Used some annual leave for a wellbeing day. And used it to play my dear no-brain-required game. It always feels weirdly like coming home.
Ironically I played none of these chars, but I like to see them hanging out in the warband char select screen.
What I'm actually doing is riding around the world honouring and desecrating flames for the Midsummer event. No I need none of the rewards, yes I need the asmr of the horse's clippity-clop with a paladin in the iconic T3 armour and a fuck off huge sword.
And to the random who messaged me "why aren't you flying bro?" I dunno man I'm just enjoying the journey. My horse. Look at her. She sparkles. Let me live dammit.
MRI machines and cooling units and AC and IT systems in hospitals are breaking due to the heat. Lab equipment is failing. Some cancer treatments cannot be done due to machine failures. A&E overcrowding is worse due to heat related health issues and sheer amount of people is making the heat in hospitals worse (and the AC! Is breaking!) Patients with appointments are being advised to bring in "a lot" of water with them to be able to safely attend. Fans cannot be used in hospitals. Norwich has no functuoning MRI scanners right now. And the staff have to keep working through all of this, they are getting ill and sleep deprived which is compounding issues further. This is not normal 👍
In the PNW too a ton of us live in houses without air conditioning because we never needed it before, you could just run a box fan in the window overnight. We literally do not have the infrastructure
"Europeans/Northerners/(Insert Group Here) are just weak" also ignores the class issue.
The poorest folk are the ones living in the homes and apartments that are too old for inbuilt AC and that haven't been retrofitted for it. And they can't afford window units, especially not with the markup, if there even is one left in the store to buy. The people sweltering in the back of every restaurant right now where the aircon is broken but the manager won't close? Those are working class people who can't afford to get fired, working over stove tops in 105F heat.
In most of these locations these poorest people are disproportionately likely to not be white* which makes the repeated smug geniuses in every thread like this piping up with “white people problems!” particularly disgusting. Beyond the perennial point we keep trying to convey on this webbed site that guys, equating ‘Europe’ only with ‘white people’ is what our local racists do and people claiming to be progressive need to stop repeating their talking points.
*plus even outside the lowest incomes or the most heat-intensive manual jobs, things like home ownership rates are also correlated with ethnicity [UK stats as example] and a) a lot of rental tenants are prohibited from having anything except free-standing devices even if they can afford them and b) window AC units are not compatible with a lot of building windows in the UK (casement has long been much commoner than sash) and afaik many other European countries, because they were never built with them in mind. Because this is 15-20•c hotter than summer temperatures at the time they were built. Because of that whole global climate crisis.
This article on housing in Paris was a rough read, and most (possibly all, idk) of the Parisians quoted were Black or North African French, who are in fact a large, long-standing and important part of the population. This really should not be news to anyone.

We haven't had TIME to adapt our infrastructure to cope with 35C+ annual heatwaves, that's the point. It's scary how quickly this is happening and becoming a regular thing. British weather is known for being grey and rainy for a reason. Except now it's not.
Most of our old stock of houses are uninsulated brick which absorb the heat and become ovens, and windows are not always of a type that's suitable for air con units. And even many new builds are cheaply made and not always suitably insulated.
You know why? We never needed to account for this kind of heat when building houses! You know why? Because it's not normal or natural!

Julian Devorak truly is the character of all time. To me. He’s a fugitive plague doctor with a leech collection. He runs a clinic in the neglected side of town offering free medical care to the impoverished. He believes his life and needs are expendable. The first time you meet him, he breaks into your house and says “death cast her gaze on this wretch and looked away.” He wears an eye patch over a functioning eye and an oversized black coat like a cape. He takes you to his grandma’s house to escape the authorities. She drugs him to sleep. He breaks up with you on the first date and cries about it until his estranged sister yells at him. He has memory loss and believes he’s cursed to take others’ wounds. He didn’t commit the murder he’s accused of but won’t let anyone exonerate him and gives a dramatic speech to a jeering crowd before being hanged. He comes back to life and learns that friendship is the real magic. He tells you he loves you before he makes a deal with the Devil. He plays the viola and carries multiple kinds of counterfeit currency. He likes romantic cliches but is flustered by affection. He is regularly bullied by his ex’s pet snake and some raven that claimed him. He knows 7 languages. He puts vodka in his mouthwash and five hour energy in his coffee. He laughs like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park. He’s as agile as a cat. He is the clumsiest man alive. He’s a 6’4 bisexual masochistic sub with hairy tits and no ass. Fuck.
