For me, it’s so hard to decide and I might make a post listing my top five or ten but if I have to pick quickly I must go with the “Morwen he had seen once” passage and Aerin’s burning of Brodda’s hall, both from The Children of Húrin. More generally I love many of the descriptions of creeks and streams.

Summary:
Bilbo is the only palaeontologist allowed to dig in the Badlands around Erebor.
He has been permitted to dig in a place that calls to him, though he doesn't know why. All he knows is that this is the find of a lifetime, and yet that is not what has him excited. The feeling of having known these creatures that are now fossils is what has drawn him in.
And as always, an excerpt:
Bilbo blinked as he looked around himself. He was dreaming. He must have been, because he knew he was not a dinosaur, and yet he was being dragged around inside the shell of the dinosaur he was somehow inhabiting but was unable to influence. He could feel what the dinosaur was feeling. Anger, worry, hunger, confusion. A storm of emotions that he didn’t know if they were his or were the creatures he had apparently hijacked in his sleep. He was even more confused when the body he inhabited let out a low coo, one he hadn’t known dinosaurs could make. Admittedly, he wasn’t sure if they actually could make such a noise or if it was made up, just like him being a dinosaur, asleep or not, was clearly a product of his overactive imagination. He didn’t have much time to think of it as he heard a soft rustling coming from the trees behind him. Bilbo felt it as his … the dinosaur’s … legs moved, turning him around. He felt his mouth open as he let out a challenging bellow to the trees before him. From the way he was moving his head and from what he could see from the corner of his eyes, he was some type of Ceratopsidae. He had to be from the size of his head to the horns that were never quite fully in sight, but there nonetheless. If his dream continued, Bilbo supposed he would have to look in a pool of water to figure out which one he was. He would have thought it weird to be dreaming of such a thing any other time, but he supposed the fossils he had just found were affecting his subconscious. Though he wasn’t sure how his thoughts were so clear. He had never known he was in a dream before. But what else could this be? It wasn’t as if he had ever been a dinosaur in another life after all.

i do think it's important to realise even if you like the books that when white supremacists really like LOTR they aren't mistaken about the work or misguided or foolishly failing to comprehend the text. they are identifying something very much present in the work that aligns with and expresses their beliefs about the world and connecting with it

fun fact about character development by the way. you can make them develop worse.
like I mean this very seriously as writing advice. the character should experience events and make decisions that make them different at the end of the story. they should be changed. they do not have to be improved.
they can get worse. they can make decisions of an increasingly terrible nature. they can stop taking risks on kindness. they can discover how much they can get away with. they can find religion, or abandon it, with negative effects on their moral creed. the character has to develop. the character does not have to grow.
