“the story was about sacrifice, and what we knew with the sacrifice in the last film, the movie had no teeth without it. without some loss. and ethan in all of the most effective mission impossible movies, suffers loss. it’s his team, in one. it’s lindsay, in three….the secretary dies, in ghost protocol. hunley dies, in fallout. there is always loss. it’s always somebody’s turn. there were people really angrily reacting that the sacrifice in dead reckoning was not the one that they wanted. and some of those people were even pointing and saying ‘why couldn’t it be someone else.’ and i knew from the very beginning: it’s coming.”

Why are we so attached to the severities of the past? Why are we so proud of ourselves for having endured our fathers and our mothers, the fireless days and the meatless days, the cold winters and the sharp tongues? It’s not as if we had a choice.
