stuff I'm currently working on: First Quarter Quell fic

For these the 25th Annual Hunger Games—our first Quarter Quell— as a reminder to the rebels that their children are dying every year for their choice to initiate violence, every district will be made to hold an election and vote on the tributes that will represent them in the Games.

Some districts will send their tributes as an honor and a sacrifice. Fewer will sacrifice their fittest in hope. Most will turn their eyes to their neighbors' children—the dregs of their districts. Traitors, thieves, and killers whose families can't shutter them away in the Capitol's new arena.

Four of these tributes stand out, a mix of favorites. A Peacekeeper's daughter from District 12, a backstabber from District 6, a cursed runt girl from District 11, and a golden child from District 4. In a year where the winds of the Games are shifting, it'll be an arduous path to Victor of the First Quarter Quell.

I'm a bit confused on the family relations here. I got the impression from TBOSAS that it was implying that Maude Ivory was Katniss's ancestor, due to her eidetic memory for songs that Katniss also possesses, but given that her grave is the one highlighted here alongside Lucy Gray and Lenore Dove, it seems to be implying that Maude Ivory is Lenore Dove's mother who died in childbirth. There must be other graves there (the adults who were murdered when the Covey were forced into the district, at the very least), so naming hers was deliberate.

I suppose it's not that relevant, since Katniss certainly doesn't know of her own relation to the Covey. I doubt Snow knows about it either, since Katniss is not Covey and the only thing obviously tying her to them is the songs (and maybe the pin, but she got that from Madge anyway), which of course used to be sung openly in the district. As much as Katniss's singing must drive him up the wall with dredging up those memories, he doesn't really have any way of knowing that she's actually Lucy Gray's first cousin twice or thrice removed or whatever.

But I still want to know for curiosity's sake. And why Burdock wasn't raised Covey...

no one asked but my personal theory (and what I hope is canon, tbh) is that Burdock isn't related to the Covey by blood at all. More like the girl Barb Azure was seeing was an Everdeen girl, and maybe an eventual aunt/great-aunt to Burdock. It would explain why he and Lenore Dove consider each other cousins, and how he knows Covey songs, but why he isn't actually Covey himself. I think it's a very valuable message on how musical tradition can live on and evolve into something bigger than itself.

and it doesn't erase barb azure's identity lol.

i guess the other option is Barb Azure went the comphet way and married an Everdeen man for survival purposes, and the man just didn't want his kid raised as Covey, which could make sense since they were kind of social outcasts in 12 around that time. and eventually it resulted in Burdock. but i find that slightly more trite and convenient. idk though

lit just picked up SOTR again and the book refers to Lenore Dove as one of Burdock's "distant cousins on his ma's side" so Lenore Dove is certainly not a first cousin, and Barb Azure was never part of the Everdeen family. rather, Burdock's mother was related to the Bairds somehow, either by blood or family ties. At the very least Burdock would be a grandchild of Barb Azure on his mother's side. Maybe a great-nephew of hers, if my theory of her not marrying is true
