Since the beginning, it was always the same.
“Caleb is always hogging MC.”
“He never lets anyone near her.”
“God he’s still so obsessed.”
“Why can’t he leave her alone?”
“I know they grew up together but…”
But what they didn’t see was little MC glaring menacingly at the girl Caleb was playing with on the playground. They didn’t see her climb to the top of the monkey bars and jump, purposely hurting herself. They never saw the triumphant smile that later crossed her face after he came running over, frantically wiping away her fake tears and pulling her into his arms.
People never saw the way MC would insert herself into his schedule or follow him whenever he went to the store. Wanting to see if he’d keep his promises on the snacks he was supposed to get her. They never caught her sneaking into his room just to watch him sleep, listening to the steady rise and fall of his breathing. Checking the way his brow furrowed from the sensations shooting through his robotic arm, desperately wanting to absorb his pain.
They didn’t know the extent of her ownership over him. The way she’d call him hers.
How she’d pout whenever he came home later than he said he would.
“Aren’t you my Caleb?” she’d chastise.
And he would immediately fall to his knees, begging for forgiveness when she’d withhold her affection. Outwardly, her face would remain twisted in anger, but inside she was practically glowing with delight.
The way she’d make him beg for it until she finally relented, sighing:
“Give me more, it’s not enough.”
“Promise you’ll never do it again.”
“I forgive you my Caleb.”
Yet secretly, she loved every second of it. She relished in the desperate whimpers, the frustrated growls, the way he’d fall apart for her. The way he’d latch himself onto her body, making up for the supposed feelings of hurt. How she’d scream “it’s too much” knowing it’d spur him on harder. In the aftermath, tracing the deep marks she’d left on his skin for all to see.
Yet no one ever seems to realize that MC is just as obsessed, as Caleb.
