Artists who talk about writing as though they're simply acting as a conduit for 'the story' drive me kind of crazy. I used to think it was a matter of opinion because so many great authors talk about their craft in those terms (leguin comes to mind) meanwhile I think of stories more like math problems* and don't write much of anything, but I'm becoming more antagonistic to the whole concept. I think it leads to a lack of self-reflection and definitely isn't 'magical.' You're not receiving the story as a living object from some mysterious external source and translating/molding/otherwise verbing it, the whole process starts and ends with you! Raugh!

Btw, I think this goes without saying, but I love girls who transition from confident, annoying, self-righteous, arrogant, pricks into even more confident, annoying, self-righteous, arrogant, cunts.
