Studio Inis
Augmented reality // augmented materiality. Balance between the digital and analog, how can they inform each other? Moving between both fields, as a way to explore sensorial physical experiences.
Participatory City - Every One Every Day project visiting day.
Really inspiring project, at the beginning stages. 5 years trial period, to allow for longer term testing of ideas. Also allowing time to measure impact and to implement “legacy” solutions (solutions that will last after the project ends). Charity model, also looking at how to use public funding in a more holistic way, especially in the context of scarcity.
Participatory City - cont’d
Community newsletter: interesting using a older more physical form of communication (compared to having everything digital). Used because it was the most accessible way to communicate with people in the borough (more specifically in a 10 min radius from the center.). Makes sense as it does not exclude older generations.

The Value of Social Design - When is it good enough?
Social Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Design, what is the difference? - Social entrepreneurship: balancing between financial and social goals, so a “double bottom line”. The commodification of social need = “philanthro-capitalism.” - Social Innovation: Combining services in a way that’s beneficial for a large group of people. Looking at market errors and system errors, but both need to enable macro scale transformation. (More generalized audience.) - Social Design: social engagement not tied up with business. A more micro-scale transformation as it is heavily based on the immediate context within a community.
Energetic Algae Project - Brenda Parker
Algae as upcyclers: - nitrate level in groundwater is increasing, it’s really costly for water filtration companies to remove it, they have to use anion exchange methods. - Waste nitrate brine can be transported to algae biorefineries to make oils, proteins, pigments, fuel. - **Altech Algae company
Steampunk Algae: - Bio-accumulation of cadmium in soil in areas with a lot of industry. - Using algae to absorb cadmium in soil, some hydrogels can as well. - question is how to make this technology accessible for lower income areas??
Carlo Ratti - MIT Senseable City - Be wary of our assumptions about human experience especially at an age where everything is becoming more sensors and controlled.
- Using cellphone data to look at larger trends at different scales. Ex. Integration and segregation in cities and where that starts to become an issue.
- Digital tech has compressed the city, overlaps of systems and places of work, play, home, etc.
Kara Vanaskana - Visual representation of electricity and the human body? - Thoughts on people as parallel circuits, what does intimacy mean in this context?

From macro to micro. Interesting way of turning a complex information into an interactive and accessible form of communication. Data was used to make building environments and characters with individual narratives that all fit into the larger system.

Thought
McDonaldization of services and Gig economy...
Gig economy is the outsourcing of services.
Urban imagination and social innovation through design & science
Circular Economy
What is a circular economy? - A different economic system, where there is a regeneration of equity
Current economy = globalization economy which focuses on growth -> financialization of economy -> using money to make money -> etc
Role of Business in a Circular Economy: - feedback loops for resources, materials, energy. - changing markets, competitors, consumers - harness profit motive to drive interest Enabling conditions? - Closed loop systems - Resilience Theory - how do socio-ecological systems work? - healthy economies - where there is circulation and flow of wealth - it doesn’t accumulate in one area.

- Neopeasants: reconnecting to the environment - a solution for sustainability?
- Process led design.
Digital Fabrication - Opportunity for Social Innovation
- Democratization of Design - Networks of Maker/Fab labs - Spaces for social transformation - technological approach - entrepreneurship - Constructivism Culture - How can we inspire people to become social entrepreneurs? - empower people through art and design - generate income through their favourite recreational activities - build a network of trusted peers to enhance collab. work - Add maker labs to area lacking in opportunity
