I was damn lucky. It was only a recon mission, and I was even luckier that we managed to finish it early without havinβ any casualties. I sigh; Iβm really getting too old for this shit. I should quit while Iβm ahead. Iβve been feelinβ like this for a loonngg time but havenβt made moves to do anythinβ else. But with the recent news I feel like itβs time to find somethinβ else. My grandparents are gettinβ along and with Pop havinβ a stroke this is the push I need to find somethinβ that aintβ active duty. Maybe I can train soldiers or some shit, become a paper pusher on base but one thing is for sure, I canβt be riskinβ my life no more.
The boys and I arrive on base. Some offerinβ to take me home but I need time to myself first. Time to think alone. βCause I know once Iβm with my family I ainβt gonβ be alone for a long time.
I get BJ to drop me off at the diner; wantinβ to get somethinβ in me. Iβm starvinβ and a coffee and some grub will do me some good.
I changed outta uniform on base, and am in civilian clothin wearin a hat. It feels weird beinβ on this side. Iβd been in uniform 24/7 for the last three months.
Iβm sittinβ at the back mindin my business when I see two ladies walk in from the corner of my eye. I pay them no mind until I hear a voice thatβs been stuck in my head for months
βThank you, Jebus! Iβve been dying for a feed for agesssβ, Everly says. She looks like sheβs been out late into the night and all morninβ. I look at my watch; itβs 6am. Sheβs wearing a tight white long sleeved v-neck top thatβs tucked into some really tight ripped jeans and some strappy heelsβ¦fuck. Itβs been three months since Iβve last seen her and she still looks so fuckinβ good.
βGood lord girl, that Kiwi slang is gonβ kill me one dayβ her friend Shayla teases her.
βYouβll get used to it, boβ, Everly winks at her as they make their way to a table diagonally in front of me. I didnβt realize that Lea had been sittinβ there that entire time.
They greet her and start orderinβ some food. I canβt help but stare at Everly.
βSweet baby Jesus, I need to use the restroom. Lilβ one, didnβt you say you needed to as well?β, Shayla asks Everly as she gets up
βYeah but you go first. Iβm psyching myself up in going. Bodysuits are not ideal for the loo, you know?β, sheβs playing around with the salt and pepper shakers.
βWhat the heck, girl. Next time wear somethinβ thatβs fast accessβ¦ for other things as wellβ, Shayla winks at her as she makes her way to the restroom
Everly just rolls her eyes and shakes her head. She turns to Lea.
βSis, it was just meant to be dinner and drinks. It turned into clubbing!β, Everly gathers her hair and puts it up in a high ponytailβ¦goddamn her hair is so long. I shake my head, hopinβ that will rid me of my questionable thoughts about her. She just walks into the goddamn diner, and sheβs already got me. And she donβt even know it.
βChica, what did you expect? Itβs Shayla!β, Lea chastises her.
βUgh, sheβs trying to set me up with this guy from the club..AGAINβ, Everly mutters out.
βWell, are you going to tell her?β
βTell her what exactly?β
βUhhh, I donβt knowβ¦ that youβre married!β, Lea sputters out
Everly throws her head back, groaning.
βUuugggghhhhhh, last time I told someone that it went swimminglyβ,
βWell if you want her to stop bugging you, you tell her. Plus sheβs gonna kick your ass if she finds out youβve been keeping it from her this entire timeβ
βAnd what exactly is thatβ, Shayla is back and slides on right beside Lea, looking between the two.
βHmmm, that Iβm not ready to date or go out or do anything yet with anyoneβ
βBabygirl! What about that guy from last night! Dang, he was fiine. Like fucking fineβ, Shayla starts fanning herself to illustrate how apparently good lookinβ this guy was; I canβt help but sneer
βIβm goodβ, is all Everly says looking down at her manicured hand; trying to avoid eye contact.
βWell that fake wedding ring is sure doing a fine job of keeping them away! If I hadnβt told him he wouldβve missed his shot. Cartier even, damn girl you bad and boujee for a ruseβ
Lea is dead quiet as Everly winces. Shayla picks up on the shift of the mood.
ββ¦wait a dang secondβ¦ it is fake right..?β, Shayla asks slowly.
βAnd Iβm going to the restroom, excuse meβ, Lea nudges Shayla to give her space to get out. She successfully escapes leaving Everly on her own to deal with Shayla.
βYeah about thatβ¦β, Everlyβs scratching her head a grimace on her face
βHoly fucking shit, youβre actually married for real!? EVERLY KAIA RAKENA!β, the pure disbelief is evident on Shaylaβs face
βSshhh, not so loud!β, Everly tries to shush her but Shayla is on a roll.
βBut not long, right? Canβt you get this shit annulled like ASAP?β, Shayla asks
βYeah βcause 10 years isnβt a legitimate marriage, ehβ, Everly mumbles out
β10 YEARS!?β, Shayla practically yells.
βOh my god, Shayla. Keep it down!β, Everly hisses at her.
Fuck, even at this point Iβd been caught wayyy off guard. I start choking on my food, needing coffee to wash it down. 10 years!? A whole goddamn decade!? How old is this girl!? I try be quiet to not draw attention to myself; luckily theyβre too absorbed in their conversation to notice much of anything else.
βYouβve gotta be shittinβ me, right? This is some dumb prank youβre pullinβ on meβ,
Leaβs back and reads the room, Shayla getting out so that Lea can get back in.
βWait.. you knew this entire time!?β, Shaya spits out
βWho do you think picked her up from the airport!?β, Lea snaps back
At this point Everly just has her hands in her head, shaking it. Their food arrives givinβ them the time they need for shit to cool down.
βGirl, I expect you to tell me every dang thing about this 10 year marriage of yoursβ, Shayla demands as they start eating their food. Everly having gotten pancakes like last time.
βTrust me, itβs not as exciting as you think it isβ, Everly mumbles over her food.
βPfft, yeah right!β
βWell why do you think Iβm here! Itβs not that exciting if Iβm on the other side of the world!β, Everly exclaims
βSo this is the break you were tellinβ me about, huh?β, as Shayla sips on her coffee.
βIt sure is. Iβd like to thank Lea for thatβ
βIt was my idea for her to take a year break, preferably in a different countryβ, Lea offers up.
'βGoddamn, what happened?β, Shayla asks. The initial anger of not knowinβ shit is gone now, she just looks worried.
βUgh, thatβs for another timeβ, Everly looks down at her phone, βAnyway, Lea we better get going soon. I need to check up on Jeb and keep Edie companyβ
βOf course, sisβ
βGirl, you is gonβ need a Redbullβ
βI sure do. Can we stop by a gas station so I can get one please?β Everly asks Lea. Lea nods.
βDo you need to stop by yours to grab anything?β, Lea offers
βNah, should be all good. I think I have enough clothesβ
βWait, what? Have you been staying at the Syversonβs?β, Shayla asks, eyebrow raised.
βYeah I have. It got hard going back and forth between mine and theirs so Edie offered for me to stay with them. Plus I didnβt like that Edie was all by herself in that house when she wasnβt at the hospitalβ, Everly explains, βif you guys will excuse me, Iβll be right backβ.
She gets up and goes to the restroom while the rest of the girlβs keep on eatinβ.
β...Is she okay?β, Shayla asks Lea once Everly is out of earshot.
βHmmm, she will be. Sheβs been through a lot.. I know she doesnβt show it especially when sheβs out and about with yβall. She's too goddamn busy being a clown and making everyone laugh, but sheβs been through hell and back, and I donβt just mean her marriage. Promise me youβll keep an eye on her when I ainβt around?β, Leaβs got a concerned look on her face; you can tell she really cares about Everly.
βFor sure. You donβt even need to askβ
Everly comes back and the girlβs change the subject. They donβt chat much as they finish their food, not staying much longer as they pay and make their way to the parking lot.
My mind is still reeling from the info I just found out. Not only about how long Everlyβs been married but that fact sheβs been looking after my grandparents this entire time. Gran hadnβt mentioned anythinβ about Everly. Not only that I know the guest room hasnβt been ready in years, having become a makeshift storage room. Iβd been meaning to tidy it out but havenβt had the time. I can take one guess in where Everlyβs been sleepingβ¦
Iβd been itching to get to the hospital to see Pop, but I hadnβt realized till I got there that he ainβt the only one Iβd been dyinβ to see. I know the last time I saw her it didnβt end too good, and I stormed out angry, not willinβ to listen to her. I Uber to the hospital and get there fairly quickly witβ not much traffic around; and Iβm grateful for it. I find that Iβm the first one there; relieved to have some time with granddad by myself.
Seeinβ Pop hooked up to all these machines; all these wires and shit cominβ outta him breaks my goddamn heart. I didnβt realize Iβd be this affected until I actually got here. In my mind heβs always been big and strong; forever my hero in my heart and soul but the reality is the stroke had done him no good. Iβve never seen him so gaunt in my whole damn life.. Almost like heβs witherinβ away but hanginβ on by a thread. I can feel my heart breakinβ listeninβ to the machines beepinβ, seeinβ Popβs chest go up and down in rough inhale and exhale.
Iβve seen grown men and women die for their country; witnessed them blown to bits, blood and guts everywhere. But seeinβ Pop look almost lifeless like this hits differently.
I feel my eyes tearinβ up but I wipe them away quickly; angry that I hadnβt been here when it happened but also so goddamn relieved that I made it back witβ him still kickinβ, even if he is currently unconscious.
I sit there right against Popβs hospital bed; his frail hand in mine, holdinβ it against my lips as I look on at him, and remember all the things heβs ever done for me. Grateful and so dang lucky to have him as my Poppa.
Yeah I lost my father young; and pains me deep. But this man right in front of me, has not only been a grandfather but a dad, too.
Heβs been there for me through everythinβ. The devastation of losing my parents, first fight I got into at school βcause some redneck dick was bullying the new Asian kid in town, taught me how to drive a stick, first heartbreak with Lily-Beth, betrayal from Wyatt, puttinβ up witβ me when I fell into underage drinkinβ and fuckinβ around left, right, and center, and then supportinβ me when I joined the Army. How proud he was when I was made Captain.
My grandparents have been a solid rock in my life. I donβt know how long Iβd been sitting there; so lost in my thoughts about everythinβ we've been through together. Reminiscing about the past; nostalgia pullinβ me deep down. Iβd been starinβ into space; so outta focus that I donβt even realize that Gran had arrivedβ¦ with Everly.
Theyβre surprised. I hadnβt told Gran I was on my way home. Gran comes around the bed; coming over to give me a hug. Everly frozen at the door; her big brown eyes wide.
βOh, Jax. Thank the good Lord, youβre hereβ, Gran hugs me so tight, sheβs trembling, crying.
βGran, itβs alright. Iβm here now, Iβm hereβ, I hug her back just as tightly, rubbing her back trying to comfort her. Itβs real hard seeinβ Pop like this; I canβt even imagine what Gran is feelinβ right now. If I'm feelinβ this bad, she must be feeling it a hundred times worse. Pop is the love of her life; her soulmate. I just canβt imagine one without the other.
I look up to see Everly hoverinβ at the periphery of the room. I can tell sheβs wantinβ to give us a moment alone; a moment of privacy.
Gran lets go, wipinβ her tears away, and turns around to motion for Everly to come over. Sheβs changed out of her heels and is now wearing some ballet flats. Sheβs also thrown on a long nude cardigan that stops just above her knees. Sheβs put her hair back down, her long black gray hair cascading down her back, her side bangs framing her face. She comes over slowly, apprehensive, but sheβs got a small nervous smile on her face.
Gran puts her arm around Everly, tuckinβ her against herself, holding her close.
βEvieβs been nothinβ but the kindest, most thoughtful angel; being my constant companion while youβve been away; I didnβt feel so alone havinβ her stay in the house. Taking me to and from the hospital everyday, even finishing work early for me.β, Gran looks over to Everly, βI donβt know what I wouldβve done without you, sweet girlβ and gives her a kiss on her head. Everly wraps arms around Gran, squeezing her tight.
βOf course. Any timeβ, she answers.
Seeing them like this makes my heart swell. I canβt believe how kind and caring this girl has been, especially considerinβ how I left when we last saw each other. I need to thank her; truly thank her βcause I donβt know anyone who would go as far as she has for my family. And that means so much more than the world to me.
βJax, Evie, can yaβll get me somethinβ to eat at the hospital cafeteria, please? A coffee and a turkey sandwich would be niceβ, Granβs voice breaks through my thoughts, and I look over to Everly. Sheβs waitinβ on me to say somethinβ, to make a move.
Gran thinks sheβs being slick but I know what sheβs up to. I know she wants me to go and fix things with Everly. Which is all good βcause thatβs exactly what I wanna do, too.
βCourse, Gran. Anythinβ else?β, I ask her.
βNaw, but grab yourselves somethinβ if yβall are hungryβ, she tells me as she tries to hand me some cash; I wave her hand away as I start makinβ my way out, Everly following quietly behind me.
βNo rush, yβall. Take your timeβ, if Gran could have a shit eatinβ grin on her face, this is what itβd look like. I shake my head; grinninβ. She thinks sheβs really slick. She sits down on the chair beside Pop, taking his hand in hers as she starts talkinβ to him.
I stand and wait for Everly as she catches up with me. I can tell she donβt know what to make of me and the situation, and I donβt blame her.
βHey, ba- Everlyβ, I quickly cough tryna mask what I really wanted to call her; though I know it ainβt right of me to do so.
βHey, Jax..β, sheβs walking slow beside me, starinβ down at her flats, her hands shoved into the pockets of her cardigan. Everlyβs cautious; unsure.
βHow ya been?β, I ask her. And I am genuinely curious. I wanna know everythinβ sheβs been up to these past three months.
I can see her not expectinβ that but she answers anyway.
βYeah not bad, thanksβ, she looks up at me with the tiniest of smiles; just the corner crooked up. Her eyes still look hesitant, βIβm sorry about Jeb; I truly am. I can see how much your grandparents mean to you..β
βThanksβ, I clear my throat tryna not to get emotional.
We get to the cafeteria and get into line to grab Granβs food. Iβm scanninβ the display cabinets lookinβ to see if there was anythinβ worth munchinβ on.
βCan I get ya anythinβ?β, I offer.
βNo, thank youβ, she shakes her head; always so polite.
βWould you be up to splittinβ a muffin witβ me?β, I suggest. Everly looks a bit confused but says yes anyway.
I ordered Grans food to go, a muffin for Everly and I, and another coffee for myself. I get given a table number, and I make my way to one of the tables at the back corner, secluded from the majority of the folk around. Everly looks between the table and the way back to Poppaβs hospital room; clearly confused. I wait for her to get to me; gesturinβ for her to take the bench with the comfortable cushioned backrest and seat. I pull the chair out; takinβ a seat.
I wake to the sharp shrill of an alarm, luckily itβs turned off quickly. I groan, my neck is stiff from having slept funny.
I slowly open my eyes, blinking when I realise Iβm wrapped up in large, heavy, warm arms.
βBoobie, what time is it?β I groan out, rubbing my eyes, shit doesnβt look right. I feel a rumble of laughter under me and a deep voice answers. One Iβm not accustomed to waking up to.
βThat a new nickname for me huh, baby?β
I jerk up and look to my side in horror, a sick feeling sinking in my stomach. I scramble looking for my glasses when I feel them on the coffee table.
Itβs not who I think it is, and Iβm not where I think I am. It hasnβt been long, and sometimes Iβm disoriented when I wake up.
βFuck, oh my god. Iβm so sorry. Ho-how did we end up here?β, I ask Sy. I hold my hands tight together trying to stop them from shaking.
βIt ainβt nothinβ, sweet pea. You dozed off in the truck. I carried ya in after Walker helped me. I popped ya here on the couch, and ya grabbed me, holdinβ me captive before I could escapeβ Sy tries to joke with me but I feel sick. He must sense something is off because he suddenly looks confused.
βWhatβs wrong, bub? You alright?β
I squeeze my eyes shut tight. Fuck. Thereβs no other way to say it.
βNo Iβm not alright, Iβm sorry Jax, I really am.β
βWhat do ya mean? Why do ya keep apologizinβ?β He looks so lost, so confused.
Thereβs nervous tension in the air. I don't want to say it but I have to. My heart is beating so fast and my chest feels tight, I feel sweat trickling down my back.
βJax, Iβm taking a year break...β, my voice is starting to shake, I can barely look at him. βFrom my marriage. Iβm-Iβm marriedβ
The change in Sy is immediate. His eyebrows are furrowed, his lips set in a massive frown, and his shoulders are tense.
βAre ya frickinβ kiddinβ right now?β He growls out.
I flinch. What was I expecting? Well, to be fair itβs not like I planned this shit. Shit just happened.
He gets up. And starts making his way out.
βJax...β I start calling out to him
βNaw, Iβm outβ he snaps βall yβall women are the goddamn sameβ, he laughs shaking his head, but thereβs no humour behind it.
Before I can fully explain heβs left; Iβm too scared to go after him. Scared of what else he would say. The silence following his departure is deafening.
Sy POV
βIβm marriedβ, it plays over and over again in my head like a broken record the entire drive home.
Well ainβt that a fuckinβ daisy. The first woman in years to have finally caught more than just my eye, and sheβs goddamn fuckinβ married.
Gran had been dotinβ over this girl over the phone like thereβs no tomorrow. I ainβt gonβ lie; I didnβt put too much thought or weight into her words, but that all changed once I had finally got to meet and spend some time with her.
She was everything Gran had said. Intelligent, funny, caring, kind, genuine, and beautiful. The fact she reminds Gran and Poppa of Momma is somethinβ. My chest tightens up thinkinβ about her. My beautiful Mama.
I finally get home after mullinβ over her the entire way. My grandparents can tell somethinβ is up as I walk to my room and start packinβ my shit.
βHey honey, you were gone for a bit. Everythin alright?β, Gran asks as she stands by my doorway.
βFineβ, I grunt in response. I donβt know what to say.
βHowβs Everly? Did yβall say goodbye to each other okay?β Gran presses on as Poppa comes and joins us.
βOh, you donβt gotta worry about her no moreβ, I scoff real loud. I canβt even contain how Iβm feelinβ; I can usually poker face myself outta most scenarios but with anythinβ to do with Everly I canβt seem to.
βWhat do ya mean?β Poppa mutters out. Him and gran both lookinβ confused.
βSheβs marriedβ, I spit out, βsheβs on a break at the moment; thatβs why sheβs hereβ, I donβt even mean to; but the words just come rushinβ out like verbal diarrhea
I can sense them; feel their surprise and their reaction. Though what comes outta their mouths is somethinβ I wasnβt prepared for.
βSo? That donβt mean shit, son. If sheβs here sheβs obviously here for a reasonβ, mumbles Pop.
βYβall mustβve met for a reason, dear. Why she move to the other side of the world, but winds up here. Winds up takinβ care of your granddaddyβ, Gran tries to make sense of the situation
βOh Gran, please donβt say this is βfateβ or some shit. Okay?β
βDonβt be givinβ your gran attitude, boyβ, Pop growls out.
βI ainβt. Iβm just sayinβ this ainβt no fate. This ainβt no soulmate horseshit, okay? No βGodβs planβ, I counter back. Wondering what theyβd say to this.
βSweetheart, marriage isnβt the be all or end all of a relationship. I see somethinβ between yaβll; I do. Somethinβ I ainβt ever seen you have with anyone else. And a piece of paper ainβt gotta stop that. What is meant to be will be,β My gran is so sure of herself and whatever this βthingβ is between Everly and I. Poppa even nods along with what sheβs saying. Theyβre being ridiculous; delusional at this point. She and I barely know each other.
βOkay whatever you say, Gran. Letβs get goinβ or Iβm gonβ be lateβ, I squeeze past them with my bag ready to get outta here. Ready to forget about Everly.
Jeb and I have made our way into the library with Sy and Edith not far behind us. Surprisingly Jeb is into sci fi books; Iβd just assume heβd be into war and/or murder mysteries. We were discussing the sci-fi classics when I find out that he found Dune an absolute bore.
βReally!? I thought youβd be a fan!β, I exclaim in pure astonishment
βNaw darlin, just βcause itβs a classic donβt mean itβs any goodβ, he points out.
βIβm guessing youβre not gonna bother with the movie thatβs just come out?β
βNot unless you want me to dieβ, he jokes
βOh my god, donβt say that!β, I lightly smack the arm I have linked with Jeb; mortified heβd be joking about something like that. Canβt say he doesnβt have a sense of humour, but jeez! He definitely isnβt no spring chicken anymore.
Well that decides it; Iβm gonna scratch that off my βto readβ list. Life is too short for boring books AND movies.
Sy and Edith have finally made their way to us. Syβs massive arms book free. His grandparents go off to roam and find what they want; Sy comes and joins me.
βHey, bub. Know what youβre after?β, heβs got the biggest smile, liviest eyes, but also thereβs a newfound warmth to them. I have no idea what he and Edith were mumbling about but it looked intense when I had looked back at them. There was a look of deep concentration on his face, as well as Ediths. Iβm curious but it also isnβt any of my business. Iβm dying to be a sticky beak, but I donβt have enough balls to ask Sy directly.
βHmmmm, Iβm not sure to be honestβ, I look up at him and heβs staring at me. Just staring. I watch his eyes just peruse my face. Examining every single and little thing he can, heβs not being subtle, and heβs definitely taking his damn time about it, too. The intensity of it gets to me and I have to look away. Iβm baffled; utterly confused. Not only by the way heβs staring at me but why heβs come to join me. I thought heβd be off doing his own thing. I had no inkling heβd want to spend time with me, especially at the library no less. Most people find the library boring.
βWell, watcha in the mood for: romance? Non-fiction? Fantasy? Contemporary? Horror? Post-apocalyptic?β, he lists all these genres, and Iβm happy he knows so many. He doesnβt seem like your stereotypical army beefcake.
βWow, sounds like youβre a reader yourselfβ, I grin big at him.
βHaha I could say the same thing for ya especially after last night. First the club and then the library the day after, say what girlβ, thereβs a smirk painted smugly on his bloody face. I take a good look at him. Heβs in a white shirt today and blue jeans. Worn brown boots on his feet. He seems to look bloody good in anything he wears. I shake my head; I canβt get distracted by this guy.
βWell what can I say; what you see is definitely not what you getβ
βItβs been a pleasure finding that outβ
Heβs got a look in his eye. This look on his face.
βYouβre more than welcomeβ, the smart arse in me couldnβt resist. I smile before I turn away; deciding to make my way to the adult fantasy section. If I donβt get my ass into gear I can tell we could just stand there and do nothing but chat all day.
Sy stays with me the entire time. Recommending books here and there. The books I pick he ends up stealing off me; adamant heβd be more than happy to carry them for me. I tell him I have arms that work perfectly fine, but he wonβt let up. Stubborn as fuck. Am I surprised? No. I guess this is what they meant by southern hospitality. We go past the philosophy section and I see Sy eyeing some books.
βPhilosophy?β, I ask him, an eyebrow raised.
βYeah, I got into it when I turned 17/18. Right when I joined the armyβ, he glanced at me, sucking his bottom lip into his mouth.
β15 or 16 for me. Kant, Plato, Socrates, Descartesβ, I list off the ones I can remember. Itβs been a while since Iβve dabbled in philosophy.
βI think therefore I amβ, he quotes.
We stay there for the rest of the time; and end up sitting on the floor side by side, right against each other, just flicking through Beyond Good and Evil by Nietzche. Debating, discussing. We donβt realise how long weβd been there until Jeb and Edith finally find us. Apparently itβs been nearly two hours. Theyβre starving and are keen to get a feed.
Iβm ready to go home but Edith is insistent I go and eat at their usual diner with them. I donβt even know how itβs happening but Iβm pretty much getting suckered into spending the rest of the day with them. I donβt want to be rude so I join them but I know deep down I shouldnβt. Itβs not appropriate spending this much time with patients, especially outside of work. Looking out for them after a dental procedure is different from going out socialising with them.
Next thing I know, I'm sitting beside Sy in the booth. Cramped, pushed right up against him as his large frame takes up most of the bench. He runs so hot I can feel the heat emanating from his body.
We have the menu open in front of us.
βSee anythinβ you like, bub?β He asked me. Heβs helping me choose something by suggesting meals.
βHmmmm, Iβll probably just get pancakesβ
βYeah? That sounds good. Got a bit of a sweet tooth, huh Sugar? Remind me what you do for work again..?β Heβs grinning, teasing me.
βOh hush, I take real good care of my teeth! I brush AND floss every night no matter what time I get home or how tired I amβ
βPfft, no one is that dedicatedβ
βYou might not be but I amβ
He pokes his tongue out at me and I do it right back.
βNow children, behave yourselves or none of yβall will be eatinβ, Jeb scolds us; joining in on our silliness.
We all laugh, enjoying everyoneβs company. The waitress comes and takes our order. Sy and I are debating which is better: waffles or pancakes.
Iβm obviously pro pancakes and heβs for waffles.
βThatβs why waffles are superior; their crispy-ness is where itβs atβ
βNah, theyβre so dry! Pancakes are fluffy and moist. That makes them the winnerβ
At this point Edith and Jeb just let us bicker, laughing at us mostly. I swear I see them from the corner of my eye look at each other a few times; this weird look in their eyes, smiles on their faces. Itβs like they know something we donβt.
βNow Evie, tell us why you moved here. And where are ya from?β Edith says
Weβre munching on our food now. Both the men ordered big American breakfasts plus waffles for Sy, and Edith an omelette.
Sy looks at me, eating some bacon, βYeah where the heck are you from? I still canβt figure out your weird accentβ
βMy accent isnβt that weirdβ I counter back, trying to get some chocolate ice cream on my pancake.
βYes it isβ, the entire Syverson says at the same time.
I cringe. Gosh, is my accent that bad?
βWell for your information; my accent is a culmination of places that Iβve lived inβ, I tell them enjoying my food. Itβs been a while since Iβve had some good pancakes.
I look up to see Syβs eyebrows raised; a look of curiosity spreading across his face as he stuffs his mouth with waffles.
βWell donβt leave us in suspense, dear girlβ, Jeb encourages me along.
βCan you guys guess?β, I grin, wanting to see if anyone can get it right
βOh hell naw, sweet pea! Just tell us, I know for a fact Iβm gonβ get this dead wrongβ, Sy mumbles over this food.
βOh cβmon, Captain! Thought youβd be up for a challengeβ, I tease him trying to goad him but he isnβt falling for it.
βI ainβt got the patience; itβs been bugginβ me since I met yaβ he confesses.
Iβm puzzled. Does that mean heβs been thinking about me?
βBorn in the Philippines, raised in New Zealand, lived in Canada for the shortest time, and lo and behold, this is the end productβ, I tell them.
Thereβs a simultaneous βwow, and oooβ from the Syversons. Iβm guessing they donβt know what to make of that or maybe theyβre impressed? Who knows.
βAnd what got ya over here?β Jeb asks.
βHmmm Iβd been living in Australia for a while, wanted a break, a change of sceneryβ, I tell them most of the truth, I mean Iβm not lying I am here for a break but what kind of break they donβt need to know.
I look over to Sy beside me. Heβs nodding acknowledging what Iβve said but not saying anything. His expression is contemplative.
We stay longer chatting more, all of us making our way through our meals.
Iβm finishing up my pancakes when Sy starts laughing at me.
βWhat? Why you cackling like a hyena for?β I ask him, confused as to how Iβve managed to garner this kind of reaction out of him.
βYouβre a mess, canβt take ya anywhereβ, he grins as he swipes his thumb on the corners of my mouth, wiping off chocolate ice cream, he sticks his thumb in his mouth licking it off, I canβt help but stare. βHere, I canβt get all of itβ, he puts his thumb under my chin and turns my head towards him, a napkin in his hand as he cleans me up, a big smile on his face.
βThanks Jax, always such a gentleman,β I grin back at him
βMy pleasure, bub. And only for youβ, he winks at me as he keeps his thumb under my chin for a second longer. I look into his eyes, and I swear it looks like he wants to kiss me. He licks his lips, his eyes flicking between mine and my lips, and he slowly starts leaning towards me..
Until thereβs a loud crash from the kitchen as we hear something break, ruining the moment.
I jump at the loud noise, Sy clears his throat, and letβs go of my chin.
βAlright, letβs get movinββ
I look up to see Edith and Jeb watching us with the biggest smiles Iβve ever seen on their faces.
Sy POV
I take my grandparents home first, todayβs activities zappinβ them of their energy. They wanted to rest before they took me to base.
Everly didnβt wanna wait in the truck; helping gran out and into the house. She also wanted to see Turbo.
βEvie honey, why donβt ya come stay and see Jax off? Jeb and I can take ya home afterβ Gran suggests
βOh the drive will be far too long for you guys and itβll be late into the evening. Plus Jaxβs flight is pretty late. I have a 7am start tomorrowβ Everlyβs biting her lip, a frown on her face.
I ainβt gonna lie Iβm bummed but she had a point. My grandparents are getting quite old and I donβt want them driving out that late and that far. I also donβt want Everly to have to Uber home. Plus sheβs exhausted and needs rest herself especially if she has an early start tomorrow.
βAlright I better be takinβ Everly home nowβ, I say.
βOkay sweet girl, donβt be a strangerβ gran gives her a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
Poppa gives her a big olβ bear hug making Everly laugh, βyou come on back and we get ya better at drivinβ a stick shift, huh?β
βItβs a dateβ she winks at Poppa making him smile big, βAlright you two, take care, and see you soonβ she smiles and makes her way to me.
I offer her my arm and she grabs it with her small hand.
We walk on over to the truck to the passenger side first, I open the door and help her get in. Her tiny 5ft self would need to leap in otherwise. Itβs a miracle she managed to drive this massive thing here.
I go on round to my side, and jump in. Put my seat belt on and start the engine. The truck roaring to life, and I start reversing outta the long driveway.
Weβre on the road to her place now, I got her to put her address in the GPS. An hour drive or so.
Iβve got my left hand on the steering wheel, my right on the gear stick as I glance over at Everly.
Sheβs looking out the window, even looking more tired but thereβs a smile on her face and sheβs resting her hands on her lap.
βMy grandparents adore ya, ya know?β I tell her
She looks on over to me her eyes bright, βI like them too, very muchβ
We talk here and there during the drive but it ainβt forced small talk, and when we ainβt talking weβre quiet but it ainβt bad. I donβt gotta put music on to fill an awkward silence βcause there ainβt none.
Sometime during the drive I didn't even realize, but I reached over to Everly and grabbed her hand. Holding it mine; enjoying the weight and feel of it. It felt right. I hadnβt realized till we made it to hers on the other side of town that sheβs fast asleep. I donβt know why the image of her with her head to the side sleeping makes me warm inside.
I kill the engine, pick her hand up from my thigh, givin it a quick kiss before I gently place it on her lap, and get outta the truck. I go to the back and grab her bag with her books from the library and then I go over on her side.
I unbuckle her seat belt and pick her up as gently and quietly as I can, not wanting to wake her. I snicker and shake my head in disbelief, sheβs light as fuck; sweet baby Jesus I bench heavier weights than her. I slowly close the door and lock the truck. Trying to be careful and not jostle her around too much.
I start going around the truck when I see someone come out the front door and I canβt believe who it is.
Itβs August Walker. CIA agent. Iβve worked with him a few times being a special forces captain on select missions. Small dang world or what?
βWell Iβll be damned, Walkerβ I say to him
βWhat do you think youβre doing here, Captain Syverson?β he says right on back.
We both break out in grins, the fake bravado falling away.
He gives me a slap on the back.
βClearly you know Everlyβ he motions with his head to her in my arms. Sheβs got her head curled up against my chest.
βYes I do..she lives here..?β I ask, confused.
I follow him through his extravagant house, big and luxurious.
We get to the pool house, and itβs a decent size.
β..key?β I ask him.
He comes around to my other side where Everlyβs bag hangs. Thereβs a front pocket where her key is, but it ainβt no traditional key. Itβs some fancy keycard that Walker waves over some high tech lookinβ shit. We hear the lock slide open and he puts the keycard back in her bag.
βGood to see you againβ he says
βYou too, manβ
βNow you look after herβ
βI sure willβ, I tell him. He smiles and turns around, walking past the pool, and back into the main house.
I go in, closing the door with my boot, and walk on through to the lounge, and take her to the L shaped couch nearby. I lay her down on the chaise just long enough to put her bag down when she reaches for me, pulling me down, and snuggles against me. A small sigh escapin her lips. Iβm taken aback; not expecting this. I really should go. I need to finish packing my shit, but I donβt wanna.
β¦Fuck it; I ainβt goinβ until I really have to.
I carefully take my phone outta my front pocket, set an alarm, and put it back.
I look down at her, sheβs snuggled right against me; her breathing deep and even. I carefully take her glasses off, and put them on the coffee table. I tuck her back against me, her small frame fitting perfectly against mine. I sweep her baby hairs off her forehead and press my lips against it, smiling to myself.
I lay my head on top of hers, falling asleep myself.
I watch the white SUV disappear, and make my way back. Fuck, with everythinβ that ended up goinβ down I forgot to ask for Everlyβs number again. I sigh, frustrated. Well canβt do anythinβ about it now, though I know itβs gonβ bug me for the rest of the night. I donβt know when Iβll see her next. If Iβll ever see her again; you never know when itβs gonβ be your last mission in the military.
I get back in the club when Pepps, drunk as skunk, corners me.
βDayumm! You struck out too huh!? I thought you was the lucky one βcause I saw yβall walk out together, but muthafucka you back! She didnβt want yoβ grumpy ass in the end!β Heβs loud as fuck and slurrinβ all his goddamn words. Iβm surprised heβs still vertical.
βAh, shut your pie hole. Her girlβs and her had to go hospital. One of them has alcohol poisoninβ, and if you keep carryinβ on the way ya are youβre gonna be joininβ themβ, I snap at him.
At this point Pepps is too far gone, I doubt he heard any of that. He just laughs and gets distracted by some girls passinβ us, βEyyyy sweet thang, whatβs yoβ name!?β And heβs off creepinβ as usual.
I go to the bar to order another glass of whiskey when BJ comes up to me.
βHey, that was the chick Pepps blew it with, didnβt know she was your type Capβ, BJβs grinninβ like a goddamn idiot.
βIβd met her before, Everlyβs the one who took my grandparents home from the dentistβ, I tell βim as I pay for my drink.
βOh for real? Well dang, she cute; pretty name too. She ainβt look nothinβ like dem ladies you normally go home withβ
I grunt in response, takinβ a swig of my drink. Heβs right. I usually go home with girls like that blonde from earlier tonight. Tall, light hair, light eyes, and voluptuous. But I donβt know, thereβs somethinβ about Everly.
I try enjoy the rest of the night, a few ladies even wantinβ me to go home with them but for once I just wasnβt feelinβ it, my heart ainβt in it tonight nor my dick.
After a while I give up especially when the buzz of the alcohol dies. None of the boys wanna call it a night, sayinβ theyβll just get an Uber so I head back home by myself. So many thoughts runninβ through my head as I drive back in the truck. My phone vibrates and a name that Iβve seen pop-up plenty of times appears, but like Iβve said I ainβt in the mood tonight especially not for her so I ignore the call. I get inside, and try be quiet as my grandparents are sleepinβ. I brush my teeth real quick, and pass out on my bed. Visions of black gray hair and warm chocolate eyes are the last thing I remember.
Sy POV
Itβs Saturday. I ainβt feelinβ bad; I didnβt drink much, and Iβm used to havinβ little to no sleep.
We get outta church after attendinβ the 9am mass. My grandparents usually go on a Sunday but Grand Momma wanted us to go together before Iβm deployed tonight. We continue on with their routine by headinβ to the library. I try find a spot close to the entrance so my grandparents donβt gotta walk far; couldnβt find shit so we had a bit of a way to walk. I grab the pile of books from the back as Poppa helps gran outta the truck.
Iβm carryinβ the books walkinβ ahead as I see none other than the person who occupied my thoughts and seeped into dreams last night.
Well Iβll be damned; sheβs on her way to the library as well.
Sheβs wearinβ a long pale pink summer dress with a high collar beige cardigan with nude ballet flats, her hair in a messy bun.
βEverly!β I holler. I mustβve scared her βcause she looks like she about to drop her books. She turns around, her glasses slidinβ down her nose.
βJax!β She looks surprised to see me.
I catch up to her. This is the first time sheβs been beside me in somethinβ other than heels, and godfreakinβdamn she is tiny. She just comes up to my shoulderβ¦ just.
βhey darlinβ, how ya doin?β, I greet her with a big smile.
βGood morning, Syβ, she looks up at me, hoisting the books up as she pushes her glasses back up her nose.
I look down at her grinning; happy to see her right before I leave. But then I notice her eyes, thereβs prominent dark circles under them. Ones that werenβt there the last two times I saw her. Worry creeping into my stomach. Sheβs smilinβ back at me, despite how tired her eyes are. Tired she might be, sheβs looking as pretty as she did last night. Not a lick of makeup on but sometimes makeup is just the cherry on top. Sheβs the whole goddamn cupcake.
βHey, you alright? Have you rested at all after last night? Cβmon, gimme those books Iβll carry them for yaβ I grab the books off her, adding them to the pile Iβm already carrying; not giving her a chance to say no.
βYeah Iβm okay, thanks for asking. And thanks for carrying my books. Iβve slept a little, maybe three and a half hours or so..?β
I frown a bit, βThat ainβt enough, bubβ, the term of endearment just slipping out, βhow long were you in the hospital for? Is your friend okay?β
βShit, I didnβt take noteβ, she doesnβt seem to mind me calling her that. Sheβs biting her lower lip trying remember for how long. I donβt even notice my eyes are glued to them until she starts talking again, βA while to be honest. Yeah sheβs alright.. this isnβt the first time itβs happened. What about you? Did you stay at the club for much longer?β
βOh, that explains your other friendβs reaction. Naw, it got pretty borinβ after ya left. I went home not long afterβ, she smiles at that but before she can answer my grandparents finally make it to us.
βOh, Ms. Everly! What a nice surprise bumpinβ into you like thisβ, my gran says. My Poppa beside her smiling.
βGood morning Mr. and Mrs. Syversonβ, my gran goes and gives her a hug, my Poppa does too.
βNow young lady, you donβt gotta be callinβ us somethinβ so formalβ he tells her as he pats her hand, βEdith and Jeb is just fineβ
βThen you both can stop calling me Ms. Everly!β She counters back, we all laugh at that, βEverly or Evie is fineβ she winks at them.
βOh youβre a funny oneβ Poppa says chuckling, βcβmon missy, letβs go find us some books. And tell me, watcha been readingβ he gently grabs her hand and places it on his arm, linking them together. I smile. I ainβt ever seen my Poppa this warm to someone outside the family.
Gran and I let them walk in front, gran grabbing my arm to link hers through mine.
βYou know, Jax. Little Evie here reminds me a lot of your beautiful mamaβ my gran starts.
I swallow before I look at her, βOh, really?β I answer back quietly. We donβt really mention my parents that much.
βOh yeah. A sweet, kind, caring thing just like her. Both have a wittiness about them, but Evie just a touch more. Both firecrackersβ gran smiles at that; remembering her fondly, βthatβs why your daddy fell right in love with her, same with your Poppa and I. When your daddy brought Esme home for us to meet for the first time, woo. Good lord we ainβt ever had such a good time. We could see that Esme adored Jacob to bits. We were absolutely smitten with her.β I smile at that myself, a warmth spreading through my chest.
βWhen Evie came back the next day to check on your grandfather, I didnβt tell ya, but she stayed a whileβ gran confesses
βShe did..?β
βShe sure did. Turbo met her and instantly fell in love with her. That dog wouldnβt leave her alone, poor girl, he was always jumping on her. And your granddaddy absolutely loved her company. They went out for a long walk with Turbo together. Just chattinβ. Surprised the good heavens outta me, I havenβt seen your granddaddy that fond of someone since your mama. He even offered to teach her how to drive a stick betterβ gran laughed at that. Her and Poppa talking about Everly or being around her makes them light up. I couldnβt figure out why until now.
βWhy didnβt yβall tell me this earlier?β I ask.
Gran shrugs, βI donβt know to be honest with ya, honey. I guess we were both a bit shocked to meet someone who reminded us so much of your motherβ, weβre walking slowly immersed in our conversation, βitβd been a while since we saw Evie, it felt like a dream ya know? But then seeing her at the clinic and her being there with us that entire time, looking after me, even assisting for me even though she was meant to be having her lunch, solidified that it was real.β
Iβm thinking deep now βcause it ainβt only gran and Poppa getting fond of this girl, and itβs been a long time since Iβve felt somethinβ even remotely close to this..
Awwww β€οΈ I love his relationship with grandparents. I can feel the southern warmth coming through the words like a blanket wrapping around me and making me a bit homesick for my own grandparents. Wonder if heβll actually get her number this time lol

Big thanks to @firefly-graphics for the stunning dividers!
It felt good, it felt so fucking good to be free. To not have to worry about anyone else other than myself. To have no other responsibilities or obligations other than TO myself.
I havenβt been this free for a longggg time.
It felt strange. Foreign. Unknown. Good, but also scary.
Iβve just worked a 12-hour shift, but instead of doing what I used to do, I'm out with my girlβs living it up.
7am-7pm: Work with only a half an hour break. I should be exhausted, and I am. But thatβs what energy drinks are for.
I go home, get ready, late as dinner, and then out into the clubs. Everyoneβs already a little buzzed having had two or three drinks at the restaurant. Vodka Redbull my poison of choice. Who said energy drinks couldnβt be more fun?
I can hear Leaβs voice in my head: βHave fun but take care and be careful, sis!β
She didnβt come with. She went home to be with her man, Eric, and her adorable son, Isaac. Sheβs like the mother hen of the group. I guess her partying days are behind her. Iβm late to mine.
It must be our lucky night because we barely had to wait in the queue for long; weβre ushered into the club by the bouncers. Second club of the night and weβre hoping this one was a good one. We werenβt vibing with the music of the other place. .
The place is packed. The music booming hard through the speakers. Everyone seems to be having a good time.
Shayla has sashayed her fine self straight to the dance floor dragging me along with her; Lydia straight to the bar. Casey right behind us pushing Lauren ahead.
βYouβre gonna have a damn good time and forget about work for once in your life!β I hear Casey yell.
Lauren had a tough day with difficult procedures and challenging patients. I wouldnβt know the extent.. I was too bloody busy running between general, orthodontics, and periodontics. Iβm scared to see how many steps Iβve taken today, and the nightβs not even over yet.
I feel Shayla dance closer to me smiling like thereβs a little devil on her shoulder.
βSo is tonight the night? You finally gonβ take someone home?β, She winks at me trying to be slick.
Every time weβre out she tries to set me up with every Tom, Dick, and Harry that she can get her hands on.
I laugh and roll my eyes at her. Iβm gonna gap before she can sucker me into anything. I point to the bar letting them know I want a drink, and to also find Lydia.
I push myself through all the bodies shouting a never ending chorus of βexcuse me, pardon meβ trying hard to get through all these gigantors when I finally make it to one of the ends of the really long bar.
βHeyyy, little one!β Lydia slurs, and grabs me for a hug. Sheβs had a few.
The rest of the girls follow behind me and we all order two rounds of wet pussy shots; we down them quickly when we hear someone come and approach us.
βWassup ladiesβ, his voice is cocksure and stupid loud.
He comes on right over to me, and puts his arm around me.
βYo, shorty. What they call ya, huh?β, the arrogance of this boy is just oozing out of him.
I grab his arm, shaking my head, dropping it fast beside him.
βFirst of all I ainβt your βshortyβ, bro. Second of all, donβt be putting your hands on meβ
βOoo sorry, mah bayd. Lemme buy ya a drink to apologize'', he winks thinking heβs real cute.
βHow βbout if you guess my age right you can have my number otherwise you can piss right offβ, I grin big; knowing he wonβt be able to succeed. No one has been able to get this shit right. This is the surefire way to get rid of him.
βDamnnnn girl, you feisty lil thang!β
I roll my eyes at him, just waiting for him to answer.
The sudden confidence is gone but he answers nonetheless
β21β
The girlβs and I laugh.
βLater, bo!β, we wave his ass goodbye. This always gets rid of unwanted attention quick.
Next thing you know our jam comes on. The timing couldnβt have been any more perfect. Shayla starts hollering, and I canβt help but join in too.
Itβs time to get our asses back on the dance floor. And thatβs exactly what we do.
Weβre all pushed up together, rapping along with the song, dancing, having a damn good time.
Our fave part comes on and I canβt help but slide on over to Lauren, putting her hands on my hips as I back it up on her. I can hear her laugh and sway along with me, cracking up even louder as I drop it wayyy down, and start twerking on her. The other girls are laughing, egging us on as she gets into it. I get back up laughing and turn around to give Lauren a hug.
βAnd there you have the Evie special; just for you tonightβ, I shout over the music into her ear.
βAwww, you lil shit. You always know how to cheer me upβ. She hugs me back tight, a grin on her face as we pull away.
We dance a bit longer when I suddenly donβt feel too good. The sleep deprivation is finally catching up with me. The air is thick and heavy, and with barely any water in me and all this alcohol I need fresh air.
I tell Lauren Iβm gonna step out for a bit and I push through the bodies to make my way through the back. Opening the door as I make my way outside and step into the cold night air.
The fresh air was just what I was after; it was getting hot in there, and I needed a breather. I focus on the air filling my lungs when I let out a small breath. I hear the door slam shut loudly, but I pay it no mind.
βLooks like ya need thisβ, I hear a familiar voice over the music and bass from inside the club.
I crack an eye open and look to my right. Surprised to see who it is.
ββ¦Jax?β A small smile tugs on my lips.
Heβs standing there in a black skin tight v-neck shirt his dog tags peeking under, black jeans that fit him in all the right places, brown leather belt, and black leather boots. This man loves the colour black. I catch myself staring at him longer than I should. He not only looks good in uniform but also out of it, too.
βYes, maβam. But didnβt I tell ya to call me Sy?β He grins as he holds out a bottle of cold water to me.
βSorry, Captainβ, I smirk as I take the water from him, our fingers touching briefly.
I open it and scull it; not realising how thirsty I am. I can feel his eyes on me as I wipe away a bit of water that escapes and drips down from the corner of my lips.
βThanks for thisβ I say holding up the water.
I see his eyes flicker from the water bottle to my mouth. He quickly clears his throat.
βPleasureβs mine.. mind if I come join ya?β He asks me, an inquisitive look on his face.
βNot at allβ I smile at him and motion to the wall beside me.
He sauntered over to me, leaning against the wall before crossing his arms, the action highlighting how big his biceps are.
βLooks like you were havinβ a grand olβ time in thereβ he says with a smirk.
I look up at him, eyebrow raised βoh, really now? What makes you say that, huh?β Iβm curious now.
He laughs, βthose dance moves looked interestinββ his eyes mischievous.
βOh, donβt be telling your grandparents that!β My eyes wide.
βWhy not?β, Mofo has a shit eating grin on his face.
βBecause I have a reputation to upholdβ
βOh, do ya now?β Heβs teasing me now; a glint in his eye.
βI sure do. Waitβ¦ you were watching me, eh? Now tell me Captain, for how long?β
βFrom the moment one of my boys got shut downβ he threw his head back laughing, his whole body shaking, his eyes crinkled in the corners.
βFrom then, eh? You know that cocky son of a bitch!?β Iβm laughing too, surprised.
βYes, maβam. Heβs one of the younger ones in my squad. A frickinβ tactical genius which is probably why heβs so goddamn cockyβ
βThat makes senseβ, I nod, βhold upβ¦what are you doing here? This doesnβt look like a place youβd hang out inβ
βThe boys from the squad and I are havinβ our last hurrah before weβre deployed again, we somehow ended up hereβ Sy forces a small smile but itβs tight and doesnβt reach his eyes .
The atmosphere shifts; no longer light and playful.
βOh.. when do you leave?β, I ask him softly.
βTomorrow nightβ, Sy turns away from me, he looks straight ahead of him, staring at the road in front of us, his eyes pensive.
βFor how long?β
βAt the moment six months, but ya never know. Could be extendedβ, heβs still looking ahead; nodding slightly.
βBetter make the most of your night then, eh? Donβt waste what little time you have left with me! Go back in there and have some funβ, Iβm smiling as I motion my head towards the club and nudge him with my shoulder trying to lighten the mood, βgo get fucked up with your boys and get some sugarβ I wink at him grinning.
He laughs, βNaw someoneβs gotta look out for these imbeciles plus who said I ainβt havinβ fun out here with youβ, he nudges me back with his shoulder, smiling.
βOh yeah, discussing my dodgy dance moves eh?β
ββUte, dodgy, ehβ what in tarnations is this kind of vocabulary?β Sy smirks at me βoh, good lord you ainβt no British Canadian are ya!?β
I laugh, βno but who the hell says βtarnationsβ in this day and age, huh?β I tease him right back βMr. Syverson isnβt really your granddad, eh? Heβs your brother isnβt he, you old fart?β
βNow who in the hell are you callinβ an old fart, huh? Just βcause you be one of dem young folk in their 20βs, goddamn smartass delinquent with that blasphemous dancinββ, heβs laying the southern accent on thick now, taking the piss which just makes me laugh especially as he frowns looking just like his grandfather.
βHey Iβm young but I ainβt that young, old manβ
βDo I get the same deal as Pepps? If I guess right, youβll gimme your number?β He asks me, wiggling his eyebrows, making me laugh more.
βI donβt knowβ, I shrug, βyouβre probably too old for me, sirβ
βOh cβmon now, I ainβt that oldβ heβs smiling big, his eyes shining as he grins at me.
He looks different when heβs smiling and laughing like this; younger, happier. I canβt help but smile and laugh back. His good mood is infectious.
I canβt be thinking like this though. Canβt be getting attracted to someone; someone like him. This definitely isnβt what Iβm here for. I didn't move all this way for this.
Before I can respond and tell him the truth the door opens and one of my girlβs comes over. Itβs Shayla with a worried look etched on her beautiful ebony face
βThere you are, LO. Iβve been looking all over for you. We gotta get goin, baby girl. Lydiaβs been puking non-stop. We think itβs alcohol poisoning. AGAINβ, she shakes her head, rolling her eyes. This is why the girls werenβt big fans of her.
βFuck, I hope sheβs okay. Sorry, Sy. I better get goingβ I push myself off the wall. I turn to Sy looking him in the eyes. He looks worried himself now, too.
βNo need to apologize, darlinββ his eyebrows are furrowed, βyβall need help? I can take yβall over to the hospitalβ
βNaw, Lydiaβs mom is here. Weβre about to head on over there but thanksβ Shayla says.
βAlright, well Iβll walk yβall ladies to the carβ, Sy says as he follows beside me, his large hand on the small of my back.
We make our way through the club as quickly as we can despite the difficulty with how busy it is. Sy doesnβt leave my side the entire time, pushing through the crowds for me with his gigantic frame, keeping me safe from being trampled on, tucking me securely against his side.
We make it outside; the crisp cool air waking us up. Casey is standing there waiting for us to take us to the car. A grimace on her face.
We walk just a little up the street when I see Lydiaβs mumβs large seven seater Audi Q7. Lydiaβs not looking great sitting in the passenger seat, resting her head against the glass window, holding a bag to her face.
The girls start piling in, and I turn to my side to say bye to Sy.
βThanks for offering to take us to the hospital; thatβs real kind of you,β I look up at him with a small smile, craning my neck up even with heeled boots on, βthanks for the water againβ itβs windy and my hair flies into my face, getting stuck on my lips, stupid lip gloss.
Sy helps me push my hair out of my face as he pulls me in for a hug.
βItβs no problem at all. Iβm sorry about your friend; I had a good time chattinβ witβ ya though,β his voice is muffled by my hair as he whispers in my ear.
βI did, tooβ, Iβm surprised but I hug him back. Iβm almost balancing on the tips of my boots, heβs hunched over engulfing me in a warm, tight, hug with his massive body.
Iβm about to let go but he holds on a little longer, his face buried in my hair.
Lydiaβs mum gets impatient and puts the window down, βEvie sweetie, we gotta get goinβ she says, her voice urgent.
As Sy and I separate he tucks my hair behind my ear. Itβs like heβs taking every chance he can get to touch me and draw out this goodbye as long as possible.
βAlright you take care now, Everly. I hope your friend will be alrightβ his smile is tight.
I give him a quick smile as I clamber into the SUV, and thank him for the hundredth time as Lydiaβs mum drives away. I watch him become a tiny speck on the sidewalk as we make our way to the hospital.
Iβd been home for a bit; relieved to finally have some type of rest. Happy to be with my grandparents again, the joy of cookinβ for them somethinβ I absolutely love to do. I head into town needinβ to grab a few things. I park my truck at the grocery store countinβ things off my head in terms of what I need to get for dinner. I kill the engine about to hop on out when I see a certain someone leavinβ the store.
I see Everly in navy blue scrubs, a black long sleeve top, her long black gray hair tied up in a messy bun. Sheβs carryinβ a bunch of groceries walkinβ alongside Georgia Anderson who is hobblinβ along in a cast and crutches. Iβd heard from gran that Georgia broke her leg after fallinβ down the stairs. I overhear them as they stop by a car near me. Everly loading her groceries for her.
βOh thank you so much, sweet girl. Youβre such an angel helping me out,β Georgia smiles at Everly, βnow let me thank you by dropping you off home, sweetie. Itβs the least I can doβ
βYouβre welcome. And itβs okay. You donβt have toβ Everly smiles back, politely declining her offer.
βOh, it ainβt no trouble at all. Plus you donβt live that far from me.β Georgia insists. Not takinβ no for an answer.
βAre you sure?β
βNo doubt, missy. Now cβmon and jump inβ, Georgia waves her in. Everly helps her into the car first; takinβ her crutches and poppinβ them at the back before climbinβ in the front.
They drive away talkinβ and laughinβ. I canβt help but smile to myself. Seems like Everly is the townβs guardian angel.
Sy POV
How the fuck did I end up in an R&B/hip hop club late on a Friday? Who the fuck knows?
One minute the men and I are bar hoppinβ from one dive to another, and the next thing I know Iβm in this godforsaken place.
Everyoneβs pretty hammered, I ainβt feelinβ too bad. Someoneβs gotta keep an eye out for these numbnuts, and I guess βcause Iβm their captain that goddamn responsibility automatically ended up fallinβ on me.
This ainβt my usual scene and I ainβt really feelinβ it, but with glasses of whiskey to stomach this place who am I to say no?
The boys have let loose, shit talkinβ, and tryna get laid before we get deployed again, Iβm just here for the ride.
The place is packed, the lights low, the bar a shininβ neon beacon for anyone and everyone that wants to get fucked up.
The music is loud, bass reverberating through the building as thereβs people all over the place; some dancinβ on the dance floor, grindinβ on each other. Some around the bar takinβ shots and drinkinβ their night away. Some just chillinβ with their friends on some leather seats spread around the joint.
The boys make a beeline for the bar, and I ainβt too far behind them.
Weβre pushinβ our way through the sweaty bodies when we finally make it.
A round of tequila shots get ordered, and I get myself a Jack on the rocks.
The boys are loud, obnoxiously so but what else would you get with a bunch of single men in their 20βs and 30βs tryna blow off some steam? Iβm feelinβ my age nearinβ 40. Iβm gettinβ too old for this shit.
Iβm pulled outta my thoughts when I hear Pepps.
βGodfuckingdamn, who are those fine as ladies!?β He hollers loud as fuck, a hand on his chest, the other against his mouth.
I roll my eyes. Theyβve started huntinβ.
I pay no mind just sippinβ on my whiskey when someone approaches me.
βHey, youβ they whisper into my ear.
I turn to see a hot blonde on my right. Sheβs tall, nearly my height with heels on. Sheβs got green eyes and her lips are painted red which matches her short, tight, red dress.
Iβm about to say somethinβ when I see Pepps in the corner of my eye approach a group of ladies, Iβm guessinβ the one he was losinβ his mind over just a second ago.
Somethinβ makes me stop and look; squinting tryna get a better look.
One of them ladies look familiar, sheβs got long gray hair when it clicks..
βSorry maβam, if youβll excuse meβ, I tell the blonde.
She doesnβt look too impressed, her sultry look quickly turning into a scowl, no longer lookinβ as hot as she did.
βWhateverβ she rolls her eyes at me, stompinβ away in them heels.
I ainβt bothered. My curiosity has gotten the better of me.
I make my way to the boys and theyβre all laughinβ
βWhatβs that fool doinβ now?β I ask BJ as I take a sip of my drink.
βThat muthafucka thinks he has a shot with that girl with the long black gray hairβ BJ splutters out, nearly chokinβ on his beer.
I look over and my instinct was rightβ¦ itβs Everly.
I watch Pepps walk on right over with the swagger of a hundred rappers.
A sly look in his eye and a cocky smirk on his face. I gotta give the kid somethinβ, heβs got balls especially puttinβ his arm around her. She grabs his arm, and drops it by his side shakinβ her head. The boys start crackinβ up.
That doesnβt deter Pepps though. Heβs talkinβ tryna get an in.
Suddenly Everly smiles, big and bright, and says somethinβ. Pepps suddenly not lookinβ as confident. He takes a minute to think before he finally decides to answer. It mustβve been wrong βcause the all girlβs laugh and wave him goodbye.
He comes on back over lookinβ confused.
βShe donβt want ya, huh?β I say grinninβ.
βShe said sheβd gimme her number if I guessed her age rightβ he says.
We laugh. Fool. Good luck guessinβ an Asians correct age. Male or female. No one can tell.
βWhatβd you guess?β I ask curious.
β21β he says with no hesitation.
βNah man, I bet you sheβs nearly 40β BJ chimes in.
βNo fucking way, I bet you late 20βs like 28β, Pat offers up.
They all take turns guessinβ. I ainβt even gonna try.
The song changes and I see Everly and her girlβs make their way to the dance floor, clearly a fan of this song. The boys still debating amongst themselves.
βMy bitch love Coco! Woo back, baby!β It comes loud through the speakers.
I ainβt seen her since she was at the store in her scrubs two nearly three weeks ago, and by god does she look different outta them.
Sheβs on the dance floor laughin, rappinβ along with the song, her girlβs and her clearly havinβ a good time.
Theyβre all dancinβ together, close as fuck. When I see her slide on over in front of one of her friends, grab their hands placinβ them on her hips as she starts backinβ it up, grindinβ against her.
The boys mustβve noticed how quiet Iβd been βcause they look on over to see her drop it down, shakinβ her ass in time to the lyrics.
βAnd I got a bad bitch, ass up
Face down (Face down), yeah, she love doggy style (Uh-huh)β
She starts mock twerkinβ and jumps up laughing, all the girls do too as she grabs her friend behind her, giving her a hug.
They continue dancing together, and the boys and I look at each other. Eyes wide.
βHot damn..β Pepps mutters.
βDude, you never had a chance with herβ, BJ wheezes out, he canβt stop laughinβ over Pepps confidence.
I laugh and shake my head, draining the rest of my drink.
Well, this is certainly a different Everly to the one Iβd met at the clinic.
She dances for a bit longer and then goes and whispers something in her friendβs ear, and starts making her way to one of the doors at the back.
The boys have moved onto JΓ€gerbombs as I go and buy a bottle of water, and start to make my way towards Everlyβs direction.
Pepps already scopinβ the place out for his next victim.
I make it outside, the door closing with a loud clang when I see her to my left. Sheβs leaning against the brick wall, legs semi bent, head turned up towards the night sky with her eyes closed.
I donβt head over straight away; Iβm too busy admirinβ her.
Sheβs got a full face of makeup on nothing too much, but enough to enhance her looks.
Her long hair is out, sheβs wearing a snug ribbed long sleeved dress accentuating her figure with tight suede thigh high boots. Fuck, she looks good, too fuckinβ good.
The thumping of the bass from inside makes the wall shake as she lets out a small breath.
Friendly reminder that the reason you feel so much better is because of your meds, donβt stop taking them unless you talk to your doctor first, you really do need them, I promise.Β
Around June I stopped taking my eye medication because I hadnβt had a problem with my eyes in months. I got really lazy about doing it; then I stopped them altogether.
Turns out, the reason I stopped having problems with my eyes was because I was religiously taking my medication. Whodathunk. Now I have to work to get back to the place I was before I decided I wasΒ βbetterβ (I wasnβt!).
If you thought this post was just about anti-depressants or lithium, it could be! For me, this post is about eyedrops, for you it might be about antibiotics, or it might be about zoloft. Whatever it is, please consider talking to your doctor before making a sudden shift to stop taking it. Itβs not bad to be on medication. Itβs not bad to need it.Β
β¦and on a related note, do not let anyone tell you that because you start feeling worse if you donβt take your medication, that means youβreΒ βaddictedβ. That is not how addiction works.

hold on a fucking second. delaware is a state?? i thought it was a river? or is the river more important than the state? why don't i know this? (i should mention i don't like in america, i'm just confused)
there is delaware (state) and delaware (river)Β
both are equally strange
the state is a tiny little cryptid thing
the rive is a monster that spans new york, pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. also washington crossed it once and that was like kinda a big deal i guess. like crossing the rubicon in rome.
the state tries to me more important with itsΒ βim the first state!!!β bs (seriously its even on the fucking license plates) but we all know. its the river.
I know home depot, but dude I don't know anything about America mad have never been there. Are you sure there is not a some sort of store called something close to Delaware!?!
Pausing here to point out that op isΒ βdear-AO3β³ and now Iβm wondering if Delaware fanfic would be categorized as RSF (real state fic) or AU (alternate unitedstates)
