Now, anyone who is able to access the Internet can access any illegal drug he or she wants. As the virtual drug bazaar gradually transforms from a niche market into a multi-million-dollar-a-year business, the anonymous individuals behind the phenomenon are realizing the profit potential of tapping into a broader consumer base. Until not long ago, to access a drug marketplace online, one would have first needed to download a Tor browser, then find a .onion dark web address, then purchase bitcoins, then log on to the dark web and finally complete a transaction. If none of this makes sense to you, you are the type of consumer these new drug-dealing sites are attempting to reach. “Chemical Love” is a German-language site accessible through any regular browser: Safari, Firefox … you name it. Unlike deep web sites, anonymization technology is not needed to visit this drug bazaar. The site is so candid about its operations — which its homepage suggests include the sale of cocaine, methamphetamines and MDMA — it even has a YouTube ad. Similar to dark sites, users must pay for their purchases with Bitcoins. Another such website is Forbidden Market, administered by one “Mr. Evil.” In addition to featuring a .onion dark web address, which can only be accessed using a Tor browser, and a “clearnet” link that can be accessed using a regular browser, the site’s landing page also features a link to Localbitcoins.com, a well-known site helping users obtain the online currency via cash or anonymous bank deposits. “They put it in their phone, and they’re like ‘wow, this actually exists,’ and there’s a link where I can buy Bitcoin in cash locally,” Mr. Evil told Motherboard in an encrypted chat. The Forbidden Market link for users with standard browsers redirects to a proxy server that connects to the marketplace without the help of a Tor browser, according to Mr. Evil. “The true location of the (market) server is still hidden but clearnet is available,” he explained. Users are right to feel wary, as regular websites would record their IP addresses. But proxy sites, like the one Forbidden Market uses, turn off these logs. More than users, however, it’s site administrators who should be worried. A little digging around Forbidden Market’s proxy on the part of Motherboard produced the email, phone number and address used to register the site. None of those, however, point to a real location or person. Despite the ever-growing nature of the dark web’s drug marketplace, deals made using it only comprise a fraction of worldwide drug transactions. Vendors realize that moving into the mainstream is risky, but likely do it because in their mind, the benefits outweigh the risks. While it may seem online drug transactions are more dangerous than in-person ones, evidence suggests otherwise. The Silk Road, the dark web’s most notorious drug-selling site, was shut down by the FBI a few years ago. Its creator, William Ulbricht, a 29-year-old San Franciscan, was arrested as well. With his site, he wanted to make buying drugs cleaner and safer: No longer would people need to meet face-to-face with shady drug dealers in bad parts of town or worry about their product being laced with something dangerous. Oscar Rickett, who wrote an opinion piece about the site for The Guardian points out, “Silk Road could have ended up providing a real alternative to the cartels.
