Lost in the Delta quadrant

I need an honest opinion. Or more precisely some perspective on a decision I made that still haunts me. I was a Lieutenant. During a mission that went completely off the rails, I went through some extreme changes. Mentally and physically, I wasn’t myself. In that state, I did things I now regret. Things I would never normally do, including what can be considered kidnapping. The result is that three small offspring came into existence because of it. The Doctor insists they weren’t really human, but they were mine. I didn’t fight to keep them. They were left behind because Chakotay someone ended up making a decision while I was incapacitated. Possibly because they couldn’t survive on the ship, their development was unpredictable, and keeping them around would have caused more problems. Also… they’d be thirty by now. Thirty! And I didn’t even get a birthday card. Do they love science and poetry like their mother? or like cars and pizza like me? Am I grandfather? Even after such a long time, I keep asking myself if letting them stay where they had a chance was really the right choice? Or I was right to walk away … because I’m pretty sure parenting things that aren’t human is a full-time job I would have failed miserably at?

TL;DR: Warp experiment goes wrong, small creatures appear, I let them go, and I feel like the worst parent ever.
