Andrea shrugged nonchalantly at Vesâs observation. âIt helped us feel like we belonged to something special. We all came from different situations but that all had the same result of none of us really being able to make a lot of friends. Take me for example,â she paused and took a sip of her drink. âIâm the youngest of five. By the time I came along my parents were just kind of done with children and I was often left to myself. I had my four brothers but itâs still not the same. I didnât have a lot of friends as a child and that got pretty damn lonely. By the time I reached the Academy, I was a tough independent girl only concerned with getting through school and escaping into space. Then Alenis and I became friends and she and the rest of them showed me that there was more to life than that.â Andrea took a big swig of her drink. âAh fuck, sorry⌠I just unloaded my whole lifeâs story on you.â
Ves nodded, unsure of what to really say to that. Â He easily identified with her, though he had no desire to vocalize their common pasts. Â He did not want to talk about it. Â Her remark about having found it hard to make friends resonated in his mind, instances flashed by of schooling on Vulcan and homeschooling on Earth. Â He understood it all too well. Â âIt is alright,â he replied quietly. Â
Andrea could tell that he understood what he was saying and nodded slowly, a small smile on her face. She was just finishing her drink when her com beeped. Giving Ves an apologetic smile she flipped the device open.
"Jackson here," Andrea said, then listened for a second. "If it's another damn vent, I swear to God--!" She stopped as the other person on the end began talking rapidly. "Okay, okay, I'm coming." Andrea snapped the com closed. "Hey, I gotta go. Maybe we could meet up another time?"
"Yup, thatâs the one," Andrea responded with a nod. "Weâve known each other since the Academy. Part of the same small group of friends and all," she said. "We called ourselves the Island of Misfit Toys."
Ves understood her reference, though he did not find it...
Andrea shrugged nonchalantly at Ves's observation. "It helped us feel like we belonged to something special. "Just a little," Andrea responded with a lop-sided grin. "Yâknow, Iâve got a friend aboard the ship thatâs docked here whoâs Bajoran. Maybe you know her?"
"Seeing as there was only one on board, I am guessing you mean Alenis?" Â He nodded as he spoke. Â "I talked with her several times. Â I did not know her well, though. Â How do you know her?"
"Yup, that's the one," Andrea responded with a nod. "We've known each other since the Academy. Part of the same small group of friends and all," she said. "We called ourselves the Island of Misfit Toys."

"So, part Vulcan, part Bajoran, but you lived on Earth?" Andrea raised an eyebrow. "Thatâs quite a mixture you got there." She took a sip of her drink.
Ves smiled a bit as he looked down with a nod. Â âMy parents met on Earth, and that is where they have stayed. Â I can hardly consider myself Bajoran, aside from physically. Â But, I did spend quite a bit of time on Vulcan, as I am sure is fairly obvious.â
"Just a little," Andrea responded with a lop-sided grin. "Y'know, I've got a friend aboard the ship that's docked here who's Bajoran. Maybe you know her?"

"I should hope so!" Andrea said with a laugh. "But thank you." She paused as the waiter brought them their drinks. "So, where are you from, Ves?"
"I am from Earth," he replied, probably not as interesting an answer as she would have liked to have heard. Â "I did spend part of each year on Vulcan, but my life was primarily on Earth. Â In New Hampshire, in the United States."
"So, part Vulcan, part Bajoran, but you lived on Earth?" Andrea raised an eyebrow. "That's quite a mixture you got there." She took a sip of her drink.
"Really?" Alenis replied, eyebrow raised. "Maybe theyâre not aboard yet. Do you know their name?Â
As Alenis and Greg talked, Andrea turned to Wei. âSo you work in Engineering as well, darlinâ? Whatdayaâ do?â
"Nope," Wei could hear Greg answer, but she had to turn her attention away when Andrea talked to her.
"I am the Chief Engineer," she nodded before taking another swig from her beer. Suddenly her eyes grew wide and Wei almost spat out her drink. "How did you know I am Engineer? Is there an oil stain on my shirt?!"
Andrea laughed and gave Wei a lop-sided grin. âNo, thereâs no stains on your shirt. Greg mentioned it earlier when we were talking.â She thought back to the moment, just realizing how much she already knew about Greg after their first meeting. Good lord, was that boy a talker.

Wei let out a sigh of relief. It would take more than a few hands to count the number of clothes she's ruined because of oil stains. "It does not surprise me though," she let out a warm laugh, starting to feel the alcohol relax her body. "He does that, oh, what is the word? You know, the whole talking thing without stopping."
"I believe chatterbox is the word you're lookin' for," Andrea said with a grin, taking another swing of her drink. "Funny that you're a Chief of Engineering, too. It must be a requirement to be under 5'4" to get the job," she laughed.

"Iâm the Chief of Engineering," Andrea replied as the bartender walked up to them. "Glass of wine for me, thanks," she said to the man. "What do you want, Ves?"
"Iâll have the same," he responded, addressing the waiter with a smile. Â As the waiter walked away, he redirected his gaze again to Andrea. Â "Chief of Engineering, right. Â I should have guessed. Â You seem quite adept at your job."
"I should hope so!" Andrea said with a laugh. "But thank you." She paused as the waiter brought them their drinks. "So, where are you from, Ves?"

Andrea led Ves to a turbolift that took the up to the main deck. As the exited, she spotted the bar she had been looking for. âAh, Zero Hour, thatâs what itâs called,â Andrea said, mostly to herself. âCâmon letâs go,â she shot Ves a grin then headed off towards the bar.
Once inside, the two found seats. âSo, whatâs your job around here?â Andrea asked in an attempt to start a conversation.
Ves took a seat across from her, speaking as he sat. Â âI am the Chief Science Officer. Â Or, I will be.â Â He rested his head in his hand. Â âI have yet to begin my duties. Â What about you?â
"I'm the Chief of Engineering," Andrea replied as the bartender walked up to them. "Glass of wine for me, thanks," she said to the man. "What do you want, Ves?"

"Thereâs a pretty good bar up on the main deck, though I forget what itâs called," Andrea replied, trying to remember the name. "Ah, never mind. Do you want to go check it out?"
"Sure," he said, nodding. Â "I will follow you," he added, as he did not know where she was talking about.

Andrea finished up and snapped the vent closed, then dropped down to the floor. She moved the goggles to the top of her head. âThere, thatâs done,â Andrea shot Ves a lop-sided grin as she packed her things back into her toolbox. âThanks for the help, darlinâ. Say, if youâre not busy, we could go get a drink. I owe ya one after all.â
He stood as she spoke, hands lowering to his sides. Â âThat would be acceptable, though I do not feel as you really owe me anything, you may if you wish. Â Where shall we go?â
"There's a pretty good bar up on the main deck, though I forget what it's called," Andrea replied, trying to remember the name. "Ah, never mind. Do you want to go check it out?"
"Iâm the Junior Medical Officer," Alenis replied after she finished ordering a drink for the bartender."I donât do much, mostly just hang around and work on various projects until someone stumbles in that needs to be patched up."
"I can tell you that itâs the same until you hit CMO," Greg chuckled after taking another swig of his drink. "Iâm the Assistant CMO here and all I seem to do is just run around and do errands. Now that I think about it, I donât think Iâve even seen the CMO hereâŚ"
"Really?" Alenis replied, eyebrow raised. "Maybe theyâre not aboard yet. Do you know their name?Â

Using the platform of Vesâs hands, Andrea vaulted herself up into the vent. She quickly found the problem and was beginning to work when she heard his question.
"Uh, well I did a year or two as assistant COE aboard a starship before I transferred here. Before that I was at the Engineering college and I did odd jobs around campus to help pay my way through," she replied, her answer echoing out from the vent.
"I see," he replied, staying as steady as he could while she worked. Â He decided not to speak again until she was done, so as not to distract her. Â
Andrea finished up and snapped the vent closed, then dropped down to the floor. She moved the goggles to the top of her head. "There, that's done," Andrea shot Ves a lop-sided grin as she packed her things back into her toolbox. "Thanks for the help, darlin'. Say, if you're not busy, we could go get a drink. "Hold your hands like this," Andrea demonstrated, linking her fingers together to form a sort of platform with her hands. "Then sort of squat down like youâre bracing yourself and hold you hands out. Iâll use your hands as a sort of step to reach the vent," she explained.
He did as she asked, wondering if this was really enough, if she might fall. Â He could catch her, though, he supposed. Â He watched her work with practiced precision, enthralled by how easily it was for her. Â âHow long have you been in this line of work?â he questioned, if only to make conversation.
Using the platform of Ves's hands, Andrea vaulted herself up into the vent.
"Itâs from a really old childrenâs movie, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer," Andrea explained. "He and his friends go to the island of misfit toys to find them all homes. The joke was that we were the toys, and the Academy was our home."
"I never really understood why they would always show that at Christmas time," Greg let out a small laugh. "Itâs always on at least once. Kinda cool how there are people who like the super old stuff though. Sounds a lot nicer than our misfit friends."
âGreg,â Wei stressed, hitting him in the side. She really didnât want anymore story telling about them.
"Alright, alright," he sighed before giving her a teasing look. "We could always talk about you instead." This time she punched in the arm, hard. He had to walk a little while rubbing his shoulder to prevent the string of curses ready to fall off his tongue from coming out. Greg almost forgot that she was stronger than she looked. âWhat was that for?â
"Please excuse him," she smiled to the others. "He says things without thinking first because really still is a child."
"What's wrong with these two?" Andrea whispered to Alenis. Alenis responded with a slight shrug and a shake of her head.
"Well, do you guys mind if Wei and I joined you for a drink?" Alenis asked, posing the question to Greg and Andrea.

"Hey, isnât that it?" Andrea said, then whirled on the man. "Why the hell do you have my friends wallet?" she demanded, making the man flinch.
Priya stepped forward and lifted it off the ground. Flipping it open, she deftly glanced at each picture, and then snapped it shut, satisfied.
"Explain yourself," she said. The manâs eyes were wide, and then, before either woman could react, he stood up and took off down the hall.
Andrea took off after the man and began to gain on him. When she got close enough, she took a flying leap, managing to grab the manâs waist and causing him to fall to the ground. Making sure the man stayed put, Andrea maneuvered herself so that she now sat on the small of his back, preventing him from moving. As Priya reached them, she grinned up at her. âGot him.â
Priya grinned, much larger than she usually did. Moving forward, she caught the attention of a passing crewman.
"Would you alert security?" she asked him. He was young, and gave them all a wide eyed look, before nodding and hurrying back the way he came.
"Impressive tackle," Priya continued to Andrea. "How can I repay you for your help?" She tilted her wallet questioningly.
"Itâs no problem, really. Oh, put youâre wallet away!" Andrea exclaimed, waving away the offer. "Just glad I could help. Also, I can make sure this jackass," she cuffed the man that she was still sitting on on the back of the head, "gets off my station!"
"This has been an interesting day, to understate. However, now that I have my wallet back, I really should return to the trading posts since that was my original objective." Priya slid the wallet into her pocket. She checked her watch. "Yes, if I wait much longer, I will lose the opportunity. Thank you so much for your help. I hope to see you around the station again, before we ship off."
"Same," Andrea have her a lopsided grin. "Hey, stay still!" She cuffed the man again. "Well, see you around, darlin'. I'll make sure this jackass gets handed off to security
"Well kinda sorta yeah," Greg let out a sheepish smile. "I mean, itâs not like it was a secret or anythingâŚ"
"But it is embarrassing to talk about," Wei muttered under her breath.
"You get embarrassed over everything," Greg told...
"It's from a really old children's movie, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer," Andrea explained. "He and his friends go to the island of misfit toys to find them all homes. The joke was that we were the toys, and the Academy was our home."
