ââ´ syn: "you can't seem to hold my heart close to you." â the cleaners, including fu, look for a polished fabric store in the heart of canvas city and seek assistance from the cleaners' rather absent member.
"who exactly is it that we're meeting, anyway?" guita curiously questioned, eyes preoccupied by canvas town's layers of graffiti. the city was always busier during the day than after the sun dipped below the horizon. rudo, especially, was curious about who enjin planned to visit. he seemed to meet someone new every day.
the inquiry seemed to tickle enjin's funny bone. amusement colored his voice as he replied. "they're a fellow cleaner. prefers to help us from the sidelines." it was a half-truth. hell, you hadn't contributed to the organization since your big tantrum. still, you remained a member. "their jinki can help us stand like an iron wall against the raiders."
"hey, look out for a building with a biiig button!" enjin called out over his shoulder, swinging his jinki over the joint connecting his arm to his body. itâd be a lie to say he wasnât at least a little nervous to see you again. he hadnât visited the shop in months, and he'd a doubt in his gut that another cleaner had stopped by. the thought made him scruff at his neck.
he wasnât the only one feeling uneasy. even fu, who had been quietly trailing behind, began to fidget. not that he had anywhere better to be. the ex-raider seemed to have some vague idea of what last night had meant. "like that one?" the scrawny boy outstretched his arm and pointed to what looked like a fabric store, an odd little place that stood out with its freshly painted walls and polished windows. perched above the entrance was a giant brown button.
everyoneâs gaze followed his gesture.
there it was. unmistakable. "woah!"
a small part of enjin had hoped, as bad as it sounded, that maybe they wouldnât find the store. not that he didn't want to see you. with a stiff breath, he motioned for the others to follow. "come on."
buro, ever the observant one, noticed enjin's shift in demeanor. it was always hard to tell what that man was thinking. maybe you were someone important to him. either way, the moment they stopped in front of the shop, team childâs leader halted. his gesture raised a few brows. "should i stay outside with the kids?"
enjinâs gaze was fixed on the door handle. slowly, he leaned his umbrella against the wall. the man had a firm belief in the trustworthiness of the other cleaner to keep his jinki safe. "yeah, it's stuffed in there." well, from what he remembered. his eyes moved to the sphereite. "this oneâs coming with me."
he motioned for rudo to follow him with a nod, and the two stepped inside. enjin was right. the place was crammed. he never understood how you could work in this environment, but hey, to each their own. the bell above the door gave a soft ring as they entered, announcing their presence. "in a minute!" your voice called out. enjin winced.
from what rudo could gather, you ran a fabric store. but it also felt like walking through a maze, with how much stuff there was. fabrics, buttons, zippers, patterns. you had it all, and you took pride in that. too lilyâs latest single played faintly from somewhere in the clutter.
as they navigated the tight aisles, enjinâs hand found rudoâs shoulder to guide him along. his calm expression masked a flicker of anxiety. heâd visited this shop so many times, he practically knew it like the back of his hand. the corner of his lip twitched ever so slightly as you finally came into view.
your face twisted in pure shock and... was that disgust? "enjin," you dragged out, your nose wrinkling. if it werenât for the unfamiliar and rather young face beside him, only heaven knows what you mightâve done. reluctantly easing the tension in your shoulders, you leaned your hip against the work table where your sewing machine sat.
enjin immediately caught the subtle tremble in your voice. he knew you were forcing yourself to sound confident, even if speaking softly was second nature to you. you were putting up a front in front of a stranger. your on-the-qui-vive eyes were quick to scan rudo and his cleaner badge. youâd never seen him before. then again, you rarely interacted with the cleaners back at hq except for one.
enjinâs hand left rudoâs shoulder and instinctively reached for his umbrella, only to remember heâd left it outside. he wiped his hand down the material of his pants to cover the motion. he could tell from the look on your face that small talk wasnât welcome, so he cut to the chase. "meet rudo. don't know if you heard, but he's a new addition to the cleaners."
unfortunately, even after hearing that, your stern gaze didnât waver as it met red eyes. "itâs nice to meet you, rudo," you said. and in turn, the boy reciprocated the greeting. the two of you were similar in a way, enjin realized. sheepish when conversing with strangers, even if you masked it behind a cold, biting front.
"the raiders have been chewing us up and spitting us out lately," enjin began. he found his composure quickly. the seriousness in his tone didnât go unnoticed by the two other cleaners in the otherwise empty shop. at the mention of the raiders, your eyes drifted elsewhere, and a quiet sigh escaped through your nose.
"especially for rudo, here." raiders. the name stirred something. the crease between your brows deepened. "i know your jinki could be a huge help, button." before he could continue, he inhaled sharply, an involuntary response. the motion pulled your attention back to him. there it was. that squeeze in his chest. the ache that always came when he looked at you for too long. guilt.
"we could use your help," he said, more quietly this time. he meant your jinki. "he could use your help." he gestured to rudo.
the white-haired boy still hadnât figured out what your jinki was. ever the curious type, his eyes wandered the compact space you called your own. on the table, a machine held a half-finished piece of clothing. he couldnât make out what the tag said, but the logo matched the button outside your shopâ
"no." your voice cut through his thoughts.
enjinâs breath caught at the sound of your refusal. "enjin, iâm not helping the cleaners right now. canât you see i have a business to run?" you knew you were being bitter, especially to the man who had introduced you to the cleaners. the man who had once helped you back onto your feet. it was a pitiful excuse, and you knew it.
before you could turn your back to him, the man retaliated. "is this all because of august?" his name made your head lift just slightly. "no, seriously, you're letting your estrangement with him get in the way of your job?" your jaw tensed. you barked back without hesitation, locking eyes with him. "i said i wouldnât help, didnât i? thatâs a sign to leave."
your voice was quick to rise, and enjin quickly held back the words that lay on the tip of his tongue.
enjin exhaled through his nose. "i'm not here to argue, button."
another beat of silence. this one heavier.
"come, rudo," enjin declared, already moving to navigate back to the door.
rudo gave you one last glance before offering a hesitant bow of his head. "thank you anyway," he said, polite despite the awkwardness. you didnât answer. the bell jingled again as the door closed behind them.
