Anyone who's ever met Maia Asalfi will likely tell you she's either the most charming or the most intimidating person they've ever met. Neither impression can be considered innacurate.
She has known loss from a young age. Maia's mother passed away giving birth to her and her twin, and their father was already lost at sea even before that. The children were raised by older sister Irena, who was eighteen years older, and thus were allowed a fair ammount of freedom. Maia in particularly felt drawn to the sea, the last connection she had with her long missing father, which culminated in her becoming a pirate like he always wanted to, but never could.
Irena, too, succumbed to illness at a young age, leaving 16 year-olds Maia and her twin to take care of their sister's now orphaned child. Because the two are all the family she has left, they're the only ones Maia allows herself a deep connection with. Otherwise, death is too unpredictable to allow herself to become attached to anyone. Anyone human, anyway.
With the old, but unused boat she inherited from her late father â now renamed Lady Irena â, Maia began her life as a pirate three years after her sister's death, but it wasn't until a couple more years later that she had the epiphany that would truly bring in the big money: selling street ethereum inside and outside of Obsidian City.
Her boat allowed her to be quick and access all the different districts, and because this immediately proved to be a lucrative enterprise, she was quick to gather suppliers and even a crew. Maia does also smuggle other items to and from Obsidian City, and sells legal products as a front, but it's in the ethereum that the gold really lies.
Is it immoral to sell a product that you yourself are perturbed by? Maybe so... but Maia has workers to pay and a family to feed. It is a free city, after all.
