The problem with a lot of "romantic" plotlines in books written circa 1920-1990 is that they make it like this woman who is sweet and moral and wants a good husband for traditional husbandly stuff, and then have her fall irreconcilably in love with someone who has no respect for her, women in general, not even in the traditional she needs to be looked after way, it's like they see her (at least until near the end of the story) and women in general as disposable little objects which can occasionally be a nice entertainment, which fine, write about men like that , not a problem, the problem is her falling for someone who she obviously wouldn't like, like they have no interests in common, they don't want the same things, he's constantly an entire dick to her, and everyone around, so why does she love him?
