He is the looming angel Jack sees in his dreams, a face of shadows and fingers capped with gleaming claws that beckon. His touch is ice--no, more than that. The complete absence of warmth, stripped of life and all its trappings to better suit what he has become.
He is death, robed in black and with a second face of polished bone layered over the abyss underneath, yawning and darker than anything he's ever seen. The man he once was is no more, and Jack has known this for quite some time now.
He is splendor in night-velvet, moving like the inescapable creep of fog as he prowls, drifts closer, the only clearly visible shapes to him being his mask and the talons that do far more than simply catch the light. They inhale it, turning it into a weapon better suited to his body--the rays that bounce off them are more than enough to confuse his visor, and Jack knows he's not the one the odds are leaning toward. But he stands his ground and lets him come, staring up at the face of death like it was an old friend.
It was. The man may be gone, but the shape remained, almost as a mockery of the life that so forcefully flowed through him. There was no blood, no heartbeat that he knew of in this shell of Gabriel, and Jack looks on, not once closing his eyes.
Reaper is here. He's crouched before him in a movement that seemed more at home in a curl of smoke than a human body--but then again, what is before him isn't quite human anymore, is he?
The pain in his side has dulled to a throbbing ache, numbness creeping into his ribs and making them its home. Jack's going to bleed out at this rate, and his visor's already getting static flickers from the slowing feedback. He's silent as Reaper reaches out to him, but he can feel a pull--it's as inexorable as the tides, and he's in no state to resist. One more exhale, and as his visor begins to short out in earnest, he can feel it more than he can see it--the red glow, trickling from him into Reaper's waiting palm.
In the last glimpse he gets before it all fades to black, Jack swears he can see wings unfurl behind him, as towering and foreboding as an oncoming storm. His head lolls back, the light from his visor going dark--but he feels the pressure of something pressing into his chest, hear the faint rustle of movement that preceded it. Reaper's claws are digging into him, albeit lightly; more as a reminder of their presence than anything else, Jack guesses. The voice that rumbles through his chest sounds as if it's coming from many voices all at once, a chorus that threatens to choke his thoughts with its sheer power.

It’s nightfall in Arizona, and they’re moving into another temporary outpost. Just for a few weeks, if his intel’s correct; it was going to be a simple op, and they’d be back to one of the watchpoints ASAP. In the meantime, Gabe’s put on some music to speed along the unpacking process–at first, Jack can’t quite make out what it is from down the hall, but as he gets closer, the tune begins to make itself clear. It’s not the man’s usual fare by any means; oddly enough, it’s one of his own recordings. He can hear the muffled curse and confusion already being voiced, and he raps his knuckles against the door as a quick warning before slipping inside.
“Jack. What’s th–” “Sorry, that’s–that’s one of mine. Guess we got a box mixed up when we were pickin’ our stuff out of everything.” “You actually listen to this shit?” Reyes cocks an eyebrow at him, and Jack gives a quiet snort in response, plucking the barely-labeled case from his hands. He’d worn the marker off the front ages ago, and the disc itself was just as battered–it was a wonder the damn thing still played at all, but Jack was more than happy to chalk it up to luck and leave it at that. Either that, or whatever divine force existed had good taste in music, and decided to let the little disc continue to crank out its tunes for as long as was physically possible. “What, you’ve never heard ELO before? I mean–it’s old as hell, sure, but it’s a classic!” Judging by the look he was getting, Gabe wasn’t terribly convinced of the quality. He’d just have to change that, wouldn’t he? Luckily enough, he had something up his sleeve–or…well, t-shirt. It was the thought that counted.
“Come on. Listen to it for two minutes and just try to tell me the lyrics do nothin’ for you.” “Oh, but I can. And I will. Just watch me.” “You’re not even giving it a shot!” Jack flashes that trademark Morrison grin–the one he knows Reyes falls for every time. He doesn’t falter when the man rolls his eyes–instead, he reaches over and turns the volume up, lightly tossing the case down next to the radio. Jeff Lynne’s voice has already added its input, and Jack’s pleased to note that he caught the song at a perfect time for his next trick. On the plus side, he’d had plenty of time to practice for stupid shit like this with all those drives–
I will love you tonight– “You can’t be serious. You’re not serious.” Jack’s already started what is…honestly a pathetic attempt at single-person slowdancing, and he answers with a vigorous nod, taking another step closer to Reyes. And I will stay by your side– “Oh, I’m more than serious. You’ve got about two seconds to get ready!” There’s a split second of realization on Gabriel’s face as he puts two and two together, and Jack knows that he’s figured out what’s going to happen next. He can’t help but laugh at the sight–how often did he catch Reyes off-guard, after all? “Morrison, don’t you dare–” The protests fall on deaf ears, and Jack’s already singing along before Gabe can finish. “Lovin’ you, I’m feelin’ midnight blue– You’re lucky I came in at the end of a verse, but that’s not stopping me! We’ve got a ‘couple minutes left in this song, and I’m gonna keep going!” Reyes has a hand over his face, but Jack can barely see the tiniest edges of a smile in spite of his best efforts. That’s all the encouragement he needs, and when the vocals come in again, he’s significantly louder than before, emboldened by the response.
“Can’t you feel the love that I’m offering you?” He creeps a little closer to Gabe, earning an exasperated sigh as he continued to show no signs of stopping. Jack’s getting a kick out of this–there’s no doubt about that. “Can’t you see how it’s meant to be?” “Can’t you hear the words that I’m saying to you?” “Can’t you believe like I believe?” “It’s only one and one it’s true, still I see you in midnight blue–”
Jack’s close enough to rest his hands on Reyes’ shoulders, and he does so gladly, lopsided grin drawing a chuckle from the soldier before him. He’s entirely aware that he’s probably made a damn fool out of himself with this whole stunt, but he couldn’t care less. The window’s open, and the warm nighttime air’s doing absolutely nothing to dampen his musical performance; oh well. If anybody cared to listen, all they’d hear was somebody getting way too into a hundred-year-old song.
“I see beautiful days–” “And I feel beautiful ways of loving you–” “Everything’s midnight blue…”
He’s leaned in more and more as the verse continued, and by the time he’s closed the paltry distance left between them, his voice is quiet–almost a whisper, the words half-sung with such reverence that they might as well be holy. Jack can feel Gabe’s warmth beneath his palms, and he’s so close to the man’s face–he studies every nick, every scar. It’s all familiar terrain, well-traveled by carefully-placed kisses in those intimate moments they’re able to steal for themselves. He presses a new kiss to Gabe’s lips, shifting to drape his arms over the soldier’s shoulders instead of just his hands; the hum of approval he gets back seals the deal.
“See, told you you’d like it.” “You cheated.” Gabe’s voice rumbles in his chest, and it makes Jack’s heart skip a beat–he offers a chuckle back, mirroring the subtle smile now openly on Gabriel’s face with one of his own. “You never said I couldn’t put on a show for a little extra incentive.”
The song continues playing, gradually fading out. When it stops, Jack fills the silence with his own hummed rendition, occasional breaks in the music to kiss Reyes whenever he can manage.
Years later, it’s nightfall in Dorado, and there’s no music to be found in the abandoned corridors he walks alone. He hums along quietly to the old song in his head, the notes far rougher than the last time he remembers singing them. It’s not the same, and the scratchy attempt doesn’t make it much longer than the chorus before he puts it out of its misery. When he lets the last note die out, he feels much more lonely than he did before.
