Officially Living the Dream!
I’m over the moon! Can’t believe that I have been chosen to take part in this amazing programme run by Inspiring Stories.
Things are moving so fast now. The challenge will be keeping on top of all the amazing opportunities that have presented themselves. Aside from this, I have A project for MOTAT, an exhibition for Summer in The Square as well as my grandparents arriving for my graduation all happening in December. That's not even to mention what I have to complete for University
It is so flippen exciting I am just going to have to be super organised.
Prototype Development
Today I added three strips all the way around and it made a huge difference. With six strips, we will have more than enough light even in an environment that isn’t completely dark.
It has been interesting to see how people interact with it so far. Everyone so far likes the instantaneously noticeable response and the amount of control they have of the colour with just their proximity.
I am beginning to think about how the actual enclosure will come together. That will be the next thing we need to prototype. This model is a great starting point for measurements that I can work from.
How Much Power?
Today we tested the power consumption of our LED’s and if we would be able to run them all from one Arduino. I was fairly confident about running them I was just not sure how much current they would need.
Pictured above we have over 130 LED’s connected to the Arduino, that is a little over the amount that we need for each triangle. When shining a solid colour through the LED’s they draw about 700 milliamps. When we tried shining white there we couldn't draw enough current to get them up to full brightness. We are going to need between 1 and 2 amps to be able to achieve that.
This got me thinking about how much current we could pass through our Teensy microcontroler that we are planning to use. I discovered that if we were to connect the power for the LED’s we would blow the 500 milliamp fuse that it has for safety.
So instead we will connect the LEDs directly to our 5V power supply. This will allow them to draw as much current as they need without affecting the Teensy.
Prototyping to Scale
Using the measurements that we had taken of the bridge, I built this prototype using cardboard and tape.
We are using some Neopixels LED strips connected to an Arduino to see how the light diffuses through the frosted acrylic sheet. It's a bit hard to tell what it will look like in the end as we only have one strip of LED’s rather than 3 all the way around. We will need to do some more testing tomorrow to see what effect this has.
We also tested the ultrasonic distance sensor and discovered that even with two pointing directly at each other they don't interfere. In this test, we are just mapping the proximity to the sensor to the hue of the LED’s. In this case, all the LED’s are the same colour but because we are using Neopixels we have the ability to control each LED individually. This is will allow us to programme simple behaviors to begin with and expand the functionality later down the track with an easy code update.
We uncovered an interesting flaw in our code through our testing. After a certain period of time, the distance sensor would seem to get ‘stuck’ and stop giving us values.
After some further investigation and debugging we discovered that the integer variable that we had been using to check against the internal time of the Arduino became a negative value after 32,767 milliseconds. This is due to the fact that the variable container stores a limited number of digits and overflows (goes back to the start; -32,768) when it reaches greater than the largest number. You can think of the number line going around in one continuous loop over and over.
The simple fix was to us an unsigned long instead. This much larger variable container will give us over 7 weeks before it would overflow. This got us thinking about the internal clock and what happened to it if you ran it for long enough. We discovered that the internal clock known as milis() also used an unsigned long and would overflow in the same timeframe. The great thing is that both of these variables would be reset once the Arduino is restarted. Not only will shutting off the device reset those variables but will also give the device a bit of a rest. Now we just have to figure out how that will work at MOTAT. Whether it has to be done manually or we can get it to do it automatically.

IP Monthly Meeting
For this project, we have been meeting each month for about 2-3 hours. This has been quite a drag, especially at the start. A lot of the time it just feels like we are wasting time. Most of the meeting is spent just getting everyone on the same page.
It has improved significantly since we split into teams and assigned team leads. At today's meeting, we gave an update and listening to everyone else it feels as though we are ahead of most other teams. It’s a bit annoying at this stage because we are waiting on others to progress.
Hopefully, things will pick up pace and we can keep on top of our deadlines.
Live The Dream
Just had a phone interview with someone from Inspiring Stories for a summer programme called Live The Dream. I felt like it went really well. I absolutely loved the process applying for this. The more I write or share my vision for Life Without Limits the clearer my vision becomes and the more determined I become to make it happen. You can find my application here
I am so excited to connect with more people and see where this all goes. I really believe that together we can make this world a better place.
Note To Self!
It is much better to do some writing in the morning before all the busyness and fatigue of the day sets in!
What a Night
At the Youth Engagement Session with Philanthropy New Zealand I saw some people that I had met thorough my talk at the Young Innovators Collective. Events like these are great to connect with people who are going places in the world. I want to surround myself with more people like this.
After this event I arranged to catch up with Nicole Lin who was also attending. She is really passionate about the using power of storytelling to empower people. We ended up tagging along with Sam Jeter and heading up to his office just around the corner. At the age of only 20 he is the founder Notifr.com - a web based feedback system for educators.
This was an awesome opportunity to ask questions and share my passions with both of these incredible people. We ended up hanging out until the early hours of the morning. There was just so much we could talk about. It was incredible to hear each of their stories. The insights I received from them are amazing.
The biggest thing I learnt was that no matter what happens if you get stuck in with your passions somehow it will work out. So be yourself and start doing something.
Sam gave me a long list of people that he would like to connect me with. It's incredible to see the contacts that he had made in such a short amount of time. I am so excited to start meeting more amazing people.
Generosity at the Core
Last night I went to a Youth Engagement Session with Philanthropy New Zealand. The event was centred around generosity and the role it plays in society. It was incredible to be in a room of like minded individuals to discuss this. How can we promote generosity? What could the world look like if we thought more of others? I strongly believe that it is our responsibility to help each other, after all we are in this together. Generosity isn't just something that makes us feel good. It's an important part of who we are as humans. The same areas in our brains light up when we win a prize or have sex as when we are generous. Most of the time when we think about generosity we think about giving money. Why do we put so much value in money? Isn't it just a means to get what we truly desire. What if instead we developed a culture where we became generous with our knowledge, resources or time. We are already beginning to see that with the open source community movement. I know for me that the value of the knowledge that I have gleaned from that movement has a much higher value than any amount of money. This is my vision for Life Without Limits. A community that allows people to be generous with what ever they have in their hands. I want us to be apart of something that is much larger than any individual but still values each and every individuals contribution. Value should be placed on personal impact. I want to tell the stories of how together we can create positive change.

Colab Lunchtime Lecture - Dr Oscar Tomico
Dr. Oscar Tomico is Assistant Professor of the Designing Quality in Interaction Research Group and part of Wearable Senses at Eindhoven University of Technology. Today we had the privilege of hearing about the amazing work that he has been doing.
Why don't we talk about technology in the same way we talk about fashion? How do we make the experience more personal?
Create a platform that allows the user to explore and adapt it to them.
It is important to understand the relation between the body and technology.
Use the body in the design process.
Test not only on yourself but on others too.
Don't try and do something that you are not good at. Get a team of experts. From the design of the actual project all the way to how you present it in the end. Have a clear area that each person is assigned to. Talk through the object itself rather than making it personal.
By taking an intimate more personal approach you can intuitively feel if it's right
The material should speak by itself.
Advice from Ollie
Had a fantastic catch up with the National Coordinator of Red Frogs New Zealand. Red Frogs is a support network that empowers young people to make positive life choices and become a voice of change within their culture. Today I had the privilege to talk to him about Life Without Limits and what it is like building a community.

staging option 1
staging option 2
From the 2D staging design, I modeled this to scale and in 3D. It was a good challenge to pick up solid works again since using it in my first year. Let’s just say I did a lot of googling to find answers.
This short clip really gives a good idea of what the staging setup will look and feel like from all around.
Participatory Playground
“Rather than delivering the same content to everyone, a participatory institution collects and shares diverse, personalized, and changing content co-produced with visitors.” - Nina Simon.
With the interactive playground it is important to meet people at their level. At the meeting on Monday, it was mentioned while the design team was presenting that we have a diverse target audience. In fact, there’s not really a target at all. It’s obvious that the visual design team need to think about this when they make the visual identity and everyone understands the challenge. However, there is also a challenge for us to make the participation with the audience multi-leveled and personalized.
In her book “The Participatory Museum”, Nina Simon addresses the issue of a never changing institution – “I’ve visited once and I have no reason to return.” She insists that there is a need for platforms that allow visitors to share in real-time and be comfortable doing it.
One thing that I have struggled with in the past is designing interaction that is inviting for the audience. While I always love to push people outside of their comfort zone, there needs to be a way of insisting that they do it, otherwise they won’t.
“The first step to personalizing cultural institutions is to take an audience-centered approach to the experiences offered.” We aren’t exactly an institution but this could apply to our project. We need to think about what the visitors might want to see as they enter the space and how they might find out more in ways that they want to access more. “Visitors come in the door knowing who they are, but they may not know what content is of greatest interest to them.”
http://www.participatorymuseum.org/preface/
The intention has always been to engage a wide range of people. This is why it is important to have multiple layers of interaction and points of connection to the project. Everyone will want a different kind of experience based on their background and past experiences and we need to cater for this.
Our transmedia strategy looks at the different platforms that we can connect and engage our diverse audience. Each platform targets a different group of people and tells a different part of the story.
Our focus is more specific to the playground that will be in the Aotea square and how the audience engages in that space. We need to do some user testing throughout the prototyping stages to gain a greater understanding of what the audience expects and the different ways that they would like to engage.

Designing the Oxygen 360 stage
This term my youth group (Oxygen Youth Church) are having a 360 stage for one of the nights. We generally do this once every year. I have taken this opportunity to do some design development for this event.
Firstly I measured all the staging equipment we currently have available for youth so that I could mock-up some new designs to scale.
It seems like it was just yesterday that I first was introduced to 3D scanning as a desktop production method used for 3D printing, yet over the past two years
