regina's heart STUTTERED , once . . . twice . . . all because janis was playing with fire and , impossibly , she loved every RECKLESS lick of the flame , the ache in her body wasn't coy or accidental , it was low , insistent hunger for the artist to take DELIGHT in her and her body . to make a mess of her in the best possible way . janis was supposed to just be the delicious secret stashed in closets and late-night texts in code , but there was an entire , electric history between them . years of glances that felt like small betrayals of childhood , of janis' deliberate defiance that sent jolts STRAIGHT to regina's ribs when she commanded the cafeteria . memories of their last private moment still bloomed purple and tender on her inner thighs and breasts , a reminder of their fun and electricity . And yet something about the risk sets fire to her blood. All she can do is smirk at Regina’s impatience. The low groan Regina lets out is proof of that, sending a thrill straight through her. At this point, there’s no question in Janis’ mind. If Regina is going to take this risk, Janis will not stop her. She picks up her bag, curious as to what Regina means when she suggests she might not be back. But her mind goes blank at the first sensation of Regina’s lips and teeth on her ear. “You never have to question whether or not I’ll bite you, princess.” She knows what’s she’s doing. She knows what words amp up the girl in front of her, to charge the space between them even more. “You better get moving,” she urges, getting up from her seat, “before someone looks our way.”

regina had almost had ENOUGH of the silence , enough of pretending the past still didn't bleed beneath their smiles and laughter . beneath the happiness they had found with one another . the wound between them hadn't closed ; it pulsed quietly , a bruise beneath the silk of their love , something raw that time refused to entirely numb . ignoring it , ignoring regina's behavior in school , at the art show , at the arcade , it only made the pain grow teeth , something that clung and FESTERED like an infection no antibiotic could touch . only paitence and WORK . her breath came shallow , the kind of fragile inhale that carried both fear and hope , her pulse fluttering beneath skin as PALE as moonlight . what if this conversation was the STORM that finally broke them ? or worse . . . what if this was her own subconscious attempt to sabotage something good . to make janis so angry that she would leave before regina had to risk being loved for real ? the thoughts tangled and twisted until janis' lips found hers , a kiss like a match struck in the dark . for a fleeting second , it silenced everything . " we've been fine , but , kai . . . " she breathed , smiling helplessly at the closeness before pulling back . shaking her head just enough to send her hair shifting like golden sunrays . " i don't want this to sit in a box forever , we need to talk about it . "

Janis feels Regina relax under her kiss and for that moment, she believes she’s dodged a bullet. They can just sit here and kiss and be content. Doesn’t that sound lovely? But that’s not how things work out. Because life is not that easy. Life requires tension and confrontation sometimes and this is one of those times. And for once, Janis is the one actively avoiding it. “Why can’t we just move forward? We’re happy. I like us happy.” She doesn’t know why she’s running. She knows the healthy thing is just to talk things out. And usually, Janis is not one to fear the truth and being honest. But right now? What if she hurts Regina? She’s already been emotionally wounded irreparably. Janis doesn’t want to add on to the pile. They’re supposed to be happy here.

Her brow furrows at the question as she tries to imagine the hypothetical. “What? Like Damian and I hanging out with Regina and her Plastics?” Sure, the school had come together tonight. The cliques hadn’t mattered. The invisible barriers between them had dropped. But did that mean they’d stay that way come Monday morning? There’s a phantom feeling across her thigh and lower back and hip, the memory of Regina pulling her into her lap, of her reaching into her jacket and holding onto her. They’ll both probably pretend it never happened on Monday. “Not sure about all that, but man, Regina was high as fuck, wasn’t she? She should be drugged more.”

" i know i did . . . " her voice was flat , almost clipped as regina stared down at her feet . she was pressing them into the SAND like she could bury the guilt that sat in her chest . they were alone , finally , and for some reason , some terrible instinct , she thought it would be smart to bring up the one thing they'd BOTH been pretending never happened . the fact that she hurt Janis , worse than ever before . they had danced around this topic for the entire vacation , dodging the truth like it was contagious , trying to build something new on top of everything regina had wrecked . she had been awful that day at the gallery , for janis' art show . classic regina george , right ? meanest of the mean girls , tearing things apart before they could tear her . all because if janis was so far removed from her , liz wouldn't hurt her . but liz was gone now , but the trauma and wreckage wasn't . " janis . . . kai . . . we need to . we need to heal . " the words felt strange coming out , too soft for her , too honest . maybe it was selfish to want this , to fix something she'd broken , the want for it . but she did . and she hoped , somewhere deep down that janis did too . 

Janis is a strange type of non-confrontational. If she wants to hurt you, she will. With very little hesitance. That’s never a confrontation she’s afraid of. But when she’s the one who’s hurt? She’ll avoid it like a plague. There’s a reason she stopped talking about what happened between her and Regina when they were kids. It hurt too much and it wasn’t something she was willing to confront unless you were her therapist dragging it out of her. The same applies to this. She would much prefer not talking about how badly Regina hurt her and why it hurt so badly… again. But Regina’s not the only one with trauma and baggage from the past semester. Janis just doesn’t feel like hers is worth the energy. “We’re fine. Have we not been fine the last few weeks?” She grabs Regina’s hands and leans over, kissing her. An easy-to-spot distraction. “I’d say we’re more than fine actually.”

regina can't help but the laugh that spills from her lips the moment janis hisses at her , it wasn't sharp or posessive , but PREDICATBLE . of course she is reminding her to be quiet , regina had made it quite clear that no one could know . their little secret has lived in the shadows for months , in janitor closest that smelt like bleach and SIN , and in regina's bedroom when her parents are gone on yet another pointless trip to find themselves in nights of wine and bad decisions . her eyes roll , slow and deliberate , as she props her hands on the desk . perfectly manicured nails tap lazily in a rhythm reminisent of nothing against the wood . the library is humming in emptiness , just the two of them and a few clueless freshman buried in textbooks , too naive to notice the electricity twisting in the air . " oh please , imi'ike ," she drawls, voice soft but dripping with that signature venom-laced amusement , " no one . is going to hear . " emphasis added , dramatic pauses not so dramatic for regina george . she leans forward , chanel no. 5 in the air mixed with something sweet and dangerous as her arms fold inward , pressing her chest up just enough to hopefully make janis' breath hitch with her clevage threatening to spill out . " no one in here will even know what's going on , " regina murmurs , a smirk ghosting her lips before her tone drops , low and hungry . " but i didn't lie , janis . i still want to bite that pretty lip of yours . "

Everything about Regina George is intoxicating. She’s not even tapping a specific rhythm and even that’s intoxicating. She draws Janis in like a moth to a flame. Every time, without fail. And the artist isn’t sure why. Even if she’s fine with the discretion, there’s no part of Janis that should be okay with being Regina’s dirty little secret, just because she’s afraid of the school finding out she likes girls. But every make out session in a janitor’s closet, every hickey hidden under the blonde’s clothes, every finger between Regina’s thighs is worth being the popular girl’s shameful secret. Besides, Janis is having fun and getting all the sex she could possibly want from the most wanted girl in school. She could do worse. “Guess you’ll have to come get it,” she challenges. She recognizes that tone of voice on Regina. The girl has an itch she needs scratched. Now. And they both know Janis is the only person who can scratch just right.
