Hey! was scrolling through the notes of that post critiquing fandom ettiquette as racist, and wanted to give you some jumping off resources for proactive research!
Racism Without Racists by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva is a first great stepping point of the basics- most people are not being racist on purpose, but that doesn't stop actions from Being racist, and it covers a lot of important lessons for how to Start learning antiracism. If you cannot afford to buy a copy, you can request it of your local library, or check it out on the internet archive!
CreatingBlackCharacters is a very useful blog on tumblr that has specific structured lessons, and she hosts a book club as well that can be followed along with or give you ideas on what to read next, and is geared specifically about writing Black characters and talking about antiblackness. She's also a great place to find Black artists and bloggers to follow on here. She has a VERY detailed and helpful syllabus!
CheckYourAsianBias and InsertSpanishHere are also peers in adjacent spaces- talking about racism and how to write characters from various cultures (that are Not monolithic), and providing FANTASTIC jumping off points of books to read in their posts and recommendations.
Overall, learning the history of racism, especially specific to where you live, is hugely beneficial for knowing what the minorities that live around you have had to know this whole time. History is interesting, and horrifying, and important to understand the world around you. It can also help you identify patterns and political tactics from people in charge, and give you more templates of resistance and organization against unjust action!
You don't have to learn it all in a day- it's impossible to internalize in just a day, especially if you are part of the politically dominant group in your area- But to start learning at all, to keep going, is VERY important! Good luck!!! I wish you the best. :]
thanks! I have read a lot of CreatingBlackCharacters' blog for my writing and found it to be very helpful I think I've read a bit of CheckYourAsianBias' as well.
the politically dominant thing is very true as well I live in an INCREDIBLY white area
