late nights in a hotel parking lot.

You might say its a rough life at times. For the most part we are uneducated. I tried to quit, you know, and work for a big corporation. I didn’t exactly set the world on fire, so I’m back here. It’s a bit of a tail between my legs sort of thing, but this is what I know.—Fernando Tapia

After the Tour of Utah in 2010, Axel offered me a spot on Bontrager-Livestrong in 2011. Of course I said yeah.
