kento feels it when he wakes up - that all too familiar weight of being one year older.
he stretches and sighs, shoulders so tense from work and stress. tiredness still lingers despite the full night’s sleep he just got. his feet are sore from the fight against the cursed spirit yesterday. the list could go on.
still, he starts his birthday like any other day because, as a jujutsu sorcerer, it is any other day. it’s just the day that he happened to become another year older.
he showers, shaves, gets dressed. the tiredness slowly fades away and is replaced by the familiar hatred for the work day. but before he can reach the kitchen, he is stopped by the adorable sight of you: slumped over the kitchen island asleep.
there’s flour and batter dried onto your face, some icing on the apron he got your a few years back. and despite the uncomfortable position you’re in, hunched over and head on your arms, you’re out cold.
on the table sits a small cake, the words “happy b-day kento!” written sloppily in frosting, and a note next to it.
“happy birthday, ken!! so happy to share another year with the best man alive. can’t wait for all the future birthdays we’ll get to share together”
he tucks the note into his coat pocket and smiles. maybe getting a year older wasn’t so bad.

your eyes haunt him. they have since the moment he got back to marley. whenever reiner has a moment of time to let his mind wander it always brings him back to you.
the pain he caused you, mainly, and that look in your eyes the last time he saw them. so full of hurt. and it was all his fault.
now, he's on the train back from the mid-east war. the constant fighting had worn his body to the bone. the stress of being on the front lines, and as a titan shifter nonetheless, wears him out more than the others.
he remembers back on paradis, before revealing himself as the armored titan, you had told him that he should take it easier.
"we're better when we fight together, after all! it's okay to let some of the others take on some of the burden as well."
he wished he listened to you. he wished he could go back to moments like that. moments where your eyes would light up as you nudged him, joking about stupid things.
but he couldn't. pieck lightly tapped his shoulder, breaking him out of thought.
"hey, we're almost back," she smiled at him, "spacing out, huh? must be thinking of something good if you were that out of it."
yeah, he thought, he was.

reiner can't think of many moments in his life where he's felt at such a loss for words. in those few moments, however, he thinks this one might take the cake.
you're standing in front of him. you're older, prettier - he didn't think that was even possible - and really here. you're not a figment of his imagination.
he thinks of so many things that he wants to say. he's missed you, he's thought about you every day, he's wanted nothing more than to see you again, you look so beautiful.
none of them come out.
because your eyes are downcast, sad. and only flickering to look at him every few seconds. his heart breaks.
"it's been a while, huh?" you barely even whisper it. still, just hearing your voice makes him shudder. he didn't realize just how much he missed hearing it.
he nods, still staring and still struggling to talk. hell, he can barely even believe this is real. that he's getting a chance to talk to you again, and that you aren't trying to kill him for what he did.
you sigh, tugging at a belt on your gear. he follows your fingers and then falls back onto your eyes, as always.
"look, i don't-"
"i'm sorry."
he finally cuts you off, and it's then that your eyes finally meet his for longer than a second.
"i-i'm so sorry."
it's all he can say. that's all he's wanted to say to you for years now. all he wanted was one chance to apologize to the hurt that he caused you. for making your eyes shine less.
if the only thing he does for the rest of his life is grovel and beg for forgiveness at your feet, he'd be okay with that.
you let out an airy chuckle and it catches him off guard.
"yeah, i know. i'm sorry too."
he can't fathom why on earth you are apologizing. he's done nothing but cause you pain, and you're apologizing to him?
he thinks for certain, now, that you're the opposite of the lies marley fed him about people on paradis. because no devil could ever be as angelic as you are.
and as he gapes at you, awestruck by your words, you smile at him and that light in your eyes returns for the briefest of moments.

he wakes with a start. years have gone and passed since the battle of earth, yet the nightmares still haunt him. he thinks that they always will, even a little. however, they have gotten better over time.
"good morning," you smile down at him.
well, especially with you by his side.
reiner huffs a response, still too deep in sleep's depths to form words. the sunlight pours in through the open window next to you. he could've sworn he died and went to heaven.
he hasn't. and he thanks every god out there for allowing him to find such peace in this lifetime.
you brush some hair lightly out of his face with your hand, the coolness of the ring on your finger making him sigh. his eyes shut instinctively. it's too bright, too early.
"we have to go meet the others today, don't fall back asleep on me." your voice was so light, so pleasant. he's finding it hard to listen.
his eyes open again and he meets yours for the first time this morning. he's met with that all too familiar gaze.
the one that he saw after he kissed you for the first time. or when he snuck out of the barracks with you all those nights to look at the stars. the look when he asked you to marry him.
his eyes look back with the same feelings, and he feels happiness.

after i wrote my last fic for reiner, i realized that the last, like, four things i've written for him have been pure angst. he's just such a guilt-ridden character, it's so easy to write angst for him 😖
mikasa was what you would describe as the embodiment of pure beauty. she's strong willed, pretty, and tough as hell. well, she is an ackerman, after all, so of course she was absolutely perfect in every regard.
everyone knew that - you especially knew that.
she wasn't someone you ever thought you'd have the courage to talk to. just looking at her made all words die in your throat. your mouth felt dry as your head went empty. she always had that effect on you.
yet somehow, eren had roped you into the little group him, armin and mikasa had. you were grateful, really. having friends made you feel less nervous about leaving home for the military. and the three of them were good company. eren, despite his tendency to let his anger cloud his thoughts, was fun to be around while armin always managed to make you feel included.
and then there was mikasa.
she'd never really initiate conversation. maybe here or there she'd ask you how your training went, or what your thoughts on the past lesson were. but compared to the other two, she was never overly talkative.
maybe that's what you loved about her so much. despite her not being the most verbal, there were subtle things she did that showed she appreciated your friendship.
mikasa was an early riser. most days you were, some days you weren't. today was one of the latter where you found that sleep couldn't escape you. even as the sun was pouring through the windows, you still found yourself in the comfort of your bed.
by the time you did manage to get going, it was way past time for breakfast in the mess hall. you cursed under your breath as you got dressed. if you didn't manage to eat something before morning drills, the day was going to be hell.
"well look who finally woke up," eren smirked as you entered the mess hall and sat down with him and the others.
"shut up. i barely get any sleep as is, just let me sleep in some days," you rubbed your eyes as your stomach growled, loudly. it only egged eren on further.
"was it worth sleeping in if it meant you got to miss breakfast?" eren teased you yet again. you shot him a glare. he ignored it, thankfully, but mostly because jean had walked by and started to pick on him.
a nudge to your shoulder made you look to your left. mikasa was looking at you with a small loaf of bread in her hand.
"here, take it," she placed the bread into your hands. a confused look crept onto your face.
"i grabbed an extra one for you. when you didn't wake up after sasha dropped her gear, i knew you wouldn't make it to breakfast," she explained. you felt the heat rush to your face at her thoughtfulness.
"oh.. thank you, mikasa," she nodded silently.
you began eating the bread as you tried to calm the flutter that settled into your heart. it was such a small gesture, but it meant so much coming from her. the fact that she thought of you and went out of her way to get food for you.. it was so mikasa. and it made your stupid childish crush on her grow.
you didn't have much time to think on it, however, as jean and eren started exchanging punches across the table. and mikasa being mikasa, quickly got up and broke up the fight.
silently, you watched as she placed herself in front of eren. a subtle angry look was on her face and directed at jean.
"you're lucky mikasa's here. if she wasn't, i'd have given your ass a more thorough beating!" jean scoffed as connie held him back. the fight dispersed soon after as connie dragged jean away. mikasa and eren were left standing in front of your table.
"you don't have to protect me, you know," eren complained as he kicked his chair in. he started to walk out as mikasa followed close behind.
as they walked out, you could see how she berated him. it happened every time that eren acted recklessly like this; she'd always get mad at him for starting some fight.
you knew she wasn't actually mad, just worried for him. you knew because you could see her constantly glancing over at eren as they walked out of the mess hall. there was a glimmer in her eye that she only got when she looked at eren.
as if on cue, eren made some sort of comment that made mikasa blush and hide behind her scarf. it made her eyes light up.
you kept eating your bread, knowing she'd never look at you like that.

you're the first person he looks for - always. before the two of you even started dating he'd seek out your eyes in a crowd. your eyes. not anyone else's.
reiner was a quick learner when it came to the ODM gear. he'd whip through one of the training courses nearly flawlessly. then, once he was back at the start, he'd give you a wink and a cocky grin. and oh how he loved the way you'd roll your eyes with a small smile at his annoying confidence.
he's too damn cute for his own good sometimes.
this carries over into the rest of your time in the military: his desire to look for you, make sure that you're alive. when you're both in trost, fighting actual titans, he tries to always keep an eye on you.
it's hard when you're in different squadrons. yet he still finds himself searching for you throughout the city. through the titan massacring his fellow cadets, he still looks for you.
he's careless. as he's distracted by the thought of finding you, he nearly misses a titan running towards him.
"look out-!" he finally heard your call as you soar by on your ODM gear to slice the titan's ankle. it was seconds away from attacking him.
you didn't have to do that. regardless of if you showed up or not, he would've been fine. but you didn't know that. a pang runs through his chest at the reminder of the weight of a warrior.
"better watch your back, braun. or i might actually rank higher than you when we graduate." this time, you're the one grinning and giving him a smirk. despite your expression, he can still see the way your fingers clench the handle of your gear. you're shaken beyond belief.
he realizes then that he loves you.
"yeah, thanks." he's still a little out of it. the rush from the sudden attack to the rush of emotions that he just felt sent him into a daze. he's surprised that he managed to respond to you at all.
you notice this, he doesn't care.
the thought of being in love with you terrifies him. he's not supposed to feel this way about you.. a supposed devil in the eyes of his homeland. still he does. and there's no stopping it now, he's too far gone for his own good.
he crashes his lips to yours and doesn't look back.
reiner knows. he knows that he's fucked. he knows, but there's nothing that can stop him now from caring for you. for loving you. for always making sure that you're okay first. by looking for you, your eyes, first.
even as he reveals his true identity to eren on the walls by saying that he's the armored titan. he looks at you. you break before his eyes, he breaks harder.
when he came to that island, he thought there would be nothing that could tear him away from his goal. no island devil could deter him from fulfilling his duty as a warrior.
you aren't a devil, though, you're an angel.
an angel whose eyes he loves, and soul he loves even more.
there was something about the way the droplets hitting the window sounded that made his mind wander easily. the paperwork on his desk always gets abandoned, he leans back in his chair, and he thinks. the cool air streamed in from a crack in the window, giving a chill to the air.
it was calm, pleasant almost.
sometimes his mind would wander to the past expedition, or he’d think about how annoying some of the new cadets were, or about how stressful the upcoming mission was going to be.
but often he’d think of you.
god, you were constantly on his mind. but somehow the rain made him think of you more.
maybe it was because you were a lot like the rain to him: calm and pleasant. maybe it was because he liked thinking about you. he didn’t know.
he did know, however, that when the rain came he always thought of you. your stupid smile that made the corners of his mouth quirk up. your personality that seemed to make him feel at home. you, how much he cares for you.
he liked thinking about you. there wasn’t much in his life that was like you. you were a constant, a sudden shift to his days.
much like the rain.
“what are you thinking about?” you’d always ask, coming into his office to affectionately disturb him, as usual.
“nothing,” he’d always respond before turning away from the window.
now, it was raining again. in the middle of spring a nice, warm rain rolled over your home. it was the kind of rain that brings an earthy scent to your nose and reminders you of summer.
the window was open, as always, and levi was thinking.
yet he wasn’t thinking about the scouts, or the walls, or paradis. those were so long in the past now that he can’t remember the last time he willingly thought about it.
he only thought of you.
“what are you thinking about?” you ask him again, a soft smile on your face. the years of being soldiers had worn both of you down, but even so you kept on smiling.
“you,” he responded and mirrored your smile, “always you.”
