MAHOΩ

From the MahoΩ facebook page: "In January 2011, MAHOΩ was formed and the members were recruited by Suganami Yu and Haruka of ONGAKUZENYASYA. Their first stage appearance was at "TOUMEI MAGAZINE Japan tour" in August 2011. MAHOΩ is freely expressing girl’s mind with the splendid harmony of three keyboards, fat-ass rhythm section and kitsch dancing of two singers."

I stumbled upon MahoΩ because of they share members with bands like Wienners, Goro Golo, Commitments, and フジロッ久（仮）which are all associated with the punk scene I would say. However, MahoΩ isn't really a punk band. They play catchy and cute pop music and their live shows look like a lot of fun:

Take Out Bright

This is the 2nd demo CD-R from Take Out Bright. This band remind me a lot of early First of All or Anti-Nice, so they have a cool 90s Japanese punk sound. Ten short, fast, and catchy songs on this disc. Have a listen below!

Twinkle Jack

Ok, here's one I can't see many people knowing about, and to be honest I barely know anything about this group either. Unfortunately their old website is gone. Twinkle Jack was four girls: Miwa, Wantarou, Satsuki, and Akiko. Akiko wrote all the songs. Miwa was also in Copter4016882 and Akiko (aka Akubi) was also in Marine Craft. I'm pretty sure I got the disc from Akiko, but it was such a long time ago. Maybe you can still email the band here for more info if you're curious, and maybe they still have some discs left. Anyway, four tracks of the most adorable indie pop ever.

Eunaly

I can't say enough good things about Eunaly. I first heard this band through their split with Bonjour, which I believe is a side band of Super from Short Story. Anyway, from what I can tell, Eunaly consists of one guy and one girl who trade off singing, but I really don't know anything else. It mostly acoustic guitar + singing with the occasional harmonica, kazoo, or whistling. Anyway, if you like acoustic-y stuff like Bonjour, TV not January, Lost Child, or Shibata Satoko you'll probably dig this. Check it!

Twinkle Twinkles

I picked this one up from JETSET along with some other goodies, came in the mail earlier this week. I really don't know much about this band at all, but they are Japanese indiepop but on the just slightly harder side and kind of remind me of bands like Fat Tulips, Free Loan Investments, Zipper, etc. Fuzzy, catchy, and simple. I can't understand a single word on this one but that's ok, it's still pretty dang good! 7 songs in total, around 21 minutes. Have a listen below and here.

The Hum Hums

This band is crazy good! Japanese pop-punk which reminds me a lot of The Queers and KOGA Records bands. "Here Comes Summer" is their 2nd demo CD-R. Six songs, a couple of which you can listen here and I'll post another below. Email the band! I think they'll sell you a copy :D

The Satisfaction

Got this CD-R ep (and a nifty The Satisfaction t-shirt) in the mail yesterday, thanks Akira!! Apparently I was the first order from outside Japan, kinda neat. 11 tracks of the best melodic Japanese punk: simple and catchy. Lyrics are in Japanese which is a refreshing change from the usual. Check out track 2 (koi ga shitai) below:

Trixie's Big Red Motorbike

Trixie's Big Red Motorbike was/is an indiepop band from the UK in the early to mid 1980s, but I only discovered their music recently. Although their original releases are long out of print, a retrospective compilation disc has been released on Lobby Lud Records and is available for streaming and to order here. My favorite songs are right in the middle of the disc, tracks 8-14.

The disc comes in a nice handmade sleeve with a booklet full of lots of old photos of the band. Highly recommended!

柴田聡子 (Shibata Satoko)

Last week I received the "summer" and "winter" demos of Shibata Satoko, one of my new favorite musicians from Japan. I discovered her videos from Youtube while watching the clips of MAHOΩ, which features members of Wienners, Goro Golo, Commitments, フジロッ久（仮）. I immediately got that "I've got to hear more!" feeling when hearing her songs. You can watch several of her videos here:
