JD: Stressed. Rambler. Timeline? Unclear. A lot of extraneous information included, but he mostly gets there eventually. I have made three pages of notes. The resulting email is nine paragraphs minimum, and that's with pruning.

Buck: Also rambler, but less likely to take a tangent. Very cheerful given the situation. Most likely to be calling to help out a friend, but if he's calling for a friend he will have to make notes about what info he needs and call back again later, he did Not think to ask questions ahead of time.

Chris and Nathan: Answer my questions with the appropriate amount of elaboration. Both use the military alphabet when spelling things and I love them for it. Neither call while driving and the background noise is nonexistent.

Josiah: starts his answers with "well that would depend" more often than I would like, but to be fair the information is pertinent.

Vin: Answers my questions ONLY. Despises that I ask him to spell things, possibly enough to hang up. Also doesn't want to give me his email address.

He’s doing self care, he needs enrichment

Josiah: Old timer who refuses to become a partner. Possibly dabbled in tax law at some point and is now the only one in the firm who knows anything about it so he gets called in whenever it comes up even though he hates it. Also refuses to become a Judge and has an hourly rate that is obscenely low considering how much experience he has, even though this is career 3+. Terrible about making his clients actually pay him. Still prints off his emails.

Ezra: Partner. Dresses like he's going to be in Court every day. Does Not lend his robes. Vacation whore. Secretly emailing his assistant and working as usual like the whole time. Just in Vegas. If he gets called on it he'll call it a working vacation or say something urgent came up, he will Not admit he actually gives a damn. Loves Court. Judges hate him (except Travis).

Buck: Family Law. His clients think he's a sweetheart and wonder if he really has enough teeth to get what they want. His clients exes think he's kind of an idiot. The other lawyers know he is Not. Has been called out for being dramatic by a judge in court and possibly in writing and does not care. Has never met a text message he wasn't willing to put in an affidavit. Totally cool with having his clients bring kids to signing appointments.

Vin: That guy who knows All the caselaw. (bc he had to read those judgments once and he was Not going through them again). If you need a precedent in his area, just ask and he will spit out three names and save you six hours. Loves talk to text and uses his standing desk exclusively. Also dresses worse than his assistant and avoids Court at all costs, to the extent of bribing other lawyers to go for him and possibly arranging his vacations Just So. No one knows where he is half the time. Treats his assistant like she's made of gold.

JD: bb lawyer. Asks the assistants what to do at least three times a day. They think he's adorable. Always happy to help draft a brief or research memo or dig into precedents, which everyone else really appreciates. Will panic about filing and serving deadlines even after he's told that is not entirely his responsibility and only some of them are real. Judges intimidate him and the other lawyers pointing out that Judge Travis used to work here does nothing to ease the fear.

Nathan: One of the few truly organized lawyers in the office. Cleanest desk, his files are actually correctly alphabetized, and is the most prompt about filing withdrawals and closing files. Does his own time entries and cc's his assistant on everything necessary and is very good about uploading files to the internal system. His calendar is colour-coded and has weekly reminders of deadlines. Has Never missed filing a Brief on time. Helps Buck with the Family stuff the most. Has been paid with artwork done by small children several times.

JD Dunne - Vin Tanner - Chris Larabee

JD is just so excited to have friends, and then they're guys he super super looks up to so he will crawl on broken glass for them before they can even give the word (they won't, they weren't going to, that's dangerous JD, but here we are. Filled with glass and covered in blood. Again.)

Ezra keeps everyone at arms length for the Longest Time because as much as JD is 'Friends!!!' Ezra is 'define this friends you speak of.' He will keep them at a distance long after it is reasonable to do so. Like 'seen each other delirious, covered in fire ants, drunk off their skulls, helped them come down off a bad LSD trip and I'm the beneficiary of your life insurance' and he still refuses to give them his middle name. This man is all boundaries and no idea what to do about them after they've come down.

Buck bless him is bit of a steamroller. He's very perceptive but he is also Buck, affectionate and a bit brash, and he has no idea how many walls these dudes have. And he very much did let Chris ride roughshod over him for we're not sure how long after the fire so self-sacrifice is something he's a little too familiar with.

Vin is a skittish cat. He just doesn't engage with anything he's not cool with. Which works, but not forever. Not when these are your friends. And he is absolutely a 'you violated a boundary I never hinted at and you could not know was A Thing so I vanished into the ether for 3-6 business days' dude, and has no concept of the freaking out this creates. He also does not really want to discuss the whole incident after the fact, which is Excellent Coping and Totally Helpful.

Nathan can and will work himself to the bone keeping people alive, even when they hate him. It's a problem! It's very Aragorn 'if by my life or death I can protect heal you I will.' He literally cannot say no if someone's hurt. Hippocrates wishes.

Chris is also Many Boundaries, Little Care. You know damn well as soon as you step on one of his personal land mines. Will he discuss this like an adult? Absolutely not. He also doesn't particularly care about other peoples feelings when things come to a boil, he's here to keep people alive and everything else kind of falls away, and he's not great at dealing with the fallout after the fact.

WIP: some draft panel closeups from page 3 of the comic; test color ref sheet with desaturated version (looks like I have to adjust colors for Mr. Favor! not sure if coloring will work but I have to give it a shot eventually; hats are floating to show hair and not because they are the targets of an impromptu trick-shooting competition).

@anintelligentoctopus Thank you! I was eyeballing the (relative) colors in my ref sheet based on the "family photo shoot" (below left). Is that the one you had in mind? I started thinking about colors way too late, though, so the shirt I actually had in mind for Pete when I drafted the comic wasn't the full button-up shirt with the graph check pattern, but a solid-color half-button work shirt (below right). Just based on what I can tell from the episodes, I think he may have had a lighter version of it in S1/2 and a darker version in some later season (possibly the red one in the picture below?) - but it's just hard for me to tell from the black-and-white episodes.

I kind of split the difference in design and gave Pete an ambiguously reddish-brownish-purplish half-placket shirt in the end (full final comic here!):

The Original Sassy Seven+Petra

Chris Adams is Bisexual. and has had sex with Harry at least once. He had a slight romantic relationship with Britt but it was more soft flirtation than anything physical. Of course he and Vin are a couple of marrieds

Britt is Ace. which is why Chris and him did not last long. He and Lee are a couple (I’m not sure if I got that from fic or from canon I just don’t know and I don’t care cause it’s perfect)

Lee is a gay southern belle. he just seems like he is an old queen who has a wonderful relationship with his husband, Britt. and goes to the same gay bar for about 20 years and but will gleefully hit on straighties who try to take over the bar

Harry is like straight but has sex with men HE IS ANCIENT ROMAN. that’s his sexuality I don’t know how else to describe it. But whatever he and Chris have it’s weird and there is not an English word for it (that I know of)

Vin is complicated like he probably wouldn’t have a word for it but he isn’t interested in women that much. But he and Chris are married

O’Reilly is straight like he’s a divorced dad who wears socks and sandals and has a lot of gay friends (that he didn’t know were gay until later)

Chico is very straight and hates his Bisexual wife Petra

Petra is bisexual and does have a girlfriend (they are very off and on and only stop dating after she and Chico get married but they stay friends)

The Boys+Mary,Inez, Raine, Casey and Sarah

Chris Larabee is bisexual. He, Buck, and Sarah were in a poly relationship for about 7 years, he and Buck broke up for good a few months after the fire. Chris and Vin are in love and married (it took a bit for it to take cause both of them wouldn’t know how to deal with those kinds of emotions).

Buck is pansexual (look labels don’t matter Buck will Flirt, Fuck, and Fist anyone who will have him) he and Chris were a slight item during the war but honestly that was just the war talking and didn’t actually have the love talk until Sarah was in the picture.

Ezra is Ace and genderqueer. That dress came somewhere and it came from his stuff. they will use all the pronouns. Honestly I do ship Vin and Ezra but like my otp is Chris/Vin sooooo uh yeah it is difficult

Vin is non-binary but uses male pronouns but he is still non-binary. Like I said he and Chris are married and I could see he and Ezra having a fling before Vin and Chris were a thing.

Nathan is straight but can admire the male body enough that he can question himself (ATF Nathan kissed a man in college because he honestly was curious, he didn’t hate it but it didn’t feel right)

Josiah is Demi and will fall in love with men and women (India definitely opened many doors for him) but he needs to be mentally stimulated by his company (like when he fell in love with a demon aka Maude)

JD is trans and Straight. You can rip the trans headcanon out of my cold dead hands because why else would he never contact anyone from Boston and go to the west without any plans.

Inez is a lez she will steal your wife and local news women

Mary is bi but didn’t know until her husband died (she and Terry would have been an amazing couple) but more importantly she and Inez settle down and become Gal pals

Raine is straightish kinda in the same boat as Nathan

Casey is bi and she and JD had a very long conversation about how she fell in love with JD when she believed he was full man and just because he was born differently doesn’t mean she sees him as such (terfs are not welcome on this blog)

Sarah is queer she’s kissed men she’s kissed women, she’s kissed both at the same time she’s queer

Sam probably is straight but like I could see him on the aro or Ace spectrum

Faraday is like pretty fluid like he isn’t straight and has had relations with men and women. He and Vasquez may hate each other but it’s mostly because they want to jump each other bones

Vasquez is fairly close to the vest he doesn’t really do the whole having label things. But he is Bi. And he and Faraday are in love
