J'ai peur d'aimer pour rien

Adrien Agreste was homeschooled for his entire life and therefore didn’t have any friends except for Chloé, who is the exact opposite of him in terms of personality (she’s rude, highly critical of everything, inconsiderate, etc.)

He was also deprived from any kind of parental love/care from his own father, Gabriel Agreste, who conciously sends villains after his OWN SON, who prioritizes his own villainous motives before him. Adrien has dealt with his mom, the only person who he probably has idolized and learned love & kindness from, leaving; without a caring father or even friends who were there for him for support. On top of these, his father wasn’t there for him on his first Christmas without his mom, which drove Adrien so sad to the point where he escaped from his home in the middle of the night to stalk his friends’ families and feel even more depressed upon seeing their healthy family atmospheres.

His father neglects him to the point that he actually goes missing upon feeling as if nobody would even care if he did so. To the point where he can’t even give a proper answer to Ladybug when she asks him “do you think he’d take it out on his own son?” in The Collector. To the point his friends have to feel as if they need to speak up against the unfairness of the way Gabriel treats Adrien, like in The Bubbler.

He’s been “locked away” in a huge mansion all by himself, without any friends or a parental figure other than his mom, who escapes, to give some love to him. He’s put on a busy schedule that includes him doing modeling, taking Chinese & fencing lessons AND saving Paris every single day? And he doesn’t ONCE tell his father to cut him some slack every now & then??

Even though he’s only known Chloé as a friend, he never once acts mean towards anyone in school & even tells Chloé to be nicer to everyone, or else they can no longer be friends. He openly tells people that he hasn’t had much experience with friendships his whole life, acts as kindly as he can & never once speaks against his father.

He even tries to establish a deeper bond with his father (by initiating hugs, feeling over-thankful for a scarf he thinks his father has bought for him, always waiting for him before meals etc).

I know Adrien is far from perfect, but it really impresses me that Adrien managed to turn out the way he did. His family background forms an ideal villain backstory, but no, the guy saves Paris every single day instead.

adrien was homeschooled. he wasn’t locked in a cage from infancy and prevented from going outside and interacting with humans. he had parents that taught him right from wrong. he has a modeling career where he works with others. he had chloe as a friend when he was a child. about the only thing adrien didn’t have was an opportunity to go to a public school, and that prevented him from having a large, consistent circle of friends.

he’s no more ignorant about love and romance than someone who has never dated or never been kissed. and besides he knows enough about love and romance to help his friend flirt with a classmate so he’s not an idiot.

also, when he makes a mistake and doesn’t own up to it, that’s not the fault of his upbringing. that’s his own fault. you can’t make the excuse “oh he’s been sheltered all his life he doesn’t know how to apologize and own up to his mistakes” because adrien has been shown to be able to tell right from wrong and has even called marinette/ladybug out on her slip ups in regards to her harshness and her jealousy.

So, normally when I ask for possible donations, commissions, etc. its for a bad financial or life threatening emergency.

Well, the emergency this time already happened and now we’re just trying to recover and enjoy plans we’d already set up for this week into the next.

We had to move twice this month, which hit us really hard when we already didn’t have much. We moved into a dangerous and infested home the first time around but thankfully were able to get out of the lease and moved into a better place within less than two weeks. Of course, despite getting that money back, that doesn’t compensate us for the costs of the two moving trucks, the cancellation/transfer/startup costs of utilities twice over, the days we had to take off work to make the moves happen, or the extra costs involved with trying to treat our home and cats for the infestation at both places (there were huge amounts of not only roaches but fleas in the first place, the second has roaches but nowhere near as many) as well as general set up for a new place.

((By the way, if anyone wants to move into a heavily infested home in a more crime heavy area with holes in the windows, a front door lock thats broken, creepy neighbors, and no cell service if you ever do get in trouble and need to call anyone, they listed it back up on their site before we even gave back the keys, so be my guest.))

I’m not salty. No. Why would I have any reason to be salty?

While those financial woes are already enough of a problem, Dragon Con is in the same month as all of this. We originally weren’t going to go this year due to financial stress but then not only did a celebrity whom my girlfriend idolizes announce going but one who literally saved my life also did. One of my biggest dreams is to meet him and thank him for giving me the will to live during a time I had lost all of that will and I honestly thought I might never get the chance to do that. But here it is and I can’t let it slip away from me.

We decided we had to go then and bought our tickets with our tax returns back in January and have been gathering bits of our costumes and such over time since then. Outside of those last minute adjustments, our costumes are bought, the car has been serviced to be safe for the trip, and we have most of our supplies for the trip itself. However, now we don’t have money for pretty much anything at the con itself. I ended up having to buy our photo ops on credit with a card I had specifically gotten to try and reduce the interest I was already paying (it has 0% APR on balance transfers for over a year). I was planning to transfer some of my current debt over to save on interest and help us get out of debt sooner and now I’m having to use it to pay for the entire primary reason we’re going to the con as well as the food, gas, lyft/uber rides, etc that we’ll need to pay for while there. Basically, the extra move has entirely fucked up my plan for getting our debt more under control and is really mucking up our plans for the one event we decided to reward ourselves with after this shit year.

Anyway, I wanted to be upfront with you guys that if you donate (and/or contribute to my art by buying commissions or supporting me on Patreon) that the funds right now will likely go to the con first and the debt second. I don’t want anyone to feel deceived if you decide to donate and then suddenly see con photos soon after.

There will also be some other really huge events going on during this so some extra cushioning to help out would be greatly appreciated.

It’d been awhile since Adrien Agreste had stepped foot in the Agreste mansion. He made his own ends meet and his father was too busy to see him when he’d lived in the same house, let alone after Adrien had moved out. He’d set up a meeting with his father, (which had been almost depressingly difficult, but that was a story for another time) But the trouble had been worth it. After all today was an important day.

The ring on his finger felt extremely heavy ( No, not his miraculous. He’d put that thing away a long time ago) His engagement ring. An inconspicuous silver band that rested on his pointer finger. No gems. Nothing flashy, just how he wanted it. In Adrien’s opinion it looked better on Nino because of how the band contrasted perfectly with his skin, but that was besides the point. The point was that he was engaged to his best friend and he was going to tell his father about it.
