Finally a chance to use this list that I’ve had stored in my notes app for months!! (I wish I was joking)
Seems like the issue you have with Ema is her grumpiness, which is actually a selling point for a lot of Ema fans, but yknow, each to their own.
Anyway, here are some examples of Ema being a kind, attentive, warm person, with quotes to back them up! These are copypasted from my notes, so there are references to Aa6, but there are no spoilers except for character appearances which you probably already know about. I’ve marked each Aa6 mention with a ⭐️ for clarity, though.
“Oh, pshaw! You’re friends!” — considers Apollo and Trucy her friends after only their first investigation together and insists they call her by her first name.
“ …Hey, you. Why are you so quiet all of a sudden?” And “I know that face.” — SUPER in tune with other people’s emotions and picks up on subtle changes in behaviour and facial expression very quickly.
“I’m proud of you. Keep up the good work.” — “I’m proud of you” is a very personal thing to say, especially to someone you haven’t known for long. The fact that she busts this out to Apollo in only their second investigation together? Adorable stuff.
“I know how you’re feeling. It is hard to know when to stop.” — Empathises! Granted, it’s often about shallow things like investigation, but STILL. See also point 11
“...It's alright. Top priority now is finding that body. ...You can make it up to me later.” — Is often initially mad but surprisingly quick to forgive, even in serious situations like Apollo screwing up the entire investigation. Only expects mild compensation in the form of Snackoos, which is probably a joke anyway.
“Hey! Wipe that frown off your face. One stick in the mud per crime scene, please.” And “Aww, don’t look so glum. You have to keep a positive outlook!” — Doesn’t like seeing other people miserable and tries to cheer them up. In her own way.
⭐️“Look, I was personally against that, OK?” And “All right, take her down to the station! But with respect - - got it?!” — Has personal opinions on the arrests she makes and tries to make things as comfortable as possible for the person being arrested
⭐️“Well, would you look at that. Nice going, Trucy.” And “Hey, you’re pretty good, Maya!” (+ many more examples) — very complimentary when someone notices something in an investigation, even if it’s something minor she could have easily done herself. She doesn’t just punish bad behaviour, she rewards good behaviour! Someone’s been reading up on good parenting.
⭐️ “You’re darn right it’s something you said! What’s with you brushing me off like that? We’ve got heaps to catch up on!” — big ol’ softy. She’s genuinely upset when Apollo tries to avoid her after bumping into her again for the first time in 2 years. She wants a little chat!!
⭐️“…but you’re still just a newbie to me.” — I know this is technically belittling, but there’s something about it that feels affectionate and familiar. It’s cute.
⭐️“............I'm so sorry. It seems you've had quite a life.”— [Had to remove the context for this one due to SoJ spoilers but she’s talking to Apollo here]
⭐️“Why don’t you take a break with something sweet? I highly recommend Snackoos, myself. You want to try some?” And (Literally any time she gets people to help her with a forensics thing) — Her love language is sharing the things she enjoys with others! She’s more than capable of doing all the forensics stuff herself, but she sees it as FUN and she wants to give the people she likes a go! She likes to explain how to do things, too. Would’ve done great as a edutainment presenter.
Sorry if that’s a lot to read, it wasn’t really intended for wider audiences. But yeah, the way I (and probably? Hopefully! Other Ema fans) personally interpret Ema is as a sort of grouchy older sister-type that talks shit sometimes but still always has your back. That’s her appeal to me!
