Archive Crew

Mumbo - The Head Archivist of the Hermit Institute. Worked as an archival assistant for the previous archivist, but never learned about the Fears. He is marked by the Eye, both because of his work in the Archives, and because of a prior affinity. Have you ever felt like everyone was in on a secret except you? Well Mumbo feels like that all the time, and it instilled in him a need to Know what the people around him are thinking about a situation, and how they expect him to act. His Eye abilities have begun manifesting as a voice in the back of his mind, whispering the surface thoughts of his assistants.

Pearl - An Archival Assistant that also worked under the previous archivist. She was originally pursuing a career in conservation ecology before the suspicious disappearance of her twin brother. After receiving her Bachelor's, she approached the Hermit Institute in hopes of joining their research department, but found her calling in the archives instead. Touched by both the Vast and the Hunt, one of the few Institute members fully aware of the Fears, she is torn between the call of the Endless and the song of the Everchase. She knows that she'll never find her brother as a human, but she refuses to give up her connection to either Fear.

Impulse - The only Avatar in the archives, Impulse used to be a software engineer before his Becoming. With his interests in both technology and history, as well as his deep dives into the evolution of artificial intelligence, Impulse knew more than most about the way humanity was slowly destroying the natural with the artificial. He was not surprised, when he learned of the Fears, to learn of his alignment. Unfortunately, an Extinction Avatar working with software won't last very long, especially when he began short circuiting any device he came too close to.

Skizz - Somehow, despite being a long time friend and roommate of an Extinction Avatar, and having multiple encounters with artefacts of several Fears, Skizz does not have any identifiable Marks. Unbeknownst to him and Impulse, neither of whom are part of any supernatural communities, Skizz is what is referred to as an Anchor - a person unaffected by artefacts and Aspects, with a high resistance to the Fears and their Avatars. They are a way for Avatars and Aspects to keep in touch with humans, as Anchors are able to interact with all supernatural and non supernatural groups with no real risk of harm.

Partners of Institute Employees

Bdubs - Avatar of the Buried, owner of a one man garden centre. Long term boyfriend of Etho. Etho can't make skin to skin contact? His boyfriend is covered in a layer of moss. Boom, loophole.

Tango - CEO of Tek Industries, Marked by both the Desolation and the Buried. Jimmy's mysterious boyfriend.

Scott - Avatar of the Web that works odd jobs when the fancy strikes him. Somehow also Jimmy's mysterious boyfriend?

Administration Department

Xisuma - Xisuma was attacked by a Not-Them early into his career in the Institute. He managed to partially fight it off, but ended up fusing with it. Every memory and record of the original Xisuma disappeared, but no replacements were supernaturally created, so Xisuma had to deal with 0 identity, 0 friends or family, and an uncontrollable shape shifting problem. He disappeared to fix his situation, and reappeared years later as the new Head of the Hermit Institute. He has (mostly) fixed the spontaneous shape shifting, and qualifies as an Avatar of the Stranger.

Keralis - Keralis is a close friend of Xisuma that he made during his "rebuilding his life" period. When Xisuma became Institute Head, Keralis became his assistant, fulfilling multiple job descriptions in the Administration Department so that no one new would be exposed to Xisuma's "supernatural-ness". Keralis is a normal human man with official Entity alignment.

Research Department

Etho - Etho joined the Research department when Xisuma was still its head. When Xisuma disappeared, there was suddenly four years where there was no head of the research department in their memories, and Etho was chosen to look into it. During his investigation, he encountered a Lonely artefact that made it impossible for him to make skin to skin contact with other people. He rose to the department head position after Xisuma became Insitution Head, and like Xisuma, makes due with his supernatural affliction.

Gem - Gem is the daughter of a police officer from a rural town. Her father responded to a call made by a victim of the Corruption, and accidentally brought it back to his and Gem's home afterwards. Their lives were saved by an Avatar of the Hunt, who agreed to take Gem under their wing. She went through the police academy, went on Hunts with her mentor, and after her Becoming, joined the research department of the Hermit Institute to find more monsters in need of Hunting.

Hypno & Beef - Two members of the research department with academic research degrees. Beef works closely with the Archival crew. Both are completely human.

Artefact Storage

Joe Hills - Joe Hills. Head of Artefact Storage. Friend of Cleo. Remembers when the Institute was founded. Might be an Aspect of the Spiral, might just be a collector.

Scar - Scar had an encounter with the Slaughter while still in high school that he doesn't like talking about. Throughout University, he searched for a way to escape the consequences of this encounter, and finally, he devoted himself to the Spiral shortly before joining the Institute. It is, however, entirely possible that he lied about this backstory. The Spiral folk like to lie, after all.

Library

Wels - Wels is the library manager. Like most of the library staff, he prefers to work behind the scenes. He deals with the rare, original copies of manuscripts that aren't available to the public. He is a normal human, not supernaturally aligned.

Bdubs - A Fire/Erudition AoE DPS.

BigB - A Physical/Nihility DoT sub DPS. Afflicts random DoT effects.

Cleo - A Lightning/Nihility debuff support. Reduces enemy atk and effect hit rate.

Etho - An Ice/Erudition skill point consuming DPS.

Gem - A Lightning/Hunt FuA DPS.

Grian - A Quantum/Remembrance support. Grants true damage, Memosprite grants "watched" ally RES PEN and energy regen rate.

Impulse - An Imaginary/Preservation sustain.

Jimmy - An Imaginary/Nihility DoT DPS. Detonates DoT effects and applies Omen, reducing enemy Effect RES.

Joel - A Physical/Remembrance DPS. Memosprite "Hound", scales off SPD.

Lizzie - A Quantum/Abundance sustain. Applies Drain, allowing allies to heal based on damage dealt to enemies.

Martyn - A Wind/Hunt Sub-DPS. Designates one character as "Lord", boosts ATK, grants self FuA.

Mumbo - A Quantum/Remembrance shield sustain. Memosprite "Grumbot" tallies shield hits and launches FuAs.

Pearl - An Imaginary/Destruction DPS. High energy cost ult that gives blood moon state.

Ren - A Physical/Destruction health consuming DPS.

Scar - A Wind/Elation DPS. Deals AoE damage.

Scott - An Ice/Elation sustain. Heals and buffs effect RES.

Skizz - A Lightning/Harmony support. Offers action advance and skill point regen.

Bdubs - Sloomber Slime. He eepy.

BigB - Pink Slime. Mr Reliable. Everyone loves him. Pairs with everyone.

Cleo - Saber Slime. Part vibes, part zombie gets the extinct cat slime.

Etho - Dervish Slime. Vibes.

Gem - Angler Slime. Again, vibes. (Side note, the Angler Slime is just the cutest thing when it eats. Om nom nom.)

Grian - Quantum Slime. They glitch out of reality if not given enough attention.

Impulse - Yolky Slime. Joyous yellow guys.

Jimmy - Boom Slime. They randomly explode, kinda like Jimmy.

Joel - Butterfly Slime. Pure vibes.

Lizzie - Crystal Slime. Pretty colors.

Martyn - Tangle Slime. They have a habit of yoinking plorts, turning into Tarr, and killing all my Tangles.

Mumbo - Batty Slime. Vampire Mumbo.

Pearl - Phosphor Slime. They both have that nighttime glowy vibe.

Ren - Hunter Slime. Woof.

Scar - Ringtail Slime. Look up the Ringtail slime. Look at that face. Look at it.

Scott - Mosaic Slime. I mean come on.

Skizz - Rad Slime. This slime makes a dated joke. Skizz incarnate.

Bdubs - An Earthblood Elf who uses his Earth Arcanum to grow trees and plants into pavillions and artistic displays.

BigB - A member of a secretive Earthblood Elf tribe within the Uncharted Forest. Fond of creating hedge mazes.

Cleo - A Seamstress from Duren who learned the Earth Arcanum to revive dead crops in their village.

Etho - A Moonshadow Elf inventor. Combines human and elven technology to create never-before-seen gadgets.

Gem - A Tideblood Elf, Tidebound mother with an Earthblood father. Born with the Ocean Arcanum but living on land, she is studying both Ocean and Earth magic.

Grian - A Skyshadow Elf with the Sky Arcanum, who works as a scout for the Moonshadow Elves with his twin sister.

Impulse - A Sunfire Elf engineer who uses the Sun Arcanum to build and rebuild defensive encampments from molten rock near the Breach.

Jimmy - A Tidewing Elf who lives on the Xadian coast of the Spinning Sea. He was born with wings but an Ocean Arcanum.

Joel - A soldier from Katolis stationed in the mountains near the Gulf of Tenebris.

Lizzie - A Tidebound Elf, daughter of two scholars at the Ocean Nexus. She works as a Healer for marine animals.

Martyn - An Eveneren Crownguard trying to study the mysterious Star Arcanum.

Mumbo - An architect living in the capitol of Katolis, interested in the theory of magic rather than a specific Arcanum.

Pearl - A Skyshadow Elf with the Moon Arcanum. She works as a scout alongside her twin brother.

Ren - A Moonshadow/human hybrid who lives in Del Bar. The only evidence of his elven mother is the Moonshadow form he takes on full moons.

Scar - A Moonshadow Elf capable of casting extremely powerful illusions. "Trickster" is the politest way to describe his work.

Scott - An Earthblood Elf with Startouched ancestry. Capable of casting both Earth and Star spells, he currently lives in Lux Aurea for their library, in hopes of becoming the first Starblood Archmage.

Skizz - A Sunfire Elf battlefield healer.
