More canon-compliant-ish Saps at the Covenant! This time itās his first meal there :) the way he refers to himself is pretty intentional here
Yggdrasilian food is fucking bomb. Or maybe itās just the Covenantās food, or maybe Saparata is just really, really hungry.Ā
Heās halfway through the bowl of beef and potatoes and root vegetables and noodles before he remembers to breathe. The spices roil on his tongue like the lava of Infernusās volcano, though without the part where it melts his face off. The beef has been simmered to perfection, whatever toughness carried from its origins softened by time and heat.Ā
The mess hall is taken up by long, rough-hewn tables, each dotted with the gray coats and caps of Covenant members eating their own meals. The front of the hall is home to the table where the Covenantās Council sits, each member placed in front of the column of tables home to their subunit. The table itself is long enough for the eight council members and the extra chair brought out for Saparata.Ā
Aether above. Turntapp couldnāt have made him more conspicuous than if he lit a redstone lamp right over Saparataās head. Murmurs rumble through the hall, sounding like any other mess hall of fighters, but paired with the glances people think theyāre stealing at Saparata, he knows what the hot topic of conversation must be.Ā
Whatever. They can stare. He has a half bowl of real food and half a piece of dark-colored bread to get through. He hasnāt tasted a fresh loaf of bread in so long. Even if heās never had bread this dark or bitter, it beats stale Pandoran bread. He likes that it has such a strong flavor.
If he were here as a neutral party, he wouldāve liked to ask about the bread. What kind of grain is used in the flour? Is it the grain that gives it that taste? Pandoran wheat only grows at mildly warm temperatures, and parts of Yggdrasil are definitely too cold (or hot) for that. Is the grain grown here adapted to harsher climates?
Would they have welcomed him? Once the borders fell, would he have crossed the waters ā still alone, but not lonely ā and have been greeted by Turntapp at a proper docking location? Would Turntapp have watched his face instead of his hands, his weapon? Would he have stayed for a few days, learned about their culture, and been able to go home at the end of it all? Would he have stopped at Luminara along the way?
He sees Flux in the glow of the hallās lanterns, face softened by orange. In this strange world, heās still Luminaraās vice president, and Saps only worries about his workload and sleep schedule. Saps would put a hand on his shoulder and heād grumble about it, but he would go to bed.
