Timothy Ridout Wins Prestigious International Viola Competition
We are delighted to share the news that 20 year old Timothy Ridout, who gave his first Concerto performance - the Martinu - with Luton Symphony Orchestra in 2011, and played for several years prior to that in our viola section, has become the first British winner of the Lionel Tertis International Viola Concerto Competition held on the Isle of Man from 12th - 19th March 2016.
Currently a student at the Royal Academy of Music in London studying with Martin Outram, Timothy was born and raised in Luton, where he received viola tuition from Luton Music Service, first from Jonathan Griffiths and then from our Musical Director Dafydd Billinghurst. Upon his entry to the Royal Academy as a junior exhibitioner, Timothy studied with Jonathan Barritt.
Founded in 1980 and dedicated to British violist Lionel Tertis, the triennial competition, is open to violists of all nationalities up to the age of 30. This year's event attracted 90 entries from 25 countries, of whom 44 were chosen to compete in the live rounds. Timothy's victory has been likened by the British Viola Society to Andy Murray winning Wimbledon!
Timothy has previously won the inaugural Cecil Aronowitz International Viola Competition in October 2014 and was awarded second prize at the 2015 Windsor Festival International String Competition.
His friends in Luton Symphony Orchestra wish him many congratulations and every good wish for his future career.
