Elizabeth Short (July 29, 1924 – c. January 14–15, 1947), known posthumously as the "Black Dahlia," was brutally murdered in Los Angeles in January 1947. Her case remains one of the most infamous unsolved crimes in American history. On the morning of January 15, 1947, the 22 year old's mutilated body was discovered in a vacant lot in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Her corpse had been severed at the waist, completely drained of blood, and posed in a grotesque manner, leading the first witness to mistake it for a mannequin. The killer had inflicted a chilling "Glasgow smile" by slicing each corner of her mouth toward her ears, and her body had been meticulously cleaned, suggesting she was murdered elsewhere before being dumped. Despite an extensive investigation involving the LAPD and FBI, which generated over 150 suspects, no one was ever charged. The case captivated the nation and has since inspired countless books, films, and theories, cementing its place as a haunting symbol of postwar American crime lore.
