Charley being so desperate not to loose Frank and he doesn’t realize he already has in every way that matters…the Frank he loved, the one that’s “inside” Franklin Shepard Inc, doesn’t exist anymore. Except!! he fucking DOES and that’s the fucking tragedy. Even after saying he never wants to see or speak to Charley again, even after the permanent ending of their friendship, Frank still says “don’t write what you know, write what you know” words Charley said to him, twenty fucking years earlier, about writing with your heart, that made him believe in himself as a composer. Words Charley probably believes Frank has long since forgotten.

tyler has gotta be the funniest character in merrily. he’s there the entire time. he’s a background character. he invented the answering machine. he hates mary and charley. he’s a nobody waiter at a club. he’s giving frank coke out of his necklace. he arranged the cruise that ultimately led to the friendship falling apart. he’s weirdly homoerotic w frank. he’s just some guy. we could have a whole spinoff based on him

Also under-appreciated little joke in merrily is the title of the smash hit in-universe Franklin Sheppard & Charley Kringas musical "musical husbands" which is hinted to be a show about a woman who is playing musical husbands (i.e., changing husbands) starring a woman who is on her 3rd or 4th marriage, which she is about to end, and written by two guys in a creative marriage who are also about to get work divorced. Delicious.

Truly, I don't think I've seen a piece of art that gets to the raw, lasting pain of friendship breakups better than Merrily We Roll Along. There are too many shows about the power of friendship, and friendships lasting or being rekindled, not enough about how much it fucking sucks to lose friends you still really care about

Merrily We Roll Along is constantly winking to the fact that it’s told backwards and I eat it up every time. They say “never look back,” and “never look behind you,” and “We go way back” “But seldom forward,” and “feels like an ending, but it’s really a beginning, right?” and I cheer and clap and hoot and holler.

Musicals are time loops. Every night, the same thing happens except for a few minor differences. It always ends the same. If you want the characters to do something different or to make better choices, too bad. The actors are bound by the script and the score. The only way for the time loop to end is for the show to close. But you (the audience) don't want the show to close, nor do the actors who would like to be employed. It's a lose/lose situation. For the actors, audience, technicians, and for the characters, who are forever stuck in the same stretch of time.
