i'm AWARE this is a stupid hill to die on, but like. trope vs theme vs clichΓ© vs motif vs archetype MATTERS. it matters to Me and i will die on this hill no matter how much others decide it's pointless. words mean things
trope: 1) the use of figurative language for artistic effect; includes allegories, analogies, hyperbole, & metaphors, among others. 2) commonly reoccurring literary devices, motifs, or clichΓ©s. Includes things like the medieval fantasy setting, the Dark Lord, enemies-to-lovers, and the Chosen One.
theme: the reoccurring idea or subject in a work of art. Death, life, rebirth, change, love, what it means to be human, the definition of family, the effects of war, etc.
clichΓ©: an element of an artistic work that has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, even becoming annoying or irritating. (Most clichΓ©s are tropes but not all tropes are clichΓ©s.)
motif: a distinctive repeating feature or idea, such as the green light in The Great Gatsby. May overlap with tropes and is often used to further explore the theme.
archetype: a constantly-recurring symbol or motif; it refers to the recurrence of characters or ideas sharing similar traits throughout various, seemingly unrelated cases in classic storytelling. E.g. rags to riches, the wise old mentor. Again may overlap with tropes, clichΓ©s, and motifs, but they're not the exact same thing.
it really pisses me off when adults sit there and drill it into kidsβ heads that their youth is fleeting and tell them things like βenjoy your childhood while it lasts because this is the best itβs gonna getβ. why are you telling children that adulthood is the worst thing they can experience? seriously what the fuck is wrong with you, why are you trying to make them feel like growing up is a fate worse than death? trying to convince them their life is over before it even begins? iβm tired of that shit. because tell my why my 12 year old cousin told me when she turns 30 sheβll be so depressed sheβs just gonna cry all the time. what the fuck. kids donβt need to hear that their already stressful and overwhelming lives are never going to get better, that the abuse and lack of autonomy they face is apparently the highlight of their lives. they need to hear about adults who are happy to be alive and happy to have made it to their age. they need to know that growing up rules, itβs a gift and life does not have to suck for them, that they have a future thatβs worth sticking around for. this rhetoric is so damaging mentally and iβm about to start hitting the adults who parrot it. iβm sorry you hate your life but you donβt get to dump your issues on these kids. donβt piss me off and leave these babies alone!

Strategy - Violet Fiend vs Valley Master (they are both definitely cheating..)
something crazy
You wouldnβt think that flamingoes are extremophiles just from looking at them. Itβs like somebody tried to build the vertebrate equivalent of that fungus that lives inside nuclear reactors, and ended up with a gangly pink dinosaur with a spoon for a face.
For everyone in the comments asking how flamingos are extremophiles:
Flamingos can survive in low oxygen, high altitude, high temperatures, low temperatures, high alkaline, they can and will drink boiling water and they can be completely frozen at night and still get up the next morning
Donβt fuck with flamingos
β¦.. Didnβt know most of that
Huhβ¦ so thatβs why zoos donβt put them somewhere warm during winter.
Oh yeah, this leaves out what I *did* know about themβthey can also survive hypersalinity. That is, water so salty it kills practically everything elseβwater so salty it burns your skin.
American flamingos just drink that shit
(animal death) this is a real undoctored photograph (*though the body was stood up for the shot) of a dead flamingo on the surface of lake natron, a lake so salty and so alkaline that itβs naturally carbonated like soda and would eat through your stomach lining if you drank from it.
When this photo went viral years ago, most people assumed this poor flamingo must have been killed by the lake.
It is actually the lake where 75% of its global population are hatched. This is a photo from the same lake:
Some species of flamingo actually subsist almost entirely on a diet of bacteria! In other words, there is a species of dinosaur that eats only bacteria and lives in lakes so toxic they would kill almost anything elseβand it is best known to the average person as a kitschy lawn decoration.

RATING: RELIABLE
Flamingos can survive in high altitudes, hypersaline conditions, and caustic lakes.
Source: βAll flamingo species have evolved to live in some of the planetβs most extreme wetlands, like caustic βsoda lakesβ, hypersaline lagoons or high-altitude salt flats.β
They can survive water so alkaline it burns human skin.
Source: βMore than a million lesser flamingos breed in Tanzaniaβs Lake Natron, for instance, a lake fed by hot springs with water so alkaline that it can strip away human skin (one pioneering flamingo researcher named Leslie Brown spent months in Nairobi General Hospital after burning his legs wading out to observe where the birds nested).β
They can drink water at near-boiling temperatures.
Source: βThey can drink water at near boiling point to collect freshwater from springs and geysers at lake edges. If no freshwater is available, flamingos can use glands in their head that remove salt, draining it out from their nasal cavity.β
The lakes they inhabit can freeze overnight, and the flamingos can survive once it thaws in the morning.
Source: βThe birds may seem to epitomize the tropics, but they also live in the Andes, 15,000 feet above sea level, where they rest on lakes that freeze around them overnight.
βYouβll see them sitting there like snowballs, frozen on ice,β Dr. Arengo said. βAnd as the temperature warms up, they thaw out, fluff themselves up and go about their business.ββ
The photo is indeed from Lake Natron, taken by photographer Nick Brandt. The content of the lake chemically preserves animal corpses that die there. You can see more photos of this here.
It is also true that 75% of Lesser Flamingos are hatches on Lake Natron.
Source: βThe lakeβs landscape is surreal and deadlyβand made even more bizarre by the fact that itβs the place where nearly 75 percent of the worldβs lesser flamingos are born.β
Some species of Flamingo eat cyanobacteria or algae.
Source: βFlamingos have very specialised diets. And their food is responsible for their famous pink colouration. The two species in Planet Earth II eat a lot of floating microscopic algae, which contains carotenoid pigments, the same types of chemical that make carrots orange. These pigments turn their feathers pink, orange and red β without them, flamingos would be white.β

[recommending something i sincerely love] ok so the thing about it is it kinda sucks
the girls are fighting
maybe i like my tech a little bit inconvenient
maybe i like pulling out my debit card instead of using apple pay. maybe i like untangling my wired headphones. maybe i like typing something into the search bar instead of using siri or whatever. maybe i like curating my own social media feeds over an algorithm. i just donβt think everything has to be perfectly streamlined and efficient i like it when things feel tethered to the real world.
this has been in my drafts forever because I have a huge rant for it that I haven't had the energy to type out, but I think I finally do
There is one issue with this whole thing and that is: none of these things that tech bros are advertising are actually inconvenient, and in most cases they're the exact opposite.
Setting up apple pay (in my experience) is a hassle, and is a security vulnerability (the more companies directly connected to your bank, the more likely it is to get hacked), all for what? So you can take 3 less seconds taking out and swiping/inserting a card?
Untangling wired headphones? A hassle sure. Not as much of a hassle as losing only one ear pod, or one ear pod consistently dying faster than the other, or pairing issues, or worse sound quality at a higher price because it's wireless. How is any of that more convenient? It's like the same amount of convenience
Or how about siri and google always missing hearing what you say? Censoring swears despite being an adult? Going off when you don't say it's name?
Having algorithms currate your own feed leading to echo chambers, and radicalization pipelines, and making it harder to find the stuff you want, with yts new horrible search algorithm etc etc
None of these are more convenient, they're the same amount or worse. But guess what? They make money. So they're sold as convenient.
Next time you see a product that advertises that it's "convenient" ask for a moment what convenience are you actually getting? And is it comproable to that you already have?
