“Sorry, I don’t suppose you’d mind passing my that book would you please,” she pointed at a dark blue cloth bound book on the book shelve in front of the other person. 

“You have no idea where my thoughts are running to at the moment.“

“There’s a lot I want to know but first I have to focus on keeping control… Which may also take a hundred years or so?“

“Trust is such a strong word,” Garrett teased. 

She laughed, “Oh come on, I’m not that bad.”

“To run from a crime scene before giving your name and a statement? I’m afraid what that does it make you look suspicious,” Bess replied calmly. At face vaguely it had been the least eventful of her call outs that evening but meeting Dan had made her question everything. “And how did you get out of there so quickly? I turned around for a second and you were gone,”

Lyra nodded a little and shrugged, “I understand that, but I have my own reasons for deciding that I needed to leave.” It was more just not wanting to stand around more. She could have stayed, but hadn’t seen the reason. “An old trick that I am good at.”

“Kinda like a common law marriage but for immortals?“ Skylar asked. “Lyla mentioned mates a few times but I can’t really find anything useful on them. And I also haven’t asked since I didn’t know if its taboo or something.“

Lyra nodded, “Exactly. It’s not taboo at all, some mates get married and others might not. Is there something that you want to know?”

“I’ll have to ask Minsky if that’s true.“

  Lyra chuckled, “What don’t trust me?”

“Thanks.“

“You’re Bill’s wife, right?“ Skylar has seen Bill around more than she had Lyra. She didn’t know what to say to her and thought that Bill would be a safe conversation.

“Roman does what he wants, when he wants and he has thought you the act the same.“

“You don’t need to thank me for not shooting you,” Turning round to face the girl Bess leaned against her desk. “They’re still in the hospital but all signs point to them making a full recovery. Thank you for drawing my attention to them,” Bess studied the girl for a long moment, “You disappeared from the scene pretty quickly, do you want to tell me why?”

Lyra nodded, she still felt like she needed to. Or needed to thank her for believing her, she knew that it probably sounded crazy for her to say that she knew that there was someone in the back room when all there was around her was blood and signs of a break in. “You’re welcome. Well, seemed the best idea.”

“I’m fine. Thanks.“

“That’s because you learned shit restraint from a fuckboy monk.“ Garrett grumbled.

“You can definitely stay then,”

“I haven’t been cleared for duty,” she said, trying not to wince as she momentarily forgot her injuries and chose the wrong arm to pick up the files she was planning to take home with her. “I have to report back after I’ve had my follow up appointment in a few days,” 

Lyra was more than surprised when she saw the detective that she had run into the other night, she looked far worse off than she had when she had left her. “Wow. Um, I guess I wanted to thank you for not shooting me and ask if that person in the back room had been okay?”
