So I was watching Shinchan (as one does when procrastinating), and suddenly I noticed something:

carp streamers — koinobori — are always shown for boys.

Cue confusion. Cue Google. Cue me falling into a cultural rabbit hole.

Here’s the cute + interesting explanation I found:

🎏 1. Carp streamers aren’t “anti-girl.” They’re just historically boy-coded.

In Japan (and earlier in China), the 'carp' is a symbol of strength — like “I will swim upstream even if the river is trying to murder me.”

Basically the ✨grindset fish✨.

Because of that whole brave-strong-warrior vibe, carp became associated with 'boys', especially in old samurai culture.

🎎 2. May 5th used to be Boys’ Day. (Girls already had their own day!)

Originally:

March 3 → Girl’s Day (Hina Matsuri)

*May 5 → Boy’s Day (Tango no Sekku)

So carp streamers were flown for boys the way hina dolls were displayed for girls.

Girls got elegance and peach blossoms; boys got “be like this fish.”

⚔️ 3. Samurai families turned the carp into a mini warrior symbol

Samurai hoped their sons would grow up:

strong

brave

persistent

able to face challenges (and possibly enemies…)

So they started flying a big black carp for the father + a colorful carp for each son.

A literal “family of fish in the wind.”

🌈 4. BUT modern Japan doesn’t gatekeep carp streamers anymore

After WWII, May 5 became Children’s Day, for all kids.

Now lots of families fly them for:

daughters

sons

or just because they’re pretty and vibe with spring

So no, carp streamers are not “not for women.”

They’re just historically tied to boys — and culture keeps evolving.

✨ In conclusion

Shinchan accidentally taught me that gender symbolism in Japan goes deeper than it looks,

and also that carp have better work ethic than all of us.
