Three things I learned at the Dingle animation festival:

- Don’t sell yourself short. You have more potential than you realise. Everyone goes through periods of feeling inept, it doesn’t pass, you just have to learn to work with it.

- There isn’t a language barrier problem in studios with workers of different nationalities as most of them run through English. Lack of proficiency in other languages will not prevent me getting work in other countries.

- Toonboom is being used by many companies and they have studios in several cities in different countries and it’s easy and common to switch between studios. This is definitely a software worth learning to use.

What I learned about animation in a local/international context:

The industry is really opening up in Ireland at this time and we’re entering the industry at the right moment. Many large companies are outsourcing to Ireland and there are more jobs than people to work them.

While the USA and Canada animate mostly using character rigging, the majority of Europe are still hand drawing animations frame by frame. The UK and Ireland are mostly following the USA and Canada but also do an amount of hand drawn.

Knowing other languages is not a requirement for working in other countries as most studios run through English and have many nationalities working in them.

Toon Boom is a software worth learning, it’s the most popular 2D animation software at the moment.
