For some reason I keep putting this off...as if once I write my reactions to this journey of self-discovery and growth the reality that it's actually over will set in. However, when I take a step back and look at that statement I realize it couldn't be more false. The experiences I've had and the friends I've made over the past five months were invaluable. I will take them with me as I continue my journey and welcome even newer challenges.
I've only been in Kentucky for a week now and I already have the aching feeling that I left a piece of me back in England. When people here ask me how my trip was or to explain how it affected me I'm at a loss for words. It's hard to explain to them in the short answer they're looking for--the many challenges I overcame, the amazing adventures I had, the unforgettable people who shaped my experience, the culture I grew to love and appreciate. My relationship with God has also been strengthened. He forced me to rely on my faith and trust Him in unforeseeable circumstances.
I'll admit to being homesick (quite often), but that didn't hold me back from enjoying my time away to the fullest. It just served as a constant reminder of all the people I love and whom I could look forward to telling all about my adventures once I returned home. Leaving each place was truly bittersweet. It's an odd feeling missing people so much in one country, but also being in love with another country, knowing that they're separated by an expensive 8+ hour plane journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Yikes! BUT I have future visits to look forward to.
Alexis told me of someone she met in Scotland who always had one rule when travelling. He made sure to leave at least one thing unseen or one adventure unfulfilled so that he could put it on his list of things still to do, thus, ensuring that he would have to come back. I definitely took his advice as there is so SO much more to see in this world. I barely explored even half of England. I also don't want the relationships I made abroad to just fade away. Skype, Facebook, and Snapchat can only help so much. Therefore, I MUST return sometime! :-)
I can confidently say studying in the UK this past semester was the best experience of my life so far. I was blessed to be able to explore three different countries during my time and even experienced a totally different schooling environment. I reached out of my comfort zone and unexpectedly grew in so many ways. I am so thankful for this opportunity!
