다듬이질을 하는 조선 여인을 찍은 1900년대의 사진이다. 다듬이질은 옷을 부드럽고 매끈하게 만들고 고쳐만드는 전통적인 조선 방식이다.

현대에는 기술 발전으로 필요성이 떨어졌지만 다듬이질은 삼희성(三喜聲) 중 한 가지의 소리로 아직도 그 아름다움을 간직하고 있다. 조선시대에 이 소리들이 없는 집안이 망가진다 믿었다. 이 세가지의 소리들은 조선 문화에 토대가 되는 돌들이었다. 이 소리들은 다음과 같다: 1. 아이들의 울음소리, 2. 남자들이 책을 읽는 소리, 3. 여인들이 다듬이질을 하는 소리.

다듬이질의 관습과 우리 민족에 미친 영향은 500년의 조선 역사 동안 여성들에 의해 형성이 되었다. 조선 여성들이 그리 큰 역할을 했던 이유는 당시 한 가정의 옷에 대한 관리의 대부분은 여성들이 맡았기 때문이다.

다듬이질은 첫 째, 다듬잇방망이(물건을 내리치는 나무 방망이)와 다듬잇돌(보통 돌, 화강암으로 만들어진 표면 도구) 또는 다듬잇대(보통 자작나무로 만든 표면 도구)를 사용하면서 시작이 된다. 옷을 씻은 후 풀을 먹인다. 다음, 옷을 최소한으로 말린 후 다시 물을 뿌린다. 그 후 옷을 접고 천에 싸서 조심하게 놓는다. 마지막으로 옷을 다듬잇돌이나 다듬잇대위애 놓은 후 접고 피면서 다듬잇방망이로 두드린다. 고급 옷감을 사용할 때에는 옷을 홍두깨에 두르고 다듬이질 방식을 사용한다.

19세기 초반에 전주 이씨(全州李氏)의 빙허각 이씨(빙허각 李氏)가 저술한 ‘규합총서(閨閤叢書)’에는 다듬이질을 사용하는 방법에 대해 귀한 정보들이 있다.

Shown here is a 1900s (circa 1900~1910) photograph of a Joseon woman using the method of 다듬이질(Dadeumijil - 도침(擣砧)). It is a traditional Korean way to smoothen, soften, and remake washed clothing.

Although not practiced today due to the advancement of technology, Dadeumijil still retains beauty in its status as one of the three sounds of ‘삼희성(Samheeseong, 三喜聲)’. During the Joseon Dynasty, these sounds were considered indispensable to the functioning of a household. The importance of these sounds resonated deeply into the heart of Joseon culture. The three sounds are as follows: 1. Sound of a baby crying, 2. Sound of men reading, 3. Sound of women performing Dadeumijil.

The practice of Dadeumijil and its impact on our people’s household clothing culture was forged by women over the course of 500 years of Joseon history. Joseon women played such a dominating role because most of the management of clothing in a family’s household, including washing and making clothing, was largely done by women.

Dadeumijil consists of using 다듬잇방망이(Dadeumitbangmangi - a wooden bat used to beat objects) and 다듬잇돌(Dadeumitdol - Surface tool typically made out of stone or granite) or 다듬잇대(Dadeumitdae - Surface tool made out of birch wood). The clothes are first washed, after which starch is added. Then, the clothes are dried minimally and water is sprayed onto the clothing. They are then folded, wrapped in cloth, and placed carefully. Lastly, they are placed on a Dadeumitdol or Dadeumitdae and beat rhythmically with the Dadeumibangmangi whilst being folded and unfolded. With higher quality fabric, the Dadeumijil method of wrapping the clothing around a 홍두깨(Hongdukkae) is used.
