MinceMarchingBand HC 15: One Time During Band Camp (BEES)
Background: The slope of the practice field means it is some sort of soggy about 70% of the time. Unfortunately with soggy comes mud, and with mud comes Mud Wasps, and man are those little fuckers VIOLENT.
The guard was practicing a partner work section when Bella felt something touching on the back of her neck. She thought it was sweat or her hair had come loose and went to brush it away.
It, as it turns out, was a wasp, and it chose violence (stung).
In her panic to get the “OH FUCK OW!” off, the stinger broke off in the back of her hand.
Unfortunately for Bella, she was meant to run equipment onto the field to her exchange partner (Monty) during this chunk, and not wanting to leave him without for the hold, took the flags and ran on at her entrance anyway, spinning through the pain and sobbing the entire time.
Monty was, understandably, concerned, and as soon as the instructor called “cut”, immediately went into Captain Mode.
Once he got the story out of poor Bella (and saw the state of her hand) he grabbed her (carefully) by the wrist to keep the injury elevated and dragged her off the field, gently chastising (in the way people do when you don’t take care of yourself and they’re worried) her for deciding to continue doing the work.
(“Why would you do that? This is band camp, not the bloody Olympics! Wait no, please stop crying- I don’t- oh my god it’s stuck in your hand-” *repressed dry heaving*)
Bevan attempted to stop them, asking where they thought they were going, to which Monty replied:
“One of my Girls is hurt, Johnny, and I can’t do sod all about it so I’m getting someone who can! Have a little humanity!”
(Monty has a tendency to refer to any of the color guard as “his girls” (to mixed reactions). This also includes Spilsbury, Hester, and occasionally Charlie.)
Bevan, flustered upon noticing Monty had not abandoned the field for a lark, called a five minute break.
Satisfied, Monty dragged the still crying Bella with him to the other side of the field (where Italia and Prezzo were partnered) to ask the latter if she carried tweezers to remove the stinger (she’s got everything else).
Prezzo did not, but directed them to the pit (“Maybe they have tweezers? They have a lot of things to tune and fix their equipment.”) offering to run and grab an ice pack.
(Prezzo started carrying tweezers in her first aid kit after that. It came in handy when Masterman tried to show off how strong he was and wound up with pieces of drumstick in his hand. Ditto for Fleming after testing one of Reggie’s props.)
They were waylaid by Tub and Reggie.
Tub, in his infinite wisdom, noticed that Bella was crying and asked (in a condescending tone):
“Oh no, what happened? Did you drop?”
When Bella responded NO she was stung by a wasp (but perhaps not with that language), Reggie decided this was the time to argue that it must have been a bee because wasp stings don’t come off, etc.
(Very helpful, thanks Reggie)
They made it to the pit where Jean was running a well-oiled (exactly!) machine.
Jean took one look and while she didn’t have tweezers, she DID have long nails and pulled the stinger out of Bella’s arm herself.
(Bella was instantly besotted)
Monty was feeling a bit like a third wheel when Prezzo arrived with Italia and an ice pack (José in tow - he had baked cookies), Charles came sprinting from across the field with an epi-pen, yelling the whole way about BEES.
(“Very good, Charlie, but we don’t need that.”
“-you have to call 911 Before-! Wait, what?”
“She’s not allergic, it’s ok.”
“Are you sure?! Sometimes reactions can take up to 24 hours-“
“Shhh, not so loud, Charles, do you want Spilsbury to overhear?”
“Oh I know he’d probably want the stinger, Prez.”
“You are absolutely right my genius! Here’s what we’ll do, Bella will sit out the rest of rehearsal-“
“Oh, sorry, I know we just met and I kind of- pulled out a stinger- from your hand- before saying hello- Jean Leslie! Pleased to meet you, I wish the circumstances hadn’t-“
“As I Was Saying- Bella will sit here with Miss Leslie-“
“Yes. And my girls and myself will keep an eye on her. Check in.”
“Yes, Charles, you are one of my girls.”
