In the new Kiss of the Spider Woman adaptation, Valentín’s attempt to bring up Marcuse’s writings about gender being a social construct (and Molina’s immediate dismissal) is extremely funny when you consider that Manuel Puig cited Marcuse many times in his very lengthy footnotes throughout the original novel. It’s like Valentín gets briefly possessed by the spirit of Puig himself, meanwhile Molina is possessed by an exasperated reader who has repeatedly had to flip five or six pages forward to finish reading a single footnote and then flip backward again to continue the actual story.

i need you all to get more insane about kiss of the spider woman (2025) immediately. not only did they give us this beautiful queer story of embracing identity and discovering real, soul-changing love, but it is also just a good film. i don’t care that jlo’s wig is bad or that she can’t sing. movie isn’t about her. i care about valentín’s tenderness, about how he and molina figure out how to bridge the gaps between them. i am absolutely feral about the parallels between the kiss of the spider woman as molina recounts it and the lived experience she’s having. the movie was FINALLY explicitly trans and i love that. “molinita.” “we made it, my love.” AND “her name was molina.” god i will never be the same!!!
