powder  displays  early  hints  at  her  mental  health  long  before  vi  “abandons”  her,  so  it’s  very  clear  that  a  long  life  of  trauma  has  worsened  pre-existing  conditions.  in  particular,  powder  is  born  with  adhd:  as  a  toddler,  she  was  fairly  hyperactive  and  oftentimes  quick  to  emotional  shifts,  but  any  investigation  into  it  is  thwarted  by  the  death  of  her  and  vi’s  parents.

their  family’s  death,  and  powder’s  already  present  adhd,  create  a  strong  level  of  attachment  and  relationship  imbalance  between  herself  and  vi.  vi  becomes  the  center  of  powder’s  world,  the  point  through  which  she  navigates  and  maneuvers.  she  loves  vi,  trusts  her,  depends  on  her,  and  idolizes  her;  as  the  only  member  left  of  their  family,  vi  becomes  a  surrogate  mother  and  father,  the  only  certainty  powder  has  left.  vi’s  approval  means  everything,  and  her  displeasure  is,  in  powder’s  eyes,  risking  the  loss  of  all  she  has  left         while  her  attachment  is  seen  as  fairly  typical  for  traumatized  orphans  in  the  undercity,  powder’s  attachment  and  dependance  on  vi  is  noted.  she  can  make  other  friends,  have  outside  attachments,  and  outside  needs,  but  powder  will  always  circle  back  to  vi.

their  early  trauma,  and  this  attachment,  spark  a  powerful  range  of  emotional  shifts  for  powder.  she’s  quick  to  distraction  and  quick  to  moving  from  one  item  to  the  next,  although  when  her  interest  is  caught,  it  is  caught  hard.  she  displays  quick  reflexes  and  a  good  sense  of  parameters,  which  can  be  typical  for  adhd,  but  she  also  can  be  quick  to  anger,  frustration,  or  rage.  when  vi  leaves  her  behind  during  their  quest  to  save  vander,  powder’s  sense  of  abandonment  is  coupled  with  the  profound  inability  to  focus  on  anything  but  her  own  failings;  she’s  unable  to  distract  or  remove  herself  from  that  anguish,  and  it  causes  her  to  lash  out  at  herself.  the  hextech  crystal  provides  a  new  and  more  powerful  catch  for  her  attention,  and  it  presents  her  the  opportunity  to  be  of  use.

which  leads  directly  to  the  most  traumatic  instance  of  powder’s  life.  she  is,  accidentally  of  course,  but  fully  at  fault  for  the  explosion;  she  commits  an  act  that  she  has  only  ever  equated  with  the  enforcers.  she  singlehandedly  removes  the  protection  of  their  family,  and  she  enrages  vi,  who  lashes  out  at  her.  powder  has  no  chance  to  focus  on  one  particular  grief,  because  it  happens  in  quick  succession         vander,  mylo,  and  claggor  are  dead,  vi  attacks  her,  vi  abandons  her,  and  the  man  who  just  knifed  vander  is  about  to  kill  her,  too.  powder  focuses  on  the  sole,  exclusive  pain  that  she  has  dreaded  her  entire  life:  she  focuses  on  vi  leaving,  and  she  is  never  able  to  fully  separate  or  distract  herself  from  that  grief,  that  rage,  and  that  anguish.

it  would  be  fair  enough  to  say  that  one  moment  could  have  triggered  her  psychotic  descent,  but  powder  tosses  herself  headfirst  into  that  abyss.  she’s  raised  by  silco,  and  embraces  the  destructive,  manipulative,  and  underhanded  tactics  of  his  empire;  to  survive,  she  accepts  and  even  enjoys  the  chance  to  lash  out.  this  environment  is,  ironically  enough,  perfect  for  her  adhd;  she’s  constantly  presented  with  new  material,  new  action,  her  quick  reflexes  are  an  asset,  and  her  lifelong  interest  in  weaponry  and  explosives  are  encouraged  and  funded.  

the  problem  is  that  powder  never  gets  to  address  what  happened  That  Night.  vi  abandons  her,  and  powder  has  no  one  to  turn  to  in  regards  to  her  own  overwhelming  guilt  over  what  happened.  in  many  ways,  her  mental  age  withers  here         she  reverts  frequently  to  childish  idiosyncrasies,  and  she  even  constructs  life  sized  replicas  of  mylo  and  claggor      (  which,  in  my  canon,  she  uses  first  to  pretend  everything  is  fine,  and  then  to  try  and  justify  herself  to.  )      

by  the  time  vi  returns,  powder  has  fully  developed  schizoaffective  disorder,  of  the  bipolar  type.  this  includes:

delusions — having false, fixed beliefs, despite evidence to the contrary

hallucinations, such as hearing voices or seeing things that aren't there

bizarre or unusual behavior

symptoms of depression, such as feeling empty, sad or worthless

periods of manic mood, with an increase in energy and a decreased need for sleep over several days, and behaviors that are out of character

it  is  critical  to  note  that  despite  these  hallucinations,  powder  is  an  incredibly  smart,  incredibly  cunning  woman.  she  has  periods  of  lucidity  that  allow  her  to  plot  and  scheme  just  as  well  as  silco;  she  regularly  demonstrates  her  own  forethought  and  rapid  planning.  she’s  a  dangerous  foe,  and  while  heightened  emotional  distress  can  hinder  her  ability  to  think,  it’s  not  a  guarantee.  jinx  can  and  will  lash  out,  as  she  does  when  vi  inadvertently  triggers  her  with  memories  of  their  dead  family.

the  shimmer  she’s  injected  with  compounds  these  issues,  heightening  her  skills  and  worsening  her  delusions.  it  exaggerates  both  her  genuine  powers  and  her  dark,  violent  impulses:  killing  silco  ultimately  proves  to  jinx  that  she  is  exactly  as  her  namesake.  in  her  eyes,  it  proves  what  she’s  feared  all  along         vi  never  loved  her,  would  never  love  her,  and  would  abandon  her  again;  that  she,  jinx,  really  was  a  threat  to  everyone;  and  that  the  world  was  out  to  get  her        (  this  last  bit  in  large  part  to  the  deal  silco  was  offered.  )      

oftentimes,  jinx’s  hallucinations  will  manifest  as  mylo  critiquing  her,  or,  occasionally,  claggor.  her  trauma  has  warped  the  genuine  familial  relationships  she  had  with  both  boys  to  be  nothing  but  hateful  and  cruel.  she  often  hears  them  more  than  sees  them,  but  her  hallucinations  will  include  visions,  those  scribble-like  appearances  that  scream  over  the  actual  scene.  the  shimmer  heightens  how  present  they  are  and  how  they  feel,  further  blurring  the  line  between  reality  and  hallucination.
