I was damn lucky. It was only a recon mission, and I was even luckier that we managed to finish it early without havinโ any casualties. I sigh; Iโm really getting too old for this shit. I should quit while Iโm ahead. Iโve been feelinโ like this for a loonngg time but havenโt made moves to do anythinโ else. But with the recent news I feel like itโs time to find somethinโ else. My grandparents are gettinโ along and with Pop havinโ a stroke this is the push I need to find somethinโ that aintโ active duty. Maybe I can train soldiers or some shit, become a paper pusher on base but one thing is for sure, I canโt be riskinโ my life no more.
The boys and I arrive on base. Some offerinโ to take me home but I need time to myself first. Time to think alone. โCause I know once Iโm with my family I ainโt gonโ be alone for a long time.
I get BJ to drop me off at the diner; wantinโ to get somethinโ in me. Iโm starvinโ and a coffee and some grub will do me some good.
I changed outta uniform on base, and am in civilian clothin wearin a hat. It feels weird beinโ on this side. Iโd been in uniform 24/7 for the last three months.
Iโm sittinโ at the back mindin my business when I see two ladies walk in from the corner of my eye. I pay them no mind until I hear a voice thatโs been stuck in my head for months
โThank you, Jebus! Iโve been dying for a feed for agesssโ, Everly says. She looks like sheโs been out late into the night and all morninโ. I look at my watch; itโs 6am. Sheโs wearing a tight white long sleeved v-neck top thatโs tucked into some really tight ripped jeans and some strappy heelsโฆfuck. Itโs been three months since Iโve last seen her and she still looks so fuckinโ good.
โGood lord girl, that Kiwi slang is gonโ kill me one dayโ her friend Shayla teases her.
โYouโll get used to it, boโ, Everly winks at her as they make their way to a table diagonally in front of me. I didnโt realize that Lea had been sittinโ there that entire time.
They greet her and start orderinโ some food. I canโt help but stare at Everly.
โSweet baby Jesus, I need to use the restroom. Lilโ one, didnโt you say you needed to as well?โ, Shayla asks Everly as she gets up
โYeah but you go first. Iโm psyching myself up in going. Bodysuits are not ideal for the loo, you know?โ, sheโs playing around with the salt and pepper shakers.
โWhat the heck, girl. Next time wear somethinโ thatโs fast accessโฆ for other things as wellโ, Shayla winks at her as she makes her way to the restroom
Everly just rolls her eyes and shakes her head. She turns to Lea.
โSis, it was just meant to be dinner and drinks. It turned into clubbing!โ, Everly gathers her hair and puts it up in a high ponytailโฆgoddamn her hair is so long. I shake my head, hopinโ that will rid me of my questionable thoughts about her. She just walks into the goddamn diner, and sheโs already got me. And she donโt even know it.
โChica, what did you expect? Itโs Shayla!โ, Lea chastises her.
โUgh, sheโs trying to set me up with this guy from the club..AGAINโ, Everly mutters out.
โWell, are you going to tell her?โ
โTell her what exactly?โ
โUhhh, I donโt knowโฆ that youโre married!โ, Lea sputters out
Everly throws her head back, groaning.
โUuugggghhhhhh, last time I told someone that it went swimminglyโ,
โWell if you want her to stop bugging you, you tell her. Plus sheโs gonna kick your ass if she finds out youโve been keeping it from her this entire timeโ
โAnd what exactly is thatโ, Shayla is back and slides on right beside Lea, looking between the two.
โHmmm, that Iโm not ready to date or go out or do anything yet with anyoneโ
โBabygirl! What about that guy from last night! Dang, he was fiine. Like fucking fineโ, Shayla starts fanning herself to illustrate how apparently good lookinโ this guy was; I canโt help but sneer
โIโm goodโ, is all Everly says looking down at her manicured hand; trying to avoid eye contact.
โWell that fake wedding ring is sure doing a fine job of keeping them away! If I hadnโt told him he wouldโve missed his shot. Cartier even, damn girl you bad and boujee for a ruseโ
Lea is dead quiet as Everly winces. Shayla picks up on the shift of the mood.
โโฆwait a dang secondโฆ it is fake right..?โ, Shayla asks slowly.
โAnd Iโm going to the restroom, excuse meโ, Lea nudges Shayla to give her space to get out. She successfully escapes leaving Everly on her own to deal with Shayla.
โYeah about thatโฆโ, Everlyโs scratching her head a grimace on her face
โHoly fucking shit, youโre actually married for real!? EVERLY KAIA RAKENA!โ, the pure disbelief is evident on Shaylaโs face
โSshhh, not so loud!โ, Everly tries to shush her but Shayla is on a roll.
โBut not long, right? Canโt you get this shit annulled like ASAP?โ, Shayla asks
โYeah โcause 10 years isnโt a legitimate marriage, ehโ, Everly mumbles out
โ10 YEARS!?โ, Shayla practically yells.
โOh my god, Shayla. Keep it down!โ, Everly hisses at her.
Fuck, even at this point Iโd been caught wayyy off guard. I start choking on my food, needing coffee to wash it down. 10 years!? A whole goddamn decade!? How old is this girl!? I try be quiet to not draw attention to myself; luckily theyโre too absorbed in their conversation to notice much of anything else.
โYouโve gotta be shittinโ me, right? This is some dumb prank youโre pullinโ on meโ,
Leaโs back and reads the room, Shayla getting out so that Lea can get back in.
โWait.. you knew this entire time!?โ, Shaya spits out
โWho do you think picked her up from the airport!?โ, Lea snaps back
At this point Everly just has her hands in her head, shaking it. Their food arrives givinโ them the time they need for shit to cool down.
โGirl, I expect you to tell me every dang thing about this 10 year marriage of yoursโ, Shayla demands as they start eating their food. Everly having gotten pancakes like last time.
โTrust me, itโs not as exciting as you think it isโ, Everly mumbles over her food.
โPfft, yeah right!โ
โWell why do you think Iโm here! Itโs not that exciting if Iโm on the other side of the world!โ, Everly exclaims
โSo this is the break you were tellinโ me about, huh?โ, as Shayla sips on her coffee.
โIt sure is. Iโd like to thank Lea for thatโ
โIt was my idea for her to take a year break, preferably in a different countryโ, Lea offers up.
'โGoddamn, what happened?โ, Shayla asks. The initial anger of not knowinโ shit is gone now, she just looks worried.
โUgh, thatโs for another timeโ, Everly looks down at her phone, โAnyway, Lea we better get going soon. I need to check up on Jeb and keep Edie companyโ
โOf course, sisโ
โGirl, you is gonโ need a Redbullโ
โI sure do. Can we stop by a gas station so I can get one please?โ Everly asks Lea. Lea nods.
โDo you need to stop by yours to grab anything?โ, Lea offers
โNah, should be all good. I think I have enough clothesโ
โWait, what? Have you been staying at the Syversonโs?โ, Shayla asks, eyebrow raised.
โYeah I have. It got hard going back and forth between mine and theirs so Edie offered for me to stay with them. Plus I didnโt like that Edie was all by herself in that house when she wasnโt at the hospitalโ, Everly explains, โif you guys will excuse me, Iโll be right backโ.
She gets up and goes to the restroom while the rest of the girlโs keep on eatinโ.
โ...Is she okay?โ, Shayla asks Lea once Everly is out of earshot.
โHmmm, she will be. Sheโs been through a lot.. I know she doesnโt show it especially when sheโs out and about with yโall. She's too goddamn busy being a clown and making everyone laugh, but sheโs been through hell and back, and I donโt just mean her marriage. Promise me youโll keep an eye on her when I ainโt around?โ, Leaโs got a concerned look on her face; you can tell she really cares about Everly.
โFor sure. You donโt even need to askโ
Everly comes back and the girlโs change the subject. They donโt chat much as they finish their food, not staying much longer as they pay and make their way to the parking lot.
My mind is still reeling from the info I just found out. Not only about how long Everlyโs been married but that fact sheโs been looking after my grandparents this entire time. Gran hadnโt mentioned anythinโ about Everly. Not only that I know the guest room hasnโt been ready in years, having become a makeshift storage room. Iโd been meaning to tidy it out but havenโt had the time. I can take one guess in where Everlyโs been sleepingโฆ
Iโd been itching to get to the hospital to see Pop, but I hadnโt realized till I got there that he ainโt the only one Iโd been dyinโ to see. I know the last time I saw her it didnโt end too good, and I stormed out angry, not willinโ to listen to her. I Uber to the hospital and get there fairly quickly witโ not much traffic around; and Iโm grateful for it. I find that Iโm the first one there; relieved to have some time with granddad by myself.
Seeinโ Pop hooked up to all these machines; all these wires and shit cominโ outta him breaks my goddamn heart. I didnโt realize Iโd be this affected until I actually got here. In my mind heโs always been big and strong; forever my hero in my heart and soul but the reality is the stroke had done him no good. Iโve never seen him so gaunt in my whole damn life.. Almost like heโs witherinโ away but hanginโ on by a thread. I can feel my heart breakinโ listeninโ to the machines beepinโ, seeinโ Popโs chest go up and down in rough inhale and exhale.
Iโve seen grown men and women die for their country; witnessed them blown to bits, blood and guts everywhere. But seeinโ Pop look almost lifeless like this hits differently.
I feel my eyes tearinโ up but I wipe them away quickly; angry that I hadnโt been here when it happened but also so goddamn relieved that I made it back witโ him still kickinโ, even if he is currently unconscious.
I sit there right against Popโs hospital bed; his frail hand in mine, holdinโ it against my lips as I look on at him, and remember all the things heโs ever done for me. Grateful and so dang lucky to have him as my Poppa.
Yeah I lost my father young; and pains me deep. But this man right in front of me, has not only been a grandfather but a dad, too.
Heโs been there for me through everythinโ. The devastation of losing my parents, first fight I got into at school โcause some redneck dick was bullying the new Asian kid in town, taught me how to drive a stick, first heartbreak with Lily-Beth, betrayal from Wyatt, puttinโ up witโ me when I fell into underage drinkinโ and fuckinโ around left, right, and center, and then supportinโ me when I joined the Army. How proud he was when I was made Captain.
My grandparents have been a solid rock in my life. I donโt know how long Iโd been sitting there; so lost in my thoughts about everythinโ we've been through together. Reminiscing about the past; nostalgia pullinโ me deep down. Iโd been starinโ into space; so outta focus that I donโt even realize that Gran had arrivedโฆ with Everly.
Theyโre surprised. I hadnโt told Gran I was on my way home. Gran comes around the bed; coming over to give me a hug. Everly frozen at the door; her big brown eyes wide.
โOh, Jax. Thank the good Lord, youโre hereโ, Gran hugs me so tight, sheโs trembling, crying.
โGran, itโs alright. Iโm here now, Iโm hereโ, I hug her back just as tightly, rubbing her back trying to comfort her. Itโs real hard seeinโ Pop like this; I canโt even imagine what Gran is feelinโ right now. If I'm feelinโ this bad, she must be feeling it a hundred times worse. Pop is the love of her life; her soulmate. I just canโt imagine one without the other.
I look up to see Everly hoverinโ at the periphery of the room. I can tell sheโs wantinโ to give us a moment alone; a moment of privacy.
Gran lets go, wipinโ her tears away, and turns around to motion for Everly to come over. Sheโs changed out of her heels and is now wearing some ballet flats. Sheโs also thrown on a long nude cardigan that stops just above her knees. Sheโs put her hair back down, her long black gray hair cascading down her back, her side bangs framing her face. She comes over slowly, apprehensive, but sheโs got a small nervous smile on her face.
Gran puts her arm around Everly, tuckinโ her against herself, holding her close.
โEvieโs been nothinโ but the kindest, most thoughtful angel; being my constant companion while youโve been away; I didnโt feel so alone havinโ her stay in the house. Taking me to and from the hospital everyday, even finishing work early for me.โ, Gran looks over to Everly, โI donโt know what I wouldโve done without you, sweet girlโ and gives her a kiss on her head. Everly wraps arms around Gran, squeezing her tight.
โOf course. Any timeโ, she answers.
Seeing them like this makes my heart swell. I canโt believe how kind and caring this girl has been, especially considerinโ how I left when we last saw each other. I need to thank her; truly thank her โcause I donโt know anyone who would go as far as she has for my family. And that means so much more than the world to me.
โJax, Evie, can yaโll get me somethinโ to eat at the hospital cafeteria, please? A coffee and a turkey sandwich would be niceโ, Granโs voice breaks through my thoughts, and I look over to Everly. Sheโs waitinโ on me to say somethinโ, to make a move.
Gran thinks sheโs being slick but I know what sheโs up to. I know she wants me to go and fix things with Everly. Which is all good โcause thatโs exactly what I wanna do, too.
โCourse, Gran. Anythinโ else?โ, I ask her.
โNaw, but grab yourselves somethinโ if yโall are hungryโ, she tells me as she tries to hand me some cash; I wave her hand away as I start makinโ my way out, Everly following quietly behind me.
โNo rush, yโall. Take your timeโ, if Gran could have a shit eatinโ grin on her face, this is what itโd look like. I shake my head; grinninโ. She thinks sheโs really slick. She sits down on the chair beside Pop, taking his hand in hers as she starts talkinโ to him.
I stand and wait for Everly as she catches up with me. I can tell she donโt know what to make of me and the situation, and I donโt blame her.
โHey, ba- Everlyโ, I quickly cough tryna mask what I really wanted to call her; though I know it ainโt right of me to do so.
โHey, Jax..โ, sheโs walking slow beside me, starinโ down at her flats, her hands shoved into the pockets of her cardigan. Everlyโs cautious; unsure.
โHow ya been?โ, I ask her. And I am genuinely curious. I wanna know everythinโ sheโs been up to these past three months.
I can see her not expectinโ that but she answers anyway.
โYeah not bad, thanksโ, she looks up at me with the tiniest of smiles; just the corner crooked up. Her eyes still look hesitant, โIโm sorry about Jeb; I truly am. I can see how much your grandparents mean to you..โ
โThanksโ, I clear my throat tryna not to get emotional.
We get to the cafeteria and get into line to grab Granโs food. Iโm scanninโ the display cabinets lookinโ to see if there was anythinโ worth munchinโ on.
โCan I get ya anythinโ?โ, I offer.
โNo, thank youโ, she shakes her head; always so polite.
โWould you be up to splittinโ a muffin witโ me?โ, I suggest. Everly looks a bit confused but says yes anyway.
I ordered Grans food to go, a muffin for Everly and I, and another coffee for myself. I get given a table number, and I make my way to one of the tables at the back corner, secluded from the majority of the folk around. Everly looks between the table and the way back to Poppaโs hospital room; clearly confused. I wait for her to get to me; gesturinโ for her to take the bench with the comfortable cushioned backrest and seat. I pull the chair out; takinโ a seat.
I wake to the sharp shrill of an alarm, luckily itโs turned off quickly. I groan, my neck is stiff from having slept funny.
I slowly open my eyes, blinking when I realise Iโm wrapped up in large, heavy, warm arms.
โBoobie, what time is it?โ I groan out, rubbing my eyes, shit doesnโt look right. I feel a rumble of laughter under me and a deep voice answers. One Iโm not accustomed to waking up to.
โThat a new nickname for me huh, baby?โ
I jerk up and look to my side in horror, a sick feeling sinking in my stomach. I scramble looking for my glasses when I feel them on the coffee table.
Itโs not who I think it is, and Iโm not where I think I am. It hasnโt been long, and sometimes Iโm disoriented when I wake up.
โFuck, oh my god. Iโm so sorry. Ho-how did we end up here?โ, I ask Sy. I hold my hands tight together trying to stop them from shaking.
โIt ainโt nothinโ, sweet pea. You dozed off in the truck. I carried ya in after Walker helped me. I popped ya here on the couch, and ya grabbed me, holdinโ me captive before I could escapeโ Sy tries to joke with me but I feel sick. He must sense something is off because he suddenly looks confused.
โWhatโs wrong, bub? You alright?โ
I squeeze my eyes shut tight. Fuck. Thereโs no other way to say it.
โNo Iโm not alright, Iโm sorry Jax, I really am.โ
โWhat do ya mean? Why do ya keep apologizinโ?โ He looks so lost, so confused.
Thereโs nervous tension in the air. I don't want to say it but I have to. My heart is beating so fast and my chest feels tight, I feel sweat trickling down my back.
โJax, Iโm taking a year break...โ, my voice is starting to shake, I can barely look at him. โFrom my marriage. Iโm-Iโm marriedโ
The change in Sy is immediate. His eyebrows are furrowed, his lips set in a massive frown, and his shoulders are tense.
โAre ya frickinโ kiddinโ right now?โ He growls out.
I flinch. What was I expecting? Well, to be fair itโs not like I planned this shit. Shit just happened.
He gets up. And starts making his way out.
โJax...โ I start calling out to him
โNaw, Iโm outโ he snaps โall yโall women are the goddamn sameโ, he laughs shaking his head, but thereโs no humour behind it.
Before I can fully explain heโs left; Iโm too scared to go after him. Scared of what else he would say. The silence following his departure is deafening.
Sy POV
โIโm marriedโ, it plays over and over again in my head like a broken record the entire drive home.
Well ainโt that a fuckinโ daisy. The first woman in years to have finally caught more than just my eye, and sheโs goddamn fuckinโ married.
Gran had been dotinโ over this girl over the phone like thereโs no tomorrow. I ainโt gonโ lie; I didnโt put too much thought or weight into her words, but that all changed once I had finally got to meet and spend some time with her.
She was everything Gran had said. Intelligent, funny, caring, kind, genuine, and beautiful. The fact she reminds Gran and Poppa of Momma is somethinโ. My chest tightens up thinkinโ about her. My beautiful Mama.
I finally get home after mullinโ over her the entire way. My grandparents can tell somethinโ is up as I walk to my room and start packinโ my shit.
โHey honey, you were gone for a bit. Everythin alright?โ, Gran asks as she stands by my doorway.
โFineโ, I grunt in response. I donโt know what to say.
โHowโs Everly? Did yโall say goodbye to each other okay?โ Gran presses on as Poppa comes and joins us.
โOh, you donโt gotta worry about her no moreโ, I scoff real loud. I canโt even contain how Iโm feelinโ; I can usually poker face myself outta most scenarios but with anythinโ to do with Everly I canโt seem to.
โWhat do ya mean?โ Poppa mutters out. Him and gran both lookinโ confused.
โSheโs marriedโ, I spit out, โsheโs on a break at the moment; thatโs why sheโs hereโ, I donโt even mean to; but the words just come rushinโ out like verbal diarrhea
I can sense them; feel their surprise and their reaction. Though what comes outta their mouths is somethinโ I wasnโt prepared for.
โSo? That donโt mean shit, son. If sheโs here sheโs obviously here for a reasonโ, mumbles Pop.
โYโall mustโve met for a reason, dear. Why she move to the other side of the world, but winds up here. Winds up takinโ care of your granddaddyโ, Gran tries to make sense of the situation
โOh Gran, please donโt say this is โfateโ or some shit. Okay?โ
โDonโt be givinโ your gran attitude, boyโ, Pop growls out.
โI ainโt. Iโm just sayinโ this ainโt no fate. This ainโt no soulmate horseshit, okay? No โGodโs planโ, I counter back. Wondering what theyโd say to this.
โSweetheart, marriage isnโt the be all or end all of a relationship. I see somethinโ between yaโll; I do. Somethinโ I ainโt ever seen you have with anyone else. And a piece of paper ainโt gotta stop that. What is meant to be will be,โ My gran is so sure of herself and whatever this โthingโ is between Everly and I. Poppa even nods along with what sheโs saying. Theyโre being ridiculous; delusional at this point. She and I barely know each other.
โOkay whatever you say, Gran. Letโs get goinโ or Iโm gonโ be lateโ, I squeeze past them with my bag ready to get outta here. Ready to forget about Everly.
Jeb and I have made our way into the library with Sy and Edith not far behind us. Surprisingly Jeb is into sci fi books; Iโd just assume heโd be into war and/or murder mysteries. We were discussing the sci-fi classics when I find out that he found Dune an absolute bore.
โReally!? I thought youโd be a fan!โ, I exclaim in pure astonishment
โNaw darlin, just โcause itโs a classic donโt mean itโs any goodโ, he points out.
โIโm guessing youโre not gonna bother with the movie thatโs just come out?โ
โNot unless you want me to dieโ, he jokes
โOh my god, donโt say that!โ, I lightly smack the arm I have linked with Jeb; mortified heโd be joking about something like that. Canโt say he doesnโt have a sense of humour, but jeez! He definitely isnโt no spring chicken anymore.
Well that decides it; Iโm gonna scratch that off my โto readโ list. Life is too short for boring books AND movies.
Sy and Edith have finally made their way to us. Syโs massive arms book free. His grandparents go off to roam and find what they want; Sy comes and joins me.
โHey, bub. Know what youโre after?โ, heโs got the biggest smile, liviest eyes, but also thereโs a newfound warmth to them. I have no idea what he and Edith were mumbling about but it looked intense when I had looked back at them. There was a look of deep concentration on his face, as well as Ediths. Iโm curious but it also isnโt any of my business. Iโm dying to be a sticky beak, but I donโt have enough balls to ask Sy directly.
โHmmmm, Iโm not sure to be honestโ, I look up at him and heโs staring at me. Just staring. I watch his eyes just peruse my face. Examining every single and little thing he can, heโs not being subtle, and heโs definitely taking his damn time about it, too. The intensity of it gets to me and I have to look away. Iโm baffled; utterly confused. Not only by the way heโs staring at me but why heโs come to join me. I thought heโd be off doing his own thing. I had no inkling heโd want to spend time with me, especially at the library no less. Most people find the library boring.
โWell, watcha in the mood for: romance? Non-fiction? Fantasy? Contemporary? Horror? Post-apocalyptic?โ, he lists all these genres, and Iโm happy he knows so many. He doesnโt seem like your stereotypical army beefcake.
โWow, sounds like youโre a reader yourselfโ, I grin big at him.
โHaha I could say the same thing for ya especially after last night. First the club and then the library the day after, say what girlโ, thereโs a smirk painted smugly on his bloody face. I take a good look at him. Heโs in a white shirt today and blue jeans. Worn brown boots on his feet. He seems to look bloody good in anything he wears. I shake my head; I canโt get distracted by this guy.
โWell what can I say; what you see is definitely not what you getโ
โItโs been a pleasure finding that outโ
Heโs got a look in his eye. This look on his face.
โYouโre more than welcomeโ, the smart arse in me couldnโt resist. I smile before I turn away; deciding to make my way to the adult fantasy section. If I donโt get my ass into gear I can tell we could just stand there and do nothing but chat all day.
Sy stays with me the entire time. Recommending books here and there. The books I pick he ends up stealing off me; adamant heโd be more than happy to carry them for me. I tell him I have arms that work perfectly fine, but he wonโt let up. Stubborn as fuck. Am I surprised? No. I guess this is what they meant by southern hospitality. We go past the philosophy section and I see Sy eyeing some books.
โPhilosophy?โ, I ask him, an eyebrow raised.
โYeah, I got into it when I turned 17/18. Right when I joined the armyโ, he glanced at me, sucking his bottom lip into his mouth.
โ15 or 16 for me. Kant, Plato, Socrates, Descartesโ, I list off the ones I can remember. Itโs been a while since Iโve dabbled in philosophy.
โI think therefore I amโ, he quotes.
We stay there for the rest of the time; and end up sitting on the floor side by side, right against each other, just flicking through Beyond Good and Evil by Nietzche. Debating, discussing. We donโt realise how long weโd been there until Jeb and Edith finally find us. Apparently itโs been nearly two hours. Theyโre starving and are keen to get a feed.
Iโm ready to go home but Edith is insistent I go and eat at their usual diner with them. I donโt even know how itโs happening but Iโm pretty much getting suckered into spending the rest of the day with them. I donโt want to be rude so I join them but I know deep down I shouldnโt. Itโs not appropriate spending this much time with patients, especially outside of work. Looking out for them after a dental procedure is different from going out socialising with them.
Next thing I know, I'm sitting beside Sy in the booth. Cramped, pushed right up against him as his large frame takes up most of the bench. He runs so hot I can feel the heat emanating from his body.
We have the menu open in front of us.
โSee anythinโ you like, bub?โ He asked me. Heโs helping me choose something by suggesting meals.
โHmmmm, Iโll probably just get pancakesโ
โYeah? That sounds good. Got a bit of a sweet tooth, huh Sugar? Remind me what you do for work again..?โ Heโs grinning, teasing me.
โOh hush, I take real good care of my teeth! I brush AND floss every night no matter what time I get home or how tired I amโ
โPfft, no one is that dedicatedโ
โYou might not be but I amโ
He pokes his tongue out at me and I do it right back.
โNow children, behave yourselves or none of yโall will be eatinโ, Jeb scolds us; joining in on our silliness.
We all laugh, enjoying everyoneโs company. The waitress comes and takes our order. Sy and I are debating which is better: waffles or pancakes.
Iโm obviously pro pancakes and heโs for waffles.
โThatโs why waffles are superior; their crispy-ness is where itโs atโ
โNah, theyโre so dry! Pancakes are fluffy and moist. That makes them the winnerโ
At this point Edith and Jeb just let us bicker, laughing at us mostly. I swear I see them from the corner of my eye look at each other a few times; this weird look in their eyes, smiles on their faces. Itโs like they know something we donโt.
โNow Evie, tell us why you moved here. And where are ya from?โ Edith says
Weโre munching on our food now. Both the men ordered big American breakfasts plus waffles for Sy, and Edith an omelette.
Sy looks at me, eating some bacon, โYeah where the heck are you from? I still canโt figure out your weird accentโ
โMy accent isnโt that weirdโ I counter back, trying to get some chocolate ice cream on my pancake.
โYes it isโ, the entire Syverson says at the same time.
I cringe. Gosh, is my accent that bad?
โWell for your information; my accent is a culmination of places that Iโve lived inโ, I tell them enjoying my food. Itโs been a while since Iโve had some good pancakes.
I look up to see Syโs eyebrows raised; a look of curiosity spreading across his face as he stuffs his mouth with waffles.
โWell donโt leave us in suspense, dear girlโ, Jeb encourages me along.
โCan you guys guess?โ, I grin, wanting to see if anyone can get it right
โOh hell naw, sweet pea! Just tell us, I know for a fact Iโm gonโ get this dead wrongโ, Sy mumbles over this food.
โOh cโmon, Captain! Thought youโd be up for a challengeโ, I tease him trying to goad him but he isnโt falling for it.
โI ainโt got the patience; itโs been bugginโ me since I met yaโ he confesses.
Iโm puzzled. Does that mean heโs been thinking about me?
โBorn in the Philippines, raised in New Zealand, lived in Canada for the shortest time, and lo and behold, this is the end productโ, I tell them.
Thereโs a simultaneous โwow, and oooโ from the Syversons. Iโm guessing they donโt know what to make of that or maybe theyโre impressed? Who knows.
โAnd what got ya over here?โ Jeb asks.
โHmmm Iโd been living in Australia for a while, wanted a break, a change of sceneryโ, I tell them most of the truth, I mean Iโm not lying I am here for a break but what kind of break they donโt need to know.
I look over to Sy beside me. Heโs nodding acknowledging what Iโve said but not saying anything. His expression is contemplative.
We stay longer chatting more, all of us making our way through our meals.
Iโm finishing up my pancakes when Sy starts laughing at me.
โWhat? Why you cackling like a hyena for?โ I ask him, confused as to how Iโve managed to garner this kind of reaction out of him.
โYouโre a mess, canโt take ya anywhereโ, he grins as he swipes his thumb on the corners of my mouth, wiping off chocolate ice cream, he sticks his thumb in his mouth licking it off, I canโt help but stare. โHere, I canโt get all of itโ, he puts his thumb under my chin and turns my head towards him, a napkin in his hand as he cleans me up, a big smile on his face.
โThanks Jax, always such a gentleman,โ I grin back at him
โMy pleasure, bub. And only for youโ, he winks at me as he keeps his thumb under my chin for a second longer. I look into his eyes, and I swear it looks like he wants to kiss me. He licks his lips, his eyes flicking between mine and my lips, and he slowly starts leaning towards me..
Until thereโs a loud crash from the kitchen as we hear something break, ruining the moment.
I jump at the loud noise, Sy clears his throat, and letโs go of my chin.
โAlright, letโs get movinโโ
I look up to see Edith and Jeb watching us with the biggest smiles Iโve ever seen on their faces.
Sy POV
I take my grandparents home first, todayโs activities zappinโ them of their energy. They wanted to rest before they took me to base.
Everly didnโt wanna wait in the truck; helping gran out and into the house. She also wanted to see Turbo.
โEvie honey, why donโt ya come stay and see Jax off? Jeb and I can take ya home afterโ Gran suggests
โOh the drive will be far too long for you guys and itโll be late into the evening. Plus Jaxโs flight is pretty late. I have a 7am start tomorrowโ Everlyโs biting her lip, a frown on her face.
I ainโt gonna lie Iโm bummed but she had a point. My grandparents are getting quite old and I donโt want them driving out that late and that far. I also donโt want Everly to have to Uber home. Plus sheโs exhausted and needs rest herself especially if she has an early start tomorrow.
โAlright I better be takinโ Everly home nowโ, I say.
โOkay sweet girl, donโt be a strangerโ gran gives her a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
Poppa gives her a big olโ bear hug making Everly laugh, โyou come on back and we get ya better at drivinโ a stick shift, huh?โ
โItโs a dateโ she winks at Poppa making him smile big, โAlright you two, take care, and see you soonโ she smiles and makes her way to me.
I offer her my arm and she grabs it with her small hand.
We walk on over to the truck to the passenger side first, I open the door and help her get in. Her tiny 5ft self would need to leap in otherwise. Itโs a miracle she managed to drive this massive thing here.
I go on round to my side, and jump in. Put my seat belt on and start the engine. The truck roaring to life, and I start reversing outta the long driveway.
Weโre on the road to her place now, I got her to put her address in the GPS. An hour drive or so.
Iโve got my left hand on the steering wheel, my right on the gear stick as I glance over at Everly.
Sheโs looking out the window, even looking more tired but thereโs a smile on her face and sheโs resting her hands on her lap.
โMy grandparents adore ya, ya know?โ I tell her
She looks on over to me her eyes bright, โI like them too, very muchโ
We talk here and there during the drive but it ainโt forced small talk, and when we ainโt talking weโre quiet but it ainโt bad. I donโt gotta put music on to fill an awkward silence โcause there ainโt none.
Sometime during the drive I didn't even realize, but I reached over to Everly and grabbed her hand. Holding it mine; enjoying the weight and feel of it. It felt right. I hadnโt realized till we made it to hers on the other side of town that sheโs fast asleep. I donโt know why the image of her with her head to the side sleeping makes me warm inside.
I kill the engine, pick her hand up from my thigh, givin it a quick kiss before I gently place it on her lap, and get outta the truck. I go to the back and grab her bag with her books from the library and then I go over on her side.
I unbuckle her seat belt and pick her up as gently and quietly as I can, not wanting to wake her. I snicker and shake my head in disbelief, sheโs light as fuck; sweet baby Jesus I bench heavier weights than her. I slowly close the door and lock the truck. Trying to be careful and not jostle her around too much.
I start going around the truck when I see someone come out the front door and I canโt believe who it is.
Itโs August Walker. CIA agent. Iโve worked with him a few times being a special forces captain on select missions. Small dang world or what?
โWell Iโll be damned, Walkerโ I say to him
โWhat do you think youโre doing here, Captain Syverson?โ he says right on back.
We both break out in grins, the fake bravado falling away.
He gives me a slap on the back.
โClearly you know Everlyโ he motions with his head to her in my arms. Sheโs got her head curled up against my chest.
โYes I do..she lives here..?โ I ask, confused.
Walker laughs, โShe does at the back in the renovated pool house. Sheโs my fiancรฉโs, Aliciaโs, good friend. Iโll take you throughโ
I follow him through his extravagant house, big and luxurious.
We get to the pool house, and itโs a decent size.
โ..key?โ I ask him.
He comes around to my other side where Everlyโs bag hangs. Thereโs a front pocket where her key is, but it ainโt no traditional key. Itโs some fancy keycard that Walker waves over some high tech lookinโ shit. We hear the lock slide open and he puts the keycard back in her bag.
โGood to see you againโ he says
โYou too, manโ
โNow you look after herโ
โI sure willโ, I tell him. He smiles and turns around, walking past the pool, and back into the main house.
I go in, closing the door with my boot, and walk on through to the lounge, and take her to the L shaped couch nearby. I lay her down on the chaise just long enough to put her bag down when she reaches for me, pulling me down, and snuggles against me. A small sigh escapin her lips. Iโm taken aback; not expecting this. I really should go. I need to finish packing my shit, but I donโt wanna.
โฆFuck it; I ainโt goinโ until I really have to.
I carefully take my phone outta my front pocket, set an alarm, and put it back.
I look down at her, sheโs snuggled right against me; her breathing deep and even. I carefully take her glasses off, and put them on the coffee table. I tuck her back against me, her small frame fitting perfectly against mine. I sweep her baby hairs off her forehead and press my lips against it, smiling to myself.
I lay my head on top of hers, falling asleep myself.
I watch the white SUV disappear, and make my way back. Fuck, with everythinโ that ended up goinโ down I forgot to ask for Everlyโs number again. I sigh, frustrated. Well canโt do anythinโ about it now, though I know itโs gonโ bug me for the rest of the night. I donโt know when Iโll see her next. If Iโll ever see her again; you never know when itโs gonโ be your last mission in the military.
I get back in the club when Pepps, drunk as skunk, corners me.
โDayumm! You struck out too huh!? I thought you was the lucky one โcause I saw yโall walk out together, but muthafucka you back! She didnโt want yoโ grumpy ass in the end!โ Heโs loud as fuck and slurrinโ all his goddamn words. Iโm surprised heโs still vertical.
โAh, shut your pie hole. Her girlโs and her had to go hospital. One of them has alcohol poisoninโ, and if you keep carryinโ on the way ya are youโre gonna be joininโ themโ, I snap at him.
At this point Pepps is too far gone, I doubt he heard any of that. He just laughs and gets distracted by some girls passinโ us, โEyyyy sweet thang, whatโs yoโ name!?โ And heโs off creepinโ as usual.
I go to the bar to order another glass of whiskey when BJ comes up to me.
โHey, that was the chick Pepps blew it with, didnโt know she was your type Capโ, BJโs grinninโ like a goddamn idiot.
โIโd met her before, Everlyโs the one who took my grandparents home from the dentistโ, I tell โim as I pay for my drink.
โOh for real? Well dang, she cute; pretty name too. She ainโt look nothinโ like dem ladies you normally go home withโ
I grunt in response, takinโ a swig of my drink. Heโs right. I usually go home with girls like that blonde from earlier tonight. Tall, light hair, light eyes, and voluptuous. But I donโt know, thereโs somethinโ about Everly.
I try enjoy the rest of the night, a few ladies even wantinโ me to go home with them but for once I just wasnโt feelinโ it, my heart ainโt in it tonight nor my dick.
After a while I give up especially when the buzz of the alcohol dies. None of the boys wanna call it a night, sayinโ theyโll just get an Uber so I head back home by myself. So many thoughts runninโ through my head as I drive back in the truck. My phone vibrates and a name that Iโve seen pop-up plenty of times appears, but like Iโve said I ainโt in the mood tonight especially not for her so I ignore the call. I get inside, and try be quiet as my grandparents are sleepinโ. I brush my teeth real quick, and pass out on my bed. Visions of black gray hair and warm chocolate eyes are the last thing I remember.
Sy POV
Itโs Saturday. I ainโt feelinโ bad; I didnโt drink much, and Iโm used to havinโ little to no sleep.
We get outta church after attendinโ the 9am mass. My grandparents usually go on a Sunday but Grand Momma wanted us to go together before Iโm deployed tonight. We continue on with their routine by headinโ to the library. I try find a spot close to the entrance so my grandparents donโt gotta walk far; couldnโt find shit so we had a bit of a way to walk. I grab the pile of books from the back as Poppa helps gran outta the truck.
Iโm carryinโ the books walkinโ ahead as I see none other than the person who occupied my thoughts and seeped into dreams last night.
Well Iโll be damned; sheโs on her way to the library as well.
Sheโs wearinโ a long pale pink summer dress with a high collar beige cardigan with nude ballet flats, her hair in a messy bun.
โEverly!โ I holler. I mustโve scared her โcause she looks like she about to drop her books. She turns around, her glasses slidinโ down her nose.
โJax!โ She looks surprised to see me.
I catch up to her. This is the first time sheโs been beside me in somethinโ other than heels, and godfreakinโdamn she is tiny. She just comes up to my shoulderโฆ just.
โhey darlinโ, how ya doin?โ, I greet her with a big smile.
โGood morning, Syโ, she looks up at me, hoisting the books up as she pushes her glasses back up her nose.
I look down at her grinning; happy to see her right before I leave. But then I notice her eyes, thereโs prominent dark circles under them. Ones that werenโt there the last two times I saw her. Worry creeping into my stomach. Sheโs smilinโ back at me, despite how tired her eyes are. Tired she might be, sheโs looking as pretty as she did last night. Not a lick of makeup on but sometimes makeup is just the cherry on top. Sheโs the whole goddamn cupcake.
โHey, you alright? Have you rested at all after last night? Cโmon, gimme those books Iโll carry them for yaโ I grab the books off her, adding them to the pile Iโm already carrying; not giving her a chance to say no.
โYeah Iโm okay, thanks for asking. And thanks for carrying my books. Iโve slept a little, maybe three and a half hours or so..?โ
I frown a bit, โThat ainโt enough, bubโ, the term of endearment just slipping out, โhow long were you in the hospital for? Is your friend okay?โ
โShit, I didnโt take noteโ, she doesnโt seem to mind me calling her that. Sheโs biting her lower lip trying remember for how long. I donโt even notice my eyes are glued to them until she starts talking again, โA while to be honest. Yeah sheโs alright.. this isnโt the first time itโs happened. What about you? Did you stay at the club for much longer?โ
โOh, that explains your other friendโs reaction. Naw, it got pretty borinโ after ya left. I went home not long afterโ, she smiles at that but before she can answer my grandparents finally make it to us.
โOh, Ms. Everly! What a nice surprise bumpinโ into you like thisโ, my gran says. My Poppa beside her smiling.
โGood morning Mr. and Mrs. Syversonโ, my gran goes and gives her a hug, my Poppa does too.
โNow young lady, you donโt gotta be callinโ us somethinโ so formalโ he tells her as he pats her hand, โEdith and Jeb is just fineโ
โThen you both can stop calling me Ms. Everly!โ She counters back, we all laugh at that, โEverly or Evie is fineโ she winks at them.
โOh youโre a funny oneโ Poppa says chuckling, โcโmon missy, letโs go find us some books. And tell me, watcha been readingโ he gently grabs her hand and places it on his arm, linking them together. I smile. I ainโt ever seen my Poppa this warm to someone outside the family.
Gran and I let them walk in front, gran grabbing my arm to link hers through mine.
โYou know, Jax. Little Evie here reminds me a lot of your beautiful mamaโ my gran starts.
I swallow before I look at her, โOh, really?โ I answer back quietly. We donโt really mention my parents that much.
โOh yeah. A sweet, kind, caring thing just like her. Both have a wittiness about them, but Evie just a touch more. Both firecrackersโ gran smiles at that; remembering her fondly, โthatโs why your daddy fell right in love with her, same with your Poppa and I. When your daddy brought Esme home for us to meet for the first time, woo. Good lord we ainโt ever had such a good time. We could see that Esme adored Jacob to bits. We were absolutely smitten with her.โ I smile at that myself, a warmth spreading through my chest.
โWhen Evie came back the next day to check on your grandfather, I didnโt tell ya, but she stayed a whileโ gran confesses
โShe did..?โ
โShe sure did. Turbo met her and instantly fell in love with her. That dog wouldnโt leave her alone, poor girl, he was always jumping on her. And your granddaddy absolutely loved her company. They went out for a long walk with Turbo together. Just chattinโ. Surprised the good heavens outta me, I havenโt seen your granddaddy that fond of someone since your mama. He even offered to teach her how to drive a stick betterโ gran laughed at that. Her and Poppa talking about Everly or being around her makes them light up. I couldnโt figure out why until now.
โWhy didnโt yโall tell me this earlier?โ I ask.
Gran shrugs, โI donโt know to be honest with ya, honey. I guess we were both a bit shocked to meet someone who reminded us so much of your motherโ, weโre walking slowly immersed in our conversation, โitโd been a while since we saw Evie, it felt like a dream ya know? But then seeing her at the clinic and her being there with us that entire time, looking after me, even assisting for me even though she was meant to be having her lunch, solidified that it was real.โ
Iโm thinking deep now โcause it ainโt only gran and Poppa getting fond of this girl, and itโs been a long time since Iโve felt somethinโ even remotely close to this..
Awwww โค๏ธ I love his relationship with grandparents. I can feel the southern warmth coming through the words like a blanket wrapping around me and making me a bit homesick for my own grandparents. Wonder if heโll actually get her number this time lol

Big thanks to @firefly-graphics for the stunning dividers!
It felt good, it felt so fucking good to be free. To not have to worry about anyone else other than myself. To have no other responsibilities or obligations other than TO myself.
I havenโt been this free for a longggg time.
It felt strange. Foreign. Unknown. Good, but also scary.
Iโve just worked a 12-hour shift, but instead of doing what I used to do, I'm out with my girlโs living it up.
7am-7pm: Work with only a half an hour break. I should be exhausted, and I am. But thatโs what energy drinks are for.
I go home, get ready, late as dinner, and then out into the clubs. Everyoneโs already a little buzzed having had two or three drinks at the restaurant. Vodka Redbull my poison of choice. Who said energy drinks couldnโt be more fun?
I can hear Leaโs voice in my head: โHave fun but take care and be careful, sis!โ
She didnโt come with. She went home to be with her man, Eric, and her adorable son, Isaac. Sheโs like the mother hen of the group. I guess her partying days are behind her. Iโm late to mine.
It must be our lucky night because we barely had to wait in the queue for long; weโre ushered into the club by the bouncers. Second club of the night and weโre hoping this one was a good one. We werenโt vibing with the music of the other place. .
The place is packed. The music booming hard through the speakers. Everyone seems to be having a good time.
Shayla has sashayed her fine self straight to the dance floor dragging me along with her; Lydia straight to the bar. Casey right behind us pushing Lauren ahead.
โYouโre gonna have a damn good time and forget about work for once in your life!โ I hear Casey yell.
Lauren had a tough day with difficult procedures and challenging patients. I wouldnโt know the extent.. I was too bloody busy running between general, orthodontics, and periodontics. Iโm scared to see how many steps Iโve taken today, and the nightโs not even over yet.
I feel Shayla dance closer to me smiling like thereโs a little devil on her shoulder.
โSo is tonight the night? You finally gonโ take someone home?โ, She winks at me trying to be slick.
Every time weโre out she tries to set me up with every Tom, Dick, and Harry that she can get her hands on.
I laugh and roll my eyes at her. Iโm gonna gap before she can sucker me into anything. I point to the bar letting them know I want a drink, and to also find Lydia.
I push myself through all the bodies shouting a never ending chorus of โexcuse me, pardon meโ trying hard to get through all these gigantors when I finally make it to one of the ends of the really long bar.
โHeyyy, little one!โ Lydia slurs, and grabs me for a hug. Sheโs had a few.
The rest of the girls follow behind me and we all order two rounds of wet pussy shots; we down them quickly when we hear someone come and approach us.
โWassup ladiesโ, his voice is cocksure and stupid loud.
He comes on right over to me, and puts his arm around me.
โYo, shorty. What they call ya, huh?โ, the arrogance of this boy is just oozing out of him.
I grab his arm, shaking my head, dropping it fast beside him.
โFirst of all I ainโt your โshortyโ, bro. Second of all, donโt be putting your hands on meโ
โOoo sorry, mah bayd. Lemme buy ya a drink to apologize'', he winks thinking heโs real cute.
โHow โbout if you guess my age right you can have my number otherwise you can piss right offโ, I grin big; knowing he wonโt be able to succeed. No one has been able to get this shit right. This is the surefire way to get rid of him.
โDamnnnn girl, you feisty lil thang!โ
I roll my eyes at him, just waiting for him to answer.
The sudden confidence is gone but he answers nonetheless
โ21โ
The girlโs and I laugh.
โLater, bo!โ, we wave his ass goodbye. This always gets rid of unwanted attention quick.
Next thing you know our jam comes on. The timing couldnโt have been any more perfect. Shayla starts hollering, and I canโt help but join in too.
Itโs time to get our asses back on the dance floor. And thatโs exactly what we do.
Weโre all pushed up together, rapping along with the song, dancing, having a damn good time.
Our fave part comes on and I canโt help but slide on over to Lauren, putting her hands on my hips as I back it up on her. I can hear her laugh and sway along with me, cracking up even louder as I drop it wayyy down, and start twerking on her. The other girls are laughing, egging us on as she gets into it. I get back up laughing and turn around to give Lauren a hug.
โAnd there you have the Evie special; just for you tonightโ, I shout over the music into her ear.
โAwww, you lil shit. You always know how to cheer me upโ. She hugs me back tight, a grin on her face as we pull away.
We dance a bit longer when I suddenly donโt feel too good. The sleep deprivation is finally catching up with me. The air is thick and heavy, and with barely any water in me and all this alcohol I need fresh air.
I tell Lauren Iโm gonna step out for a bit and I push through the bodies to make my way through the back. Opening the door as I make my way outside and step into the cold night air.
The fresh air was just what I was after; it was getting hot in there, and I needed a breather. I focus on the air filling my lungs when I let out a small breath. I hear the door slam shut loudly, but I pay it no mind.
โLooks like ya need thisโ, I hear a familiar voice over the music and bass from inside the club.
I crack an eye open and look to my right. Surprised to see who it is.
โโฆJax?โ A small smile tugs on my lips.
Heโs standing there in a black skin tight v-neck shirt his dog tags peeking under, black jeans that fit him in all the right places, brown leather belt, and black leather boots. This man loves the colour black. I catch myself staring at him longer than I should. He not only looks good in uniform but also out of it, too.
โYes, maโam. But didnโt I tell ya to call me Sy?โ He grins as he holds out a bottle of cold water to me.
โSorry, Captainโ, I smirk as I take the water from him, our fingers touching briefly.
I open it and scull it; not realising how thirsty I am. I can feel his eyes on me as I wipe away a bit of water that escapes and drips down from the corner of my lips.
โThanks for thisโ I say holding up the water.
I see his eyes flicker from the water bottle to my mouth. He quickly clears his throat.
โPleasureโs mine.. mind if I come join ya?โ He asks me, an inquisitive look on his face.
โNot at allโ I smile at him and motion to the wall beside me.
He sauntered over to me, leaning against the wall before crossing his arms, the action highlighting how big his biceps are.
โLooks like you were havinโ a grand olโ time in thereโ he says with a smirk.
I look up at him, eyebrow raised โoh, really now? What makes you say that, huh?โ Iโm curious now.
He laughs, โthose dance moves looked interestinโโ his eyes mischievous.
โOh, donโt be telling your grandparents that!โ My eyes wide.
โWhy not?โ, Mofo has a shit eating grin on his face.
โBecause I have a reputation to upholdโ
โOh, do ya now?โ Heโs teasing me now; a glint in his eye.
โI sure do. Waitโฆ you were watching me, eh? Now tell me Captain, for how long?โ
โFrom the moment one of my boys got shut downโ he threw his head back laughing, his whole body shaking, his eyes crinkled in the corners.
โFrom then, eh? You know that cocky son of a bitch!?โ Iโm laughing too, surprised.
โYes, maโam. Heโs one of the younger ones in my squad. A frickinโ tactical genius which is probably why heโs so goddamn cockyโ
โThat makes senseโ, I nod, โhold upโฆwhat are you doing here? This doesnโt look like a place youโd hang out inโ
โThe boys from the squad and I are havinโ our last hurrah before weโre deployed again, we somehow ended up hereโ Sy forces a small smile but itโs tight and doesnโt reach his eyes .
The atmosphere shifts; no longer light and playful.
โOh.. when do you leave?โ, I ask him softly.
โTomorrow nightโ, Sy turns away from me, he looks straight ahead of him, staring at the road in front of us, his eyes pensive.
โFor how long?โ
โAt the moment six months, but ya never know. Could be extendedโ, heโs still looking ahead; nodding slightly.
โBetter make the most of your night then, eh? Donโt waste what little time you have left with me! Go back in there and have some funโ, Iโm smiling as I motion my head towards the club and nudge him with my shoulder trying to lighten the mood, โgo get fucked up with your boys and get some sugarโ I wink at him grinning.
He laughs, โNaw someoneโs gotta look out for these imbeciles plus who said I ainโt havinโ fun out here with youโ, he nudges me back with his shoulder, smiling.
โOh yeah, discussing my dodgy dance moves eh?โ
โโUte, dodgy, ehโ what in tarnations is this kind of vocabulary?โ Sy smirks at me โoh, good lord you ainโt no British Canadian are ya!?โ
I laugh, โno but who the hell says โtarnationsโ in this day and age, huh?โ I tease him right back โMr. Syverson isnโt really your granddad, eh? Heโs your brother isnโt he, you old fart?โ
โNow who in the hell are you callinโ an old fart, huh? Just โcause you be one of dem young folk in their 20โs, goddamn smartass delinquent with that blasphemous dancinโโ, heโs laying the southern accent on thick now, taking the piss which just makes me laugh especially as he frowns looking just like his grandfather.
โHey Iโm young but I ainโt that young, old manโ
โDo I get the same deal as Pepps? If I guess right, youโll gimme your number?โ He asks me, wiggling his eyebrows, making me laugh more.
โI donโt knowโ, I shrug, โyouโre probably too old for me, sirโ
โOh cโmon now, I ainโt that oldโ heโs smiling big, his eyes shining as he grins at me.
He looks different when heโs smiling and laughing like this; younger, happier. I canโt help but smile and laugh back. His good mood is infectious.
I canโt be thinking like this though. Canโt be getting attracted to someone; someone like him. This definitely isnโt what Iโm here for. I didn't move all this way for this.
Before I can respond and tell him the truth the door opens and one of my girlโs comes over. Itโs Shayla with a worried look etched on her beautiful ebony face
โThere you are, LO. Iโve been looking all over for you. We gotta get goin, baby girl. Lydiaโs been puking non-stop. We think itโs alcohol poisoning. AGAINโ, she shakes her head, rolling her eyes. This is why the girls werenโt big fans of her.
โFuck, I hope sheโs okay. Sorry, Sy. I better get goingโ I push myself off the wall. I turn to Sy looking him in the eyes. He looks worried himself now, too.
โNo need to apologize, darlinโโ his eyebrows are furrowed, โyโall need help? I can take yโall over to the hospitalโ
โNaw, Lydiaโs mom is here. Weโre about to head on over there but thanksโ Shayla says.
โAlright, well Iโll walk yโall ladies to the carโ, Sy says as he follows beside me, his large hand on the small of my back.
We make our way through the club as quickly as we can despite the difficulty with how busy it is. Sy doesnโt leave my side the entire time, pushing through the crowds for me with his gigantic frame, keeping me safe from being trampled on, tucking me securely against his side.
We make it outside; the crisp cool air waking us up. Casey is standing there waiting for us to take us to the car. A grimace on her face.
We walk just a little up the street when I see Lydiaโs mumโs large seven seater Audi Q7. Lydiaโs not looking great sitting in the passenger seat, resting her head against the glass window, holding a bag to her face.
The girls start piling in, and I turn to my side to say bye to Sy.
โThanks for offering to take us to the hospital; thatโs real kind of you,โ I look up at him with a small smile, craning my neck up even with heeled boots on, โthanks for the water againโ itโs windy and my hair flies into my face, getting stuck on my lips, stupid lip gloss.
Sy helps me push my hair out of my face as he pulls me in for a hug.
โItโs no problem at all. Iโm sorry about your friend; I had a good time chattinโ witโ ya though,โ his voice is muffled by my hair as he whispers in my ear.
โI did, tooโ, Iโm surprised but I hug him back. Iโm almost balancing on the tips of my boots, heโs hunched over engulfing me in a warm, tight, hug with his massive body.
Iโm about to let go but he holds on a little longer, his face buried in my hair.
Lydiaโs mum gets impatient and puts the window down, โEvie sweetie, we gotta get goinโ she says, her voice urgent.
As Sy and I separate he tucks my hair behind my ear. Itโs like heโs taking every chance he can get to touch me and draw out this goodbye as long as possible.
โAlright you take care now, Everly. I hope your friend will be alrightโ his smile is tight.
I give him a quick smile as I clamber into the SUV, and thank him for the hundredth time as Lydiaโs mum drives away. I watch him become a tiny speck on the sidewalk as we make our way to the hospital.
Iโd been home for a bit; relieved to finally have some type of rest. Happy to be with my grandparents again, the joy of cookinโ for them somethinโ I absolutely love to do. I head into town needinโ to grab a few things. I park my truck at the grocery store countinโ things off my head in terms of what I need to get for dinner. I kill the engine about to hop on out when I see a certain someone leavinโ the store.
I see Everly in navy blue scrubs, a black long sleeve top, her long black gray hair tied up in a messy bun. Sheโs carryinโ a bunch of groceries walkinโ alongside Georgia Anderson who is hobblinโ along in a cast and crutches. Iโd heard from gran that Georgia broke her leg after fallinโ down the stairs. I overhear them as they stop by a car near me. Everly loading her groceries for her.
โOh thank you so much, sweet girl. Youโre such an angel helping me out,โ Georgia smiles at Everly, โnow let me thank you by dropping you off home, sweetie. Itโs the least I can doโ
โYouโre welcome. And itโs okay. You donโt have toโ Everly smiles back, politely declining her offer.
โOh, it ainโt no trouble at all. Plus you donโt live that far from me.โ Georgia insists. Not takinโ no for an answer.
โAre you sure?โ
โNo doubt, missy. Now cโmon and jump inโ, Georgia waves her in. Everly helps her into the car first; takinโ her crutches and poppinโ them at the back before climbinโ in the front.
They drive away talkinโ and laughinโ. I canโt help but smile to myself. Seems like Everly is the townโs guardian angel.
Sy POV
How the fuck did I end up in an R&B/hip hop club late on a Friday? Who the fuck knows?
One minute the men and I are bar hoppinโ from one dive to another, and the next thing I know Iโm in this godforsaken place.
Everyoneโs pretty hammered, I ainโt feelinโ too bad. Someoneโs gotta keep an eye out for these numbnuts, and I guess โcause Iโm their captain that goddamn responsibility automatically ended up fallinโ on me.
This ainโt my usual scene and I ainโt really feelinโ it, but with glasses of whiskey to stomach this place who am I to say no?
The boys have let loose, shit talkinโ, and tryna get laid before we get deployed again, Iโm just here for the ride.
The place is packed, the lights low, the bar a shininโ neon beacon for anyone and everyone that wants to get fucked up.
The music is loud, bass reverberating through the building as thereโs people all over the place; some dancinโ on the dance floor, grindinโ on each other. Some around the bar takinโ shots and drinkinโ their night away. Some just chillinโ with their friends on some leather seats spread around the joint.
The boys make a beeline for the bar, and I ainโt too far behind them.
Weโre pushinโ our way through the sweaty bodies when we finally make it.
A round of tequila shots get ordered, and I get myself a Jack on the rocks.
The boys are loud, obnoxiously so but what else would you get with a bunch of single men in their 20โs and 30โs tryna blow off some steam? Iโm feelinโ my age nearinโ 40. Iโm gettinโ too old for this shit.
Iโm pulled outta my thoughts when I hear Pepps.
โGodfuckingdamn, who are those fine as ladies!?โ He hollers loud as fuck, a hand on his chest, the other against his mouth.
I roll my eyes. Theyโve started huntinโ.
I pay no mind just sippinโ on my whiskey when someone approaches me.
โHey, youโ they whisper into my ear.
I turn to see a hot blonde on my right. Sheโs tall, nearly my height with heels on. Sheโs got green eyes and her lips are painted red which matches her short, tight, red dress.
Iโm about to say somethinโ when I see Pepps in the corner of my eye approach a group of ladies, Iโm guessinโ the one he was losinโ his mind over just a second ago.
Somethinโ makes me stop and look; squinting tryna get a better look.
One of them ladies look familiar, sheโs got long gray hair when it clicks..
โSorry maโam, if youโll excuse meโ, I tell the blonde.
She doesnโt look too impressed, her sultry look quickly turning into a scowl, no longer lookinโ as hot as she did.
โWhateverโ she rolls her eyes at me, stompinโ away in them heels.
I ainโt bothered. My curiosity has gotten the better of me.
I make my way to the boys and theyโre all laughinโ
โWhatโs that fool doinโ now?โ I ask BJ as I take a sip of my drink.
โThat muthafucka thinks he has a shot with that girl with the long black gray hairโ BJ splutters out, nearly chokinโ on his beer.
I look over and my instinct was rightโฆ itโs Everly.
I watch Pepps walk on right over with the swagger of a hundred rappers.
A sly look in his eye and a cocky smirk on his face. I gotta give the kid somethinโ, heโs got balls especially puttinโ his arm around her. She grabs his arm, and drops it by his side shakinโ her head. The boys start crackinโ up.
That doesnโt deter Pepps though. Heโs talkinโ tryna get an in.
Suddenly Everly smiles, big and bright, and says somethinโ. Pepps suddenly not lookinโ as confident. He takes a minute to think before he finally decides to answer. It mustโve been wrong โcause the all girlโs laugh and wave him goodbye.
He comes on back over lookinโ confused.
โShe donโt want ya, huh?โ I say grinninโ.
โShe said sheโd gimme her number if I guessed her age rightโ he says.
We laugh. Fool. Good luck guessinโ an Asians correct age. Male or female. No one can tell.
โWhatโd you guess?โ I ask curious.
โ21โ he says with no hesitation.
โNah man, I bet you sheโs nearly 40โ BJ chimes in.
โNo fucking way, I bet you late 20โs like 28โ, Pat offers up.
They all take turns guessinโ. I ainโt even gonna try.
The song changes and I see Everly and her girlโs make their way to the dance floor, clearly a fan of this song. The boys still debating amongst themselves.
โMy bitch love Coco! Woo back, baby!โ It comes loud through the speakers.
I ainโt seen her since she was at the store in her scrubs two nearly three weeks ago, and by god does she look different outta them.
Sheโs on the dance floor laughin, rappinโ along with the song, her girlโs and her clearly havinโ a good time.
Theyโre all dancinโ together, close as fuck. When I see her slide on over in front of one of her friends, grab their hands placinโ them on her hips as she starts backinโ it up, grindinโ against her.
The boys mustโve noticed how quiet Iโd been โcause they look on over to see her drop it down, shakinโ her ass in time to the lyrics.
โAnd I got a bad bitch, ass up
Face down (Face down), yeah, she love doggy style (Uh-huh)โ
She starts mock twerkinโ and jumps up laughing, all the girls do too as she grabs her friend behind her, giving her a hug.
They continue dancing together, and the boys and I look at each other. Eyes wide.
โHot damn..โ Pepps mutters.
โDude, you never had a chance with herโ, BJ wheezes out, he canโt stop laughinโ over Pepps confidence.
I laugh and shake my head, draining the rest of my drink.
Well, this is certainly a different Everly to the one Iโd met at the clinic.
She dances for a bit longer and then goes and whispers something in her friendโs ear, and starts making her way to one of the doors at the back.
The boys have moved onto Jรคgerbombs as I go and buy a bottle of water, and start to make my way towards Everlyโs direction.
Pepps already scopinโ the place out for his next victim.
I make it outside, the door closing with a loud clang when I see her to my left. Sheโs leaning against the brick wall, legs semi bent, head turned up towards the night sky with her eyes closed.
I donโt head over straight away; Iโm too busy admirinโ her.
Sheโs got a full face of makeup on nothing too much, but enough to enhance her looks.
Her long hair is out, sheโs wearing a snug ribbed long sleeved dress accentuating her figure with tight suede thigh high boots. Fuck, she looks good, too fuckinโ good.
The thumping of the bass from inside makes the wall shake as she lets out a small breath.
Friendly reminder that the reason you feel so much better is because of your meds, donโt stop taking them unless you talk to your doctor first, you really do need them, I promise.ย
Around June I stopped taking my eye medication because I hadnโt had a problem with my eyes in months. I got really lazy about doing it; then I stopped them altogether.
Turns out, the reason I stopped having problems with my eyes was because I was religiously taking my medication. Whodathunk. Now I have to work to get back to the place I was before I decided I wasย โbetterโ (I wasnโt!).
If you thought this post was just about anti-depressants or lithium, it could be! For me, this post is about eyedrops, for you it might be about antibiotics, or it might be about zoloft. Whatever it is, please consider talking to your doctor before making a sudden shift to stop taking it. Itโs not bad to be on medication. Itโs not bad to need it.ย
โฆand on a related note, do not let anyone tell you that because you start feeling worse if you donโt take your medication, that means youโreย โaddictedโ. That is not how addiction works.

hold on a fucking second. delaware is a state?? i thought it was a river? or is the river more important than the state? why don't i know this? (i should mention i don't like in america, i'm just confused)
there is delaware (state) and delaware (river)ย
both are equally strange
the state is a tiny little cryptid thing
the rive is a monster that spans new york, pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. also washington crossed it once and that was like kinda a big deal i guess. like crossing the rubicon in rome.
the state tries to me more important with itsย โim the first state!!!โ bs (seriously its even on the fucking license plates) but we all know. its the river.
I know home depot, but dude I don't know anything about America mad have never been there. Are you sure there is not a some sort of store called something close to Delaware!?!
Pausing here to point out that op isย โdear-AO3โณ and now Iโm wondering if Delaware fanfic would be categorized as RSF (real state fic) or AU (alternate unitedstates)
